Caribbean Sea

21:06
The Caribbean Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean located in the tropics of the Western hemisphere. It is bounded by the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and Central America to the west and southwest, to the north by the Greater Antilles starting with Cuba, to the east by the Lesser Antilles, and to the south by the north coast of South America. The entire area of the Caribbean Sea, the numerous islands of the West Indies, and adjacent coasts, are collectively known as the Caribbean. The Caribbean Sea is one of the largest seas and has an area of about 2,754,000 km² (1,063,000 sq. mi.). The sea's deepest point is the Cayman Trough, between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, at 7,686 m (25,220 ft) below sea level. The Caribbean coastline has many gulfs and bays: the Gulf of Gonâve, Gulf of Venezuela, Gulf of Darién, Golfo de los Mosquitos, Gulf of Paria and Gulf of Honduras. 10 Most Dangerous Islands In The World

10 Most Dangerous Islands In The World ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] There are many beautiful islands all over the planet. Some of them are beautiful destinations which many people head to for vacation spots or just to get away from society. But stunning as they may be, there are islands that hold just as much danger as they hold beauty. Check out these 10 Most Dangerous Islands In The World. 10. Tristan da Cunha - The British island group of Tristan da Cunha stands profoundly alone in the South Atlantic. It’s the world’s most remote inhabited island. It is so precariously occupied that when a volcanic vent erupted in 1961, the whole population was evacuated to England. 9. Rockall Ireland - Don't be embarrassed if you've never heard of Rockall. Most people haven't. It's probably because Rockall is one of the most desolate, despairing places on earth. This tiny island is constantly buffeted by 34-knot winds and pummeled by 30 foot and occasionally higher ocean swells. 8. Bear Island - Bjornoya, better known as Bear Island, is the southernmost island in the Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard, 400 miles north of mainland Europe -- but only on paper, given that it's almost 150 miles south of the Norwegian island chain with which it's lumped. 7. Ramree Island - Ramree Island is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world after harboring a dark secret which resulted in the of hundreds of people. The island off the coast of Burma was a big part of World War II with some battles taking place within it. In 1945, British soldiers drove Japanese fighters off the main part of the island into the dense mangrove forests. 6. Farallon Islands - Named for the Spanish farallón, meaning a rocky pillar jutting from the sea, the Farallones was called “the devil’s teeth” by sailors in the 1850s for their ragged profile and treacherous shores, the cause of many a shipwreck. 5. Hashima Island - located 15 kilometers from Nagasaki, is reputed to be a tourism heaven on earth. However, it contains the graves of hundreds of Chinese. Hashima Island could once claim the title of the most densely-populated spot on the planet. 4. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the world’s largest collection of floating trash, and for whatever reasons aside from human stupidity, is the most famous. It lies between Hawaii and California and is often described as being “larger than Texas,” even though it contains not a square foot of surface on which to stand. 3. Saba Island - The island of Saba rises majestically from clear azure waters, stretching its summit to caress the clouds... It is like no other Caribbean destination. Untouched by the quickening pace of the modern world, an island caught within a moment. 2. Miyake-Jima, Japan - About 160 kilometers south of Tokyo is the town of Miyake-Jima, sitting at the base of the volcano that shares its name. This town is covered with a cloud of harmful Sulphur dioxide gas, spewed into the air by volcanic eruptions. The area’s cold and heavy weather systems make it worse. 1. The Island of the Dolls, Mexico - The Island of the Dolls, or in Spanish, La Isla de las Munecas, is one really creepy spot. The island, which is fairly close to Mexico City, is overflowing with dolls hanging from trees. Myths abound about the island. We hope you enjoyed our video, let us know in the comments which one you think is the most dangerous. Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It's known for cloud-shrouded mountains and beaches. Many of its former sugar plantations are now inns or atmospheric ruins. Caribbean Islands - Best Travel Destination

01:29
The Caribbean is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean), and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 700 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean islands, consisting of the Greater Antilles on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), are part of the somewhat larger West Indies grouping, which also includes the Lucayan Archipelago (comprising the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands) north of the Greater Antilles and Caribbean Sea. In a wider sense, the mainland countries of Belize, Guyana, and Suriname may be included.

St. Lucia Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia (4K 60fps)

06:40
https://www.expedia.com/St-Lucia.d168.Destination-Travel-Guides Floating like an emerald teardrop between the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea is the island nation of St Lucia. For centuries the original Arawak and Carib made their homes around the islands northern bays. In the 1550s, the notorious buccaneer, Peg Leg Le Clerc, became the first European to settle here. After the pirates came the plantations, and the bittersweet years of sugar and slavery. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, St Lucia was pulled back and forth between the French and British, before finally gaining her independence in 1979. Right in the heart of the capital, Castries, the main square pays tribute to two of the island’s Nobel Prize winning sons. Just across from the park, visit the basilica, filled with murals that blend the colours and traditions of Africa, the Caribbean and the West. At the Central Market, taste the fruits of this island’s volcanic soil, enjoy real St Lucian home cooking, and browse crafts made by local hands. The creation story continues at Eudovik’s Art Studio, where master carvers transform tree roots into sensual works of art. The sleepy French colonial town, Soufriere, is cradled by some of the island’s greatest natural treasures. Just a short boat ride away is one island’s finest resort beaches, Anse Chastanet. While nestled between the two volcanic spires of Gros and Petit Piton, is one of the west coast’s most secluded hideaways, Sugar Beach.

Caribbean | Windward Islands | St Lucia (Helen of the West Indies)

37:18
St Lucia was the 5th port of call on the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory.. The island's beauty has earned it the nickname "Helen of the West Indies" and I would consider this to be one of my favourite islands that we visited on our cruise. The island is quite mountainous, owing to its volcanic features in particular the two peaks that rise from the sea- Gros Piton and Petit Piton (2,619ft and 2,461ft respectively). St Lucia is still geologically active and boasts the world's only 'Drive-in' Volcano at La Soufriere, also known as the Sulphur Springs due to the multitude of thermal springs in the area- some are far to hot to bathe in, however nearby there is a bath house whereby the natural springs are at a more tolerable level, in addition you can also take a hot mud bath. The beaches are not the usual crisp white sand you see in other Caribbean islands, but has more of a darker shade (black in places) due to the sand being based on volcanic rock. To get around the can take quite some time despite its size as alot of the main roads circumnavigate the island, and to travel in land the roads are often quite steep and twisty due to the terrain. This can lead to some unexpected, spectacular views at times. The island is mostly covered by a rich rain forrest, and due to the rainfall and fertile soil there is a large variety of plants and fruits that are grown on the island. We did not book one of the Carnival excursions as the trips were too short and could not be combined to see what we wanted to see due to timings. Instead we booked a "Scenic Tour of Sourfrier" privately. On the day we had the advantage of having the entire minivan to ourselves as no-one else was booked on the tour, so in effect we had a 'private tour' as opposed to be herded round in large groups (of people I often find loud/annoying) as is normally the case on the cruise ship organised tours. Our driver 'Shan' was amazing and given the fact that we were the only people on the tour, also meant that we had individual tours at each of the destinations along with being able to spend more time in places to look around etc. He carried a cool box in the minivan which had complimentary refreshments for the day. While driving round Shan was fully of interesting insights relating to St Lucia and was happy to answer any questions. It all made for a very enjoyable day and to be honest I was sad to leave as I genuinely liked St Lucia as the people are warm and friendly and when walking around, you do not get harrassed by vendors as is normally the case with other Caribbean islands. It was a very relaxing place and definetly one I would return to for a longer stay. During our time on St Lucia we were able to see: - The Pitons (from a distance, as climbing them takes some experience) - Toraille Waterfall (You can swim in the plunge pool - but the water is very cold!) - Diamond Waterfall and Botanical Garden - Originally a sugar plantation, it has been transformed into a diverse botanical garden with fruits, nuts, flowers and trees from around the world growing here. There are independent tour guides who will take you on a tour of the garders our's (Alexander) was very knowledgeable and an interesting character! We had a lot of fun! There is also a natural spring bath here which is available for a small charge. St Lucia has a mixture of French and British influences as it was fought for on many occasions in the past before finally becoming a British colony; though now independent since 22nd February 1979, it is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the UK. Napoleon Bonaparte's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais was from St Lucia.

Caribbean Islands

03:38
The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which are enclosed by the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and North America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia). The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north, the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands or the Lucayan Archipelago, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Geopolitically, the West Indies are usually regarded as a subregion of North America and are organized into 30 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. From January 3, 1958, to May 31, 1962, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies. The West Indies cricket team continues to represent many of those nations. ( source Wikipedia )

Assassin's Creed 3 Caribbean Sea Gameplay

13:28
The Caribbean Sea is a sea that is part of the Atlantic Ocean, which is bordered by the Caribbean islands, Central America and South America. The term "Caribbean" comes from the indigenous Carib people, who lived on the islands before the Age of Discovery. The European Empires relied on the Caribbean islands for crops, such as sugar and coffee beans, which were in high demand. During the 1710s, trade ships on the Caribbean Sea became a target for pirates, like the Assassin Edward Kenway, who sailed these waters on the Jackdaw. Edward's grandson, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, sailed this sea several times while acting as the captain of the Aquila during the 1770s. Throughout the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress came to realize that by targeting ships on the Caribbean Sea and disrupting trade, it would give more reason for the British to consider the war an unnecessary financial strain and to subsequently surrender.

Indigenous Names of the Caribbean Islands

09:50
The Caribbean islands was inhabited by the Amerindians for some 4000 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. Therefore, of course, they had their own names for the islands. There were 2 distinct groups. 1) The Arawak’s – Also known as Taino. 2) The Caribs – Also known as the Kalinago Cuba – Some authors think it was names after the town of Cuba in the Beja in Portugal, but I am almost sure it is a derivation of the indigenous name, Cubao, its way to close for it to be a coincidence. Although the meaning is not sure Cubao may be translated to “Where the fertile land is abundant”. Jamaica – This one is easy because I think most persons know that the indigenous name for Jamaica is Xaymaca, which of course, Jamaica is derived from. The meaning of Xaymaca is “land of wood and water or land of Springs” Hispaniola – for those that don’t know, Hispaniola is the name if the whole Island that includes the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. So, the original names might have been Ayiti or Kiskeya, Ayiti of course became Haiti. Ayiti means rough earth or mountainous land. Kiskeya means Mother of all lands. Puerto Rico – Which means rich Port in Spanish. Indengous name was Boriken which itself means “land of the Valiant and noble Lord”. Anguilla – which means eel is some form of early Spanish was named Malliouhana by the Taino natives it means Arrow Shaped Sea Serpent because of its shape. St. Martin – This refers to the entire island, not the different parts as you know St. Martin is shared by the Netherlands and French. The island is named after Saint Martin of Tours because Christopher Columbus named on St. Martin’s Day. 11 November. The original indigenous names where Soualiga or Oualichi which means “land of Salt”. St. Kitts – Which has a formal name of Saint Christopher Island, Ingenious name was Liamuiga which means “fertile land” Nevis – Which is derived for the Spanish phrase “Nuestra Senora d las Nieves” meaning Our lady of the Snow”. The Carib name was Oualie, meaning “land of beautiful waters”. Montserrat – named after the Virgin of Montserrat of Montserrat mountain near Barcelona in Catalonia in Spain. Its Carib name is Alliouagana, which means “land of prickly Bush”. Barbuda – Which most lightly means “bearded” original Carib name was Wa’omoni meaning “land of Herons or Large birds” Antigua – ancient in Spanish – original indigenous name is Waladi which mean “land of Fish Oil” Guadeloupe – named after the Virgin Mary, venerated in the Spanish town of Guadalupe. With the indigenous name being Karuhera. Means “island of beautiful water” Dominica – named after the Latin word for Sunday after the day Christopher Columbus spotted the island. The Caribs named it Wai'tukubuli which means “Tall as Her Body” Martinique – The name evolved from the original name giving to it Martinica to Madinina Which mean “island of flowers”. There are claims that Madinina is the Carib name of the island but there is evidence it was also called Jouanacaëra meaning ‘the island of Iguanas St. Lucia – names after Saint Lucy of Syracuse. The Carib name was Hewanorra meaning “land of the Iguanas St. Vincent – so named because it is said Columbo “discovered” it on 22 January, the feast day of Saint Vincent of Saragossa. The Carib name is Hairouna meaning “land of the blessed.” Grenada – Not totally sure the original of name Grenada, one theory is it names after the town of Granada in Spain. The indigenous name is Chamerhogue, but I could not find the meaning of this word. Barbados – Derived from the Spanish word Los Barbados, meaning “the bearded ones”. The indigenous name is Ichirouganaim with possible translations meaning Red land with white teeth” or just “teeth” about the coral Reefs. Tobago – Which has no other recorded name other than that of Tobago which means tobacco pipe. It can be indigenous as the word for Tobacco has roots in native Taino/Carib languages. Trinidad – So named because the full Spanish name was “Isla de la Trinidad” which means the island of the Trinity”. The original Indigenous name was said to be Iëre meaning “land of the Hummingbird” but it has been accepted that that was a corruption of the Awarak work Kairi which mean simple “island”. ________________________________________________________ Follow me! - Facbook - https://www.facebook.com/yofootexplores - Subscribe - https://www.youtube.com/c/yofootexplores - Instagram! - @yohanpartap - Tumblr - yofoot.tumblr.com ________________________________________________________ Music: Artist: Dj GoToe Track: Soca Riddim beat 2010 Support the artist: https://www.youtube.com/user/djgotoe/videos [email protected]

Saint Lucia - Caribbean Sea

02:02
Saint Lucia is an island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 620 km2 (238 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 160,000. Its capital is Castries. The island nation has been the home of two Nobel laureates, Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott. It is the nation with the second most such honorees per capita after Faroe Islands. One of the Windward Islands, it was named for Saint Lucy of Syracuse by the French, the first European colonizers. They signed a treaty with the native Carib peoples in 1660. Great Britain took control of the island from 1663 to 1667; in ensuing years, it was at war with France 14 times and rule of the island changed frequently (7 times French and British each). In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the "Helen of the West Indies." Saint Lucia has a legal system based on British common law. The judiciary is independent and conducts generally fair public trials. The financial sector has weathered the global financial crisis, but the recession has hurt tourism. Representative government came about in 1924 (with universal adult suffrage from 1953). From 1958 to 1962 the island was a member of the Federation of the West Indies. Finally, on February 22, 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations. The island nation celebrates this every year with a public holiday. It is also a member of La Francophonie. ( source Wikipedia )

The Islands of the Caribbean Lesson 51 - Learn English via Listening English Level 3

02:55
The Islands of the Caribbean Lesson 51 - Learn English via Listening English Level 3 The Caribbean Sea is the large body of water that lies north of the northern tip of South America. Within the Caribbean sea are many islands that have played an important role in the history and culture of the Western hemisphere. By far the largest island in the Caribbean is Cuba. Cuba was formerly a colony of Spain, but became independent in 1902. Cuba became a Communist country in 1959, when a revolution overthrew an unpopular government. After the revolution, many Cubans fled to the United States. Today, the American city of Miami, in the state of Florida, has been greatly influenced by Cuban culture. Tobacco is widely grown in Cuba, and the country is famous for the cigars that are produced in the capital city, Havana. The island of Hispaniola is located just east of Cuba. This island is divided into two countries. In the west is Haiti, where the people speak a variety of the French language that has been influenced by African languages. In the east is the Dominican Republic, where the people speak Spanish. Another important Caribbean island is Puerto Rico. This was previously a Spanish colony, but it is now governed by the United States. Many people from Puerto Rico have moved to the mainland United States, especially the New York area. In many other islands in the Caribbean, English is the main language. The largest of these islands is Jamaica, which is located just south of Cuba. Most Jamaicans are the descendants of African people who were brought to work as slaves on sugar plantations. Jamaica is famous as the birthplace of the style of music called "reggae," which was popularized in other countries by Bob Marley, a famous Jamaican musician. Another important English-speaking Caribbean island is Trinidad. This island is located just north of South America. The population of Trinidad is very diverse. The largest groups of people are descended from people who came from Africa and India, but there are many other nationalities also. Trinidad is famous for a style of music known as "calypso," and for musicians who produce pleasant sounds by playing steel drums. There are also many other, smaller islands in the Caribbean, each with its own unique features. Many of these islands possess fine beaches, and are popular tourist destinations. The warm weather of the Caribbean makes it a popular place for North Americans who must live through cold winters! ☞ Thanks for watching in Channel Learn Speaking English Fluently Basic! ☞ Please share and like if you enjoyed the video :) thanks so much ♥ ─────────────────── ▶ Please subscribe to update new videos. Caribbean Islands Vacation Travel Video Guide

25:35
Travel video about destination Caribbean Islands. Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus, it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past. They inhabit a tropical world, an exotic Caribbean island that consists of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Arawak Indians named the island, Hayti, Land of Mountains, and later Columbus changed the name to Hispanola. Wonderful beaches and golden sand, tropical rainforests that reach almost to the sea and crystal clear turquoise water, a perfect place to relax in one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation, and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author, Ian Fleming. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae. Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than 700 islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can be seen from everywhere, as they overshadow the city's buildings. On each side of its tranquil streets, the city's pastel colored houses look like something from a confectioner's shop. Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis, that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better! Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Leeward and Windward Islands of the Caribbean

02:44
From the http://www.VideoSource.com Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, "Caribbean". Stock footage available from http://videosource.com/search.html Transcript: The British Leeward Islands once were all colonies, but today the only ones remaining under the Crown are Anguila and Montserrat. Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts, and Nevis are independent states. Antigua draws yachtsmen from all over the world to take part in the famous Race Week sailboat races. The French presence in the Caribbean began in Martinique, an island loved by the French painter Paul Gauguin before he ever saw Tahiti. It is a mountainous, volcanic island with a rough coastline that has dozens of coves and miles of secluded beaches. Gauguin's work here represented a break from impressionism, and was a prelude to his better known Tahitian work. Martinique, like many of the Windward Islands, is remarkably fertile. Almost anything that touches the ground grows, and there is a bounty of tropical fruit and flowers that staggers the eye. This lush natural beauty also abounds on Dominica and St. Lucia. Dominica is a large, undeveloped island of mountains and dense rain forest so rich that it contains many plants found in few other places in the world. It offers fabulous hiking trails through unspoiled jungle, lodges set in rain forest retreats, and a secluded preserve where the Caribbean's last remaining Carib Indians continue their traditional ways. Rivers and waterfalls tumble from the mountains to the sea, and legend says there are 365 rivers here, one for each day of the year. Hot springs and geothermal lakes complete the picture of the region's most untamed island.
