POLITICAL THEORY - Karl Marx

09:28
Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? 3 Reasons To Criticize Religion

04:44
3 reasons to criticize religion, from an atheist perspective. Main Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT-QFGBTiBess5bJPT57CBg Tumblr: http://rthompson1624.tumblr.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theatheistguy Twitter: https://twitter.com/that_atheistguy I’ve been asked countless times “why do you criticize religion? Why don’t you just keep your opinions to yourself”? Well, there’s a few answers to that. Nothing should be immune to criticism. One of the biggest reasons that I criticize religion is the expectation that it shouldn’t be criticized. I find it absurd and unsettling that people would expect a set of ideas that have a significant impact on billions of lives to go unchecked. Good ideas don’t need to be free from scrutiny, they’re good ideas precisely because they can be and have been critically examined. To me, when a person claims that something should be above criticism, that implies two things. First, it’s probable that idea is not what the person claims it to be and second, the person making that claim very likely knows it. I’m all for the marketplace of ideas. Ideas should be freely shared and freely criticized between all groups of people. It is a central and fundamental component to any meaningful progress. It is also, quite simply, unavoidable that while expressing ideas, we will, at times offend other people, and that’s okay. Criticism fosters understanding and is a show of respect since you’re critically examining and considering another person’s viewpoint. Restraining an argument because you’re worried about offending someone is patronizing and very likely more offensive than the original argument itself, by restraining your criticism of another person’s idea you’re essentially saying that they aren’t grown up enough to understand that people sometimes disagree. People deserve respect, ideas do not. Religion infects politics I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I believe very strongly in protecting the rights of the minority from the whims of the majority. The majority of Americans fit under the broad umbrella of “Christianity” and many of them allow their religion to make moral pronouncements over them that they then try to legislate on to the minority of people that disagree. I think that criticism of the foundation of these moral pronouncements and beliefs is of paramount importance. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of Christians have not even read the Bible and yet they support laws that will impact other people’s lives, based on this book that they’ve never read. It is, therefore, very important to expose as much of the nonsensical babble, immoral teachings and just overall sickening contents of the Bible as well as problematic concepts of religion as a whole. t’s also important to remember that if a particular piece of legislation is religiously motivated and you support it, you’re helping to set a precedent for, and validating any religiously motivated legislation in the future, including those that are in direct opposition to your own religion. Religion makes absolute claims Religious texts and leaders very frequently make absolute claims that stifle knowledge and retard scientific progress. One of the most prevalent examples in the US is young Earth creationists ignoring evidence that is incongruent with their belief in one of the several creation stories of the Bible. Because people are tribal by nature, we tend to go with whatever our specific group is saying at the time, perhaps this is why, in the 21st century, over 40% of Americans still believe that God created modern humans only 10 thousand years ago. Religion also makes absolute moral claims or pronouncements that many people fervently follow. Many of these moral pronouncements have no modern function in civilized societies and all of the ones that do existed long before any religions laid claim to them such as murder, rape and theft being wrong. Too often, religion is used to justify immoral behavior and ideas in ways that no other concept could. This is perhaps the biggest reason to criticize religion. All ideas should be met with skepticism and criticism, especially those that make absolute claims, disbelief in these kind of claims should always be the default position until that claim has held up to real scrutiny.

8 Thomas Reid on the Principles of Morals

53:35
Dan Robinson gives the last and final lecture on Reid's critique of David Hume at Oxford. "Like all other sciences, morals must have first principles, and all moral reasoning is based on them... In all rational belief, the thing believed is either a first principle or something inferred by valid reasoning from first principles". As for utility, "Suppose that mice rescue the distressed person by chewing through the cords that bound him. Is there moral goodness in this act of the mice?" Beyond the armchair and other precincts of untrammeled speculation, one finds that, there is little purchase on a morality of pleasure and utility. Indeed, "If what we call 'moral judgment' isn't really a judgment but merely a feeling, it follows that the moral principles that we have been taught to consider as an immutable law to all intelligent beings have no basis except an arbitrary structure and fabric in the constitution of the human mind...Thus, by a change in our structure immoral things could become moral...There are beings who can't perceive mathematical truths; but no defect, no error of understanding, can make what is true to be false". Under "David Hume", the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins with, "The most important philosopher ever to write in English". His most formidable contemporary critic was the fellow Scot, Thomas Reid, the major architect of so-called Scottish Common Sense Philosophy. The most significant features of Hume's work, as understood by Reid, are the representive theory of perception, the nature of causation and causal concepts, the nature of personal identity and the foundations of morality. Each of these topics is presented in a pair of lectures, the first summarizing Hume's position and the second Reid's critique of that position. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBHxLhKiPKxBuGhbDKwahBLVhiUVTf9Ts

Hobbes' Social Contract Theory

15:12
A basic introduction, criticisms, and discussion questions. Notice Hobbes presents a framework for understanding the "origins" of morality... that is the focus of this video. Hobbes' basic approach is one of many alternatives to saying moral rules are simply based on cultural or individual approval, or God's will, etc. In short, moral rules are created to escape the state of nature and they either work well for that purpose or they don't. I do not address his entire political theory in this video.

Plato and Aristotle (Introduction to Greek Philosophy)

07:52
http://www.tomrichey.net Tom Richey provides students with an introduction to Greek philosophy, contrasting Plato's idealism with Aristotle's realism and comparing the basic premise of Plato's Republic with Aristotle's Politics. In Raphael's painting, The School of Athens, Plato and Aristotle walk side by side at the center, with Plato pointing up to signify his idealism and Aristotle pointing down to signify his belief in philosophical realism. This is a starting point for understanding the key differences between Plato and Aristotle.

Gaia Hypothesis - James Lovelock

28:47
James Ephraim Lovelock, is an independent scientist, environmentalist and futurist who lives in Dorset, England. He is best known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, which he discusses in this exclusive interview, filmed in 2007. The Gaia hypothesis, also known as Gaia theory or Gaia principle, proposes that organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a self-regulating, complex system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the planet. Topics of interest include how the biosphere and the evolution of life forms affect the stability of global temperature, ocean salinity, oxygen in the atmosphere and other environmental variables that affect the habitability of Earth. The hypothesis, which is named after the Greek goddess Gaia, was formulated by the scientist James Lovelock and co-developed by the microbiologist Lynn Margulis in the 1970s. The hypothesis was initially criticised for being teleological and contradicting principles of natural selection, but later refinements resulted in ideas framed by the Gaia Hypothesis being used in fields such as Earth system science, biogeochemistry, systems ecology, and the emerging subject of geophysiology. Nevertheless, the Gaia hypothesis continues to attract criticism, and today many scientists consider it to be only weakly supported by, or at odds with, the available evidence. In 2006, the Geological Society of London awarded Lovelock the Wollaston Medal largely for his work on the Gaia theory. Questions asked in this interview : What does Gaia tell us about the Earth? Is global warming really happening? What would the climate be like without humans? Has global warming ever happened before? What can we expect to see in 20 to 30 years from now? What will conditions be like at the end of this century? Are there too many people on the planet? When do you think global warming began? Will global warming cause a mass extinction? Can nuclear power save the planet? What about the problem of nuclear waste? Can nuclear power be used for transport? Could renewable energy be the solution? Do you think that we will ever be able to control our climate? Can we realistically reduce carbon dioxide emissions? Have we passed the tipping point? Could Earth become as lifeless as Mars of Venus? Is there any hope for the human race?

Modern Textual Criticism and Acts 8:37 with Dr. James White

48:24
A response to Dr. White's video "More King James Only Misrepresentation," in which he offered a review of my presentation of his book and the NIV textual footnote on Acts chapter 8 verse 37. A couple of additional points: When I recorded this video I was unaware that Mr. White's doctorate is not from an accredited institution. I don't really care about that but I probably should not refer to him as "Dr." but I won't be re-recording the video. Also, the Byzantine text he shows is simply the Robinson/Peirpoint Majority text. It is not a text anybody ever used in any church anywhere; it is a contrived text form that just shows "majority" Greek mss. readings. He brings it into the display as if it adds something to the discussion, but, it has already been accepted that Acts 8.37 is a minority Greek mss. reading. It's just more flash and no substance. I didn't want to get too bogged down responding to every little detail but that one probably should have had more discussion because people are asking about it. There actually are Byzantine texts that contain the verse.

Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling, the Four Horsemen

01:43
When we mention the term “Four Horsemen”, the first thing that comes into mind is the apocalypse or the end of times. In this case, it is indeed the signs of a relationship that is ending. Here we will take on the four counterparts of these horsemen when it comes to relationships. Using this metaphor, Dr. Gottman can make you understand and see the different communication styles you may have that can predict the end of a relationship.

Advanced Hadith Analysis and Isnad Criticism - Al-Salam Institute

05:24
Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sahih al-Bukhari: Hadith Analysis and Isnad Criticism Shaykh Akram Nadwi will continue to teach Sahih al-Bukhari and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi every Sunday at the new ASI ‘alim classes run, as part of the advanced level course. These are amongst the mother books of the Islamic tradition and need no introduction to advanced students. However, what does need to be mentioned is that the way the Shaykh teaches each of the two books is according to its own unique qualities. In the case of Sahih al-Bukhari, the focus is on why the narrators meet his conditions and other versions within the six books do not, as well as an analysis of the content and arrangement of his book that al-Bukhari uses to argue that sahih hadiths are enough for a Muslim’s religion. For Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi the focus is on the craft of Hadith criticism and al-Tirmidhi’s distinctive grading of each tradition, including the many hadiths with ‘ilal (hidden defects), which he includes within his collection in order to teach about their deficiency. Shaykh Akram’s method of teaching includes writing out the isnad chains and comparing and contrasting the narrators between different versions within the six books of canonical hadith and other collections. Through this, the student sees the practical application of the general principles studied in the subject of Mustalah al-Hadith (Hadith Terminology). In fact, Shaykh Akram stresses time and again to his students that the Hadith experts never relied on general rules alone, but considered each narration as an individual case to be investigated on its own merits. Only through careful analysis of each hadith’s chain of narration and text is it possible to establish its degree of authenticity and meaning. Shaykh Akram’s students, previous and current, including ‘alims well versed in Hadith, have stressed the immense benefit that they have received from their Hadith study with him. If you are serious about one day becoming a Hadith Specialist, or you just wish to have a strong, balanced traditional Islamic education, there is no other accessible course teaching these texts at this level. Shaykh Akram Nadwi: Muhaddith of the Western World By the grace of Allah, the tradition of true Hadith scholarship has remained unbroken until the modern age. Masters of the discipline have remained amongst both the ulama’ of the Arab lands and of the Indian subcontinent. Shaykh Akram Nadwi hails from the Indian city of Lucknow and studied from many great teachers at the famous Nadwatul Ulama, including Shaykh Abu al-Hasan Ali Nadwi. He then embarked on his own rihla, taking from many senior shuyukh of the Arab lands, including the Hadith Master Shaykh ‘Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda. Finally, he was sent to Oxford in the UK, where he began to teach, alongside continued research into the vast ocean of the Hadith. Today, Shaykh Akram has established himself as one of the most knowledgeable Islamic scholars and foremost Hadith masters of the Western world. The quality of his teaching of the technical disciplines of Hadith and his original research into the deep issues of the field is exceptionally rare. He is currently teaching Sahih al-Bukhari and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi in detail whilst writing his own commentary on Sahih Muslim. The care with which he investigates each hadith of these books within the classroom is such that there is no way to know if he will ever return to it again. Those who take this knowledge, benefit, while those who miss it, miss out. It is appropriate for serious students to make sure they avail themselves of the opportunity to study with scholars of this calibre while they are with us, may Allah give all the ulama’ long life, amin! The Benefits of Advanced Hadith Study with Al-Salam Institute • Taught by a traditional Muhaddith and master of Hadith criticism. • Learn the methodology of the great traditional experts of Hadith and how to apply it to real isnad chains. • Become deeply versed in the transmission and interpretation of the authentic prophetic Sunnah from the perspectives of different schools of law. • Join a circle of serious students of Hadith and learn to benefit from deep scholarly interaction with Shaykh Akram. • Gain the Shaykh’s ijazah in the teaching of these key Islamic texts. Following is the detail of this one of best motivational videos for success in Hindi: This Success Video in Hindi starts with a brief about purpose of this educational video. As you might have noticed, that we cover one success habit in each video, but the focus is to cover each of the success principles in detail. Purpose of our success video is not only to provide motivation or information but to give you training, tips, skills and techniques so that you can get benefits of these success mantras by inculcating them, digesting them, understanding them. I have started this life changing video with a motivational story about learning skills. This inspirational story is about a village head who prays to meet enemies while on his way to important task. So this video clearly tells us that we can turn negative comments into learning with our positive thinking of receiving feedback.. First point discussed in this success motivational video is why feedback is important. As discussed in the motivational story in beginning, feedback helps us to grow, develop and achieve goals in life. Moving on with video on success habits, it is very important for our mind to not to take stress and treat feedback in positive thinking. If you want success in life, success in job, success in studies, you need to get into success habit of receiving feedback in right way. It is an important part of success formula; it is an important quality of successful people, achievers, performers, winners. All multinational companies and big companies lay so much stress on taking feedback from customers to increase customer service. Going further with success factors in this Hindi motivational speech, I have given another important point that we should learn to filter feedback as not every criticism pointed us may be right. If you want your life to be success story, you need to follow all such kind of success rules. Now comes the success formula in the next part of these motivational videos for success in life as giving and receiving feedback can play an important between success and failure. The Success key about handling criticism and negative feedback is following these 5 Action Steps:1.) Listen openly: You should practice active listening skills and show positive and confident body language to express your interest in receiving feedback.2.) Don't judge: Many a times we start becoming judgmental about intentions of others. To adapt success habits, you should avoid quick judgment about others. Listen First, Judge Later.3.) Probe: If you are not clear about criticism or improvement areas. You should ask questions, interrogate and ask for examples. You can watch my videos on communication skills in Hindi to learn more about listening skills and speaking skills. Following all these tips will surely bring your life into success people story. 4.) Thank and Appreciate: I was recently watching documentary on discovery channel in Hindi, where a Success guru was giving lot of Success Gyan, he gave lot of stress on this success habits of thanking and appreciating. All these success principles surely make your life better.5.) Action: As we know, success comes after hard work and struggle. So here come some more success tips in Hindi. Once you receive feedback, then you need to act on it by finding positive points to boost your self confidence, negative points to improve yourself, questions to clear doubts and ideas to grow and succeed. Following these success mantras in Hindi, I have also quoted Sant Kabir ji with his educational wordings. Hope this motivational success video will help you in not just knowing how to become successful in life but also implementing these success qualities. We will keep uploading success videos in Hindi to ensure motivational and inspirational doses in your life. Wish you success and Happiness. Himesh Madan Motivational Speaker in India

The False Principles of Abul-Hasan al-Ma'ribī and Alī Hasan al-Halabī Clearly Explained Shaykh Khālid 'Abdur-Rahmān al-Misrī حفظه الله Translation taken from mtws.posthaven.com Translated by Rasheed ibn Estes Barbee Audio download (Arabic only): https://phaven-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/... English translation: http://mtws.posthaven.com/the-false-p... From the False Principles of Abul-Hasan al-Ma'ribī and Alī Hasan al-Halabī: 1) Belittling the people of knowledge and attacking the scholars, especially the scholars of al-Jarh wat-Ta'dīl 2) That it is not binding to accept criticism, even the detailed criticism 3) Their kindness and gentleness with the innovators, while attacking and showing harshness to Ahl-us-Sunnah 4) Their agreement that applying the narrations of the Salaf upon the innovators in our time is extremism. Thus, they do not boycott the innovators, and in fact they warn against boycotting, saying, "This is not the time for boycotting." And these are just a few of the principles from the false principles of al-Ma'ribī and al-Halabī, as ash-Shaykh Khālid mentioned.

John Gottman's The Seven Principles Presentation

I am a counselor at Tapestry Associates in Marietta, GA. I am a marriage and family therapist. Check us out at tapestryassociates.com John Gottman's book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is a fantastic resource for counselors and couples alike to use to improve and build relationships. This presentation goes over the main points that I've used in counseling sessions. I strongly recommend getting a copy of the book. It is a phenomenal read and has numerous exercises and activities that I do not cover in this presentation. I am not affiliated with John Gottman or his marriage therapy certification, but find this book to be a wonderful help to structure marriage therapy sessions. To learn more about me and what I do check out danielpeeks.weebly.com.
