How To Bike To Work Like A Pro Commuter

01:52
Biking to work is a great way save money on gas and parking, send less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and improve your personal health. But it takes some preparation, even after you take your bike to the shop to get it tuned up for the season. So, think about what you're going to bring with you before you ride. Also, check the weather — just in case. If it's going to rain, fenders and rain gear are a must. And if it's going to be dark at any point in your commute, you'll need lights on the front and rear of your bike; a helmet light might be a good idea, too. Here are a few other things you may want to bring: Your helmet, sunglasses, a tire pump with a gauge, a change of shoes, your wallet, something to eat (at work, of course), a change of clothes and anything else you think is important. And if you're wearing longer pants and you don't want to rip them, go ahead and roll up the pant leg so it doesn't catch. Try to avoid roads that aren't bike friendly, and if you can avoid roads altogether and use a trail instead, that's awesome. But more than likely, you're going to have to share the road with cars at some point in your commute. So, it's important to follow the rules of the road: Wear a helmet; stop at stop signs and red stop lights; signal when you're making turns; stay to the right of the road; avoid using sidewalks (especially in business districts); and on bike paths or sidewalks, alert pedestrians before passing them — it can be terrifying when a bike passes you unannounced. Lastly, remember to use hand signals so cars know what you're planning to do. Here are the basics: For a left hand turn, hold out your left arm. For a right hand turn, hold out your right arm. If you're stopping or slowing down, hold your left arm out to your side with your hand near your waist. It's a lot to keep track of at first, but don't worry. It gets easier with practice, just like riding a bike. This video includes images from Vicons Design / CC BY 3.0. If The Mosul Dam Bursts, It Could Kill More People Than The Iraq War

01:32
Iraq's Mosul Dam is one of the most dangerous in the world. At capacity, it holds back about 11 billion cubic meters of water. If the dam bursts, in a matter of hours it could kill more people than the entire Iraq War. The U.S. estimates anywhere between 500,000 to 1.47 million lives would be at risk. Many of them are in Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city. The city's been under ISIS control since 2014. The dam, about 26 miles northwest of Mosul, currently isn't. In the worst case scenario, more than half (54 percent) of the city will be flooded. Best case? About a third (34 percent) of the city would flood. That flooding would reach as far south as Baghdad. Here's the big problem. The Mosul Dam is on top of a layer of gypsum and anhydrite. Turns out, these minerals don't hold up too well against water, so the dam could fail if it's not maintained. Engineers have used a technique called grouting to fill the cavities underneath the dam pretty much nonstop since it started operating in 1986. But when ISIS took control of the dam in August 2014, the grouting stopped. Grouting resumed after Kurdish forces chased away the ISIS fighters. But even now, the dam isn't maintained at the same level it was before. There is some good news. After months of negotiations, the Iraqi government has hired an Italian firm to repair the dam over the coming months. But that's only if the dam stays out of ISIS' hands. What Agent Orange Does To The Body

01:51
More than 2,000 U.S. airmen will be compensated for exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. What has the herbicide done to their bodies? Follow Cliff Judy: http://www.twitter.com/cliffjudy See more at http://www.newsy.com Transcript: More than 2,000 U.S. airmen who suffered from Agent Orange exposure will receive a total of about $47.5 million in benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. A January report on the herbicide is getting much of the credit for the decision announced Thursday. Vets have to prove they worked on a C-123 aircraft contaminated with the substance during the Vietnam War and that they're showing symptoms. In Vietnam, America dropped more than 19 million gallons of herbicides, with Agent Orange being the favorite. The hope was that the chemicals would strip Vietnam of its dense trees and give U.S. soldiers the upper hand. The reason Agent Orange is so dangerous is because of the chemical dioxin. Once in the body, it can hit just about everything — including the nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems. "Dioxin remains toxic for decades," a spokeswoman for Make Agent Orange History said. It's also not water-soluble, meaning it doesn't degrade easily, and genetic effects can be passed down through generations after one person's exposed. For some vets, the first symptoms began with blurred vision, memory loss and lack of concentration. From there, the symptoms can get a lot worse. Agent Orange has been linked to prostate cancer, lung cancers, Parkinson's disease and birth defects. After coming back from the war, soldiers and their children born after the war began to show symptoms. (Video via Java Films / "The Children of Agent Orange") Vets began protesting as effects showed, but the VA said there was a lack of evidence to support their claims. (Video via The New York Times) "We don't mean to say there isn't an Agent Orange effect, but at this point in time we don't seem to see anything that confirms that there is something there specifically," Dr. Alvin Young from the VA Agent Orange Task Force said in media clips compiled by The New York Times. The VA eventually backtracked, and in 1991, the Agent Orange Act was passed — allowing vets to receive benefits. On Thursday, the secretary of the VA said in a statement, "Opening up eligibility for this deserving group of Air Force veterans and reservists is the right thing to do." Fighting Wildfire With Fire — With Drones

01:18
The U.S. Forest Service is exploring a new tool that could help wildland firefighters do their jobs: a drone that drops tiny firebombs. Scientists at the University of Nebraska developed the drones to start controlled burns. The remote drones carry a hopper of what are essentially incendiary paintballs. "Each ball is rotated and injected with alcohol to start a chemical reaction before being dropped to the ground. Seconds later, the ball ignites," said a narrator from the University of Nebraska. The mechanical precision could be useful for firefighters setting prescribed burns in the wild. These intentional fires consume fuel that might otherwise feed uncontrolled fires. They also help fight invasive plant species and return useful nutrients to the soil. Right now, they're set by hand or from helicopters. The U.S. Geological Survey thinks using drones to do it could be safer — air accidents have accounted for about a quarter of firefighter deaths in the U.S. since 2000. But there's still a lot of red tape in the way before drones can start distributing fire themselves. The U.S. Forest Service still treats them as full-size aircraft, with all the same training and maintenance requirements. And the FAA has strict rules against drones carrying "hazardous materials." Fireballs would probably qualify. Newsy is your source for concise, unbiased video news and analysis covering the top stories from around the world. Elijah Wood Says Hollywood Has A Child Sex Abuse Problem

01:20
Former child star Elijah Wood says Hollywood has a seedy "underbelly" of child sex abuse and that those responsible are being protected by the entertainment industry elite. Wood, who's been acting since he was 8, told The Sunday Times, "There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind." Wood compared the unnamed abusers to the British DJ Jimmy Savile, who faced dozens of accusations of rape and assault spanning more than four decades. Those claims were largely swept under the rug until after Savile's death. It's important to note that Wood's claims are unsubstantiated, but other child stars from the same era have made similar accusations in the past. In 2011, Corey Feldman said he and other child stars in the '80s were abused by people with a lot of power in the entertainment industry.  "I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia. ... There was a circle of older men that surrounded themselves around this group of kids," Feldman said in an interview. Declining to give specifics, Feldman said a Hollywood executive is directly responsible for the drug and alcohol problems that contributed to the death of his friend and fellow child star Corey Haim. Wood said he was lucky to have a mom who protected him from abuse but added, "I've been led down dark paths to realize that these things probably are still happening."
