“Hope Shines Eternal” (Instrumental with Backing Vocals) from the movie "My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Legend of Everfree“ based on the television show "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic."
(DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW).
“Legend of Everfree” was quite a different movie from the previous Equestria Girls offerings in many ways. It took place outside the school, and felt somewhat more subdued, especially when compared to Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games. Not that it didn’t have its big moments, but compared to the previous movies, it was much more character-focused and dialogue-heavy.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise then that much of the music was also drastically different than the previous three movies. Daniel Ingram and crew went with much less pop and electronic songs, which took up most of the previous soundtracks, and focused more on acoustic and folk. The latter is something that we haven’t really heard from the series before, and as always it’s great to hear it delve into new musical genres. The soundtrack features two acoustic folk songs with the movie’s title and credits numbers, an emotional piano ballad for Twilight, and a more contemporary acousti-pop song from Sunset. Gaea Everfree (aka Gloriosa Daisy) receives a big, bombastic villain song, which sounds like a musical version of the “Imperial March.” And finally, the movie concludes with one electronic dance number in “Legend You Are Meant to Be” where Daniel really busts out his talent of writing catchy hooks.
Overall, the songs of “Legend of Everfree” are varied both within themselves, and also from the rest of the Equestria Girls series. The focus on folk and acoustic numbers fits both the story’s setting and change in tone, and while the album might not sport as many songs as Friendship Games, the amount of songs in the movie itself matches that of both it and the first movie: six.
--Track Specific Comments--
“Hope Shines Eternal” is fighting hard to become my favorite song from the movie against “Legend You Were Meant to Be’s” ridiculously catchy hook. It’s so much different than most of the other songs from Equestria Girls. It combines the folk stylings of the “Legend of Everfree” opening song, and gospel inspirations of Rainbow Rocks’ closing number “Shine Like Rainbows” (another one of my favorites!). With this being a credits song, it gives a lot more freedom to Ingram and the singers, since the voices don’t have to be matched with actions and characters on screen. This allows a ton of wonderful backing vocals and callbacks from each of the characters throughout the song. Seriously go back and take a listen to just the backing vocal parts which appear exclusively in the left or right channels—there’s so many good parts there, and each character receives some! Call me biased (and I probably am), but Ashleigh Ball’s Applejack backing vocals are the best.
This song really exudes such happiness and optimism, and really puts a smile on my face to listen to. The instrumentation is some of my favorite from “Legend of Everfree,” mixing strings, acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, and plucked bass (and perhaps more) beautifully.
Great work as well to Trevor Hoffmann for a superb vocal arrangement again for the Humane 6’s harmonies here. Just wonderful, especially during the chorus—definitely my favorite part.
