Lacquer Industry in India

10:16
See how tiny insects are farmed to create art and handicraft items, and fuel an entire industry! India is known as a land of agriculture and even though we now feature malls and air-conditioned office complexes aplenty, we still remain rooted to the soil. And while farmers grow crops elsewhere, in Jharkhand they grow something quite different – insects! In the Indian state of Jharkhand, cultivators rear Lac insects or Kerria lacca - the tiny beetles that produce a resin which we turn into lacquer. Research and Development on the cultivation and processing of lac is done at the Indian Lac Research Institute in Ranchi. Wildfilmsindia sent a team down to Jharkhand to understand how lacquer is still being produced in India, and the support that the industry is receiving from the central and state governments, in order to keep this ancient craft and industry alive. A tiny red insect produces shellac. Swarms of these insects feed on certain trees that grow mainly in India and Thailand and are known as lac trees. One of their favourites is the Indian Flame-of-the-Forest tree, also known as dhak, palash or tesu. The flowers of this tree are also, incidentally, used to make the traditional orange gulaal used during the Holi festival. Kusum and Ber trees are also favourite hosts of the lacca beetle of which the male is a reddish-black and the female is a yellowish-brown… Insecticide is sprayed on to the host trees in order to prevent ants and other insect predators from eating up the lacca beetles. Horticulture crops and vegetables are often mixed into the land use, to create a Lac integrated farming system, among the Flame-of-the-forest tree plantations. Workers collect the sticks on which the lacquer resin is affixed from the tree’s branches, as part of the refining process. They cut hordes of these twigs or sticks and tie them up in bundles. Then each stick is scratched vigorously by workers to scrape off the secretion which is the resin secreted by the insects. This process can also be done mechanically in a lac scraper - crusher, followed by further mechanical action in a grader and lac winnower. Since the resulting ground material is quite impure, containing resin, insect remains, twigs and leaves. The mixture is forced through the lac grader to sort out the larger impurities. It is then washed and poured into another machine and water is poured to finely cleanse it. Water is also admixed to create crude or pure lac dyes which tend to be deep red coloured liquids. The mixture is spread out on the floor to dry. This lac is finally used in a number of high-end handicraft and manufactured products in the manufacturing of lac dye, lacquer bangles, paints, glass ceramics and jewelry. Even vinyl records used to be treated with lac. Other products include hydrolysed lac sealing wax, abrasive wheels, lac dye used in metal foil, bangles, lac colour for paintings, storage boxes for jewellery and other fashionable high value items, and nail polish. Lac is used to polish fruit and keep it fresh and shiny for longer with the help of a lac based fruit coating. Lac is even used to make certain indigenous medicines! Lacquer is an ancient art and industry – it may not survive for long in modern times, given the complexity of cultivating the lacca beetles, harvesting their resin and making products that fewer and fewer people seem to know about and may not be willing to pay for. Nonetheless, it is important for us to understand how this unique product is created and how much cultural and historical importance lacquer was given in ancient India and China. EXPANSION OF RUBBER INDUSTRY IN THE PHILIPPINES - BIZWATCH

03:02
THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE OR DA IS LOOKING TO EXPAND THE ERSTWHILE SLEEPING PHILIPPINE RUBBER INDUSTRY. THE DA IS REPORTEDLY SEEKING INVESTORS WHO CAN MANUFACTURE OTHER RUBBER-BASED MATERIALS SUCH AS CONDOMS. THIS WAS ECHOED BY PHILIPPINE RUBBER RESEARCH INSTITUTE OR PRRI EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RODOLFO GALANG. GALANG SAID THAT THE PHILIPPINES IS A “VIABLE AND HEALTHY MARKET” FOR CONDOM MANUFACTURERS AND STRESSED THE NEED FOR A CONDOM MANUFACTURER AS AN INVESTOR BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE ONE IN THE COUNTRY. WITH THE PHILIPPINE BIG POPULATION THAT CONTINUES TO EXPAND EVERY YEAR, WE ARE ONLY IMPORTING OUR CONDOM SUPPLIES FROM MALAYSIA AND THAILAND. WHILE THE DEPT. OF HEALTH IS DISTRIBUTING CONDOMS AS PART OF THEIR EXISTING PROGRAM, GALANG RUES THE FACT THAT THE PHILIPPINES IS STILL IMPORTING CONDOMS. WHAT WE NEED IN THIS COUNTRY, GALANG SAID, IS A PLANT THAT WILL PROCESS LATEX FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CONDOMS. CURRENTLY, THE PHILIPPINES HAS 25 NATURAL RUBBER-PROCESSING PLANTS, AND MOST OF THESE SERVE THE NEEDS OF TIRE MANUFACTURERS. IF WE CAN HAVE OUR OWN CONDOM MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY, GALANG SAID, WE CAN GENERATE MORE JOBS AND LIKEWISE HELP CONTROL OUR OWN POPULATION. HE ALSO SAID THAT WITH THE DROP IN PRICE OF RUBBER, THE ASSOCIATION OF NATURAL RUBBER-PRODUCING COUNTRIES IS STRATEGIZING TO INCREASE LOCAL CONSUMPTION BY PUTTING UP MORE MANUFACTURING PLANTS FOR VARIOUS PRODUCTS. THESE PRODUCTS INCLUDE MEDICAL GLOVES, CATHETERS AND HOUSEHOLD GLOVES. THE PHILIPPINES PRODUCES MORE RUBBER THAN OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES BUT OUT RUBBER INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO BE UNDERDEVELOPED. OTHER COUNTRIES LIKE THAILAND, MALAYSIA, INDONESIA AND VIETNAM HAVE OUTDONE US IN THIS FIELD. ACCORDING TO GALANG, THESE COUNTRIES DO NOT SELL RAW RUBBER ANYMORE IN THEIR LOCAL MARKET. THEY ARE ALSO IMPORTING RAW MATERIALS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. IN 2016, THE PHILIPPINES’ RUBBER PRODUCTION GREW TO 110,000 METRIC TONS OR A GROWTH OF 10% COMPARED TO 2015. ALTHOUGH WE ARE PRODUCING MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR OUR YEARLY CONSUMPTION, OUR ACTUAL CONSUMPTION IN THE COUNTRY IS ONLY AROUND 30,000 METRIC TONS. THE REST ARE EXPORTED TO MALAYSIA, SOUTH KOREA, JAPAN AND CHINA. THE LOCAL RUBBER INDUSTRY IS EXPECTED TO GROW FURTHER THIS YEAR. RUBBER TREES PLANTED IN 2010 AND 2011 HAVE ALREADY MATURED, ACCORDING TO DIRECTOR GALANG. THERE ARE ABOUT 50,000 HECTARES MORE THAT NEED REPLANTING. THIS YEAR, THE PHILIPPINE RUBBER RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS PLANNING TO REPLANT RUBBER IN 15,000 HECTARES OF PLANTATION.

Processing human urine to recycle nutrients into fertilizer - Science Nation

03:49
Engineering a system that transforms human urine from a waste product into a fertilizer for more sustainable agriculture This sustainable agriculture research relies on a unique contribution from humans -- urine. And, once you get beyond the "giggle" factor, it's an idea that is proving itself worthy of investigation. Fertilizer is made of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that require energy to produce. Human urine is full of those same nutrients, but we literally flush them down the toilet. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), University of Michigan environmental engineer Nancy Love and a team that includes the non-profit, Rich Earth Institute, are fine-tuning new methods to process human urine into fertilizer. The team wants to create a more sustainable fertilizer while at the same time eliminating a waste that contributes to water pollution. The research in this episode was supported by NSF award #1639244, INFEWS/Track 3: Advancing Technologies and Improving Communication of Urine-Derived Fertilizers for Food Production within a Risk-Based Framework. The INFEWS – Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems -- awards aim to help decision makers better address human needs and protect the natural world. The INFEWS goals for scientists and policy makers include a new understanding of the food-energy-water system, insights from innovative modeling, and cutting-edge technologies to reduce waste and increase efficiencies. 12500 liters of milk ISRAEL AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY

10:14
Israeli agriculture 12500 liter of milk - wonderful Guinness World Records Agriculture in Israel is a highly developed industry: Israel is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world-leader in agricultural technologies despite the fact that the geography of Israel is not naturally conducive to agriculture. More than half of the land area is desert, and the climate and lack of water resources do not favor farming. Only 20% of the land area is naturally arable. To reach 12,000 litres of milk a year, double the Australian average for each cow, requires getting the cow in calf just at the right time. "This released somehow the heat stress, and milk production can be maintained during summer." The kinnow is a variety of citrus fruit cultivated extensively in Pakistan and Indian Punjab Province. It is a hybrid of two citrus cultivars — "King" (Citrus nobilis) x "Willow Leaf" (Citrus deliciosa) — first developed by H. B. Frost[1] at the Citrus Research Centre of the University of California, Riverside, USA. After evaluation, the kinnow was released as a new variety for commercial cultivation in 1935. In 1940, Punjab Agriculture College and Research Institute, Lyallpur (Pakistan), introduced the kinnow. In India this variety was introduced by J. C. Bakhshi in 1954 at the Punjab Agricultural University, Regional Fruit Research Station, Abohar. It has become an important variety in the Punjab provinces of both India and Pakistan, occupying a major part of the area under cultivation for fruit crops. * 1 Description * 2 Seedless kinnow * 3 Export from Asia * 4 Harvesting and handling * 5 Fruit processing * 6 References The kinnow fruit is large and orange, with 12 to 25 seeds and a globular shape. It matures in January or February. This "easy peel" citrus has assumed special economic importance and export demand due to its high juice content, special flavour, and as a rich source of vitamin C. The factors which have contributed to the success of this fruit are its beautiful golden-orange colour (a major asset from a marketing viewpoint), its abundant juice, and its excellent aroma and taste. Its trees are highly productive; it is not uncommon to find 1000 fruits per tree. Handsome returns, much higher than those obtained from most of other fruit crops, can be had from well looked-after kinnow orchards by adopting proper methods of cultivation. * Young Kinnow tree in bearing Seedless kinnow Kinnow fruits have more seeds per wedge than other citrus fruits. The high seed content of this variety is a major hindrance in out-of-hand eating. Some workers have made efforts to select seedless kinnows by survey or by the use of mutants. The seeds of kinnow are naturally diploid or tetraploid. Seedless triploid varieties have been developed, but these are still undergoing testing to ascertain whether the fruit is healthy for consumption. [edit] Export from Asia Most of the target export markets of the Pakistani kinnow are those of developing countries. Only 2.6 percent of kinnow exports target the markets of developed countries, which is due to the emerging demand for seedless kinnow by the developed countries. About 61 percent of total world exports of oranges and mandarins are of seedless varieties. Some important export markets for kinnow are: Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Netherlands, Philippines, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Harvesting and handling Kinnow harvesting starts when the fruit's external colour becomes orange, from December to February. The best harvesting time is mid-January to mid-February, when the fruit attains a TSS/acid ratio of 12:1 to 14:1. The fruit quality declines in later pickings. Fruits are harvested by clipping the stem with the help of sharp clippers (secateurs). The stem is cut as short as possible to avoid mechanical injury to the fruit in packing and transits. As it is a comparatively loose rind fruit, harvesting by pulling fruits with one's hands is avoided. Coating kinnow fruits with commercial waxes can increase the shelf life up to 60 days. The fruit can be stored in cold storage at a temperature of 4-5°C and a relative humidity of 85-90%. Packing of kinnows Picking of Kinnow with clippers Fruit processing Food processing includes the selection of good-quality mandarins. The ideal kinnow is firm to slightly soft, smooth-skinned with no deep grooves, and deep orange to almost red. Human hands can better judge and avoid product with soft spots, dull and faded coloring or rough and bumpy skin. Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, Punjab has developed new technologies for obtaining higher yields of better quality fruits under the conditions of Indian Punjab. These fruits can be stored at room temperature conditions or under cold storage conditions. Text Reference Wikipedia

Farm to Table: UC Davis Tomatoes

03:12
Each year, UC Davis grows 180,000 pounds of processing tomatoes in their organic research plots at the Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility, part of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI), located eight miles west of the UC Davis campus. The tomatoes are grown as part of the Long Term Research on Agriculture Systems (LTRAS) study, which is a "hundred year" study located at Russell Ranch. The goal of LTRAS is to understand the relationship between sustainable farming practices and external inputs. Sustainability is assessed from long-term trends in yield, profitability, efficiency in use of limited resources (water or energy), and environmental impact. Russell Ranch has been growing tomatoes in their organic and conventional research plots for 16 years. Traditionally, the tomatoes are machine harvested and sold to local canneries for large-scale canned tomato production. This year 8,200 pounds of tomatoes will be kept on campus and transformed into nutritious roasted tomato sauce that will feed the campus community in the resident dining commons and catering functions throughout the year. In years past, the UC Davis Dining Services Culinary Support Center has procured locally-grown and in most cases, organic ingredients to produce a house-made roasted tomato sauce from suppliers throughout the greater Northern California region. But 2010 marks the first year that the Culinary Support Center will capture the core ingredient directly from an on-campus source. The process will capture the freshest ingredients to maintain exceptional taste and nutrients while tomatoes are at their seasonal peak.
