Reflections on 'Sapiens' & 'The Strange Death of Europe'

13:03
I have just re-read יובל נח הררי Yuval Noah Harari's bestselling book 'Sapiens' and finished reading Douglas Murray's (from the The Henry Jackson Society) new, excellent and already bestselling book 'The Strange Death of Europe'. Both have something very important to say about the state of our world. Here are a few thoughts of my own about the books and the work that needs to be done to protect our society.

What is READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM? What does READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM mean?

What does READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM mean? READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM meaning - READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM definition - READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Reader-response criticism is a school of literary theory that focuses on the reader (or "audience") and their experience of a literary work, in contrast to other schools and theories that focus attention primarily on the author or the content and form of the work. Although literary theory has long paid some attention to the reader's role in creating the meaning and experience of a literary work, modern reader-response criticism began in the 1960s and '70s, particularly in the US and Germany, in work by Norman Holland, Stanley Fish, Wolfgang Iser, Hans-Robert Jauss, Roland Barthes, and others. Important predecessors were I. A. Richards, who in 1929 analyzed a group of Cambridge undergraduates' misreadings; Louise Rosenblatt, who, in Literature as Exploration (1938), argued that it is important for the teacher to avoid imposing any "preconceived notions about the proper way to react to any work"; and C. S. Lewis in An Experiment in Criticism (1961). Reader-response theory recognizes the reader as an active agent who imparts "real existence" to the work and completes its meaning through interpretation. Reader-response criticism argues that literature should be viewed as a performing art in which each reader creates their own, possibly unique, text-related performance. It stands in total opposition to the theories of formalism and the New Criticism, in which the reader's role in re-creating literary works is ignored. New Criticism had emphasized that only that which is within a text is part of the meaning of a text. No appeal to the authority or intention of the author, nor to the psychology of the reader, was allowed in the discussions of orthodox New Critics. Traditional text-oriented schools, such as formalism, often think of reader-response criticism as an anarchic subjectivism, allowing readers to interpret a text any way they want. Text-oriented critics claim that one can understand a text while remaining immune to one's own culture, status, personality, and so on, and hence "objectively." To reader-response based theorists, however, reading is always both subjective and objective. Some reader-response critics (uniformists) assume a bi-active model of reading: the literary work controls part of the response and the reader controls part. Others, who see that position as internally contradictory, claim that the reader controls the whole transaction (individualists). In such a reader-active model, readers and audiences use amateur or professional procedures for reading (shared by many others) as well as their personal issues and values. Another objection to reader-response criticism is that it fails to account for the text being able to expand the reader's understanding. While readers can and do put their own ideas and experiences into a work, they are at the same time gaining new understanding through the text. This is something that is generally overlooked in reader-response criticism. Reader-response criticism relates to psychology, both experimental psychology for those attempting to find principles of response, and psychoanalytic psychology for those studying individual responses. Post-behaviorist psychologists of reading and of perception support the idea that it is the reader who makes meaning. Increasingly, cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, neuroscience, and neuropsychoanalysis have given reader-response critics powerful and detailed models for the aesthetic process. In 2011 researchers found that during listening to emotionally intense parts of a story, readers respond with changes in heart rate variability, indicative of increased activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Intense parts of a story were also accompanied by increased brain activity in a network of regions known to be involved in the processing of fear, including amygdala. Because it rests on psychological principles, a reader-response approach readily generalizes to other arts: cinema (David Bordwell), music, or visual art (E. H. Gombrich), and even to history (Hayden White). In stressing the activity of the scholar, reader-response theory justifies such upsettings of traditional interpretations as, for example, deconstruction or cultural criticism.

How to Handle HARSH Criticism

Consider supporting the production of these videos on patreon: https://www.patreon.com/animatorguild Looking back at this video which I just edited, it kinda sounds like I am speaking from a place of authority. Criticism is something which is hard for any creative to deal with, including me! I first wrote this video to help myself to handle criticism in my own life and then I decided that it might be helpful to share this with other people. I also didn't mention anything about haters. I think there is plenty of advice and help out there about identifying and ignoring haters. Trolls and Haters generally will attack your work because of a personal problem they themselves have - they are trying to take out their own personal problems on you, weather it is jealousy, humiliation, frustration. With them, you need to build a thick skin and ignore them - the hardest part is to walk away without replying to them. This video is not about dealing with them, it assumes that the harsh criticism is coming from someone who does have your interests at heart and is delivering tough feedback in the hopes that you will make better artwork. This talk isn’t very good. Dancing with my inner critic | Steve Chapman | TEDxRoyalTunbridgeWells

13:09
Steve Chapman shines a light on his inner critic - that whisper in his ear that constantly tells him he isn’t good enough and that he should never try anything new or risk making a fool of himself. Steve tells the story of how a personal experience of failure led him to begin an MI5 style investigation into his inner critic and how he has used a variety of experimental and creative means to learn to dance with it, rather than do battle with it. Explores the deeper recesses of personality, and talks about his relationship with his own ‘inner critic’ and self-doubt. Using creative practices, gestalt principles and mask work, he shows us that our identity and sense of self isn’t as fixed as we may believe. By learning to dance with his inner critic, rather than fight it, he has been able to notice and understand things he wasn't aware of, and in doing so, liberate more of his own creative ambitions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

What is MIMESIS CRITICISM? What does MIMESIS CRITICISM mean? MIMESIS CRITICISM meaning & explanation

What is MIMESIS CRITICISM? What does MIMESIS CRITICISM mean? MIMESIS CRITICISM meaning - MIMESIS CRITICISM definition - MIMESIS CRITICISM explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Mimesis criticism is a method of interpreting texts in relation to their literary or cultural models. Mimesis, or imitation (imitatio), was a widely used rhetorical tool in antiquity up until the 18th century's romantic emphasis on originality. Mimesis criticism looks to identify intertextual relationships between two texts that go beyond simple echoes, allusions, citations, or redactions. The effects of imitation are usually manifested in the later text by means of distinct characterization, motifs, and/or plot structure. As a critical method, mimesis criticism has been pioneered by Dennis MacDonald, especially in relation to New Testament and other early Christian narratives imitating the "canonical" works of Classical Greek literature. Greek rhetorician Aristotle (4th century b.c.e.) discusses the rhetorical technique of mimesis or imitation; what Aristotle describes, however, is the author's imitation of nature, not earlier literary or cultural models. Philodemus of Gadara (1st century b.c.e.), an Epicurean philosopher and poet and one of Virgil's teachers, affirms that writers of prose histories and fictions used literary models. He writes (rhetorically) in book five of On Poetry, "Who would claim that the writing of prose is not reliant on the Homeric poems?" A Greek historian and rhetorician from the late first century b.c.e./early first century c.e., Dionysius of Halicarnassus represents a change from the Aristotelian rhetorical notion of mimesis, from imitation of nature to imitation of literature. His most important work in this respect, On Mimesis, survives only in fragments. Apparently, most of this work concerned the proper selection of literary models. Roman rhetorician M. Fabius Quintilianus published his twelve-volume Institutio oratoria around 95 c.e. In book 10, Quintilian - who was well-read with respect to both Greek and Latin rhetoricians, including Dionysius - gives advice to teachers who are instructing students in oration. He tells them that, by the time students begin composition, they should be so well-versed in exemplary models that are able to imitate them without physically consulting them (10.1.5). Quintilian writes, For in everything which we teach examples are more effective even than the rules which are taught in the schools, so long as the student has reached a stage when he can appreciate such examples without the assistance of a teacher, and can rely on his own powers to imitate them. (10.1.15; Butler, LCL) He also advises that students constantly reread the exemplary models (10.1.19), not only in sections but all the way through (10.1.20), so that they might be empowered to imitate these models with more craft and subtlety. Of course, the selection of one's literary model is of the utmost importance. In Quintilian's opinion, one could find no better model than Homer, "for he has given us a model and an inspiration for very department of eloquence" (10.1.46; Butler, LCL). When it comes to the act of imitation itself, he writes, There can be no doubt that in art no small portion of our task lies in imitation, since, although invention came first and is all-important, it is expedient to imitate whatever has been invented with success. And it is a universal rule of life that we should wish to copy what we approve in others. It is for this reason that boys copy the shapes of letters that they may learn to write, and that musicians take the voices of their teachers, painters the works of their predecessors, and peasants the principles of agriculture which have been proved in practice, as models for their imitation. In fact, we may note that the elementary study of every branch of learning is directed by reference to some definite standard that is placed before the learner. (10.2.1-2; Butler, LCL)....

Criticism of Relativity and the like NEVER get investigated by Mainstream Science

08:36
David de Hilster talks about one phenomena that keeps those "intellectuals" from becoming critical thinkers and from keeping mainstream science moving forward: honest attempts at investigating scientific challenges to mainstream theory. It is very frustrating. Mainstream physics is akin to mainstream politicians who are experts at avoiding the problems. They have to to keep up the status quo and therefore they NEVER and I mean NEVER closely look at problems brought up by critical thinkers.

Alexander Pope - An Essay on Criticism (part 2) with explanatory notes

18:36
Alexander Pope (1688-1744), pre-eminent poet of the English Augustan Age. Something of a child prodigy, he started scribbling poetry as a boy and taught himself various languages, exposing himself to the classical authors, which would become a lifelong love of his. Highly polished, witty expressions marked his poetry, usually written in heroic couplets (rhyming pairs of, typically self-contained, lines of iambic pentameter). He truly stuck to his own maxim that wit is "what oft was thought but never so well expressed". The Essay on Criticism, begun when Pope was still in his teens, secured for him the reputation of a poet of considerable worth. This second part of the essay describes the failings of modern writers, and hence critics, ("Let such teach others who themselves excel/ And censure freely who have written well"), portending what would be an entire career preoccupied with battling intellectual charlatans and shabby poets. In it he lays down his principles of literary criticism consistently praising the classical authors, and lamenting the moderns, which he saw a group long fallen from the heyday of the ancient world. For modern readers, the essay is Pope's most accessible of his long works. True that 18th century English is not always easy reading; the poem is filled with archaisms (e.g. unhappy wit, gay turn). To this end the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and to a lesser extent Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language help. Yet another challenge lies in seeing through the ornate, figurative language, which is virtually omnipresent and not always apprehended without an understanding of the context. Adding fuel to the fire is Pope's vast erudition, clearly on display here through numerous allusions and obscure references to literary figures of his time and past. These difficulties notwithstanding, the poem is quite readable, not only for its facility and beauty of expression, but also its relevance nowadays. It is remarkable how contemporary the poem's exposition of the human vices feels - pride, defective learning, blind faith, etc. It would be erroneous merely to read the poem as a curiosity of 18th century literature. Human nature has changed little since Pope's time; his moral precepts and admonitions are just as nourishing to read today as they were back then. Many of the poem's lines have passed into common knowledge: "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" as said in Futurama, "To err is human, to forgive divine" "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread". For these reasons Pope is still relevant today and will be for years to come. ABOUT THE READING Reading Pope's poetry has always been a struggle to reconcile two opposing forces. On one hand to justly preserve the meter and rhythm of the poem, and on the other to counteract relentless repetition with natural intonation, breaks and tempo is a challenge. Yet Pope's words are never dull and seem to betray a certain monotony that would rise from its being read aloud. I have tried to lend the performance a gravitas and emotional restraint that I thought appropriate to this poem. The result, some would say, is monotonous and devoid of emotion. But somehow I find this interpretation preferable to a relaxed, more natural sounding one. In any case, the purpose of this video is merely to facilitate reading of the essay in whatever way. I have found audiobooks an excellent way to do that and I hope there are those out there who do not find my performance so intolerable as to prevent following along with the text. In order to aid understanding, selected words have been annotated with explanations in the video. A paraphrase can be found at: http://elnebrija.io/criticism.html . Para amaury

What does CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY mean? CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY meaning - CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY definition - CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Corporate social responsibility (CSR, also called corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social responsibly or responsible business)] is one of the most important business ethics quality for an organization to become successful. It began to develop in the 1970s along with business ethics. The importance of social responsibility is it can decrease any undesirable characteristics towards an organization image. In business ethics there are four level of social responsibility which include—economics, legal, ethical and philanthropic. The reputation of an organization is very important and implementing social responsibility can increase positive satisfaction results towards stakeholders and customers. CSR goes beyond compliance and engages in "actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law." The binary choice between 'complying' with the law and 'going beyond' the law must be qualified with some nuance. In many areas such as environmental or labor regulations, employers can choose to comply with the law, to go beyond the law, but they can also choose to not comply with the law, such as when they deliberately ignore gender equality or the mandate to hire disabled workers. There must be a recognition that many so-called 'hard' laws are also known as 'weak' laws, weak in the sense that they are poorly enforced and with no or little control and/or no or few sanctions in case of non-compliance. 'Weak' law must not be confused with Soft law The aim is to increase long-term profits and shareholder trust through positive public relations and high ethical standards to reduce business and legal risk by taking responsibility for corporate actions. CSR strategies encourage the company to make a positive impact on the environment not only on the organizations, but on stakeholders including consumers, employees, investors, communities, competitors and other instead of creating a negative impact towards them. CSR has a neutral impact on financial outcomes. Investors are increasing the demand every year for an organizations to develop social irresponsibility which increases a companies’ performance level in positive and effective way. Some issues revolving Social responsibility are consumer protection issues, sustainability, and corporate governance. Critics questioned the "lofty" and sometimes "unrealistic expectations" in CSR. or that CSR is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations.Proponents argue that corporations increase long-term profits by operating with a CSR perspective, while critics argue that CSR distracts from businesses' economic role. Corporate governance is another major issue with social responsibility. There are less unethical decisions made when corporate governance is involved. Political sociologists became interested in CSR in the context of theories of globalization, neoliberalism and late capitalism. Some sociologists viewed CSR as a form of capitalist legitimacy and in particular point out that what began as a social movement against uninhibited corporate power was transformed by corporations into a 'business model' and a 'risk management' device, often with questionable results. CSR is titled to aid an organization's mission as well as serve as a guide to what the company represents for its consumers. Business ethics is the part of applied ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business environment. ISO 26000 is the recognized international standard for CSR. Public sector organizations (the United Nations for example) adhere to the triple bottom line (TBL). It is widely accepted that CSR adheres to similar principles, but with no formal act of legislation.

Philosopher Karl Popper - A Portrait

45:07
Karl Popper was an Austro-British philosopher regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of science in the 20th century. He is known for his attempt to repudiate the classical observationalist-inductivist form of scientific method in favor of empirical falsification. He is also known for his opposition to the classical justificationist account of knowledge which he replaced with critical rationalism. He vigorously defended liberal democracy and the principles of social criticism that he came to believe made a flourishing "open society" possible. Karl Popper was of great interest to Alan Saunders, the science broadcaster who died in 2012. Alan produced this portrait of Karl Popper first broadcast January 2000 for ABC's National's Science Show by Robyn Williams. Karl Popper himself makes an appearance here, as well as Bryan Magee, Sir John Eccles, Jeremy Shearmur, Malachi Hacohen, and Peter Munz.
