Sponsored by Westcott Joel Grimes has traveled the globe creating award winning images making his subjects look larger than life. Whether it is a celebrity or an everyday person, Joel believes that lighting plays a huge role in that process. The biggest challenge for photographers, learning lighting, is two fold: First, with so many options on the market, choosing the right strobe, modifier, etc… can be so overwhelming. Second, lighting is generally taught from a technical approach, making it way too complicated. We have engineers trying to teach artists, totally overlooking the creative process. This is a recipe for disaster. Have you ever heard the acronym KISS, keep it simple stupid? Joel has this saying, “You can rock the world with one camera, one lens and one light”. To learn lighting, you have to start by using one light. Master one light, and you can master ten lights. Follow Joel as he shows you how to create amazing portraits by using just one light. MY INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/kickthegrind/ In the beginning, I had no interest in photography. It seemed complicated, and video was much more attractive. I came across a night photography and light painting tutorial video, and then that all changed. Learning photography is the secret to making beautiful videos. Most of what you learn transfers over directly. It's the key to making art with a camera. When taking photos, the best way to learn is to play. Getting ideas by watching videos about tips, tricks, hacks, how-to's, then going out and make your version of the idea. It's not stealing, it's inspiration, and it's how creatives get creative. We filmed this video in Harinera Nacional, and abandoned flour factory in the north of Mexico City. This place has an interesting history, it exploded about 15 years ago, and now has become a bit of a haven for graffiti artists, and urban exploring. Some important things to keep in mind when light painting: - You need a tripod to stabilize the camera - The camera cannot move. - You'll probably need to manual focus due to the darkness - Use light like a paintbrush. Paint the areas you want to show. - Use a long shutter speed (we did 30s) - Have fun. It usually takes a couple tries. Make sure to check out my friends Raul & Ale (links below) Both YouTubers here in CDMX. They also made vlogs here. Alexey Titarenko was born in Leningrad in 1962. Black and White Magic of St. Petersburg Series "...Once, I came across a book, which for some reason slipped my attention in the past. It was Fjodor Dostoevsky early stories. . . I opened the book at random; the story "White Nights" captivated me so fully that I kept reading it over and over again. Dostoevsky seemed to have read my thoughts. Deeply inspired by this piece, I decided to make a new series of photographs based on the story. For the epigraph, I took the following citation from the story: There are, Nastenka, though you may not know it, strange nooks in Petersburg. It seems as though the same sun that shines for all Petersburg people does not peep into those spots, but some other different, new one, as if bespoken expressly for those nooks, and it throws a different light on everything. In these corners, dear Nastenka, a quite a different life is lived, quite unlike the life that is surging round us. But such as perhaps exists in some unknown realm, not among us in our serious, overserious, time. Well, that life is a mixture of something purely fantastic, feverently ideal, with something (alas! Nastenka) dingly prosaic and ordinary, not to say incredibly vulgar・Listen Nastenka. Let me tell you that in these corners live strange people ・dreamers.* Yet another source of my inspiration was Brahm`s Violin Concerto." From the interview for SHOTS magazine, 2005 * Translated from Russian by Constance Garnett. In: Dostoevsky, Fyodor. White Nights. London: Heinemann, 1970, p. 15 At age 15, he became the youngest member of the independent photo club Zerkalo (Mirror). He graduated from the Department of Cinematic and Photographic Art at Leningrad's Institute of Culture in 1983. His series of collages and photomontages "Nomenklatura of Signs" (first exhibited in 1988 in Leningrad) is a commentary on the Communist regime as an oppressive system hat converts citizens into mere signs. In 1989, "Nomenklatura of Signs" was included in Photostroyka, a major show of new Soviet photography that toured the US. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 he produced several series of photographs about the human condition of the Russian people during this time and the suffering they endured throughout the twentieth century. To illustrate links between the present and the past, he created powerful metaphors by introducing long exposure and intentional camera movement into street photography. The most well known series of this period is City of Shadows. In some images urban landscapes reiterate the Odessa Steps (also known as the Potemkin Stairs) scene from Sergei Eisenstein's film The Battleship Potemkin. Inspired by the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and the novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky, he also translated Dostoevsky's version of the Russian soul into sometimes poetic, sometimes dramatic pictures of his native city, Saint Petersburg. Titarenko's St. Petersburg body of work from the 1990s won him worldwide recognition. In 2002 the International Photography Festival at Arles, France presented this work at the Reattu Museum in the exhibition, "Les quatres mouvements de St. Petersburg" curated by Gabriel Bauret. In 2005, the French-German TV Channel Arte produced a 30-minute documentary about Titarenko entitled Alexey Titarenko: Art et la Maniere. Titarenko's prints are subtly crafted in the darkroom. Bleaching and toning add depth to his nuanced palette of grays, rendering each print a unique interpretation of his experience and imbuing his work with a personal and emotive visual character. This particular beauty was recently emphasized during the exhibition of his prints from his Havana series at the Getty Museum (Los Angeles, May-October 2011). His works are in the collections of major European and American museums, including The State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg); The Getty Museum (Los Angeles); the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art; George Eastman House (Rochester, N.Y.); the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston); The Museum of Fine Arts (Columbus, Ohio); the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston); the Museum of Photographic Arts (San Diego); the Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College (Mass.); the European House of Photography (Paris); the Southeast Museum of Photography (Daytona Beach, Fla.); the Santa Barbara Museum of Fin Arts (Cal.); the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University (N.J.); the Reattu Museum of Fine Arts (Arles); and the Musee de l'Elysee Museum for Photography (Lausanne). http://www.adorama.com Bring a little magic to your studio portraits by creating your very own mystery, magic box filled with light and swirling smoke. With the help of photographer Gavin Hoey's hints and tips, plus his easy to follow steps, you'll soon master the technique. Gavin will start by showing how to light a small magic box. He'll then take the same skills and apply them to a much larger mystery chest in an attic room setting. All without leaving his small home studio. Subscribe for more episodes: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=KingstonTechMemory Transcript: This is really hard. Hi, I'm Khail Anonymous, and welcome again to Kingston's indieHACK. On today's episode of indieHACK, we'll be teaching you how to do light painting. Look, Mom, a Jedi. So, what is light painting? It's essentially a photographic technique in which you take a very long exposure photo with the moving light source or sources and it creates a cool laser effect. It's fun, it's creative and it's actually pretty easy to set up. To get started you'll need three things. A camera, so your DSLR or even you smart phone, a mount to keep those shots steady, so a tripod or those binder clips we showed you in episode one. And lastly a light source that you can easily move around. So a flashlight, any of these cool things, or the light from your smartphone. And don't forget to load up your camera with some reliable memory. We're gonna be using this guy today, Kingston's SDXC class 10 card, it's great for photos and HD video. Next you're gonna wanna make some changes to your camera settings. Make sure your camera is on manual mode, and set your exposure time between 10 and 30 seconds. Next set your iSO to 100, and your F stop between f/8 and f/22. Make sure to manually focus your camera before you start shooting. Then turn off all your lights, and you're ready to go. Now, take a picture, and during your camera's long exposure, write a word or draw a symbol or just any crazy thing that comes to your mind. Have fun, and mess around with the settings, so you can really perfect your light paint. Now that you've perfected the basics of light painting, It's time to try out some of these tricks. This first hack we call the string light stick. Simply get some string lights, and then something to attach it to whether it be a rod or a ruler, and then grab some tape, attach your string lights to the rod or ruler, and make sure to evenly space them out. Make sure they're facing the same direction. Set up your camera, and start taking photos. It's gonna make these really cool streak patterns for you. Next up is the light or grab your string lights and tape them together in a bunch. Then find a center point on the floor by putting down a quarter or something. Then put your hand over that point and stay in that point as you rotate around swinging your string lights. It should create a pretty cool orb effect. This next trick is called Portrait Light Painting. This all allow you to add a subject to your light painting. So you can come up with some pretty cool shots with the same setup as a basic light painting only you'll need a second light source And a friend to help you out. Pick a subject. It could be an inanimate object, it could be your friend, and then focus on your subject before you turn out the lights. What you should get is an image with a subject surrounded by really cool light streaks. Now that you've learned all these tricks, try and combine them and make some really cool light painting photos. So that's our episode on light painting. It's a fun and easy hack you can do with your friends and it'll make some really awesome photos. So get out there and try it out. And don't forget to subscribe to the Kingston channel for more indieHACK episodes. See you guys next time.

If you have no opportunity to buy a suitable lens for bokeh, a good video editing program will help you reach the desired effect. In Movavi Video Editor, you can even find bokeh figure filters. Try the free trial version: https://bit.ly/2UYXOur You’ve probably seen beautiful blurred panoramas of the city night in which lights seem like dazzling, colorful circles. Today we’re going to show you how to recreate this effect and even turn typical circles into fancy shapes! Have no idea how to set aperture parameters? The Movavi Vlog has an answer! Take a look at our tutorial on manual camera settings: Did you like this video on the magical bokeh effect? We have many helpful tutorials on shooting, video editing, and vlogging! Subscribe to the Movavi Vlog, hit the bell button, leave your comments below, and share our videos with your friends: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=MovaviOfficial The coolest bokeh is one with lights in the background. Holiday lighting, street lights, neon signs, or car headlights are perfect for capturing an urban landscape. If you’re shooting inside, candles and wreaths are your best friends. In general, bokeh is any background blurring, it’s not all about turning lights into little circles. But we wanna focus specifically on these little circles ‘cuz they’re the reason we love this effect so much! To recreate this stunning bokeh effect, you need a camera lens that will allow you set the f-stop lower than 2.8. Otherwise, it will be harder to achieve the flawless result you’re looking for. If you’re not sure a lens is worth $300 just for shooting bokeh material, take a more in-depth look at cheaper vintage gear from other countries, like the Helios 44-2 made in the USSR. You don’t have to change the structure of your lens to give the aperture a specific shape. Making a stencil is enough. To test your stencil, take a number of test shots with a widely opened aperture and the stencil pressed tightly against the lens. If everything looks ok, fasten the stencil to your camera with a piece of tape, and get shooting! The magic of photography is determined by the possibility of deciphering, revealing and allowing us to know the world that they provide. Who better to talk to about photos? Of course to an artist like Artak, a young photographer and true member of the Mirzoyan Library – city’s cultural center and meeting place. It's easier to find Artak at work and parties, than at home. He came here once, then stayed for long and still works here. In the artistic setting of the library, reading old albums, we can slowly talk to him about photos and dreams. There are a lot of benefits to speaking slowly. Photographs have the capacity to capture events that cannot be told, that are deemed unrepresentable, which is why we would rather not speak of them. Visions of Light - 1992 Cameramen and women discuss the craft and art of cinematography and of the "DP" (the director of photography), illustrating their points with clips from 100 films, from Birth of a Nation to Do the Right Thing. Themes: the DP tells people where to look; changes in movies (the arrival of sound, color, and wide screens) required creative responses from DPs; and, these artisans constantly invent new equipment and try new things, with wonderful results. The narration takes us through the identifiable studio styles of the 30s, the emergence of noir, the New York look, and the impact of Europeans. Citizen Kane, The Conformist, and Gordon Willis get special attention. I do not claim ownership to any of this content nor receive monetary gain. All rights belong to their respected owners.

Image City Photography Gallery in Rochester, New York changes shows every four weeks. The gallery has been operating for over 8 years and has presented 110 shows as of the beginning of 2014. 13 times each year the gallery partners go through a process of removing the expiring show and installing a new show. This video shows one of those conversions. An extra day of work was involved when the gallery walls received their annual sanding and painting. Over 145 man-hours of labor was involved in the physical process of the changeover, but that doesn't include the additional dozens of hours that went into preparing for the new show, such as reviewing and judging the images submitted by hopeful show participants, preparation of the photo labels, writing and sending the gallery's newsletter describing the show, updating the gallery's website, designing and printing of the show posters and cards, and the distribution of those posters and cards to hundreds of locations around town, the submission of publicity materials to various media outlets, etc., etc. The operation of the gallery is no simple, easy matter. It involves a LOT of work by dedicated and talented partners.
