In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of IAmAlphaM, AaronMarino, and Pete & Pedro is first taking you shopping at Costco and the grocery store. Chicken and fish (salmon, tilapia) are staples. He also picks up some quinoa which has a low hypoglycemic index. He gets apples, avocados, sweet potatoes, bagged salads, oatmeal, and egg whites at the grocery store. Once he gets home, he preps. Sunday is also the day he makes his Blue Apron which hes' been using since 2015. First thing in the morning, he performs fasted cardio and then eats breakfast around 10am - 11am (egg whites, avocado, fruit -or- chocolate oatmeal, fruit). Lunch is around 3pm, consisting of a chicken or salmon salad (his 'power salad'). Then around 6pm, before the gym, he has protein bar or shake. Dinner is Blue Apron -or- chicken breast or fish, sweet potato or quinoa, and vegetable. At night, he always has low calorie ice cream. He doesn't measure anything, and this diet works for him. In this video, I’m going to give you a muscle building 101 course on the most important things you need to focus on when it comes to building bigger muscles and achieving muscle hypertrophy. No gimmicks or phony shortcuts needed here. Just pure muscle building science to help you get over the hump and start packing some size on your frame. To get you started, it is important to understand that everything comes down to just one concept and that is the intensity of your training. Now I don’t just mean how psyched up you are to tackle your next workout. I mean, in addition to that, how intensely focused are you on achieving your goal? If you are as much as you say you are, then you will realize that there are many things that need to be addressed outside of just showing up to the gym and trying hard. It starts with a plan. No successful lifter has ever built appreciable amounts of muscle size without having a plan for getting there. I’m not just talking about knowing what you are going to do in the gym that day (although that would be a great start)! I’m talking about knowing how this workout is going to impact the next one and the next one after that. With a goal in mind you need to have a map for getting to your goal and it starts with knowing what steps you are going to take from one workout to the next. With that in mind, it is now time to actually start lifting the weights. From here, the intensity that I hinted at in the beginning becomes crucial. Are you simply counting to 10 or 12 or are you pushing with every bit of effort with the rep count secondary? I hope it’s the latter. When it comes to training for more muscle size you need to realize that your effort will dictate everything. Overload is critical. The use of compound lifts to build up a strength base is a must in order to set the stage for growth. Your use of other techniques (like volume training) should still equate to an overall overload if the end goal is to get bigger. This is where many people fall off the path. There is simply no way around hard work when you are trying to build muscle. Which leads us to the next point and that is, once your set is done what are you doing with your time. If you sit around and let far too much time pass between sets then you are dramatically decreasing the effectiveness of the workout. Rest times should be prescriptive and serve to keep your muscles stressed for the entire workout. They should not be looked at as times to jump on social media and take you out of the frame of mind necessary for building muscle. In fact, some people ease into their rest periods too quickly. I believe that the use of some sort of set intensifying technique (like drop sets, forced reps, negatives, super sets, etc) is a great way to ensure that you tap into the reserves that your body was likely hanging onto that your mind was unwilling to let go. If you want to achieve greater muscle size you are going to need to interrupt that thought pattern and train harder. I always say, you can train hard or you can train long but you can’t do both. Finally, every natural lifter knows that the only way to build bigger muscles is to allow your body to recover between workouts. This simply can’t happen if you aren’t prioritizing it. In fact, I would say that even if you get everything else right up to this point, if you screw this up, you will blow all opportunities to grow as big as possible. So remember: unless you're in a committed relationship with a guy, keep your options open. 2. He's Pursuing Another Woman Because She Seems Easier I was definitely never that bad, but I know plenty of guys who are. Some guys, who are only looking to sleep around, will often bail on a woman like you. He knows that you're a sexy, confident woman, who isn't going to deal with his shenanigans, so he pursues an easier "target." Once you start positioning yourself as a high-value woman, some guys you'll meet will simply flake on you for a woman he thinks will put out more quickly. This is actually a good thing. It might not feel like it at the time, but it really is. When a guy flakes on you because he's pursuing easier women to sleep with, he's freeing up your time and your emotional energy to be with an actual high-value man. Guys who are only going for easy women are the bottom feeders of the dating world. They're like crabs… scurrying around… looking for the easiest women to sink their claws into. But you… my sexy lady… are a glorious swordfish. You're waiting to be snatched up by a caring, respectful man, and you're not to be messed with. 3. You Always Flake On Guys, and Karma is a Bitch I personally believe in karma, and I believe in the law of attraction, especially with dating. Many times, what you're putting out into the universe comes right back to bite you in the ass tenfold. If you find that you're flaking on guys that maybe you're not that interested in… and you're constantly flaking on them for other guys… then you kind of deserve to be flaked on yourself by the guy that you really want. Stop that behavior immediately and start treating men the way you want them to treat you. In this video, I share with you a three phase plan for losing fat in the abdomen, love handles or waistline area, and the chest. These spots are where most men carry their fat and are the last to lose it when dieting or trying to cut down. The reason for this is actually based on our genetics, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot do something about it. You may even have developed muscles underneath, but as long as the fat is present you will never get a chance to see what it looks like. This means that your priority has to be on cleaning up your nutrition. If you refuse to eat better, no matter what else you do, you will never look better. Early on however, you don’t have to get too specific with your eating. Simply make a pass through your diet and get rid of the obvious garbage that you know is not helping your cause. Sweets, excessive alcohol, sugars, etc can all be removed and replaced with more nutritious foods. You don’t have to necessarily worry about your macros at this point but just getting rid of the junk food and liquid calories. Realizing that it will take some time to see the results of these changes however, you should start chipping away at the trouble spots in another way. For the abdomen, you want to first ensure that you can properly activate the muscles in the rectus and transverse abdominis. Most find this difficult and even when they do perform ab exercises they get frustrated at not being able to feel them. Next, you want to start adding in ab training but mostly in the form of rotational ab exercises. Instead of trying to do crunches and having the fat get in the way of the movement, you can work your abs without having to crunch. Finally, you want to incorporate moves for your entire core, such as with the 7 minute ab workout included above. When it comes to the love handles, you want to start by working the lats. Here especially, you want to focus on full contractions and range of motion to ensure proper development of the muscles that actually insert onto the top of the pelvis near your waistline. The more you can build these muscles the greater the visual differential between your waist and your shoulders and the better the v taper. Next add in direct ab work and finish up with direct oblique training for the best look as your diet gets dialed in. Finally, for the chest you want to stretch it and strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff to posturally improve the visual appearance of your chest. From here, work the serratus anterior. This will give your chest more natural underlying support will helping to visually chisel out the area underneath. Finally, you want to make sure that as your body fat levels decrease and fat loss continues that you are working your chest in all three heads. Use the angles of the band work as an example of how to hit the upper, lower and middle chest. Essentially, you want to follow a diet that isn’t restrictive, if you want to follow it long term. Your diet should be balanced with all the macronutrients (Protein, Carbs, and Fat), along with vegetables. *#2 - Build 'Perfect Plates' Following on from principle #1, you should use the balanced approach of ALL the macronutrients to prepare ‘perfect plates’, which is a guide to how you should portion these. A ‘perfect plate’ is simply ¼ plate Protein, ¼ plate of Carbs, ½ plate Vegetables and a small serving of healthy fats. *#3 - The 4 x 4 Meal Timing Strategy This strategy basically means that you should have 4 meals per day, spaced 4 hours apart. This could be breakfast at 8am, Lunch at 12pm, Snack at 4pm and Dinner at 8pm. This setup helps to keep your blood sugar stable, helping to control cravings and keeps your metabolism high the whole day too. This, paired with the ‘perfect plates’ also controls your calorie intake without you needing to count calories. *#4 - Eat a low-carb breakfast This is the only small tweak to the ‘perfect plates’ principle, which is for breakfast you should eat a low-carb meal. This helps kick-start your metabolism at the beginning of the day and helps hormone levels that let you know you’re satiated. Protein and healthy fats do this much better than carbs, so you’ll feel full until your next meal. *#5 - Pick your 3 "Go-To Foods" Picking your ‘go-to’ foods is basically the easiest way to ensure consistency when following a weight loss diet plan for men over 40. This is simply picking your favorite foods within each of the macronutrient categories. You don’t need to follow the perfect plates principle or worry about what macronutrients it contains. This one small indulgence each week will keep your diet plan sustainable over the long term. *#7 - Hit your ideal water target When you’re following a weight loss diet for men over 40, you need to consider hydration as well as food intake, so you should set a target of around 100–150 oz of water each day. Water keeps you full, and it keeps your metabolism going by keeping your liver clear to metabolize fat. *#8 - Time calories around workouts This is a great tip that you don’t often hear, but timing your calories around workouts means eating your meal after your workout. For example, if you work out in the morning, do so fasted, then eat breakfast. If you train in the evening, have your dinner straight afterward. Timing your free meal for after a workout is great advice too. *#9 - Track your weight & adjust portions Tracking your weight at least twice per week is beneficial to keep an eye on how your weight loss diet plan for men is working. If you weigh yourself Thursday and Sunday, for example, you’ll be able to see trends that occur around any changes or deviations you’ve made throughout the week. It also offers positive feedback loops as you see progress. *#10 - Eat more Cholesterol Eating more cholesterol can sound a bit counter-intuitive, but cholesterol rich foods like eggs will help balance your cholesterol levels as well as testosterone levels, which is super important as a man over 40, looking to lose weight.
