Today, we'll talk about how to find an inexpensive, but trailworthy beginner mountain bike. In this video I use a $329 XC Hard tail mountain bike as an example, and even do a little bit of shredding on it. Previous video: https://youtu.be/TGK0qVbP830 El Oso Niño Kids Fat Bike: http://amzn.to/28PBGEy Line 24 Kids Hardtail: http://amzn.to/1Y3q0dU This is Domingo, a pretty average sized adult, and here’s me riding a 24” kids mountain bike. We’ll get back to that in a minute, but first let’s talk about kids bikes in general. I know that pricey kids bikes are a tough sell for most parents. Kids grow really fast, and they change their interests from day to day. For $150 bucks, you can get them something that pedals around until they grow out of it. From what I can see, this is what most kids end up with. Given the reasons I mentioned, it’s hard to blame any parent for this, especially when you consider the other costs that come along with kids. Some parents do see the value in spending a little more though. A nice kids bike will have better parts and a smoother ride, but I think that’s obvious to most people. “Good parts” isn’t a good enough selling point for most parents, but I think the weight of the bike should be. At 6 years old, I weighed about 45 pounds, but the weight of this cheap 20” kids bike is 36 pounds. Now let’s say you weigh 160. How would you fare on a 130 pound bike? How well could you stop it, or maneuver it? That’s about what this bike would feel like to a 6 year old. Even if they have the strength to pedal and climb hills with it, let’s also consider the brakes and shifters. You hear that? That’s a little kid shifting gears. Kids learn real quick, but their hands aren’t very strong. A well designed kids bike will not only be to scale with their weight, but also use parts that are refined enough for little hands. These kids were all able to hold a decent pace on Saturday, partially because they’re all bad asses, but also because they have decent bikes. So with those points made, let’s have some fun. We have here, two nice kids bikes that I’ll be giving away later this afternoon. Before that, my sister and I are going to take them out on some easy trails to see how they ride. I assembled both of these earlier this week, knowing that we’d be doing this, so I made sure they were both tuned up from top to bottom. The plan was to go easy on these bikes, but I was having a little too much fun on what felt like a 24” dirt jumper. Lucky for this bike, there were no jumps around. I decided to take a chance and see if I could bunny hop the hardtail on to this picnic table. The lower bench was no problem but the top part looked pretty scary. Keep in mind that this also means dropping off the other side—all 155 pounds of me. Both bikes left the trailhead in perfect working order, ready for more abuse from the kids. And abuse them they did… From hard shifting, to crashes, to direct impacts on the chainrings, these bikes held up to exactly the kind of abuse you could expect from kids. If you want see more about this event or these bikes, check the description for a link to my previous video. So nobody expects you to get a $3000 carbon race bike for your kid, but getting a better bike with kid friendly components will ensure that they get a fun and enjoyable introduction to mountain biking. At the very least, do it for yourself. After all, the faster they go the more fun it’ll be for you to follow them.

In this video we talk mostly about what to look for in a good beginner bike, namely the things that make it affordable, functional, reliable, and easy to upgrade later on. These are the bare bones things a trail worthy mountain bike should have. We also talk a bit about helmets, and why you might want to spend a bit more on a better one. All Products in this video: https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/mountain-biking-explained/ Choosing a beginner bike: https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/?p=1286&preview=true ****** Last time, we set Lisa up with everything she needed to start mountain biking. She now has a bike, a helmet, a hydration pack, gloves, and a multi tool. She also has a floor pump, and a rack to transport her bike with. As Lisa progresses we’ll be looking at all this stuff in more detail, but today we’re going to focus on the two things you need most to get on the trails: A bike, and a helmet. Even if you don’t have your own bike—even if you plan on renting a bike, I still recommend you get your own helmet wearing someone else’s helmet kinda freaks me out. Lisa is wearing a Kali Protectives Chakra, which would be considered a general purpose mountain biking helmet. It’s lightweight, has good ventilation, fits securely, and looks cool, which are all things you might spend a couple of extra dollars for. Really cheap helmets are usually bulky, uncomfortable, and poorly ventilated, and that’s no fun. The Chakra, like most bike helmets is single impact, so it’s only made to protect your head once. If your helmet gets impacted, it should be replaced even if the damage isn’t visible. In my experience, shoes wear out before helmets do, so don’t cheap on a helmet just because you might need to replace it. Even a real good one is under $50. For the rest of this video, we’ll be talking about bikes; specifically, what should you look for in a good beginner bike? Well the four ities of course. The four ities are: affordability, reliability, serviceability, and simplicity. To find a bike with all four ities, you can go to a bike shop, search online, and even buy used. Rather than tell you exactly what to get and where to get it from, I’d rather help you understand what to look for so you can choose a bike on your own. I’ll be using Lisa’s bike as an example, because I chose it specifically for these reasons. At around $650, the Hook is of pretty good value. In the last video I mentioned that this is a hardtail, meaning it only has a suspension fork. This, as opposed to a full suspension bike that squishes down in the rear as well. While full suspension bikes are great, they’re also a lot more complex than hardtails. This complexity adds cost, weight, and additional maintenance, so only go this route if you’re comfortable spending some extra money. Figure on at least 500 for a trailworthy hardtail, and at least 1200 for full suspension. These are just guidelines, and I stress that the first ity might be different for different people. Let’s take a look at some other characteristics of Lisa’s bike. First of all it has disc brakes, as opposed to rim brakes. Disc brakes are virtually maintenance free besides changing the pads, and they’ll stop the bike even when it’s covered in dirt and mud. These are activated by cable, but more expensive bikes use hydraulic fluid. While hydraulic is better, any disc brake is better than a rim brake. Moving on you can see that Lisa’s wheels have quick release levers, which make removal of the wheels possible without tools. More expensive bikes will come a very similar looking thru axle. On the other hand if a mountain bike wheel is held on with nuts, you are looking at an extreme cost cutting measure which will make the bike difficult to maintain and next to impossible to upgrade. Aside from specialty bikes like dirt jumpers, you want a mountain bike with levers on the axles. Turn on the closed captions to read the rest of the transcript.

Welcome to Pisgah Forest, home to a huge array of remote and challenging mountain bike trails. To get anywhere here, you need to climb a few thousand feet. To get out alive your bike needs to hold up to roots, sharp rocks, and sustained braking. There’s no cell phone reception out here, and the trails are far too narrow for emergency vehicles. When your very life depends on your equipment, what value would you place on reliability? That fact that we’re at Walmart is pretty irrelevant. It could just as easily be Target, Amazon.com, or even Canadian Tire. They all offer the same thing—bikes built and assembled to the lowest spec possible. With names like trouble, wipeout, ambush, and carnage, these bikes deliver what they promise, but today we’re staying optimistic. Alex and I are taking our time and weighing our options. Even in a sea of super cheap bikes, we can choose the ones that suit our priorities best. We settled on a pair of Genesis V2100’s, which had front discs, threadless headsets, and half decent saddles. As we checked out, reality started to set in. We’d be relying on these bikes for over 5000 feet of elevation change. We’d need all the help we could get. Back at the house I packed everything from sockets to gorilla tape, to zip ties, to extra food, lest we get stranded on the far reaches of mount Mitchell. We set out with our new bikes in tow, and kept two main goals in mind; Make it down the trail in one piece, and finish it off with Mexican food. What started as a ride quickly devolved into a grueling hike. It wasn’t the gearing, or even the weight—we just tried and couldn’t. The tires had no traction, and the bikes flexed like crazy under any kind of torque. Once the grade evened out we had a much easier time, and started to clear some serious ground. We were enjoying nature, and It wasn’t long before we reached our first downhill. Although it was only 50 yards, it was telling. Alex and I settled in for a long ride up the old Mitchell toll road, knowing full well that the climb might be the easy part. We were climbing at a snail’s pace, painstakingly choosing our lines. Our cranks started creaking, and our hubs began to eat themselves, but we picked our way up the toll road without encountering any major mechanical failures. In fact, we were enjoying ourselves. For $149, Alex and I were taking part in an activity enjoyed by the likes of dentists and jewelers, with their pretty $6000 bikes. What do those bikes do that these can’t anyway? On my trail bike, this janky rock garden is a blast. On this bike, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. As you can see, Alex had been going much slower than me. He had the sense to. His bike had not one bit of damage to it, while I was nursing a blown up fork and no drivetrain whatsoever. It was clear by this comparison that speed is the major destructive force on these bikes. As I edit this video, my hands, arms, shoulders, and torso still hurt from this ride. On my trail bike, the brakes can be applied with one finger. On the Genesis, braking is a full body workout that leaves you in pain for days. We had made it to the end, sort of…. we still needed to get to the car. Luckily it was mostly downhill and I could hitch a ride on Alex’s backpack. After beating ourselves up for the better part of 5 hours, there was only one thing on our minds. Playing around on department store bikes might be fun and games, but I found that riding one on an actual mountain bike excursion is not fun, and most definitely not a game. Still I’m amazed that Alex’s bike survived. Although he was using a lot more restraint than I was, everything from the gears to the brakes were working at the bottom. To Walmart’s credit, there are warnings on these bikes that tell you not to take them on mountain bike trails. After our journey, I’d have reason to believe that on a flat dirt path, the Genesis V2100 would inconvenience you at the very most, not kill you. But just like sushi, tattoos, and cosmetic surgery, you’ll regret cheaping out on a bike that you really intend on exploring the mountains with. If you want to fall in love with mountain biking, try renting something first, or save up $400 for an entry level hardtail. In the meantime you can hike these trails for free. With one of these you may be hiking anyway. If you enjoyed this video, I have plenty of others on this topic. Let me know what you think below, and better yet give me some ideas of what to do with these next. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time. Hello YouTube So normally I wouldn't recommend a 600 anything for a new rider because Noobs makes lots of mistakes so I believe they should start on a smaller bike where the mistakes aren't as serve as a bigger bike. Having said that this R6 is awesome and is extremely noob friendly. I was very impressed with the engine and how forgiving it is. Plus with all the electronics makes this bike great for new riders.

This week we’re asking the question, can a bike be too good for you? Some interesting answers to that one. We’ve also got great new tech of course from SRM and Officina Battaglin among others, and a new induction onto the Wall of Fame! Subscribe: http://gcntech.co/subscribetogcntech The GCN Shop: http://gcntech.co/1y Enter the MET unboxing here to win a MET 3K Trenta Carbon helmet http://gcntech.co/winmet3ktrenta Right then, What's hot in the tech world this week? Well, no pun intended, but Shimano. Literally. There has been a fire at Shimano’s OsakA-Sakai city manufacturing plant, reportedly in the anodising section. 200 hundred employees were evacuated. Fortunately no injuries were reported, we just have to hope now that it doesn’t affect Shimano’s production capacity too much. Right then, take a look at these. Any guesses? Yes, Look Keos. But, according to Lotto Soudal pro Adam Hansen, these are prototype New SRM powermeter pedals…. No details available whatsoever, but given SRM’s reputation, you’d think that there must be some rock solid tech in there to warrant a change from their crank based measurements. Having said that, the market has swamped in recent years and the SRM patent which allowed them an almost monopoly for so long elapsed a few years ago now so maybe this is another move to get ahead of the competition? We’ll hopefully get a look at them at the Giro d’Italia. Thinking of Giro, if you’ve been around the sport for a while, the name Giovanni Battaglin will sound familiar to you. Or at least it would if my pronunciation was better. Anyway, Battaglin won the Giro d’Italia AND the Vuelta in 1981 making him a bit of a legend. Brilliantly, a couple of years later he then started building bikes, brazing beautiful steel frames, including for Stephen Roche who did the Giro Tour Worlds triple in ‘87. A bike that then latterly survived the Matt Stephen’s treatment 27 years later. I go through a lot of road bike gloves and after being road bike gloves they get recycled as my motorbike gloves. I’ve just feel “safer” wearing gloves. In the Thailand heat having non-sweating hands feels better. I wear gloves when riding back in Northern Michigan. When it’s cold I wear warm lobster gloves. In my opinion, gel-filled gloves are better than gloves without padding or with simple foam padding. Gel-filled gloves are generally a bit more expensive. I’ve paid a lot and I’ve paid relatively little. Expensive does not mean good, comfortable, well made, or smart. In fact, some of the more expensive have simply stupid designs. They were obviously created by some marketing department with connections to the bicycle accessory sales chain – but not real riders. Some of the great glove that I’ve had the pleasure to ride with have: Smooth gel packs in anatomically correct locations optimized for riding pressure points. Gel packs on the pinky side of the hand. Little tabs that help you peal the gloves off. Soft, absorbable material on the back side of the glove to wipe the face. Webbed, breathable, or open material on the backs of the glove. Some of the stupid ideas put into the gloves I’ve purchases and do not recommend have: Gel packs that stick out square from the glove or simply don’t match human anatomy or riding needs. Gel packs shaped into logos or a fancy design rather than to human hands. Silly marketing or fake features that are not needed or appropriate. Sticky plastic piping on the front of the glove making it impossible to clean your bike computer with the front of your hand. Sharp Velcro, logo edges, or other idiocy on the back of the hand making it impossible to wipe your mouth or eyes with the back of the hand. Unfortunately, the local bike shops feel they need to stock and sell big brand names at big brand prices. This means that most riders get their gloves from the alternate sources at reasonable prices. Where do you buy your gloves? Do you have any brands that you love? Please share in the comments.

Download the complete film on iTunes now: http://radi.al/unReal. unReal is available for digital download on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and more and is currently on a worldwide film tour. To celebrate the release of unReal on iTunes (http://radi.al/unReal), Teton Gravity Research (TGR) and Anthill release one of the most acclaimed segments from the film. Widely recognized as the best slopestyle mountain biker in the world, Brandon Semenuk has become the first mountain biker to film a full segment in a single continuous shot. This uninterrupted shot was filmed by the most advanced gyro-stabilized camera system, the GSS C520, mounted to a truck on a custom road built next to a custom trail that took three weeks to build. Entire days of our lives can pass by without meaning, yet within these moments of absolute clarity there’s an entire lifetime worth remembering. It’s simply a matter of letting the rest of the world melt away…" ABOUT UNREAL Sony presents unReal with Shimano & Trek, a new film produced by Teton Gravity Research & Anthill Films starring Brandon Semenuk, Brett Rheeder, Cam McCaul, Graham Agassiz, Steve Smith, Tom van Steenbergen & Thomas Vanderham, with Brook Macdonald, Finn Iles, Ian Morrison, James Doerfling & Matty Miles. Lots of requests for testing on 2-stroke engines. A 2-stroke bike seems like a great way to performance test alternative fuels and additives. I purchased the 2-stroke bike kit off of Wish.com, but they are also available on Ebay. Recently on GCN and GCN Tech we've looked at carbon myths, we’ve lifted the lid on aluminium and investigated whether steel is in fact real. But there’s one big gap in the GCN materials science course though. Titanium. Simon has a look at a number of things you might not know about titanium. Subscribe: http://gcntech.co/subscribetogcntech The GCN Shop: http://gcntech.co/46 Simon dives in deep to have a look at what makes titanium arguably the most desirable material to have a bike made from, and just what makes titanium bikes so expensive. This is definitely one for the science glasses, as we discuss Young's Moduli, density, and even the technique needed to weld titanium. Is a titanium bike your dream bike? Upon first coming across the Aprilia SR150, you’ll immediately be able to discern that this is not your run-of-the-mill scooter, and chances are, you’ve seen this beauty around town. The SR150 is the very first crossover two-wheeler to land in Nepal. Sharp, fine lines run through it and the racy graphics add to the sportiness of its design. Some resemblance in the colour schemes with Aprilia’s bigger bikes is noticeable and the twin-lamp headlights and the sporty tail-light provide an aggressive look to this beauty. But it’s when you compare it to the likes of Honda, Yamaha and Mahindra scooters that the Aprilia SR150 comes across as a machine that’s different from the pack. On my way into work today I had no bike chain problems. If you ever convert your multi-geared bicycle to single speed and do not install a chain tensioner, expect to replace the chain more often than usual because the 'magic gear' setup depends on the exact correct chain tension. Right now my odometer reads 2600 miles, so we'll see how long it takes before the chain becomes too slack again. I will test out some different bicycle chains in the future to see if they last longer before stretching and going slack. Bonus tip: good chainline is also critical. Thanks for watching! And please subscribe! http://www.bikeblogger.com

The mini bike is so fun. And the first video went down super good so I'm modifying the bike as planned to look and feel more like my dirt jump hardtail. Pretty nervous about hitting my slopestyle mtb jumps at the compound, but it's happening on the 16 inch!!
