These days, it’s desperately hard to get anybody’s attention. The average consumer encounters 3,000 commercial messages a day and most of them get ignored. In “Building a StoryBrand” Donald Miller introduces us to a powerful framework that has been getting and keeping people’s attention for thousands of years. If you want to get attention for your products, services or for yourself, the author teaches you how by using a powerful story formula. --The Power of a StoryBrand-- Here’s an example: Kyle Shultz was a photographer, who created a course to teach parents how to take better photos of their kids. He launched with $28,000 in sales. His message was “the power of photography in the hands of parents”. After working through the StoryBrand framework, his messaging evolved to “we help parents take better pics” and the copy on his website went from 1,000 words down to less than 200 words. Instead of telling a confusing story, Kyle invited customers into a story. The result? His second launch – to the same email list – produced $103,000 in sales! --Key Insight-- Don’t think for a second this book is about learning to tell your story. In fact, the author argues that telling your story is a great way to go bankrupt! Instead, try inviting customers into a story. Companies need to understand that the Brand is NOT the hero. The CUSTOMER is the hero. That’s the only way to engage them. And the Brand’s role is to guide the hero successfully through their challenges. You want your Brand to be the Yoda to Luke Skywalker, your customer. --The Big Idea-- So how do you accomplish this? How do you invite a customer into a story? EVERY memorable story is built on a simple framework: A hero has a problem, meets a guide who gives them a plan, and calls them to action. Failure would be devastating, but the guide navigates the hero to success! Take any blockbuster move and you’ll see this framework applies. --Key Lessons-- Most companies waste enormous amounts of money trying to tell their story. The truth is nobody cares. But every human being wants to be invited into a story. They want you to offer them a vision of a better life, help them overcome challenges, act as their guide and take them to a climactic scene in which their story ends happily. --Conclusion-- Start by going to your home page: are you making the story about you or the customer? As you’re reading the book, takes notes along the way, brainstorm and craft a clearer message for your brand, and then update all your communications. Dorie is recognized as a “branding expert” by the Associated Press. She is the author of Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out, and she is also an Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, a former presidential campaign spokeswoman and a frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Following is an excerpt from our interview. Marshall: Dorie, you are a world’s authority at helping people get their message across in a very crowded marketplace. One thing that's very important to me is the idea of personal brand. And, you know a lot about that! In just a couple minutes can you share some of your insights to our listeners on what they can do to build their own professional and personal brand? Dorie: Absolutely, Marshall. As we get into an increasingly globalized economy, it becomes much easier for companies to find someone who's willing to do things more cheaply perhaps around the world, so the only defense against that for an individual or for a company for that matter, is to become known as being an expert in what they do. People are willing to pay more because they are going to you specifically because you are the expert. I wrote about this in my book, Reinventing You. And, it’s a three-step process to personal branding. 1) The first step is getting clear on what your current brand is. When thinking of brand, a lot of people immediately ask themselves, “How do I create a brand?” But the truth is, you already have one. So, it's getting a sense of what that brand is by canvassing your friends and colleagues and really understanding how you are perceived in the marketplace. 2) The second step is to come up with a future vision for your brand. Where do you want to go and what skills or capabilities do you need to develop to get there? And then create an action plan towards that goal. 3) The final step is what I call living out your brand. Oftentimes the discourse around reinvention, around personal branding, is this “one-and-done” phenomenon. But that’s not enough. We have to live our brands day-to-day, on a consistent basis, send that message in all the small steps we take along the way. This way you really get the message across in a way that lasts with other people. Marshall: This is great! You know, I wrote a book with Sally Helgesen called How Women Rise. In our book, Sally came up with some really good thoughts. For instance, with women specifically sometimes they have more of a challenge with self-promotion, with promoting their own brand. Do you have any specific thoughts on how to get over that kind of phobia towards self-promotion? Dorie: Absolutely, and I think you're exactly right. I know so many talented women, who have no problem talking up their friends, colleagues, or companies, but when it comes to themselves, it's a challenge. One thing that I like to suggest, which I wrote about in a Harvard Business Review article, is to avoid adjectives and to think about nouns. For instance, rather than introducing themselves with adjectives, like “I’m the best expert in personal branding,” or “I’m the leading attorney in New York City,” both of which are of course subjective adjectives and could potentially be perceived as bragging, try sticking to nouns. Stick to things that you have objectively accomplished, whether it’s winning a particular award or a particular role you are in. For instance, “I am the SVP of Finance at XXX company.” Or, “I am the President of IP of the local Bar Association.” These things convey expertise. They show implicitly that you have the credentials and that you are relating facts, not just putting a self-promotional gloss on yourself. Marshall: I love it! Thank you! https://dorieclark.com/

Find Your Niche: The first thing you must do when creating a personal brand is to find your niche. With personal branding, your niche is who you are and who you market to. To find your niche you must ask yourself two crucial questions: What industry do you want to begin to dominate? What market are you working to capture? Once you’ve established your niche, you’ll be able to streamline your personal brand. You’ll be able to figure out who you can best serve and begin providing them with useful content. 2. Be Authentic: A personal brand should be an authentic brand. Let your audience know what it is about you that makes you qualified to be promoting your brand. Be honest about your failures and setbacks and share the different experiences you’ve had that have led you to promote your brand. When you’re vulnerable with your fans, followers, and clients about who you are and bring your true self into your brand, people will be much more likely to respond. 3. Be Visual: To further cultivate your visual brand presence, you should work to create a logo for your brand. Most people aren’t naturally graphic designers, but when creating your logo it pays to invest in one. They will help you come up with a visually appealing logo to best represent you that you can use for years to come. If you don’t know where to start when looking for graphic designers, try starting with Fiverr. 4. Start Taking Videos: Studies have shown that videos are far more engaging than written content. People are more likely to pay attention to your video content where it could have been easier for them to gloss over a blog post. Videos are also much more personal because tell a story. They take you from behind the keyboard and put you directly in front of your fans, followers, and clients. If you see an engaging video of someone do you find yourself wanting to learn more? We did a video on TheFigCo on the importance of video. 5. Collect Emails: Emails are an affordable marketing option that also give you the chance to segment your market and tailor your message to your desired customers. A frequent email or newsletter gives you the opportunity to speak directly to you customers and builds loyalty and trust. Social media networks can become irrelevant seemingly overnight and you have to constantly strategize to find the most useful platform. Contrastingly, emails have been around since 1971 and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Additionally, social media algorithms are constantly changing and hard to predict. With emails, your message is almost guaranteed to appear in your audiences inbox where they can save your information and easily return to it.   6. Focus Your time is valuable and when building your personal brand, it’s important to choose where you are going to spend your efforts. Chances are, you have yet to give up your full-time job to develop your personal brand, and if that’s the case, you’ll most likely be working late nights and weekends on your new side hustle. To best manage your time you should attempt to choose the three top channels where you think you'd best be able to reach your desired audience. Find the platforms that works to your advantage and devote your time to these platforms. It’s better to give a big concentrated effort to these three platforms than give minimal effort in an attempt to reach everyone everywhere all the time. 7. Be consistent: Creating a consistent schedule for your blog updates, social media posts, YouTube videos and newsletters is key if you hope to engage your audience and grow your following or customer base. Additionally, platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest reward their active and consistent users. If your personal brand is growing at a pace that’s a bit hard to keep up with and you’re constantly producing new content, tools like Hootsuite and Sprout Social can be extremely beneficial when working to schedule your content.
