A few years ago, if you were waiting overnight outside an Apple Store ahead of a new product launch, you just might have found Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sitting next to you on the sidewalk. This wasn't a marketing stunt by Apple. Wozniak really enjoyed being part of an Apple event with other fans. In an interview with Business Insider, Wozniak compared the night before an Apple release to waiting in line for concert tickets, which he often did when he was younger. Sure, as an Apple co-founder he could have probably pulled strings to get the new iPhone, but he says he's "just not a favor asker." Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Of all the Apple products that had lines — the earlier iPhones, the earlier iPads, yes I always waited in line overnight. Something inspiring in me, something said, “This is a big, important deal.” I want to be a part of it, just like you want to be a part of a huge festival, you know Coachella maybe. This is going to be an inspiring, great time in my life. That’s how I thought about it, it was just like waiting overnight to get tickets to an important concert. The earliest I've gotten in line for an Apple product is generally, close to 24 hours in advance. Coming by maybe in the morning to noon time and then sitting out all night long till the store opens at whatever 8 in the morning. When I'm waiting in line for products, of course I'm very anxious inside and I feel all the adrenaline flowing. But I still have to keep up with my email coming in on my computer. Usually I'm sitting in a chair on my computer watching the new Apple product being opened in New Zealand. And then I'm watching it in Australia. Then I'm watching eventually in Tokyo and then London. And by the time it gets to California 17 hours later, it's sort of like the whole thing already happened. The glamour of being first already happened. I don't really do it anymore. Pretty much just know the products are coming out and they're not going to be available on day one, especially the version I want. So I just order it online and accept it. I got a lot more patient now. As an Apple founder I wouldn't try to get one that way, because before Apple, I had my own philosophical code. I try to be like normal people, do it the same way everyone else does. Get in line, buy it, pay full price. I'm sure I could probably ask and get some favors, but I'm just not a favor asker. There were times — like the first iPhone, Steve Jobs actually sent me one. And there were other computers he would send me one, but not asked for. I buy most of the important Apple products because technology is my excitement in life, you know, just like movies and popular culture. These are all things, oh my gosh I want to be a part of it. Would you miss the next “Star Wars” movie? You know, some people wouldn't miss it. It’s that deep a part of their life.

Apple has almost always had a reputation of pricing their products quite a bit higher than their competition, and this premium cost is commonly referred to as the Apple Tax. And it can be traced as far back as the original iPod in 2001, which had a starting price of $399, or about $570 adjusted for inflation. And when compared to other hard drive-based music players that sold for around $200, the iPod’s price was staggering. And when the iPhone was released in 2007, one of its biggest criticisms was its price, coming in at $499, or about $600 today, and that was with a two-year contract. And don’t forget the MacBook Air, which debuted with a $1,800 price tag. And that got you just 64GB of solid state storage. So the Apple tax is nothing new to longtime Apple users, but there has been an unusual trend upward in almost all Apple’s product categories over the past few years. And I think there’s more to that story than the Apple tax can account for.

Apple’s line of printers were made through the 1980s and 1990s, and many people are unfamiliar with the fact that Apple even had printers because they’ve been out of the printing business for almost two decades. They stopped releasing new printers in 1996, when Steve Jobs returned to the company. And then all of Apple’s printers were eventually discontinued in 1999. Now you may assume that because Apple stopped selling their printers, they must’ve had poor sales. But that wasn’t the case, Apple had successfully sold printers on the market for 20 years and all of a sudden they decided to end the line. So to figure out why Apple made this move, we need to go back to 1980, when their first model of printer was released. While many people overlook this part of Apple’s history, the company’s legacy in the printing business is well worth remembering. Since the decision to cut printers from their product line may have saved Apple from a financial disaster and huge revenue losses, but we’ll get into that later after we explore their best and worst printer models.

One of Apple's biggest competitors in the laptop space is arguably Microsoft, with its line of portable, productivity-focused Surface Book machines. Microsoft in November released its newest product, the Surface Book 2, a 2-in-1 PC that has quite a few selling points to entice Apple customers. In our latest YouTube video, we took a look at the 15-inch Surface Book 2 and compared it to the 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro across a number of categories including build quality and design, key features, and overall usage experience for someone in the Apple ecosystem. 5 Reasons I Love and Hate Apple Apple Products are Great But I Don't Love Them Unconditionally Here are 5 Reasons I Love Apple and Hate Apple... My love of Apple Products is balanced by my frustration with Apple over some of its abandonment of Creatives in favor of the larger Consumer Market. Those of us who have used Apple for Creativity, for Photography, Film, and Music have been thrown under the bus in favor of people who want to look at pictures, watch movies and listen to music. Apple Abandoned Creatives, there is really no other way to put it. Yet creative professionals love apple and defend them against legitimate criticism. My criticism of Apple is actually as a fan of the products. I'm not an Apple Fanboy, I'm an Apple Fan who feels like Apple abandoned creatives like me completely instead of just expanding to appeal to consumers. Apple discontinued Aperture. Apple mismanaged Final Pro X as an upgrade and turned it into "iMovie Pro". Apple through artist under the bus with Apple Music until Taylor Swift and her Label spoke up and called them out. Apple hasn't done significant updates and support for Logic Pro or Garage Band. These things happened. And that is why I feel Apple abandoned creatives for a cash grab from pure consumers. All of their innovation and product development over the past few years has been centered around consumers in the broad market, and not us creatives who saw them through the hard times and were loyal. The iPhone and iPad have had continues updates and new features. But the Mac Pro hasn't seen a product update since 2013 and is still at the same price point and marketed against new competing technology. The Mac Pro in that regard lives up to its unfortunate nick-name "trash can", even though it is a sleek impressive machine the Mac Pro is outdated and not truly upgradeable. The iPhone SE was introduced practically to recycle the iPhone 5s body with iPhone 6s features. I'm all for Apple Renew but this phone wasn't really necessary or groundbreaking. The resources put into the iPhone SE could have been put towards refreshing a different Apple Product Line, like the Mac Pro. Speaking of Apple Renew, I love that program and the green environmental initiatives Apple is taking. I also feel that the iPad Pro should have had the Mac OSX operating system, come with a keyboard and the Apple pencil should have been included for the price. How can you call it an iPad Pro and try to compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro when you're not bringing everything in your arsenal to the table. Also the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil don't let you flip the Pencil to erase, when ironically the Microsoft Surface Pen does exactly that. The iPad Pro is a cool device and I'm buying one, but it didn't live up to my expectations from a company that touts user experience as a virtue of its products acts so superior. The Macbook Pro is long overdue for and update. The Macbook Pro product line doesn't even have the latest generation processors and the Macbook Pro still doesn't have touch-screen in a world where nearly all their competitors do. We may see a Macbook Pro with touch-screen in 2017 now that there is the Apple Pencil as a standalone product. Also the Macbook, really? A new rumor suggests that Apple will release two new Apple Watch models this year. Unsurprisingly, the rumor states that Apple will release the Apple Watch 2 featuring a faster processor, better water-proofing, longer battery life, GPS, and a barometer. However, there will also allegedly be an improved original Apple Watch, also with a faster processor and improved water proofing. At first this seems crazy. However, after thinking about it on my drive back from the office, it actually makes a lot of sense to me. By releasing an improved, lower price original Apple Watch, Apple can revamp the entire product line and eliminate many of the major problems that haunted Apple's original smartwatch (i.e. speed). Apple won't do this every release cycle, but doing so this fall will enable Apple to market an incredible Apple Watch product line going into the holiday season. What do you think about a potential double release of Apple Watches this year? I'd love to hear your feedback. Apple significantly expanded its reach Monday, adding a new category - wearable tech - to its product line-up. Whether Apple shakes up the consumer market the way it did with its earlier smartphone and tech products remains to be seen. But either way, business experts say Apple is providing a road map for businesses on how to stay relevant. Business reporter Mil Arcega has more. Today we’re going to explore the history of the iMac. How it was developed, why it represented the beginning of a new era at Apple, and how it saved the company from bankruptcy. the iMacs story begins with Steve Jobs return to Apple in May 1996. He realized Apple still had a lot of talented people, but their talents weren’t being utilized effectively. The Macintosh product lineup was so complex that retail workers were using flowcharts to get a better understanding of each model. Jobs figured that if their own employees couldn’t figure out the product lineup, then their customers certainly couldn’t either. To remedy this, Jobs told the designers that Apple would be putting all its energies behind just four products; a consumer desktop, pro desktop, consumer notebook, and pro notebook. And the first model they would begin working on was the consumer desktop computer.

Apple revamps computer line with new MacBook Pro Apple Inc unveiled a revamped MacBook Pro on Thursday, adding a fingerprint reader, replacing function keys with a small touch screen and raising prices by several hundred dollars. The first redesign in several years is a sign Apple still sees a role for the product that launched the company, even though its iPhone has become the flagship product. Ben Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies, described the changes as "important incremental upgrades" which would convince people with old Macs to trade up to the smaller, faster model. But he noted that Microsoft Corp’s competing Surface notebook allowed touch on its main screen. "A lot of people spend a lot of time on these machines. The key for them is incremental innovations that make their job easier," said Bajarin. "That’s value." The new pricing is roughly line with expectations, Bajarin said, but it surprised some. On Twitter, many potential buyers were underwhelmed by the new features and posted pictures of people crying about the new prices. Others tweeted that they hoped for more products. Apple shares fell 1.2 percent. BUTTONS AS SCREENS Customers will be able to access the new machines with Touch ID, the fingerprint reader also used on iPhones, and use the touch screen bar of keys, called the Touch Bar, to control programs on the main screen. The buttons, which change depending on what programs the user is running, effectively act as a second screen, showing older versions of a picture being edited, for example. Other computer makers have chosen to use touch screens for the main display screen, including Microsoft's first-ever desktop and a revamped Surface Book laptop, launched on Wednesday. The MacBook Pro with Touch ID, Touch Bar and a 13-inch screen will start at $1,799, compared with $1,299 for the previous 13-inch product. Apple also will offer a 13-inch MacBook Pro without the Touch ID and Touch Bar for $1,499. The 15-inch notebook will start at $2,399, compared with $1,999 for the previous version. The Mac line accounted for about 11 percent of Apple sales in the just-finished fiscal year, with the number of machines sold down by 10 percent to 18.5 million. Apple has steadily upgraded components to the MacBook Pro, but the overall form has changed little, and PC Week described the unit being replaced as a "fossil" which had not had a major design change since 2013. Apple also announced a new TV App that would work on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad products, in an effort to make it easier to tune into programs across devices. The company also said that it would integrate Twitter Inc feeds into live sports games on Apple TV, adding a social element to the product. Susbcribe my channel for more latest trending news.

In the late 1990s Apple was trimming its product line from the bewildering variety of intersecting Performa, Quadra, LC, Power Macintosh and PowerBook models to a simplified "four box" strategy: desktop and portable computers, each in both consumer and professional models. Three boxes of this strategy were already in place: The newly introduced iMac was the consumer desktop, the Blue and White G3 filled the professional desktop box, and the PowerBook line served as the professional portable line. This left only the consumer portable space empty, leading to much rumor on the Internet of potential designs and features. Putting an end to this speculation, Steve Jobs unveiled the iBook G3 during the keynote presentation of Macworld Conference & Expo, New York City on July 21, 1999. The design was clearly influenced by Apple's consumer desktop, the iMac. In fact, the marketing slogan was "iMac to go". The clamshell design also echoed the eMate 300. Apple continued its trend of using transparent colored plastics for the shell, and releasing a product in multiple colors. Like the iMac, the iBook G3 had a PowerPC G3 CPU, and no legacy Apple interfaces. USB,Ethernet, modem ports and an optical drive were standard. The ports were left uncovered along the left side: a cover was thought to be fragile and unnecessary with the iBook's new interfaces, which lacked the exposed pins of earlier connectors. When the lid was closed, the hinge kept it firmly shut, so there was no need for a latch on the screen. The hinge included an integrated carrying handle. Additional power connectors on the bottom surface allowed multiple iBook G3s to be charged on a custom-made rack. The iBook G3 was the first Mac to use Apple's new "Unified Logic Board Architecture", which condensed all of the machine's core features into two chips, and added AGP and Ultra DMA support. The iBook was the first mainstream computer designed and sold with integrated wireless networking. On the iBook's introduction, Phil Schiller, Apple's VP of Marketing, held an iBook while jumping off a height as data from the computer was transferred to another in order to demonstrate the wireless networking capability. The display bezel contained the wireless antenna, which attached to an optional internal wireless card. Lucent helped create this wireless capability which established the industry standard. Apple released the AirPort Wireless Base Station at the same time. There was heated debate over many things such as the aesthetics, features, weight, performance, and pricing. To provide good impact protection, the iBook was larger and heftier than the PowerBook of the time, and yet had lower specifications. Standard features like PC card slots were absent. Speculated features such as touch-screens and an ultra-long battery life were absent. The iBook gained the label "Barbie's toilet seat", due to the distinctive design.Nevertheless, this same design made the iBook G3 unmistakable in movies and television shows. The iBook was a commercial success. The line continually received processor, memory, hard disk upgrades, and new colors. FireWire and video out were later added. The design was discontinued in May 2001, in favor of the new "Dual USB" iBooks. Compared to follow-up iBook and PowerBook notebook computers, the Clamshell iBook proved to be the more reliable model. The original iBook is on exhibition at the London Design Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery.Vestiges of design ideas first adopted in the iBook G3 can still be seen today: moving interface ports from the back to the sides and leaving them uncovered, omitting a latch for the computer's lid and providing color options and an eye-catching design intended to be seen with the computer open.

Apple's long awaited smartwatch, dubbed iWatch, could launch alongside the iPhone 6 today. We investigate the latest analysis, evidence and rumours to bring you our predictions of the iWatch release date, price, specs and features. For iWatch rivals, see: the best smartwatches of 2014. Apple iWatch release date: When is the iWatch coming out? On 28 August, Apple sent out press invitations to a 9 September special event, which we expect will see the unveiling of the iPhone 6 and many believe will also give us our first look at the rumoured iWatch. Our editors will be reporting live from the event - see How to watch the iPhone 6 launch live and tune into our live coverage at New iPhone 6 live blog: Plus 2014 Apple iPhone Air, iOS 8, iWatch launch as it happens. We've been putting our money on a Q3 iWatch launch since early this year - that's Autumn 2014 for you humans out there. Apple Insider has reporting this as fact based on a research note written by trusted analyst KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and seems to confirm heavy industry rumours. "We believe the rumored iWatch will be Apple's most important product this year, carrying much more weight than iPhone 6," Kuo writes, adding, "as market feedback for the product should reveal whether Apple still has the ability to continue making game-changing products with Tim Cook at the helm." Apple has in recent years settled in to a rhythm of updating its iPhones and iPads in two separate events in the autumn each year. We'd expect the iWatch launch to coincide with the iPhone 6 launch, which we now know is happening on 9 September. This gets the iWatch out in time for the all-important Thanksgiving/Christmas shopping season. There was an outside chance that Apple will launch the iWatch at WWDC 2014, where iOS 8 was announced. However, there was no wearable iWatch unveiled in San Francisco this year. Kuo's latest report states that Apple iWatch will enter mass-production in November, later than the original September prediction. "We have pushed back our estimated time of iWatch mass production from late-September to mid-/ late- November. We also lower our forecast of iWatch 2014 shipments by 40% to 3mn units," wrote Kuo putting it down to more complex hardware and software engineering. This could still be true, as despite many reports suggesting a 9 September unveiling, it's believed that the iWatch won't actually be available to buy for some time after that. Trusted source Re/Code has cited its own sources in a report that claims the iWatch is "not shipping any time soon." It's possible we may have to wait until early 2015! We'll update this article as we know more. iWatch concept at top by Martin Hajek. Will Apple launch an iWatch? Will the iWatch succeed? There's been a lot of speculation about Apple's intention with regard to wearable tech. Much of it wrong-headed and hopeful. But the fact is that all the usual tell-tale signs are there for a major new product line from Apple. Indeed, in May 2013, Apple CEO Tim Cook told attendees at All Things D that "the wrist is interesting". That in itself doesn't mean much, but the level of rumours springing from usually reliable sources tells us that Apple will launch an iWatch, and it will be this year. That's not the only time Apple has hinted at an iWatch, either. Cook has hinted on multiple occasions that Apple is working on a new product line. He's spoken about "new product categories" that the company is working on behind the scenes, and has said that Apple aims to be the best, not the first, with everything it makes. Apple certainly wouldn't be the first company to launch a smartwatch. In fact, the wearable tech market has been flooded with new smartwatches from the likes of Samsung, Sony, Pebble, LG and more already this year. If you're still not convinced, there are two more pieces of evidence that we think my sway you. The first is that Apple actually owns the rights to the iWatch name in several countries, and the second is that there's an Apple patent that describes a wearable computer with a flexible display that can snap around the wrist to become a smartwatch. Whether the iWatch will be a success is another matter. Much analysis points at the market-making successes of the iPod, iPhone and the iPad. But in each case there was an established need, and a nascent market. Apple simply made much better products than those that had gone before. It's also worth pointing out that success is relative. By any metric the iPod, iPhone and iPad are hugely successful product lines. But their levels of success differ markedly: at its peak more than 50 million iPods were being sold each year. By contrast 70 million iPads were sold in 2013, and more than 116 million iPhones. Wearable tech is clearly a growth market, but whether it can hit any of those figures remains to be seen.
