25 AMAZING PICTURES OF NEW YORK CITY IN THE LATE 1970S AND EARLY 1980S

04:46
Amazing Pictures of New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s New York City in the late 1970s and early 80s could best be described using Charles Dickens’ phrase “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Meryl Meisler’s photographs documented it with compassion and humor. As the city neared bankruptcy, crime rates rose, epidemics of arson and crack made the Big Apple seem like it was rotting to the core. In the midst of it all, a scintillating groundbreaking disco nightlife culture arose. Crossing the most exclusive clubs’ velvet gates, Meryl danced and photographed with her medium format camera. 1. Ryan McGinley by THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE

03:10
Ryan McGinley New Jersey-born Ryan McGinley studied graphic design at New York's Parsons School of Visual Arts. In 1999 he sent 100 magazine editors and artists he admired a 50-page book of photographs he had produced on his desktop computer entitled The Kids Are Alright. The book consisted of exuberantly bacchanalian images of his friends in New York City. In these images, fellow artists like Hannah Liden, Dan Colen, Dash Snow and Emily Sundblad masturbate, roll joints, tag walls, and scamper naked in the woods. Like Nan Goldin and Larry Clark, McGinley shot intimate portraits of friends far on the margins of social acceptability. But the humanity and poetry of his predecessors' work came from the pathos, pain and gallows-humor in their images, whereas the grittiness in McGinley's photographs glowed with the exuberant bliss of being young, hot and acting out. The day that Index magazine received the book, they called McGinley to fly to Berlin and shoot for editorial. In 2003, McGinley was the youngest artist (at age 26) to exhibit for a solo show in the Whitney Museum of Art. The tone of the 20 large-scale color prints presented in the show, as part of the Whitney's 'First Exposure' series showcasing emerging photographers, was described by Holland Cotter in a New York Times review as 'relaxed and playful, as if the world were on recess'. In an art world and mass culture pathologically obsessed with youth, McGinley's well-crafted and carefully selected images actually did what photography claims to do - they captured fleeting moments. His models were not professional kids paid to produce some simulacrum of youthful cool. Instead, they were actually members of that blessed demographic, and so was he.

♫ John Lennon and Yoko Ono historic photo session for The New York Times, 1980

📷 John Lennon and Yoko Ono historic photo session for The New York Times Jack Mitchell photographed John Lennon and Yoko Ono on November 2, 1980 – and it turned out to be a historic session. The assignment was for The New York Times to illustrate a feature article about the Lennon’s new album “Double Fantasy”. It was the first time in five years that Lennon had been photographed professionally, and as it turned out, the last comprehensive photo session of his life. Tragically, just weeks later Lennon was murdered. Within hours Mitchell was inundated with picture requests. His photos from the session ran worldwide and his color photograph on the cover of People magazine's memorial issue became the top seller of that magazine until their 1997 Princess Diana memorial issue ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ If you like my channel and you want it to develop further, I will be happy with any financial help. 5 STREET PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS WHEN TRAVELLING TO NEW YORK CITY

09:43
This video goes through 5 great hacks to get better street photography in New York city. I recently went to New York city with my family. It has now become a ritual for us. I love to go there and take advantage of the fact that I have a daughter and a wife that are addicted to shopping in the big city. When they go on their runs I do two things; shop at B and H photo and go to do even more street photography. I have now done this routine about 6 times and it has led me to a couple of good pointers for photographers who are either shy or on the run. So here are a couple of pointers for you for street photography in the big apple. 1 ) Don't be ashamed of being a typical tourist I always get this feeling that I should be shooting elsewhere than Time Square and the 9/11 memorial. I remember that when I started the whole street photography thing, I felt that these places were not legit. But I now realize that street has a great deal to do with people and a little bit less to do with the place that they are taken. So what better place to take pictures than the place where the people are. Photography also has a lot to do with the story you tell and the angle you use to tell it. 2) Scout with the tacky tourbus. Either at Times Square or around that area, there are always a bunch of vendors selling you the tour of the city. This involves a visual and audio tour in those double decker busses where the top half is cut off. These buses offer a downtown package, uptown package or even an unlimited package where you can spend the day hopping on and off buses to see what you want to see. Haggle yourself a tour. Once you get over the general touristy aspect, you will discover nooks and crannies you never thought existed in the city. Things that even native New Yorkers do not know. You will also get a birds eye view of the city and hence, great angles for actual photography. The tour allows you a mental note of what to do for the rest of the day as well. New York is an overload of history, the tourbus really allows by far the fastest and most efficient way to take the city in. 3) Walk or bike or subway to get around Once you do scout and find out where you want to go to shoot, either walk or bike or subway. Why? Because this gives you a great picture taking advantage. Getting the in betweens. I do not know how many times I was walking to one place and just saw a shot and started to shoot. Sometimes I get more shots on the journey there than I do at the actual spot I wanted to shoot. Subway: Get the all you can eat day pass and a map. Don't worry about getting lost as well. It is all part of the fun Walk: Make sure you have a pair of fantastic walking shoes and hydrate. Bike: Do not bring a bike there. Use the city bikes that are stationed all around the city. Learn the rules about renting those bikes before you fly to New York. It can be a bit confusing whan you are at the pay station 4) Time is limited but you still should not rush Take note of where you go the first time you visit New York and try to switch it up the next time you go. This point is important because if you walk into that city thinking that you will get everything it has to offer you will be in for a pretty terrible surprise. If you go there with that attitude you will be very rushed and a rushed photographer is a bad photographer in my humble opinion. 5) Look outside of your lens at times to take in what you see. My biggest mistake as a beginner photographer was to always want to make a record of what I saw without seeing it. Part of the fun of photography is to have a story about what is in the shot. Take the time to put the camera down once in a while take it all in. Now for the gearheads out there All my shots were taken with the Fujifilm X-T20 and the 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0. I also used the Fujifilm 35mm f/2.0 fixed focal for that sharper even more dramatic look. I am a big fan of both of these lenses in every way. Just love using these lenses. I will have a video on some of the bad points of the X-T20 soon. I just find that determining focus points and the miniscule EVF are a pain. Although they can be overlooked, I wish that I had a joystick. But overall I love the images out of the X-T20 and these lenses. Interview with photographer Dan Winters

04:31
At 25 years old, Dan Winters moved from his home state of California to New York. During these personally and artistically formative years, Winters took in the city which has inspired and captivated so many artists who came before him. The photographs that comprise The Grey Ghost include the timeless icons of the city that we all know well, including the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. However even at a young age, Winters’ signature approach is palpable, and the images that emerge are technical, delicate, and surprising despite our familiarity with these landmarks. Among the icons of the city, Winters captures the fleeting, beautiful, and strange happenings one experiences on the streets of New York. The serendipitous moments that only become visible to those comfortable with a city, when the bustle and noise begin to fade and one can truly begin to see what makes the city so remarkable. The Grey Ghost becomes an ode to the city-as-muse, one that eternally captivates and inspires. Winters notes in his introduction to The Grey Ghost, “It is a city unlike any I have known. One in which sidewalks are a great equalizer and both kings and peasants share the pavement in a choreographed, democratic ballet…The myriad smells, hot flashes, chaos, and drone of car horns overcame me. This grand symphony occurs with such frequency and persistence, it eventually becomes a shrill and continuous presence... As time passed I became a fragment of the organism, as vital a piece that any one person can occupy. The metamorphosis was underway and my deep love for one of the world's most spirited and influential of places began to blossom.” Dan Winters is an award-winning photographer based in Austin, Texas and Los Angeles. He is a regular contributor for WIRED, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, TIME, and many other national and international publications. Winters’s photographs are included in the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, and the Wittliff Collection at Texas State University in San Marcos. His previous books include, Road to Seeing (2014), Last Launch: Discovery, Endeavor, Atlantis (2012), Dan Winters’s America: Icons and Ingenuity (2012), and Periodical Photographs (2009).

http://Twitter.com/ClevverTV - Follow Us! Taylor Swift is a full-fledged fashionista. We've got a look at her latest pics from the New York Times Style Magazine-you won't wanna miss this-keep watching. Hi style lovers-I'm Joslyn Davis for ClevverTV-with more scoop on Taylor Swift. This young lady is talented, sweet, and as shown by her New York TImes Style Magazine pics-if the whole singing thing doesn't work out-she could easily have a career in the world of high fashion. The shoot shows off Taylor in a variety of funky, yet girly looks. She is totally pulling off the bright red lips, blue eye shadow, and fun hair bows. It's also interesting to see Swift with straight hair-since her signature look is curly. And of course everyone is loving the article that's attached to these pictures. Tay talks about her upcoming movie, how Leanne Rimes influenced her, and her love of music. She also tells a fun story about how her parents realized she had a gift for music after taking her to see "The Little Mermaid." On the way home from the movie theater, little Taylor sat in the back seat singing all the words to the songs. Her parents were completely baffled since their daughter had only seen the film once and yet somehow she still remembered all the words. This cover is yet another milestone for Taylor Swift. She's had quite the magical year-sweeping the CMAs and AMAs. She's also nominated for several Grammy's and then she's allegedly dating one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood-Taylor Lautner. How could life possibly get any better for Swift???? Hit the comments section to let us know how much your loving Taylor's stylish shots! And thanks for hanging out with us right here at ClevverTV-I'm Joslyn Davis-see you next time!

STEPHEN WILKES : DAY TO NIGHT

06:13
Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Peter Fetterman Gallery is pleased to present Day to Night, the acclaimed global series from American photographer Stephen Wilkes. The exhibition includes a curated selection of large-scale color prints from the project and the exhibition debut of several new works created this year. Day to Night is an ongoing global photography project that visually narrates the events and human activity of an entire day using a uniquely innovative photographic process. The images are created by photographing from one camera angle for up to 15 hours, continually observing and capturing thousands of specific moments throughout the day and night in some of the world’s most famed locations. While photographing, Wilkes is observing the view, watching for spontaneous events occurring in the scene and narrating a visual story as the hours goes by. A select group of these images are then painstakingly blended into one seamless photograph over several months, capturing the changing of time within a single frame. Equal parts documentary street photography and architectural landscapes, the images in Day to Night appear aesthetically surreal while maintaining an honest representation of the cultural influence of people in their urban environments. Earlier works in the project show the day’s transition at iconic locations in Manhattan including Times Square, the Flat Iron Building, and Central Park. Wilkes says, “I discovered that the photographs began to highlight a form of emergent behavior within the daily life of the city. Studying the communication between pedestrians on sidewalks, cars and cabs on the street, these individual elements become complex life forms as they flow together.” As Wilkes further developed and focused his process, later images such as Jerusalem (2012) and Presidential Inauguration, Washington D.C. (2013) include thousands of people shown in the position they were at during various times of day while maintaining a seamless transition of changing light. High-traffic scenes like in Santa Monica Pier (2013) and Union Square (2014) keep the viewer engaged with countless narratives of people embracing, playing sports, sun-bathing, or hailing a cab. New pieces debuting in the exhibition include Tunnel View, Yosemite (2014) and Eiffel Tower, Paris (2014) as well as works from New York City, Israel, and London. Throughout the history of photography, there have been artists such as Eadweard Muybridge, Berenice Abbott, and Harold Edgerton, whose processes used technology to affect the possibilities of what a single image could convey. Stephen Wilkes is taking the concept of time and changing the way we look at a single still image, fusing hundreds of moments into one seamless scene, marking a new step in the ever-evolving medium of fine art photography. Beyond the narrative of light, Wilkes utilizes customized technology to achieve large-scale prints of breathtaking clarity and detail. The Day to Night series has been featured in TIME Magazine, The New York Daily News, CBS Sunday Morning, The Telegraph UK, and countless online blogs and publications. Stephen Wilkes (b. 1957) was educated at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and featured in numerous leading publications including The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Time, among many others. Awards and honors include the Adobe Breakthrough Photography Award, the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography, Photographer of the Year from Adweek Magazine, Fine Art Photographer of the Year 2004 Lucie Award, and the Epson Creativity Award. Wilkes’ work is in the permanent collection of the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Dow Jones collection, James A. Michener Art Museum, Snite Museum of Art, Jewish Museum of New York, Library of Congress and numerous private collections. Wilkes is based in Westport, CT. Mark Neville - Fancy Pictures

11:29
Fancy Pictures is the first commercially available book on the work of artist Mark Neville and surveys twelve years of his practice. Neville normally only disseminates his photo books (free) either to the communities he photographs, or to authorities and government policy makers in order to highlight social issues ranging from PTSD among veterans, to toxic waste disposal. You cannot buy his photo books in the shops. Fancy Pictures brings together six of Mark Neville’s socially engaged and intensely immersive projects from the last decade. Neville often pictures working communities in a collaborative process intended to be of direct, practical benefit to his subjects. The Port Glasgow Book Project (2004) is a book of his social documentary images of the Scottish town. Copies were given directly to all 8000 residents. A second Scottish project involved Neville living and working with the farming community of the Isle of Bute for eighteen months. Deeds Not Words (2011) focuses on Corby, an English town that suffered serious industrial pollution. Assembling photos and scientific data, he produced a book to be given free to the environmental health services department of each of the 433 local councils in the UK. In 2011 Neville spent three months working on the front line, Afghanistan, as an official war artist, making Helmand. Two projects for the USA are also included. Invited by the Andy Warhol Museum in 2012, Neville examined social divisions in Pittsburgh, and the photo-essay Here is London, commissioned by The New York Times Magazine, echoes the style of the celebrated photographers who documented the boom and bust of the 1970s and ’80s. “Fancy Pictures includes not just a key selection of the photographs from each project, and an extended interview with David Campany, but also a wealth of responses from the communities I worked with, who were both the recipients and the subjects of my books and projects, and the audiences for the work. By representing these projects in Fancy Pictures, I mean to open up a dialogue about the nature of audience and purpose in contemporary photographic practice." Mark Neville

Teju Cole Interview: My Looking Became Sacred

29:41
In this visually captivating video, the award-winning writer and photographer Teju Cole talks about – and reads from – his work of photography and texts, ‘Blind Spot’, which sprung from a period of semi-blindness: “So this is a book about the limitations of vision… when we’re looking at the world, there’s so much that we’re missing.” In the video, Cole shares how he woke up one morning and was blind in one eye, which after many examinations turned out to be caused by the ‘Big Blind Spot Syndrome’. He eventually recovered, but the experience changed how saw things as a photographer: “It really did become sacred. This intensity of looking at the world, and looking really closely, and photographing things that were not exciting, but things that were sort of washed with presence, with light.” This resulted in the project that was to become the book ‘Blind Spot’ (2017), in which the focus is on “the moment held in one’s attention.” “Photography is a different kind of miracle. You can’t go back and fix it. You can’t go back and do it. You have to take it in that moment, and then it emerges as a kind of collaboration with what is given by the world.” Cole, who is also a photography critic, wanted to avoid talking over the photos in the same way that he might write an essay about a set of pictures, but rather do something similar to voiceovers. There would be the image, the words and a third thing that could happen in the meeting between them: “So this book is sort of like 150 of these pairings around the idea of a blind spot. It’s not an explanation of the picture you’re looking at.” Moreover, Cole feels that “the human presence has a way of activating and foreclosing the possibilities”, whereas e.g. a room, a landscape or an object speak to us in a different way and leaves the meaning open for interpretation. Teju Cole is a writer and photographer, born in the U.S. in 1975 and raised in Nigeria. Cole is the author of several acclaimed books: His novella ‘Every Day is for the Thief’ (2007) was named book of the year by the New York Times, the Globe and Mail, NPR, and the Telegraph, and was shortlisted for the PEN/Open Book Award. His novel ‘Open City’ (2012) won the PEN/Hemingway Award, the New York City Book Award for Fiction, the Rosenthal Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Internationaler Literaturpreis. ‘Blind Spot’ (2017), a genre-crossing work of photography and texts, was named one of the best books of the year by Time Magazine. Cole is also the photography critic of the New York Times Magazine and the Gore Vidal Professor of the Practice of Creative Writing at Harvard University. His photography has been exhibited worldwide. For more see: http://www.tejucole.com/ Teju Cole was interviewed by Tonny Vorm in connection with the Louisiana Literature festival in Humlebæk, Denmark in August 2018.
