With Wolfgang Kubelka, Rudolf Brenneisen (32:23) and Matthias Hamburger (1:03:06) Drug Discovery from Nature Wolfgang Kubelka "Pharmakon": From Poison to Medicine - the Chemical Improvement of Nature? The Greek term "Pharmakon" was used for poison, at the same time for antidote and medicine. During centuries, poisonous and healing plants have been detected by trial and error; it was not before 1800, however, that natural science became successful in isolating and identifying active substances from plants. With the development of chemistry the number of known structures increased enormously, and in many cases their mode of action became explainable. Albert Hofmann in his work, sometimes led by serendipity, gives us excellent examples for classical natural products chemistry. To which extent is it possible to find and improve natural compounds for their use in medicine? Rudolf Brenneisen Cannabis - From Phytocannabinoids to Endocannabinoids The Cannabis plant has been an essential element of traditional medicine for thousands of years. Today, its medicinal use is becoming again popular mainly within self-medication. However, the discrepancy between empirical and evidence-based data is obvious and therefore implies intensive pharmacological and clinical research. On the other hand, the recently discovered Cannabis receptors and their endogenous ligands are potential targets for new therapeutic tools. Matthias Hamburger Contemporary Natural Product Drug Discovery Natural products have been the historically most prolific source for drugs and inspiration for designing synthetic drug substances. Recently, their role in drug discovery has been challenged by the advent of combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput screening. Contemporary opportunities for natural products will be discussed in the larger context of methodological advances and new paradigms in the life sciences. Selected examples will highlight the continued importance of natural products in target discovery and as source for new drug templates with unique properties. LSD - Problem Child and Wonder Drug International Symposium on the Occasion of the 100th Birthday of Albert Hofmann Friday, 13 January 2006 in Basel

Jonathan Bisson Jonathan Bisson will follow up speaking about how he utilizes Kotlin in his daily professional life and he will explore some of the applications he has built, some of the libraries used (SpringBoot, TornadoFX) and the science surrounding them. - Bio #2: Jonathan Bisson is a Research Assistant Professor at UIC in the College of Pharmacy. His work is a mixture of drug discovery from natural products (pharmacognosy) and software development. He started using Kotlin around two years ago and it his now his major language (accompanied by a good deal of Python for all the graphics and statistics). Join us as we hear from two of our regular attendees, John Burns and Jonathan Bisson as they speak about building and utilizing Domain Specific Languages (DSLs for short) in Kotlin. Domain specific languages are subsets of functions in a programming language designed specifically to ease development and communicate intention more effectively within a particular problem-space. These talks targets people with at least an intermediate understanding of Kotlin. https://www.meetup.com/Chicago-Kotlin Kotlin

The Role of Flash Chromatography in Natural Product Research

24:49
Natural Product Chemists are at a disadvantage when purifying active compounds from extracts because, in most cases, the compounds are unknown to the chemist until they are purified. The combination of automated flash chromatography and their columns with new detection techniques allows chemists in this field to quickly determine which columns are suitable for purifying their compounds, and also provide early recognition of previously discovered compounds. This webinar discusses column screening strategies including Wide Polarity Range chromatography, and detection techniques that allow a user to quickly and simultaneously determine columns useful to purify a compound, suggest fractions to be combined for screening, and screen previously identified compounds. Researchers working in Pharmacognosy, Natural Products, and Food and Flavor chemistry would benefit from the techniques presented in this webinar. Description

Scientific research into new natural products at the John Innes Centre

07:28
Plants and microbes produce a wide spectrum of natural products, which give them their huge range of colours, flavours and scents. These chemicals are used to repel pests, diseases or competitors or to attract pollinators, but for humans they represent a potential source of new medicines, flavourings, antimicrobials or other useful compounds. A major area of study at the John Innes Centre is in understanding how and why plants and microbes make these natural products. With this knowledge, we are looking at ways of exploiting them to help maintain our health, to improve crops plants and to maintain a safe, nutritious food supply. Professor Anne Osbourn leads a research group investigating the structure, function and evolution of natural products, in particular in crop and model plants. Professor Cathie Martin's research background is in cellular specialisation; in particular how flower colour and shape is determined. More recently she has been investigating how plants can be improved by manipulating the natural products that they produce.

marketing research for beginners, understanding marketing research fundamentals

01:13:22
marketing research for beginners, understanding marketing research fundamentals. Definition: The process of gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about a market, about a product or service to be offered for sale in that market, and about the past, present and potential customers for the product or service; research into the characteristics, spending habits, location and needs of your business's target market, the industry as a whole, and the particular competitors you face. Market research provides relevant data to help solve marketing challenges that a business will most likely face--an integral part of the business planning process. In fact, strategies such as market segmentation (identifying specific groups within a market) and product differentiation (creating an identity for a product or service that separates it from those of the competitors) are impossible to develop without market research. Market research involves two types of data: Primary information. This is research you compile yourself or hire someone to gather for you. Secondary information. This type of research is already compiled and organized for you. Examples of secondary information include reports and studies by government agencies, trade associations or other businesses within your industry. Most of the research you gather will most likely be secondary. When conducting primary research, you can gather two basic types of information: exploratory or specific. Exploratory research is open-ended, helps you define a specific problem, and usually involves detailed, unstructured interviews in which lengthy answers are solicited from a small group of respondents. Specific research, on the other hand, is precise in scope and is used to solve a problem that exploratory research has identified. Interviews are structured and formal in approach. Of the two, specific research is the more expensive.

8 All-Natural Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Away

09:17
How to prevent mosquito bites? On a hot summer day, outdoor activities can be ruined by mosquitoes. These little guys can spoil every holiday, especially if you taste especially sweet! Research has proven that mosquitoes can rapidly learn and remember the smells of hosts, and that’s what makes some people more preferable than others. Bright Side found 8 natural yet super effective remedies to keep mosquitoes away from your body. Try them instead of reaching for more chemical sprays! Did you know, for example, that mosquitoes just hate garlic smell? So one of the easiest ways to make sure that mosquitoes will never fly in your direction is to eat some garlic! When you consume at least one clove, garlic oil releases from your pores, creating a powerful barrier between your skin and mosquitoes. TIMESTAMPS: Lavender oil 1:00 Tea tree oil 2:02 Vanilla 2:58 Black pepper 3:59 Apple cider vinegar 4:52 Soapy water 6:03 Mint 6:50 Garlic 7:53 #mosquitoes #keepmosquitoesaway #naturalremedies Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - If you have mosquitoes at home, spray lavender oil in your bedroom or use any lavender-scented room freshener you can find. - A study that was published in the Australian Journal of Entomology in 2010 showed that repellents which contain tea tree oil are exceptionally effective against mosquitoes. - Even though the smell of vanilla is really pleasant to us, mosquitoes can't stand it. So, as always, all you have to do is make an all-natural vanilla spray. - Black pepper protects your body from mosquitoes, flies, and other insects thanks to something called picaridin. - Put water and apple cider vinegar in equal proportions in your spray bottle, spray on places where insects normally gather, and wait for the results. - Whether you’re having a picnic outside or just want to get the mosquitoes out of your house for good, place a plate with soapy water nearby. After a few minutes, you'll notice mosquitoes getting trapped in the bubbles and drowning. - Growing some mint in your garden can also be a good solution against mosquitoes, while also providing you with a healthy natural addition to your diet. - If you don’t want to eat the stuff, you can also rub some garlic-scented lotion on your skin or use a garlic spray on your body, your home, or your yard. How I Discovered I Had Natural Curl | How To

05:31
Hey guys! I am SO excited about this tutorial! I have done so much research and have been doing this style for months with trial and error and I finally got it just how I like it and wanted to share my steps with you guys. I hope it helps you bring out any natural wave you have in your hair too. Thanks so much for watching! :) TIP: This can also be done WITHOUT scrunching the hair on top of the head (I like it doing it because it creates more volume and adds a little more defined curl) but if you prefer to skip that part you totally can. I've done it this way as well and have gotten very similar end results. Links: Shampoo - https://amzn.to/2JHi8el Conditioner - https://amzn.to/2qwPowk DevaCurl - https://amzn.to/2Rxh9Am L.A. Transfer Learning for Natural Language Processing (NLP)

01:53
Transfer Learning to jumpstart your NLP tasks   https://www.cloudera.com/products/fast-forward-labs-research.html Cloudera Fast Forward Labs’ latest applied machine learning research report is about boosting natural language processing (NLP) with transfer learning. Organizations large and small have volumes of valuable data stored as free-form text yet the scale of data combined with the complexities of language processing makes using it to drive insight and automation a challenge. While deep learning applied to NLP produces models powerful enough to automatically answer questions, translate languages, detect emotion, and even generate human-like language, these models are complex and unwieldy, making them too costly to build and incorporate into real-world systems without vast data, skilled human experts, and expensive infrastructure. This report introduces transfer learning, a method of training models that solves these problems through knowledge reuse. You’ll see how deep learning for NLP and transfer learning are combined to improve the accuracy and robustness of models and reduce the cost of using advanced techniques, making NLP more practical, accessible and powerful than ever before.

With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. Scientific Research on Indian Cow Products

04:23
Indian cow breeds possess a rich A2 allele gene that provides a better and healthier quality of milk than foreign breeds, according to a new study. “The A2 allele gene in Indian milk breeds of cows are 100 per cent, while in foreign breeds, it is around 60 per cent,” scientists of the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) have said in a report. Furthermore the frequency of this allele in Indian milk breeds is 1.0 (100 per cent), while in exotic breeds, it has been reported to be nearly 0.6 (60 per cent) or less, they added. Set up in 1984, NBAGR is an arm of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and is based in Karnal, Haryana. The finding was arrived at after screening the status of the A2 allele of the beta casein gene in indigenous cows like Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Rathi and Gir etc, NBAGR Director B K Joshi said. “The counter allele to A2 is A1, which is considered to be associated with diabetic, obesity, cardiovascular diseases etc,” added Joshi. “Although the foreign breeds of cows produce more milk than Indian varieties, but due to more concentration of A1 gene in those breeds, the milk is of low quality,” the report said, adding that the long-term use of such milk may cause several health disorders. The scientists scanned 22 breeds of Indian cows and found that in five milk yielding Indian cows — Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Rathi and Gir — the status of the A2 allele was 100 per cent, while in other Indian breeds used for farming, its status was around 94 per cent, Joshi added. The scientists also scanned the status of this allele in the two most popular foreign breeds in India, Holstein Friesian and Jersey, in which the status of the A2 allele was 60 per cent only. Our ongoing project increases navigability and distribution of health research using Google’s Natural Language API. Our Machine Learning process for taxonomy delivered meaningful improvement for executives and policy makers looking to read breaking analysis. Healthcare transformation in the 21st century should be driven by technological convergence. There is a growing gap between theoretical solutions and practical results, however, as we lag behind other industries due to complexity, regulation, and security requirements unique to health. This small example shows the today potential for creativity in the application of Artificial Intelligence within the healthcare industry without compromising regulatory compliance.
