This song is Public Domain: Copyright expired. VIDEO AND Vocals/Instrumentals COPYRIGHT (c) 2019 by CHARLES ELMER SZABO, BMI with exclusive permission for this "SZABO MUSIC" YouTube channel to use The Skye Boat Song "The Skye Boat Song" is a Scottish folk song, which can be played as a waltz, recalling the escape of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Uist to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. VIDEO AND Vocals/Instrumentals COPYRIGHT (c) 2018 by CHARLES ELMER SZABO, BMI The song tells how Bonnie Prince Charlie, disguised as a serving maid, escaped in a small boat after the defeat of his Jacobite rising of 1745, with the aid of Flora MacDonald. The song is a traditional expression of Jacobitism and its story has also entered Scotland as a national legend.[1] Origin The lyrics were written by Sir Harold Boulton, 2nd Baronet, to an air collected in the 1870s by Anne Campbelle MacLeod (1855–1921), who became Lady Wilson by marriage to Sir James Wilson, KSCI (1853–1926), in 1888. The song was first published in Songs of the North by Boulton and MacLeod, London, 1884, a book that went into at least fourteen editions.[1] In later editions MacLeod's name was dropped and the ascription "Old Highland rowing measure arranged by Malcolm Lawson" was substituted. It was quickly taken up by other compilers, such as Laura Alexandrine Smith's Music of the Waters (published 1888). Lawson was the elder brother of artist Cecil Gordon Lawson. According to Andrew Kuntz, a collector of folk music lore, MacLeod was on a trip to the isle of Skye and was being rowed over Loch Coruisk (Coire Uisg, the "Cauldron of Waters") when the rowers broke into a Gaelic rowing song Cuachag nan Craobh ("The Cuckoo in the Grove"). MacLeod set down what she remembered of the air, with the intention of using it later in a book she was to co-author with Boulton, who later added the section with the Jacobite associations. "As a piece of modern romantic literature with traditional links it succeeded perhaps too well, for soon people began "remembering" they had learned the song in their childhood, and that the words were 'old Gaelic lines'," Andrew Kuntz has observed.[2] The song was not in any older books of Scottish songs, though it is in most miscellanies like The Fireside Book of Folk Songs. It is often sung as a lullaby, in a slow rocking 6/8 time. Wikisource has original text related to this article: The Skye Boat Song lyrics [Chorus:] Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye.

Karliene - Skye Boat Song

So I'm hopelessly obsessed with the new tv series, "Outlander" and it only took me three episodes to jump online and buy the books. Once I get myself properly immersed in this story and these beautiful characters, I'm sure I'm going to have songs and ballads pouring out of me as I find this story so gorgeously inspiring. For now, though, I thought I'd start by covering this spine tingly version of "Skye Boat Song" by "Bear McCreary" which is used in the opening titles. As a Scottish lass myself, this was really quite a beautiful one for me to record for it takes me home. The Skye Boat Song, a Scottish Air arranged by David Russell

03:59
Maestro David Russell concludes his excellent CD "The message of the Sea" with this magic tune. I studied it and with this little tune I wish everyone merry Christmas days and a Happy 2014. You can listen to the song interpreted beautifully here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKTIyu_1v_M&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLF4DF341EF17EF165 The lyrics are: Skye Boat Song Scottish Air Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry. Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye Loud the wind howls loud the waves roar Thunderclaps rend the air Baffled our foes stand by the shore Follow they will not dare Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry. Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye Many's the lad fought on that day Well the claymore did wield When the night came silently lain NOTE This is an old Hebridean rowing song. The melody became well-known as a song telling of the famous escape in 1745 of Bonnie Prince Charlie together with Flora Macdonald and some followers from mainland Scotland to the isle of Skye.

My brother arranged this piece and my family sang it. We hope you enjoy this song! A note on our interpretation: We wanted to branch out into this genre of music, as it has been close to us for a long time. We tried to combine the simple, campfire charm of folk music with our typical cinematic sound. We decided to incorporate a couple extra beautiful Scottish melodies within the piece, (The Bluebells of Scotland, and Bonnie Charlie) as they seem to resonate with the text and the feeling of the piece as a whole. We hope you enjoy this one! Thanks so much for your support! Lyrics: Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand on the shore, Follow they will not dare. So here it is, the first proper paddle of the outing, and it was a stunner. This place is really something else, can't think of anywhere in the UK like this, perhaps The Slieve League, but that is in Eire. The weather was fantastic............right up until we launched!! It was a choppy ride over, and even more choppy coming back, but this Cetus is absolutely made for me, and I can take much more of the choppy stuff now. The first thing you realise, when you do this paddle, is the amount of time it takes to reach the head of the Sea loch. The scale of the place is staggering, and you begin to wonder if something is holding you back, it isn't, it's just Mother Nature, and Physics and stuff. At the head of the Loch, you encounter the river emptying out of Loch Coruisk. It's only a few hundred yards, but is quite boggy in places, but the view is about the best I've seen in the UK so far. The Salty Seadogs, who set out at the same time as us, actually carried their boats right up to paddle Loch Coruisk, and planned to camp out overnight. Don't know how they got on, but I presume, not very well, as a Northerly wind got up, and stayed with us for the next 4 days approaching Gale force at times, then it dropped to nothing as you can witness for yourselves in the upcoming videos.

SKYE BOAT SONG : Illustrated Karaoke of a Traditional Scottish Song

05:17
TRADITIONAL SCOTTISH SONG: "The song recalls ther story of the escape of the young pretender Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) after his defeat at Culloden in 1746 and commemorates the many Scots who died and were exiled for the Jacobite cause. Prince Charles escaped from Uist to the Isle of Skye in a small boat with the aid of Flora MacDonald. He was disguised as a serving maid. The adherents of Scottish nationalism regard the event as an important national legend. Flora later emigrated to the Carolinas in the US, but later returned Scotland and is buried at Kilmuir on the north coast of Skye. Prince Charlie is buried near Rome where he was born. The tune has its origins in a Gaelic sea shanty. The lyrics were written by Sir Harold Boulton, Bart. (1859 - 1935), to an air collected by Miss Annie MacLeod (Lady Wilson) in the 1870s. The song was first published in Songs of the North by Boulton and MacLeod, London, 1884, a book that went into at least fourteen editions. LYRICS: Chorus: Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand by the shore, Follow they will not dare. Chorus Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep, Ocean's a royal bed. Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep Watch by your weary head. Chorus Many's the lad fought on that day, Well the Claymore could wield, When the night came, silently lay Dead in Culloden's field. Chorus Burned are our homes, exile and death Scatter the loyal men; Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath Charlie will come again.
