Ask a designer - Mario Botta on architectural style | Architecture design

04:15
The architecture of Swiss architect Mario Botta is scattered around the world. His signature works include San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, the cathedral in Evry, France and the Samsung museum of art in Seoul. Red bricks are his trademark. At the age of 73, he'd added another structure to his repertoire. The Fiore di Pietra restaurant in Switzerland. It's perched some 1700 meters on Monte Generoso, like a flower overlooking the valley below. DW Euromaxx is bringing engaging insights into European culture and lifestyles to a global audience. Sketch like an Architect (Techniques + Tips from a Real Project)

08:09
Follow along as I work through a few rough sketches for a new project; I discuss the key style points and techniques you can use to develop your own architectural sketching style. Each sketching vignette includes many tips, but broadly they fall under the following headings: 1) Simply your toolset: fewer tools = fewer decisions 2) Start small: move quickly, be less precise, less precious 3) Line work: architectural sketching is a line art, not a fine art 4) Annotations: helps create a layered esthetic, describes things you're not able to easily show 5) Media + Implements: how changing these from time to time can spur new ideas. 6) Practice: the one thing guaranteed to improve your architectural sketching technique. **Here's the link to GET INVOLVED in my NEW PROJECT: http://thirtybyforty.com/new-project // GEAR I USE // CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template ARCHITECT'S TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL ARCHITECTURE ESSENTIAL TOOLS: * http://thirtybyforty.com/archi-gear PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR: *http://thirtybyforty.com/my-photo-gear MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music #architecture #architect #architecturetutorial -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Architectural Design Process | Form, Orientation and Sunlight

Learn how you can use sunlight to locate, orient, shape, and inspire the details for your architectural design. In this video, I walk you through the design process for a project whose form, orientation, and details were all developed by carefully analyzing the solar path on the building site. In addition, I discuss: - how to read a solar chart (and where to download one) - what app I prefer to use for solar planning - passive heating and cooling - daylighting concepts - alternate ways to use the sun - solar aspect, solar noon, azimuth, and altitude - how to design for competing site agendas Resources mentioned: **White pen I'm using (affiliate): http://thirtybyforty.com/signo **Get it Right with Amelia Lee - The Undercover Architect** (podcast) https://undercoverarchitect.com/podcast/ **Solar charts** http://solardat.uoregon.edu/PolarSunChartProgram.html https://www.gaisma.com/ https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@4957320 **Sunseeker app** https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sun-seeker/ // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

How to Write Like An Architect (+ Worksheet)

10:35
Tips + techniques for learning how to write like an architect with a worksheet to guide you. Sharing my favorite tools and reference materials you can use to learn the graphic conventions architects use to annotate their sketches. An updated guide to help you develop your own personal architectural lettering style. Even though digital production has made the architectural handwriting tradition less essential, I would argue learning a handwriting style is still a relevant exercise. As visual people, it forms a significant part of our personal graphic style. So, whether you're an architect, a student, a graphic designer, or simply journaling each day, developing a legible, clear, and consistent handwriting style remains important. Timestamps: 0:30 Tools you’ll need (just trace + a felt-tipped pen) http://thirtybyforty.com/trace + http://thirtybyforty.com/ultra-fine-point-sharpie 1.01 Worksheet (download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/write-like-an-architect-worksheet ) 2:09 Style guide + letter-by-letter tutorial 7:23 Numbers 9:00 Essential Reference Book http://thirtybyforty.com/architectural-graphics 9:41 Why - I think - you should bother learning this to write like this The Origin Story I didn't mention this in the video, but it's interesting to know how this style of writing came to be and why all architects share a similar style of handwriting. Before the computer, there were teams of people responsible for drafting a set of architectural drawings so a floor plan may have been started by one and then passed off to be revised and finished by many others. This meant that all the hand lettered notes and dimensions had to be consistent between each person. Everything had to be clear because a misinterpreted note on a drawing could make for a costly construction error. Because upper case letters are visually distinct they were difficult to confuse with other letters like you might with a lowercase “L” and a lowercase “I” for example. There were also compositional reasons for choosing uppercase letterforms too. When laying out and composing a sheet of drawings there’s an art to arranging the graphics on the page and the notations they’re a large part of the visual style. Upper case letters don’t have descenders - no part of the letter goes below the baseline and this makes them a lot easier to lay out as graphic elements on the drawing and you can pack things in a lot closer than you could if there were descenders as you would if you used lowercase letters. // GEAR I USE // CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template ARCHITECT'S TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL ARCHITECTURE ESSENTIAL TOOLS: * http://thirtybyforty.com/archi-gear PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR: *http://thirtybyforty.com/my-photo-gear MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music #writelikeanarchitect #architectureletteringtechniques #handwriting -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Industrial Style : Using Metal Mesh in Home Design

08:34
In this video I discuss how to put metal mesh to work in your home. As an architect I'm always searching for new materials to use in my residential work. I’m particularly drawn to adapting simple, utilitarian, industrial materials for use in the home. Industrial metal mesh is an excellent example of this and one that deserves consideration for both interior and exterior use. I review the different types of mesh available from bar grating and metal fabrics to screening and wire meshes. I discuss the substrates and specific applications. Each is illustrated with images depicting their use. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Modern House Design with Beautiful Architectural Style of Secondary Skin

10:27
This modern house is known as Properly Breathing House. It is a residential project designed by H&P Architects in 2015. It is located in Dong Anh Town, Dong Anh District, Hanoi, Vietnam. A “suffocating” situation Just 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) far from the center of Hanoi, the suburban district Dong Anh has witnessed pervasive urbanization – one of the major causes for a trend towards a maximum use of volume and quantity of construction areas. Lesser importance has been attached to the quality of used space and surrounding scenery. This has resulted in a large number of “suffocating” buildings as often found in newly planned, stuffy urban areas characterized with land plot subdivision for building row houses in Vietnam. A “properly breathing” solution Featured in both living and working space, a “properly breathing” house serves as a solution to the quality improvement of used space by creating a natural sense of breathing rhythm in monsoon tropical conditions, which is attributed to the two built-in functions: The Inside and outside. The inside offers many voids while the outside has double-skin facade including the inner layer as all-glass panels; the between as corridor for movement; the outer layer as recycled ceramic bricks (40cmx40cm[16inx16in]). Pot plants are also randomly arranged to absorb the humidity and mitigate calorific radiation. Together with the inner duplex, the layer of ceramic bricks is to purify dust and smoke, suck in fresh air and take heat away through open panels alternated with pot plants on the facade. This filter helps revitalize the architectural space by balancing the breathing of human and nature, and promoting the connection and interaction between the inner and outer scenery, roofs with creepers above and pot plants and vegetables below, sunlight and shade. ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Modern House with Beautiful Secondary Skin Designed To be Passively Environmentally Responsive == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-wTPkwR6vI Sustainable Home Design Created from Adoption Style of Combination Architecture and Agriculture == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxWPyYSoxcU Rustic House Design with Combination of Elegant Simplicity of Modern Design Principles & Rustic Feel == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7CtfRsqkRA ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. Modern House Design with Large Spans and Slender Beams Architectural Style

11:02
Modern House Design - The design of this functional residence, which emphasized visual connection between living areas, features grand clean modern lines. The integration of most rooms with the living/entertaining areas, enabled the use of ample glazed doors and window openings over large spans; all framed by spectacular surrounding scenery. The search for materials that promoted contrasting balance and yet, defined each element in its totality, has driven the architectural finishes palette. This design fostered large spans and slender beams, which created a structural challenge, given the unrefined capability at the work site. Lengthy meetings with the structural engineer eventually provided the most cost effective solution. Despite accommodating all mechanical services in dedicated plant rooms, the building facades remained uncompromised, giving prominence to high ceilings and cross ventilation into living areas via automated high-level windows. Modern House Design - The use of skylights permitted efficient natural lighting and ventilation to the ensuites, walk-in robes and bedrooms circulation areas. Contemporary Home Design with Modern Tropical and Minimalist Time Less Architecture Style

10:10
This Contemporary Home Design is known as Malouna villa. It is an exclusive private residential project located on the North Coast of Koh Samui Island in Bang Po, Thailand. Lying on a quiet part of beautiful Laem Noi Beach along Koh Samui’s northern shore, Villa Malouna boasts 45m of pristine beach frontage, with views across to the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. The 750 sqm GFA are organised around a central garden to provide a feeling of large and open space just after the main entrance. The 7 bedrooms up to 23 beds of Malouna villa are spread around this garden. The project develops a modern tropical and minimalist time less architecture. A combination of ideal location, cutting-edge design, luxurious finishes and a layout designed for easy living, results in a contemporary beach villa with flow and movement that makes the most of Samui’s climate, views and light. The composition is using the contrast of two main materials / colours: white blocks and dark teak timber. Due to its North orientation the ventilation and sun control of the main facades are well managed. The project develops a special attention to the tropical climate and eco-friendly design. The roofs have large overhangs with fixed louvers to protect the façade from the sun. Besides, the main areas provide important oversized opening to minimize the indoor / outdoor barrier, and to offer a natural ventilation with a cross opening. These rooms are designed for indoor-outdoor living, with stack-away doors which completely open up the rooms to the gorgeous island climate. With the living room being open on three sides, the gentle sea breeze cools the space, helped by ceiling fans. The white terrazzo floors throughout the villa are cool under foot. The interior design is also using the contrast. The walls have different white and grey shades painting, combined with a tropical solid timber for the furniture. ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Contemporary House Design Surrounded By Beautiful Vegetation and Landscape in Bandung, Indonesia == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O-2EzKMaMg Future House with Beautiful Organic Shape and Wooden Construction == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPD331Zm66Y Luxury Modern House Design with Long Window and Sense of Levity == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGanMBCHSKE ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. The Shed Roof - An Architect's Review of a Modern Classic

07:54
In this video I discuss the reasons for choosing a shed roof shape as well as the design implications for doing so. Sheds are structurally simple, site responsive forms that are finely tuned to passive solar collection. With opportunities for daylighting via clerestories, rainwater harvesting and other aesthetic benefits they're a great choice to meld traditional and contemporary design languages. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

House Design with Combination of Etnic Traditional and Modern Architecture Style

08:18
Canadian designer David Lombardi has created the Villa Sapi in Indonesia. This beach-front rental villa combines different interior styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary, which results in a unique and exciting experience for its guests. Canadian designer David Lombardi’s concept of ‘Function over Form’ leaves Villa Sapi’s guests with a sense of discovery and surprise at every twist and turn, ranging from the traditionally styled, grass-roofed building that houses the main kitchen to a futuristic home theatre. Furnishings carry a signature colour theme of black, red and lime green, while the walls are adorned with flair – bamboo, water cascades and conceptual artwork. The first clue to the quirky nature of the artwork is a white sculpture in the coconut grove garden which, in huge black letters, suggests that we should ‘Stop Making Sense. The view from the villa’s open-sided living and dining room, bedrooms and bathrooms is unrivalled; here guests can look forward to a vista that is ever-changing with the moods of the sea, sky, neighbouring islands, distant mountains, forests and colourful fishing boats. At night, after a magnificent sunset, the views become even more magical as the moon’s reflection twinkles on the water, presenting a scene of tranquillity and unforgettable beauty.” ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Modern House Design With Rigid Shape of Box and Reflecting Pool On The Roof == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uCp9RZ71Fg Modern House Design with with Strong Visual and Physical Connections to the Natural Forest Landscape == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKFNw-JNFOM Home Remodel Ideas - Remodeling 1960s House to Modern Contemporarywith Large Glazed Sliders == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYxURq3uc3g ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. Inside Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent's California Dream House | Open Door | Architectural Digest

08:24
In this episode of Open Door, celebrity designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent (stars of TLC's Nate & Jeremiah By Design) give Architectural Digest a full-access house tour around their spectacular 1928 Spanish Colonial home in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The house clocks in at nearly 9,000 square feet. Past the front door there’s the gorgeous grand stairway with its original wrought-iron balustrade, straight out of a movie from Hollywood’s Golden Age. Then room after room bathed in glorious sunlight, gurgling fountains, and that heavenly oak tree, literally topping everything off. And, of course, there’s Poppy, the mistress of the manor. Not even Central Casting could produce a more scrumptious sprite. The house's facelift entailed installing floors of antique marble to demarcate points of entry and transition; stripping, bleaching, and waxing the existing mahogany paneling in the dining room; replacing fireplace mantels and hardware with antique models; reworking the kitchen with new fixtures and surfaces; and furnishing the many rooms of the home in signature Berkus-Brent style. As for what constitutes clean and masculine in this context, the designers layered the house with rustic French, Swedish, and American furnishings of wood and stone, juxtaposed with more tailored Continental pieces by the likes of Jacques Adnet, Maria Pergay, Angelo Mangiarotti, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The through line is the doggedly neutral palette; Berkus and Brent rely on texture and patina to animate their personal interiors. The one exception to the rainbow-of-beige rule is Poppy’s bedroom and playroom. In her bedroom, Poppy has the beginnings of a proper art collection, stocked with gifts from her parents’ friends, including a dreamy mobile by Julia Condon and a Michael Hainey hummingbird painting. For Berkus and Brent, the one other space that seems to deviate from the distilled masculinity of the rest of the house is the master bathroom, which features hand-painted murals by James Mobley along with architectural details of a Prunella marble richly veined in deep purple and brown. The couple took advantage of the ample space beyond the bathroom to install two very serious his-and-his closets. In the atrium, a 19th-century bench with Kravet-velvet upholstery sits atop antique Spanish tiles from Paris Ceramics. 19th-century English glass pendant; 1950s low table from a Paris flea market; vintage club chair in a Carolina Irving Textiles stripe. In the living room, a sofa by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, a circa-1950 Italian chair, and a pair of 1940s linen club chairs surround a marble cocktail table from Hollywood At Home. A 1950s Italian sconce hangs above a 1960s English bench covered in a Lee Jofa fabric; Belgian linen curtains by RH. In the kitchen, the island is surrounded by circa-1960 French barstools; sink fittings by Waterstone; 19th-century French lanterns. Backsplash and surrounding countertops by Ollin Stone; Whitechapel brass knobs. In the dining room, 1950s Jacques Adnet chairs join a 19th-century English table. A painting by Matt Connors hangs above a Directoire limestone mantel; circa-1970 Georges Pelletier ceramic pendant lights. In the gallery, a 19th-century Italian bookcase, an 18th-century Swedish table, and a 1950s American bench. The playroom's "memory" board and table, by RH Baby & Child; sofa and rug by RH Teen. Floor pillows and hippo basket from Anthropologie. In Poppy's room, a wallpaper by Apparatus and ZAK + FOX hosts art by Hunt Slonem, Michael Hainey, Fernando Bengoechea, and Mary Little. A Julia Condon mobile hangs over an armchair by Cisco Home wearing a Mexican Otomi textile; crib, table, and chair by RH Baby & Child; Nate Berkus stool for Target; Caitlin Wilson rug. In the master bath, a James Mobley mural and marble molding and panels from Waterworks. Tub by Signature Hardware, with Waterworks fittings; Duravit sink. Brent and Berkus's RH bed, dressed in Matteo linens, is flanked by 1970s Italian tables. The circa-1960 chairs wear an Edelman Leather suede. Circa-1950 French bronze saucer light; custom Roman shades by The Shade Store; Maria Pergay steel table; HD Buttercup rug. The pergola is painted in Benjamin Moore's Alabaster. RH pendant lights; vintage Kreiss chairs; Pottery Barn pillows. Poppy wears a Marysia Bumby swimsuit. Contemporary House Design with Traditional Javanese ‘Joglo’ Building Style and The Steel Structure

07:38
http://goo.gl/m5EgD4 Contemporary House Design - This House is known as House 1. It is a residential project completed by Alexis Dornier in 2015 and located in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Designed around three historic ‘centerpieces’ of traditional Javanese ‘joglo’ building style, the steel structure becomes the contemporary continuation of the structure. Skylights and a floating mezzanine level highlight respect the 3 artifacts as ‘objet trouvé’. The person can explore these artifacts like an archaeologist, from every angle through a 3 dimensional experience. Under the loft like living room are two master guest suites with bathrooms – accessed through a suspended spiral staircase. ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Modern House Design Ideas with Concept Creating Interior Lived Open to Garden - Casa LQ 20 == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvLO71Tniu0 Modern House Style with Unique Facad - Unfurled House == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7i9f0zbNCc SubUrban House Remodel with Minimalist Modern Interior Design Claremont Residence == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laIioebEdOk ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent) - An Incredible Resource

06:53
With more than 581,000+ architectural drawings, photos, and documents, for you to download and use as you please, I couldn't keep this incredible resource a secret any longer. The HABS (Historical American Buildings Survey) along with HAER (engineering), and HALS (landscape) are a collection of building surveys from the American architectural, engineering, building and landscape culture maintained by the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The program was born in the 1930's during the Great Depression as a means to put unemployed architects to work with a mission to preserve and document the architectural heritage of America. Since then, the archive has catalogued more than 43,000 individual structures and more are added each year. In it, you'll find high res photographs, charts, descriptions, I use it for: creative inspiration, precedent research, to improve my architectural drawing, graphics and delineation techniques, and to study details from some of America's most famous works of architecture. And, if you're searching for thesis topics, look no further. Simply search under 'Subjects' and you'll see a list of every building typology you can imagine (and a few you didn't know existed!) HABS can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/hh/ That first architecture class, the one I slept through? To be fair, it was a slide lecture given at 8am, in a dark lecture hall...no amount of coffee would've helped... Let's Design Cedar Flags Ep.5 - Modern Architecture Style Monsieur Frites Building - Planet Coaster

21:16
Cedar Flags is slowly coming together. This episode is focused on the construction of the modern architecture style building that houses our Monsieur Frites stand. This episode is fairly light in terms of the amount of work done but the level of detail to get this building up and running took nearly 5 hours. In the last video I asked if we should keep the modern styled building that we began in the timelapse. A bunch of you guys said in the comments to stick with it and do some interesting detail work to make it look interesting. So that's what this episode is all about. The building is mostly done out of modern brick but it has accent pieces made out of the art shapes. The art blocks we are using are colored black to match with the trim in the windows. I really like how this aesthetic turned out. The building definitely has a contrast to the building that we worked on in the last episode but it keeps this little coffee plaza interesting. Using a comment from the last episode, we design a small space out back of the building for things like employee rest areas and trash collection. This is the level of realism that I want to continue to work into this series! Tuscan Architecture Design Elements Style Home Design House Floor Plans Photos

03:43
Tuscan architecture incorporates modern-day and also classic weathers that comprise pure Vintage Europe. The beauty of architecture Tuscan style originates from the typical custom crafted all-natural rock. This consists of sedimentary rock, travertine and marble. Terra-cotta floor and also roofing system ceramic tiles are often made use of to give the antique feeling. In Tuscan architecture, wood beams are often reconditioned from Tuscan farmhouses. It has actually taken centuries of human labor to produce the Tuscany of preferred imagination, that organized, well-tended landscape of wineries, olive groves as well as ancient hilltop towns. But there are still pockets of this legendary Italian region that male has actually not completely subjugated, as well as the wild hills outside the walled community of Anghiari, at the eastern edge of Tuscany, are amongst them. Deeply forested, they are the home of foxes, deer, porcupines, boars and a scattering of solitary stone farmhouses, including one left framework that caught the eye of a Dallas couple. Wanting to make a second house, they commence transforming it right into a 6,000-square-foot vacation home, an odyssey that would take 12 years of preparation, repair as well as structure.
