Fashion Illustration Masters: Gruau, Lagerfeld & Downton

07:18
Rene Gruau, Karl Lagerfeld and David Downton are masters in their field. Their drawings are a particular form of art that represents glamour and beauty. Gruau, arguably the grandmaster of Fashion illustration, part French, part Italian renounced his aristocratic and privileged position (his father being an Italian Count) and chose the artistic life in Paris. His drawings undoubtedly reflect some of that high society feel. Lagerfeld, Downton and others have followed in his footsteps making the illustration an art form. This medium is very distinctive - neither sketching or painting - with the minimum of strokes to create the mood. Some may question is it art? To me there is no question - it has pride of place on any wall and will I believe be a unique record of a particular style of art from the late 20th, early 21st century. The background music is by Les Hommes, tracks "In Spring" and "Vista Do Mar". The movie excerpts are from Lagerfeld Confidential (2007), a very amusing look into the life and style of Karl Lagerfeld, and Vanity Fair clip on David Downton sketching Daphne Guinness, Sofia Coppola, Caroline Herrera and Iman for their September Issue. The Three Graces - Elegance, Beauty and Style. My Philosophy for a sublime way of living. My aim - to bring a touch of old world grace and discreet glamour to the everyday. "Having class - it's not half the battle - it's the whole war" Also on Tumblr : http://bellisvintage.tumblr.com/archive http://bellisvintagemono.tumblr.com/archive "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. What Supplies Will You Need? | Fashion Sketching

Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501964-What-Supplies-Will-You-Need-Fashion-Sketching Learn what supplies you'll need for fashion design drawing from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. Supplies for fashion design. There are so many supplies out there that you could choose from. The best way to go about it is to systematically try different things. You need your mechanical pencils. They're very important. Different level leads, as far as hardness is concerned. You need to have a beautiful pen that you feel really comfortable drawing with. From there you could start to explore how you're going to color in your fashion illustrations. Whether you want to use pastels. Whether you want to use watercolor, gouache. Whether you want to use colored pencils. I can go, there's many other mediums out there. But, what's most important is to find a medium that you're most comfortable with. And to work with it to the best of your ability. There's all sorts of other tools that you're gonna need. You're gonna need a good smudger, good smudging stick. It's how you create all your shading. You're going to need a great eraser. Because, lord knows, you're gonna make mistakes. And that doesn't matter, you can just erase it. White out is a great tool for finishing sketches. There's all sorts of things. Just really have fun with it and really get comfortable with using your tools. So play around. Experiment. Play around with different kinds of paper. There's marker paper. There's all sorts of vellums. Etcetera, etcetera. You could even use cheap, printer paper if you want. That's a great thing to just practice on. So those are pretty much all the supplies you need to create a fashion portfolio.

Kristine has been drawing since she was a kid, which brought her to study fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her charming creations bring fashion vignettes to life with beautifully exaggerated extremities adorned with vibrant colors—and not to mention bring absolute delight to our Insta feeds! Kristine started to share her whimsical sketches on social media about a year ago, and to no surprise, people started to fall in love with them. “The most exciting thing has been the interaction with designers through Instagram,” Kristine says. “These are the talented people I'm often inspired by and the fact that they take the time to even acknowledge or comment is a little bit surreal and makes them all the more impressive.” We love her ability to transform anyone into a stylish sketch you imagine lingering on the drawing tables of any major fashion house. Her advice to burgeoning artists? Do what you love and keep creating the feel good fashion illustrator.

Tips to draw better a fashion sketch in 4 minutes

05:00
The tutorial for today: Tips to draw better a fashion sketch in 4 minutes. We start with the construction axes. Don't over draw them. Just a simple sketch will do.This simple axes will help you and they will be a small guidance for your future costume.Remember that if the shoulder axis goes up, the hip line will balance the figue and it will be sketched in the oposite direction.Use soft lines and the use strong strokes that will create your costume. This is an exercise about composition, accents, balancing the lines in a fashion costume, it is an exercise that will help you be more creative, very fast, As a tip: use a music playlist and depending on the music, you can accelerate your lines, after the beat. There is no use in drawing the details, all you have to do is to have an expressive line, very modulated. For the second fashion sketch start, as previously, with the axes. Then add lines, dots and surfaces to your costume, to make in even more creative and interesting to be watched. A drawing is perfect when you have multiple line sizes - and these you can obtain when you press softer or harder, when you can add pression to your pencils and control the lines. Another tip is to keep your eyes half closed to see where you need to put the accents in a fashion sketch. If the sketch has almost the same "color" let's say, it is time to have areas where the line is stronger or softer, where you have empty spaces or black surfaces. These areas are those where the eye of the viewer stops and reflects, where the eye takes a break. When drawing more figures on a single paper sheet, try to think of all of them as a unit, as a whole. Each fashion sketch can be treated as an individual composition, but also the full paper should be in harmony, having the perfect composition. See those black areas that I underline sometimeS? Those are the equilibrium of each composition and they help you create a rythm to your drawings. At then end, take a look at all my drawings on this page and try to understand which technique I applied and why. The first model is feminine and it has a curved soft line. The scond one has the accents put on the upper side, having big volumes in the shape of a pair of earrings and jewelry for the neck. The third one is more elastic, nervous and it has a bigger volume the the preivous sketches. Here the contrast between the soft lines and those with accents is bigger. The costume is composed by 3 areas that are round: the two volumes on the shoulders and the lower part- the skirt. The last one has a more masculine approach. The lines are bold, strong and they tend to have angles. They are more rigid and they look geometric somehow. The last figure is the accent of this composition. The line is crazy and unexpected, compared to the previous strokes. Try to do this exercise at home, by copying my sketches and then by inventing new ones. Good luck!

Digital Fashion Illustration - Part 1: Outline - tracing a model (plus size)

12:28
In this video I show you how I start off a fashion illustration digitally (using my laptop). I am using a Sony Vaio Flip which is a Tablet PC (touch screen) and am using a stylus which can draw directly on to my screen. You don't need these products to make digital fashion illustrations. You could also trace a model using the brush tool in photoshop or the pen tool in Illustrator. (I have done both in the past) Just to clarify, I CAN draw models/croquis myself, sometimes I just want a more perfect and realistic look which is when I will use a photograph as a base such as this. It also makes it a lot quicker and easier and gives great results even for people who don't think they can draw very well. A little bit about me: I am currently studying the Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design in Melbourne, Australia. I finished the Diploma in Fashion Design and Technology in 2014. I hope to own my own plus size alternative clothing label in the future. Music by Bensound http://www.bensound.com/

How to draw faces in fashion illustration

05:56
This tutorial is for golden diys, alexisaspoon, Memo Chanel, Vandyan Ha, jasmine smith, Doc Hiluluk, Tania Kaur and many more who wanted to learn how to actually draw a fashion portrait. And here is the process when drawing the face, in fashion illustration. We start with the round of the face. Then we add the nose in a triangle shape. After that, we continue with the lips. Make sure to leave the bottom part of the lips in white because usually that is the lighted part of the lips. Then go to the eyes. The size of an eye is the same as the distance between the eyes. Use soft lines and then add more contrast when you are sure you did the right thing for the eyes. The upper part is darker and the lower part - you can leave it in soft gray. There is no use to add so much contrast here. Use parallel lines to shade the part under the eyebrows - where the shadow is. Add shadow under the nose and chin and on the sides. Then use creative, expressive lines to make the hair. It is not necessary to have a real haircut, because, as you can see, you can play even more with the lines to create a spectacular haircut. Then do the earrings and the neck - use lines that suggest a lacy costume. Then go to the chest and will it with expressive lines as you can see in my drawing. Use 8B pencils for more contrast and put some accents where do you need them. Add details if you want and then let's do another drawing. This time we can be even more creative. Start like you already know with the oval of the face. Then suggest the right eye and then the left one. Add the shadow in parallel lines. After that, think of a crazy shape for the earrings. They are not necessary symmetric, so that you can think of any shapes. This time, I choose a non symmetrical hat and I accentuated some lines or the background in order to make it more evident in the page. As about the costume, I played with curves to exaggerate the volume. Use your imagination and helped by our creative tools: the lines, the dots and the surfaces, create a costume as you wish.

11 Tips & Techniques | Fashion Sketching

04:04
Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501932-11-Tips-and-Techniques-Fashion-Sketching Learn eleven fashion sketching tips and techniques from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. All right, here are some tricks of the trade, shortcuts, call them whatever you want but they're really going to help you out in fashion design. First thing is always have a good croquis that you've developed, okay? That's what's going to make everything easier when you're sketching your clothes. I'm just going to sketch and talk through this but, one thing is, you never want to start with pen, unless you're really confident. You always want a good mechanical pencil. You start your sketch in pencil; you know you can just always go in and erase the pencil. I'm going to do like a gown with a train here. I have my little croquis underneath so that's helping me out, making it go real fast. And another thing that you want to always have on hand, because even if after you've inked in your sketch, is whiteout. Whiteout is a great thing. It will never show up on a scan when you finally scan the finished product into your computer, because you can then print it out and have a gorgeous, clean version; that's another trick. So do your sketch, you scan it in, you lose all the whiteout and whatever else you've done to it; even if you've done patchwork or what have you, you'll never know. Photoshop is a good trick for coloring things in, though I don't use it, I'm kind of old-fashioned that way. You know you really don't have to draw hair. Hair is not that important. You don't have to draw hands if you don't want to; it's not about the hands. You want a good eraser because you are going to mess up, I promise. A definite don't is do not ink until you're ready because you don't want to have to redraw something. Especially if you have a client sitting right beside you; they're not going to want to sit there and watch you draw it all over again. Another great thing is to have a sketching kit that you can pretty much take with you wherever you go because you never know when you're going to get inspired to do what you're going to do. You want to have it on-hand so that you get that idea right out of your head before it's gone. It's happened to me a million times and I learned my lesson. Once I'm happy with the sketch, I will usually go in and give it some ink. And even at this point, you still can ink in the sketch and not worry about the pencil; that's what erasers are for, it's no big deal. So here we go. And try to keep your lines smooth and beautiful. And don't be fazed if they break because that just adds some dimension and what not, "character" we'll call it. She's in a long cap sleeve gown. I'm really into like elongating the body with seam lines; that's one of my things. And even if you don't go straight over your pencil lines, just kind of go with the flow; let your body feel it as you go. Don't over think it; that's a big no-no. Give it some bead work. And like you know, even if you're drawing lace, if you're drawing a plaid, what have you, as long as you have a piece of the fabric on the same page, it really could just be a little squiggle on the sketch; it's not really meant to be that literal. Don't get too hung up on those details. Because it's all about giving the notion of what the finished product is going to be and showing who you're making it for, or who you're trying to get your point across to, right there and then. Those are some of the tricks of the trade, shortcuts, et cetera.

What materials do you use for your drawings? ****************************************************** I use Toison d'Or or Koh-I-Noor pencils ( from 4B to 8B), Copic markers, Derwent coloured pencils, Canson paper or Fabriano paper, Factis eraser, metal pencil sharper and Winsor and Newton watercolors and ink. 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? ****************************************************** Yes, I studied design and fashion design ( for 4 years) at the University of Arts and Design in Cluj, Romania, Europe. I had a scholarship in Katowice, Poland and another one in Coburg, Germany and a course attended with Gary Tu - a well-known fashion illustrator from Taipei, Taiwan. 3.Where do you get your inspiration? ****************************************************** Basically I am very interested in any image and text that could grab my attention: fashion albums, history of art, books I read, movies I see...In fact, i will share below all my sources of inspiration. Find all my inspirational folders here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/397137153755499/photos/ 4. Do you have any links or books you can recommend? ****************************************************** Definitely I would recommend Gottfried Bammes' Anatomy, Barcsay's Anatomy and David Downton's illustrations that you will find here: http://www.daviddownton.com/ and here: http://instagram.com/daviddownton 5. How long have you been drawing? ****************************************************** 30 years ago some desperate parents interdicted their 3 years old child to use pencils to draw on their house's inner walls :). Due to this, and to the fact that all pencils, brushes and markers were forbidden, the child found another way to express: all chocolate received was hidden and used to "decorate" the walls when all other tools were not available.30 years later, here I am, willing to tell a story on every wall there is. Not with chocolate, like I used to :), but in watercolors, as you can find on my shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/bijuterra. Thank you, and hope to enjoy my illustrations and videos from your comfortable armchair, having a cup of warm milk in your hand and smiling. 6. How can I send my drawing to you? ****************************************************** For any personal advice you can send me your illustrations or questions here: [email protected] and I will reply. Thank you! 7. With her wonderfully simple and playful sketches of various food items as fashionable dresses for runway models, fashion illustrator Gretchen Roehrs shows us just how closely related food and fashion can sometimes be. Art imitates life, as they say, and this holds true for food and fashion as well. Roehrs is not the first to look to her everyday surroundings for fashion inspiration – Shamekh Bluwi uses architectural patterns to complete his fashion illustrations! I made 7 logo options for a clothing brand!

Hey design champions! Today I'm in the early stages of creating a logo for a fashion and lifestyle brand called free candy brand. The inspiration is street style with a little bit of art added into it. I made seven initial design options just to get a feel for the direction that they would like to go in : ) I'm hoping this will help point me into the right direction for when I make the final logo options. I'd love to get your input on these ones if you have time! What materials do you mainly use for your drawings? In general, I use Copic Ciao markers and Touch Twin Markers, Quill Multiboard A4 white paper, 2B and HB Pentel and Faber-Castell 0.5 mechanical pencil and Faber-Castell PVC-Free Space Eraser (Cool name) and I use Uni-ball Signo white fineliner 2. Did you go to any art school or academy? No. I took Studio Arts in senior high school. It's not from that class that I learned evreything I know. I did learn new things from the class, but not to do with fashion illustration or manga drawings. I went to a regular high school, so it doesn't specialize in art. 3. How do you draw the models? Do you use any templates? I started out by tracing models from magazines which is harder than it sounds, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. Then of course, I searched all types of videos on YouTube and some sites as well on Google, which unfortunately, I don't remember. How I learned to draw my models is using the 9-Head technique. 4. How old are you? I am now 19 years old 5. How long have you been drawing? I'm pretty sure I started drawing at 6. That's probably my oldest memory of me drawing. I got into manga drawings when I was 11 years old, I started teaching myself how to draw manga when I was 13 years old. I started developing an interest in fashion design also when I was 11, but I pursued that interest or taken it further at the age of 14. So, I would say I started drawing fashion illustration at the age of 14. 6. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from music, photos on Instagram, Tumblr fashion trends, things that I love. There are times where I am just in an Artist's Block and I feel really brain dead where I can't draw. Or I force myself to draw and it never turns out to be something that I like. 7. Do you have any links or books you can recommend? Definitely! Fashion Illustration by Anna Kiper and Fashion Poses for Fashion Illustrators by Sha Tahmasebi are two books that I own at the moment. I'm hoping to get more. These two books are very helpful if you're a beginner or even if you want to be a bit more advanced. MUSIC: produced in Garage Band NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED

Unique Fashion illustration - Blouse and skirt

02:47
In this video I am going to show you how I bring my fashion illustrations to life. Using a simple pop-up effect that creates a final 3D look on paper. You will find the tools and materials I have used for the following process as well as the 6 steps it will take you to recreate a unique fashion illustration of your own. There are no restrictions on using whichever tools and materials you have at your display, I am only giving instructions on what I have made use of. Materials: Medium surface drawing paper (A4 210mm x 297 mm 110 GSM ACID FREE) Royal Graphite Pencil (2H, H & 2B) Standard sharpener Staedtler graphic eraser Faber-Castell Colour Grip multiple colours Uni-ball eye (ultra micro) waterproof/fade-proof outlining pencil Sharpie permanent marker Tools: Stainless steel standard scissor + (Color Expert) fabric cutting scissor Anco Glue stick I also collected fabric samples, whilst working at fashion houses, which otherwise would have been thrown out. Even though I did not know what to make of them at the time I had a feeling they might come in handy one day. And they certainly did, I have therefore incoperated a sustainable design approach in order to expand my fashion portfolio. Fabric samples used: Variety of leather samples (Full grain, top grain and embossed grain leather) Woven double sided cotton fabric (checkered pattern) Double weave 100% polyester 100% silk/ chiffon rainbow colour With that, here is what you will see in todays video (approximate time 35/45min, real time): First, I will show you the drawing process, here you can get inspiration of Pinterest, fashion magazines or other fashion illustrations online. Important* DO NOT BE SHY, go for your own individual look. Make sure to use a soft shade pencil (H2 or H) so you can easily erase the lines later for the colouring part. The second step is to get your scissors ready and cut out the fabric samples accordingly to your dummies proportion. Then you glue the fabric pieces onto the paper within the outlines of your pencil. The 3rd step is colouring in your drawing, erase line by line and use multiple colours to create different shades/ hues in your illustration. Next, (4th) you will be ready to do the outlining. Here I have simply used a water/ fade proofed black pencil. The 5th step is to use a permanent marker to create strong shaping effect. Finally, (6th) you are now ready to do the final touch-ups, wherever it is needed. Go for it. Hope you enjoyed the process. Please feel free to comment down below and let me know if stumbled across anything interesting, would love to hear from you. It would make my day if you would subscribe to my channel and like the video. 4 Easy To Make Design Ideas Using Fashion Croquis

13:26
In this video, students will learn about fashion design and negative and positive space by creating various backgrounds using different materials to interlay with a human figure. In order to show and present different dress styles. Suitable for Grade 6 and upwards, this activity can be broken down over 3 lessons. Lesson 1 and 2 Students will be introduced to fashion design and trends. Teachers may want to show different fashions around the world and discuss in class. Focus on the shape of clothing as this will lead to the practical component of the lesson. Students will then be given a photocopy of a fashion croquis figure. Students may draw over these print outs to draft clothing designs. Teachers may want to discuss silhouettes how their clothing will look in a silhouette form. Students trial different materials to create patterns and colours to use with their design. Some materials may include watercolours, Magiclay, Posca Markers, Acrylic Paint or Pastels on Cartridge Paper or other materials. These sheets will be used with the fashion croquis once it is cut out. Lesson 3 Students create their clothing design by using a pencil to draw the silhouette of the clothing over their croquis. Once the shape is drawn students will cut the drawn shape out using a knife. Higher level students may want to include finer details in their designs like thin straps and belts. Students can then interlay their material trials with their croquis. Students then take pictures of their different designs. Photos of the completed croquis can then be displayed. Reflection Students can reflect on which patterns and materials worked well and what didn’t work well. Students can also explore different surfaces and textures around the class room and take pictures of their figures. What's it like being an illustrator?

Carla emailed me and asked: What is your artistic process when preparing your work? How did you get started as an illustrator? How did you find your style? Has it changed since you first started? What is most difficult part of your job? And What is the best part of your job? Here is a video for Carla which, I hope answers those questions. It' just too much to type it out so a video is much easier for me and I hope os of interest to others. Let me know if it is and if you would like more of this kind of video and if so, what is your question? Also make sure you subscribe and like the video, please. How I Sketch a Dress Monochromatic Fashion Illustration with Water Soluble Graphite Time Lapse

02:44
How I Sketch a Dress Fashion Illustration with Water Soluble Graphite Time Lapse In this video, I show you how I sketch with water soluble graphite bar and graphite pencils. These are fun for style exploration. This is a part of a much longer video that I will upload soon. For graphite pencils, I selected the thickest graphite. After selecting my pencil, I layer water on the paper first. Then, I do my linework. Water soluble graphite is very much like watercolor. using the same principle, you can use them to create monochrome illustrations. MUSIC CREDITS-Elaine Biss.
