In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside. Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments! Thousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. Many of these containers eventually sink to the deep seafloor. In 2004, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the Sanctuary recently described how deep-sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas. The red dots seen in some of the underwater footage are lasers mounted on the remotely operated submersible. The lasers are 29 cm apart and allow the scientists to estimate animal size. The rules of the auction house, moreover, prevented them from searching inside. In Episode 1 we will go over the basic considerations for buying shipping containers, explain how we got building permits for a shipping container house and show how we constructed the concrete foundations. Link to the company i bought my shipping containers from: https://www.containerdiscounts.com/shipping-containers-for-sale-home-made-modern Follow us on instagram for project updates: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/ Shop the Container Home: https://www.homedepot.com/c/openhouse Explore the Container Home: http://www.uncontained.house/ We are still working on getting the website for this project up and running so please be patient. Buying the Shipping Containers: We purchased one trip condition hi-cube containers. California requires that shipping containers used for homes have documentation showing that have not had toxic or radioactive materials in them. This normally means that you need one trip condition containers with appropriate certificates. I bought my containers from https://www.containerdiscounts.com/shipping-containers-for-sale-home-made-modern and paid $4800 each for the 40-foot hi-cube containers and $3250 for the 20-foot hi-cube container. Hi-cube containers are a foot taller than typical shipping containers. Permits: I recommend going in person to the local building department showing them the survey and asking them for a checklist of everything that needs to be completed to get building permits. The survey is important because it shows the building dept both the physical nature of the property and documents its legal boundaries and history. I explained that I wanted to build a shipping container house and asked for a complete checklist of everything I would need to get done and submit in order to get building permits. Architectural Design I used the architecture firm I co-founded, ZeroEnergy Design, to produce the architectural drawings. Even though I am a co-owner I made sure to pay the firm for the hours of preparation that this task would take. It would be unfair to my partners if I used firm resources for my own personal project. I paid $5000 for the creation of the architectural drawings. Structural Engineering I sent the architectural drawings over to the structural engineering firm I hired, and they created the structural details and created a package of calculations showing that these details would meet all code requirements and result in a safe and strong building. This package of drawings and calculations was required by the building dept. My architecture firm primarily practices on the east coast and does not have a stamp in California so I had the structural engineering firm stamp the drawings. The building dept gave me the option of having either the architecture firm or the engineering firm stamp the documents. Foundation design: We ended up building a monolithic on slab on grade concrete foundation. We worked on designs for some piers that would have saved in material costs but then the space underneath the container would have been classified as a crawl space and the bottom of the container would have to be 18” off the ground at a minimum. This would mean I would have to build stairs and railing for all the decks. Grading the site and excavating for the foundation I rented a bulldozer and hired an operator to level a portion of the site where I wanted to place the house. I then rented a back hoe to dig out the footings for the foundation. Building the forms The forms were built out of 2x8s screwed to steel stakes that we hammered into the ground. Reinforcement We used #4 rebar to reinforce the concrete. This was wired together to match the structural drawings. Concrete Day Concrete day was pretty exciting. We had to pump the concrete to one of the foundation slabs because the truck couldn’t get close enough without driving over the other forms. How-To Connect and Seal 2 Shipping Containers Joined Together to form a House. In this video we are going to show you 3 Simple Steps on How-To Connect and Seal 2 Shipping Containers joined Together to form a House by highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Stay tuned as we explain the step by step process. Placing shipping containers in parallel side by side is pretty common when building with shipping containers. Once the two containers are correctly positioned and placed on their foundation, the next step is to join and seal the containers together. To the contrary, the joinery process is not as straight forward as it may sound, The protruding corner posts on shipping containers prevents a perfect seal when two containers are places side by side. If you intend to execute this task as a DIY project, you will be required to have tools and materials that are essential to get the job done. Here is a look behind the scenes of how ODonnell Furniture Makers made the Contract Hotel Furniture for the Mondrian London at Sea Containers. This project needed a lot of innovation on ODonnell's behalf in order to realise the architects dream of smooth flowing lines and curved details for the nautical themed bedrooms. The Mondrian London is the first ever Mondrian branded boutique hotel outside the United States, the hotel will bring the energy of the original Hollywood hotel to the iconic Sea Containers building. Located on London’s revitalised South Bank, Mondrian London at Sea Containers boasts a wealth of diverse culture on its doorstep, including the Tate Modern, Borough market and the Southbank Centre all within walking distance. With a combination of unique riverside views, two exciting new bars, a restaurant and a bustling urban vibe reflecting the local neighbourhood, Mondrian is set to become London’s new destination.

When arriving at the Mondrian you are met by an enormous blue anchor chain, which symbolizes the history and location of the building. Mondrian is raised on the grounds of the old harbour container docks, which also explains the large curved bronze wall you meet when entering the hotel - a ship's hull. This is a stylish, but very large hotel - more than 360 rooms. The Facts: Container approx $1,200 - Transport $1000 Storage / secure lot - $3,000 (6 months) oxygen and acetylene torches to cut doors windows - $700 Insurance (required)- $500 Materials - reclaimed cost value $3,000 Materials Purchased: $1,800 Labor: Free with Youtube Judgement or Love The cost of making it and having fun while learning? PRICELESS Be offended and enjoy your day.. or Like and subscribe to enjoy more. After my "Maine adventure" I got the idea to build a Shipping Container Cabin. Here is my video summary of things I wish I knew before I built a shipping container house. It was an awesome process and I really enjoyed it, but I learned the hard way there is no money in this as a profitable business model. My next plan is to build a 40ft one somewhere on a mountain in Virginia where I can write my manifesto. Shipping container houses are awesome and I could live in one so this is not the last build for me, but it is not a viable business. Someday maybe, but people are not quite ready yet. ** Language Complaints** Please stop letting words hurt you and realize they have little value and the overall objective is the message. I am sorry, but words are just noises and sounds... we put the value in them based on personal beliefs and not those of a drunk sailor.. I believe no sound should be restricted when not in malice or anger. ***Complaints about not being "Ultra Modern" *** After many comments about it being "not modern enough with new age technology, stainless steel, granite, robots and robot legs that rise and walk on water". I would just like to add that we sold it as a "recreational cabin" and not a "primary home in San Fransisco or New York City". This was marketed as a simple solution for an instant hunting / fishing camp. The price was $5K cheaper than the cheapest Chinese model you see on eBay. We believe that the price for what it is was very affordable for our target buyers. **You are too negative- Complaints** Life is tough and I am sorry that I can not candy coat it and feed it to you on a golden spoon. I am realistic and I retain this quality that many younger generations have lost along the way to being offended. I keep it real ... I want people to follow their dreams but be realistic. You will not be Elon Musk and you will not likely start a tiny house revolution..... or nor will you send Tesla cars in to space on rockets you made with your "play money". If you find value in that cool...... If not, go build a few, make a video, share your personal thoughts, and then message me. I will respect you, but until then... I will view you as a petty comment troll who hates puppies and kittens. You are the type of person who posts hateful comments about loving democracy and freedom. If you post negative comments, the terrorists win. Is that what you want? Is it? Thanks for watching- (I see what you just did there) Thanks for watching and go build a Shipping Container House

Soon after it left the Port of Oakland, California, in February 2004, the shipping vessel Med Taipei hit a strong winter storm with violent 30-foot-high (9 meters) swells. Amid rolling waves, 15 shipping containers came loose and toppled overboard, sinking to the icy seafloor inside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Just four months later, scientists surveying the seafloor with an underwater robot found one of those lost containers nearly 4,200 feet (1,300 m) below the surface. They turned their chance discovery into an opportunity to study how aquatic life reacts to deep-sea pollution. Ninety percent of the world's goods are transported by ship, and inevitably hundreds, maybe thousands, of containers fall overboard each year. Lost containers have caused some strange objects from Legos to hockey gloves to wash ashore on beaches around the globe. The Med Taipei container was transporting 1,159 steel-belted car tires. But not all containers hold such innocuous goods. Some carry batteries, pesticides and industrial chemicals that could be toxic to marine life. The boxes themselves might even be made of hazardous materials. [Photos: Trash Litters Deep Seafloor] Researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) deployed a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to collect video footage and seafloor samples from the sunken container site in March 2011.

Real estate broker Jeff White dreamed of transforming used shipping containers into affordable housing. Laughed at by the first architects he approached, he began to work on his concept using a 40-foot-long, 9-foot-6-inches-tall and 8-foot-wide container in the driveway of his Salt Lake City (Utah) home. Being "busted" by a city inspector became the needed publicity for his project and soon after the Salt Lake's mayor was behind him and helped to ease the permits and inspections process. After two years of transformation (including plans, groundwork and permits), what began as two forty-foot high cube containers is now a light and airy 672-square-foot house. It's not dirt cheap- the Sarah House (named for a San Francisco homeless woman whose makeshift home inspired White) is currently on the market for $135,000 (and only to low-income buyers)-, but that price includes a lot of hidden costs. "I spent 40 thousand dollars for the lot and then the infrastructure underneath it, getting the sewer, water lines, probably an additional 25 thousand dollars. So you can see where I'm at, the house is still coming in at 55 to 60 thousand dollars." White thinks with time and economies of scale, he can bring the costs down. Full tour of a DIY micro cabin built inside of a used shipping container. We spent a night sleeping in this tiny house at the Repère Boréal eco resort in Quebec, Canada. You can check out their incredible cabins here: https://www.repereboreal.com/?lang=en To see more shipping container videos, check our out playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslKBpzJILetNxYydLx7v2y1xdSCU-hkK The shipping container was originally a 53' long shipping container that they purchased used (it used to be a Canadian Tire container, one of our favourite stores!) and they cut it in half to create two identical cabins. They insulated the container with foam boards, they heat it with an electric baseboard, and they have a Sun-Mar composting toilet. The Repère Boréal eco resort is a gorgeous space created by two brothers, Simon and Jonathan. Their father had originally bought the land to start a campground but he passed away before the project could begin. The two brothers decided to build on his dream and have created several inspiring tiny cabin designs. They also have an outdoor spa area with hot tubs, a sauna, and a cold shower. It's pretty spectacular (speaking from firsthand experience!). We think it's so important to show that tiny spaces can still be functional, liveable, and beautiful all at the same time. Bigger isn't always better and we'd love to see more diversity in the sizes of homes that are being built to accommodate for a whole range of preferences. For the time being, a lot of the more interesting small spaces being created are at eco-resorts because they have a little bit more freedom with the building code since they're not meant for full-time use. Be sure to check out Repère Boréal if you're in Quebec! https://www.repereboreal.com/?lang=en Thanks for watching! Install UX or EX Panels in a stacked pattern We recommend installing panels with the embedded studs running perpendicular to a shipping containers corrugated rib. The goal is to provide as much contact between the studs and steel in order to maximize the holding power of the studs. Add a bead of PL Premium 3x along the side of the corner of the container where the first row of panels are placed. On the back of the panel, run a 3/8″ bead of adhesive along dove-tailed ribbing of each stud. Install the wall panels before the ceiling panels. This allows the ceiling panels to sit on top of the wall panels around the perimeter. The running bond pattern in not required on the ceiling. Brace firmly until all adhesives has cured. The ceiling panels can be shimmed into place along the edges on top of the wall panels by using 1x material or scrap foam. Before shimming, make sure that the side wall panel’s adhesive is set. Remove the shims, if used, and seal the area between the ceiling and wall panels with spray foam.

Architect, artist, designer Julio Garcia had been designing plans for shipping container homes for a decade before he found the perfect place to build one: on a long, narrow stretch of his property in Savannah, Georgia. “I’m a big believer we should be adapting to the environment… I remember walking out and looking at the yard and thinking oh my god the land is calling for this linear design.” He picked up two 40 foot shipping containers from the Port of Savannah and, thanks to much advance planning, he was able to install them without removing one tree from his property. He offset the two boxes, cut out the interior container walls and added I-beams, a shed roof and clerestory windows in the center to provide plenty of daylighting. “There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re inside a container so in the design we had to address that. I’ve been in a couple of projects and they don’t function very well and you’re like, ‘Oh, I still feel like I’m in a metal box’.” Garcia believes containers can make for affordable homes: “you could put up a structure like this for about 50K”, but much of the interior was salvaged from other job sites (i.e. the drywall and the kitchen). His Price Street Projects creates plans that are “almost do-it-yourself plans” for shipping container homes and he has installed commercial container spaces, but he’s a big believer that the site should determine the design. http://pricestreetprojects.com/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/artist-builds-his-savannah-studio-with-shipping-containers

Dutch and German authorities are warning prospective treasure hunters to stay away from 270 shipping containers lost at sea by a cargo ship as some are carrying hazardous materials. The Panama-registered MSC Zoe shed the containers, containing mostly toys, IKEA furniture and car parts while battling a storm off the Wadden Islands, an archipelago off the northwestern Dutch coast. Despite warnings, locals on the Wadden islands have been seen recovering toys and goods - including flat-screen TVs (inset top right) - from broken containers which have turned up on their shores. During a transit from San Francisco Bay to the Port of Los Angeles on 26 February 2004, the cargo ship M/V Med Taipei weathered a storm but lost fifteen 40-ft shipping containers in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), and another nine south of the sanctuary. One of these containers was discovered by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) on June 9, 2004 at a depth of 1,281 meters, 17.5 nm NW of Point Pinos (near Monterey, CA). This was not an isolated incident. Containerized maritime trade grew eight-fold from 1985 to 2007, and worldwide there are now approximately 5 to 6 million containers in transit at any given moment. An estimated 10,000 shipping containers are lost at sea every year, often due to the nexus of rough seas and inadequate or faulty securing mechanisms. Many containers are not weighed prior to loading, resulting in extreme forces being placed on container stacks when bad weather strikes. Depending on the cargo, containers may float at the surface for several days or weeks prior to sinking. Unfortunately, it is not mandatory to report container losses to all relevant management agencies. From March 8-11, 2011, a science team led by Dr. Andrew DeVogelaere (MBNMS) and Dr. James Barry (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, MBARI) conducted a research expedition aboard MBARI's R/V Western Flyer. The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts was deployed to address the following goals: • Assess the container's current condition by gathering high-resolution imagery • Describe sea life on the container and at different distances from it • Bring public attention to this deep-sea phenomenon that has been increasing with economic globalization and increased shipping For more information, please visit http://sanctuarysimon.org/projects/project_info.php?projectID=100388
