The Caspian: Sea or Lake?
There's some confusion around the Caspian Sea, namely, is it actually a sea? Don't we usually call fully enclosed bodies of water, lakes? Hopefully this clears things up a little. Music provided by StoneOcean: https://soundcloud.com/stone_ocean

We took a ferry across the Caspian Sea ( Baku - Aktau)
On our last day in Baku, we got interviewed by an Azerbaijani TV crew. We would be on TV again! After the interview it was time for us to go to the port of Alat where we would take a cargo ship that would bring us to Kazakhstan. We were hoping that the ship would leave soon but we ended up waiting for three days at the port and even had to camp during a big sandstorm! We finally left Azerbaijan on the fourth day. Crossing the Caspian Sea by boat was a fantastic experience! It took 28 hours to reach Aktau, the port in Kazakhstan but it didn't feel so long as we shared a great time with fellow travelers, who each had their own unique story and journey! A guide on how to take this ferry: https://www.journalofnomads.com/crossing-the-caspian-sea-by-boat-azerbaijan-kazakhstan/ Find out what we're up to: https://www.facebook.com/journalofnomadsaworldodyssey/ https://www.journalofnomads.com https://instagram.com/journalofnomads/ Make sure you subscribe for WEEKLY VIDs Big thanks for the music by: the sound knitter-MPD 145-4 (sounds of the past) Andrew Applepie-sundeck AK-lovestory All filmed on a canon 700D,canon g7X mark 2,gopro Hero 5 session and gopro hero

Caspian Sea nations sign deal to end dispute | Money Talks
The leaders of the five countries that surround the Caspian Sea have reached a deal on how to carve-up the resource-rich body of water; ending a dispute that's been bubbling away since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The deal signed in Kazakhstan, clarifies ownership of oil and gas reserves and will hopefully ease regional tensions. Liz Maddock has the details. For more, we speak to Oktay Tanrisever, professor at the Middle East Technical University and expert on the Caspian Sea region. The Caspian Sea Deal and Dispute Explained
Since the Soviet Union fell in 1991, the Caspian Sea has been subject to a dispute between the countries that border the water. At the heart of the issue is whether the Caspian is a sea or a lake. However recently in 2018 progress has been made to come to an agreement over how the Caspian should be shared. Abbasid & Vikings (Viking Raid to Caspian Sea)
Abbasid Caliphate The Abbasid Caliphate ( Arabic: ٱلْخِلافَةُ ٱلْعَبَّاسِيَّة‎, al-Khilāfatu al-ʿAbbāsiyyah) was the third of the Islamic caliphates to succeed the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It was founded by a dynasty descended from Muhammad's uncle, Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib (566–653 CE), from whom the dynasty takes its name. They ruled as caliphs for most of the caliphate from their capital in Baghdad in modern-day Iraq and spread their influence in Caucasus, Southern Russia & Ukraine and Central Asia. Kievan Rus Kievan Rus' (Old East Slavic: Рѹ́сь (Rus' ), Arabic : رُوس‎ (rūs), Greek: Ῥῶς (Rhôs), Latin: Rus(s)ia, Ruscia, Ruzzia, Rut(h)enia) was a loose federation of East Slavic and Scandinavian peoples in Europe from the late 9th to the mid-13th century, under the reign of the Scandinavian/Varangian Rurik dynasty. Al-Mas‘udi Abu al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Masʿūdī; (c. 896–956) was a historian, geographer and traveler in the Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mas‘udi was one of the first to combine history and scientific geography in a large-scale work, The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems (مروج الذهب و معادن الجوهر‎), a world history. His account of the Rūs is an important early source for the study of Russian history and the history of Ukraine. Al-Mas‘udi presented most of his material based on his personal observations and contacts made while traveling to the land of the Rūs. Ahmad ibn Fadlan Aḥmad ibn Faḍlān ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn Rāšid ibn Ḥammād, (921–22 CE) was an Arab traveler, famous for his account of his travels as a member of an embassy of the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad to the king of the Volga Bulgars, known as his Risala ("account" or "journal").His account is most notable for providing a detailed description of the Volga Vikings (rūs), including an eyewitness account of a ship burial. Will the Caspian Sea deal hold? | Inside Story
Some call it a sea, others a lake. For decades its status has been questioned. Five countries - Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan - now agree the Caspian Sea, as it is commonly known, has "special status." They all have coastlines on the water, and disputed who owned the area of water. And a deal’s now been done…to share the surface and divide up the seabed. The new agreement will open the way for oil and gas exploration...if it holds. And it could lead to a new global energy and political alliance? Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom Guests: Stanislav Pritchin, analyst at the Russia and Eurasia programme at Chatham House. Foad Izadi, professor of world studies at the University of Tehran. The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) located between Europe and Asia. What happened to the Ekranoplan? - The Caspian Sea Monster
What happened to the Ekranoplan, the huge ground effect vehicle the Soviets developed in the cold from the 1960's to the 1980's. This was a part plane, part boat that could fly just above the above the sea surface and carry huge loads of personnel or weapons at high speed. We look at its development, its inventor and its ultimate demise. Pateron : https://www.patreon.com/curiousdroid Sponsors : Luke, Muhammad Tauha Ali, Pascal Hausammann, Florian Hesse. Atlantis of the Caspian Sea
Mysterious, shrouded in legends and tales Sabayil castle is of particular interest because it is located directly under the water, 350 meters from the shore, and often for this reason is called the Atlantis of the Caspian Sea. It was constructed on a rocky island in the Baylovskoy Bay by Shirvanshah Fariburz III, in 1235. In 1306, the fortress went into the water because of the strong earthquake in the south of the Caspian Sea and the dramatic rise of the sea level. It was only in the early 18th century, when the Caspian Sea retreated, that the island resurfaced. The mystery of Bayil castle has intrigued the scientists, travellers, researchers and archaeologists who have visited Baku over the centuries. The largest had max take-off weight over 544 tonnes. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union smaller ekranoplans for non-military use have been under development. The CHDB had already developed the eight-seat Volga-2 in 1985, and Technologies and Transport developed a smaller version by the name of Amphistar.

Worlds MOST POWERFUL Military Naval Fleet in Caspian Sea
A navy or maritime force is a fleet of waterborne military vessels (watercraft) and its associated naval aviation, both sea-based and land-based. It is the branch of a nation's armed forces principally designated for naval and amphibious warfare; namely, lake-borne, riverine, littoral, or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. It includes anything conducted by surface ships, amphibious ships, submarines, and seaborne aviation, as well as ancillary support, communications, training, and other fields; recent developments have included space-related operations. The strategic offensive role of a navy is projection of force into areas beyond a country's shores (for example, to protect sea-lanes, ferry troops, or attack other navies, ports, or shore installations). The strategic defensive purpose of a navy is to frustrate seaborne projection-of-force by enemies. The strategic task of the navy also may incorporate nuclear deterrence by use of Submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Naval operations can be broadly divided between riverine and littoral applications (brown-water navy), open-ocean applications (blue-water navy), and something in between (green-water navy), although these distinctions are more about strategic scope than tactical or operational division. In most nations, the term "naval", as opposed to "navy", is interpreted as encompassing all maritime military forces, e.g., navy, marine / marine corps, and coast guard forces. Etymology and meanings[edit] First attested in English in the early 14th century,[1] the word "navy" came via Old French navie, "fleet of ships", from the Latin navigium, "a vessel, a ship, bark, boat",[2] from navis, "ship".[3] The word "naval" came from Latin navalis, "pertaining to ship";[4] cf. Greek ναῦς (naus), "ship",[5] ναύτης (nautes), "seaman, sailor".[6] The earliest attested form of the word is in the Mycenaean Greek compound word 𐀙𐀄𐀈𐀗, na-u-do-mo (*naudomoi), "shipbuilders", written in Linear B syllabic script.[n 1] The word formerly denoted fleets of both commercial and military nature. In modern usage "navy" used alone always denotes a military fleet, although the term "merchant navy" for a commercial fleet still incorporates the non-military word sense. This overlap in word senses between commercial and military fleets grew out of the inherently dual-use nature of fleets; centuries ago, nationality was a trait that unified a fleet across both civilian and military uses. Although nationality of commercial vessels has little importance in peacetime trade other than for tax avoidance, it can have greater meaning during wartime, when supply chains become matters of patriotic attack and defense, and when in some cases private vessels are even temporarily converted to military vessels. The latter was especially important, and common, before 20th-century military technology existed, when merely adding artillery and naval infantry to any sailing vessel could render it fully as martial as any military-owned vessel. Such privateering has been rendered obsolete in blue-water strategy since modern missile and aircraft systems grew to leapfrog over artillery and infantry in many respects; but privateering nevertheless remains potentially relevant in littoral warfare of a limited and asymmetric nature. History Naval warfare developed when humans first fought from water-borne vessels. Prior to the introduction of the cannon and ships with sufficient capacity to carry the large guns, navy warfare primarily involved ramming and boarding actions. In the time of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, naval warfare centered on long, narrow vessels powered by banks of oarsmen (such as triremes and quinqueremes) designed to ram and sink enemy vessels or come alongside the enemy vessel so its occupants could be attacked hand-to-hand. Naval warfare continued in this vein through the Middle Ages until the cannon became commonplace and capable of being reloaded quickly enough to be reused in the same battle. The Chola Dynasty of medieval India was known as one of the greatest naval powers of its time from 300 BC to 1279 AD. The Chola Navy, Chola kadarpadai comprised the naval forces of the Chola Empire along with several other Naval-arms of the country. The Chola navy played a vital role in the expansion of the Chola Tamil kingdom, including the conquest of the Sri Lanka islands, Kadaaram (Present day Burma), Sri Vijaya (present day Southeast Asia), the spread of Hinduism, Tamil architecture and Tamil culture to Southeast Asia and in curbing the piracy in Southeast Asia in 900 CE. In ancient China, large naval battles were known since the Qin Dynasty (also see Battle of Red Cliffs, 208), employing the war junk during the Han Dynasty. However, China's first official standing navy was not established until the Southern Song dynasty in the 12th century, a time when gunpowder was a revolutionary new application to warfare. he mass and deck space required

Drone captures eerie Soviet weapons testing site in Caspian Sea *EXCLUSIVE*
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe The Soviet 'Dagdiesel' plant has stood abandoned and alone in the Caspian Sea since 1966 when tests on torpedoes and other naval weapons at the facility ceased. The fortress was commissioned in 1939 and had all the mod cons for the period, including comfortable quarters, parquet floors, a hotel, a library and even a basketball court. Standing on a reinforced concrete foundation 2.7 kilometres (1.67 miles) off the coast, the fortress covers an area of 5,200 square metres. In a feat of engineering, the underwater section, also known as the "Array," was built by the coast and floated to the construction site before being sunk. Thanks to its solid construction, the facility is still standing strong today and is a hotspot for thrill seekers looking for an adventure back in time. Caspian Sea Beach of Iran.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. It is in an endorheic basin (a basin without outflows) located between Europe and Asia. It is bounded by Kazakhstan to the northeast, Russia to the northwest, Azerbaijan to the west, Iran to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southeast. The Caspian Sea presently lies about 28 m (92 ft) below sea level in the Caspian Depression, to the east of the Caucasus Mountains and to the west of the vast steppe of Central Asia. The sea bed in the southern part reaches as low as 1023 m below sea level, which is the second lowest natural depression on earth after Lake Baikal (-1180 m). The ancient inhabitants of its coast perceived the Caspian Sea as an ocean, probably because of its saltiness and large size. The sea has a surface area of 371,000 km2 (143,200 sq mi) and a volume of 78,200 km3 (18,800 cu mi). It has a salinity of approximately 1.2% (12 g/l), about a third of the salinity of most seawater.
Caspian Sea Monster ~ Shine On
Caspian Sea Monster is a german four-piece from the city of Chemnitz, former Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 2012, Toni Niemeier and Andre Dettmann of Playfellow teamed up with Tom Müller of Calaveras in order to explore new sounds and ideas, mixing indie-rock with post-rock elements. Shortly after, the group was completed by Marc Ebert (guitar). Finally, in May 2017 - after five years of live shows, song-writing, recording and yet some more recording - the debut album was finished and released via Stargazer Records. Catching the Caspian Sea Ferry | Cycling Central Asia: Day 53
Riding a 34 year old ship through the Caspian Sea was one of the biggest highlights of my trip. It was a pretty surreal experience as both your sense of time and space seem to diminish while being completely disconnected on this ancient rig with other equally confused passengers. This ferry is notoriously difficult to catch, but I happened to have quite an easy time organizing the venture. Just buy your ticket online, and call the office every day to see if a boat will be leaving. I had a nice tailwind for the 60km ride down to the port from Baku as well.
