Amazing Technology Invented By MIT - Tangible Media

03:41
At the MIT Media Lab, the Tangible Media Group believes the future of computing is tactile. Unveiled today, the inFORM is MIT's new scrying pool for imagining the interfaces of tomorrow. Almost like a table of living clay, the inFORM is a surface that three-dimensionally changes shape, allowing users to not only interact with digital content in meatspace, but even hold hands with a person hundreds of miles away. And that's only the beginning. Created by Daniel Leithinger and Sean Follmer and overseen by Professor Hiroshi Ishii, the technology behind the inFORM isn't that hard to understand. It's basically a fancy Pinscreen, one of those executive desk toys that allows you to create a rough 3-D model of an object by pressing it into a bed of flattened pins. With inFORM, each of those "pins" is connected to a motor controlled by a nearby laptop, which can not only move the pins to render digital content physically, but can also register real-life objects interacting with its surface thanks to the sensors of a hacked Microsoft Kinect. The Costume Shop at MIT

03:32
The MIT Costume Shop is where creativity flourishes at the Institute. Courses in both costume design and figure drawing are only a couple of the examples of what is offered. The Costume Shop also designs, constructs and assists in all theater art productions on campus often creating all the costumes in house. This video shows how students can take a simple medium like paper and transform them into incredible, and functional garments. MIT Hobby Shop

05:33
In the 1937-38 academic year, Vannevar Bush, then Vice President of MIT, granted a group of 16 MIT students permission to use a room in the basement of building 2. With equipment they found around the Institute they set up a wood and metal shop in the 16-foot by 22-foot area. The club members chose the name "Hobby Shop" based on their belief in the philosophy that the well rounded individual pursued interests outside their profession - hobbies. Now in its 75th year, we take a look back how the Hobby Shop began, and evolved to what it is today. MIT develops a Manufacturing Process to produce Graphene Roll

00:56
MIT engineers have developed a continuous manufacturing process that produces long strips of high-quality graphene. The team’s results are the first demonstration of an industrial, scalable method for manufacturing high-quality graphene that is tailored for use in membranes that filter a variety of molecules, including salts, larger ions, proteins, or nanoparticles. Such membranes should be useful for desalination, biological separation, and other applications The process consists of a “roll-to-roll” system that spools out a ribbon of copper foil from one end, which is fed through a furnace. Methane and hydrogen gas are deposited onto the foil to form graphene, which then exits the furnace and is rolled up for further development. MIT Technology Review

MIT Technology Review MIT Technology Review is a magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology3 It was founded in 1899 as The Technology Review,4 and was re-launched without the "The" in its name on April 23, 1998 under then publisher R Bruce Journey In September 2005, it underwent another transition under the current editor-in-chief and publisher, Jason Pontin, to a form resembling the historical magazine Before the 1998 re-launch, the editor stated that "nothing will be left of the old magazine except the name" It is therefore necessary to distinguish between the modern and the historical Technology Review4 The historical magazine had been published by the MIT Alumni Association, was more closely aligned with the interests of MIT alumni, and had a more intellectual tone and much smaller public circulation The magazine, billed from 1998 to 2005 as "MITs Magazine of Innovation," and from 2005 onwards as simply "published by MIT", focused on new technology and how it is commercialized; was mass-marketed to the public; and was targeted at senior executives, researchers, financiers, MIT Technology Review Click for more; https://www.turkaramamotoru.com/en/mit-technology-review-145.html There are excerpts from wikipedia on this article and video

MIT Technology Review Hails GE Jet-Engine Powered Power Plants as Key Innovation

03:09
MIT's Technology Review Hails GE's Jet-Engine Powered Power Plants as Key Innovation MIT's Technology Review magazine just published its TR50 list of the 50 most innovative companies in 2012. "The TR50 companies are leaders," said Jason Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of the magazine. "They are setting the agenda in their markets and prompting other companies to follow them." GE is on the TR50 list. The editors recognized GE's jet-engine powered gas turbines as a "key innovation" for "building flexible and efficient natural-gas power plants." The technology makes it easier for utilities to handle electricity generated by intermittent sources of renewable energy like wind and solar power. When wind stops blowing, the turbines can go from cold iron to 50 megawatts in just 10 minutes and make up for the lost electricity.

MIT develops technology to digitally program water droplets

02:39
Researchers from MIT are developing a technology that transforms water droplets into programmable, interactive tools for entertainment and communication. The new Programmable Droplets technology is designed to enable users to digitally program water droplets, taken from our everyday environment, and manipulate them via a computer interface. The project is being led by researcher Udayan Umapathi and professor Hiroshi Ishii from the university's Tangible Media Group. They hope the new technology will demonstrate the potential for water as an interactive medium for creativity, art, entertainment and communication, to better connect people to their physical environment. TIM the Beaver: MIT's mascot since 1914

The beaver was chosen as the mascot of Technology because of its remarkable engineering and mechanical skill and its habits of industry. The proposal that the beaver be adapted as the mascot of the Institute was made at the annual dinner of the Technology Club of New York on January 17, 1914. The late President Richard Maclaurin formally accepted the proposal, and at this dinner a group of beavers shown in natural surroundings was presented to the Institute. Since then TIM has affectionately been accepted as a pillar in the MIT community, showing up at all sorts of events.
