12 Shocking Facts About North Korean Soldiers

12:11
You’ve probably heard scary stories about the lives of the 25 million people in the reclusive and isolated nation of North Korea. If things are so rough for ordinary people, imagine how hard it must be for those serving in the military! Let’s see what it’s like to be a soldier in the North Korean army. Terrible nutrition, uniforms that injure soldiers, no way to escape and even worse conditions for women who suffer emotionally and physically - things get really tough and even more horrible you could imagine. TIMESTAMPS North Korea has compulsory military service for everyone. 0:52 Their paramilitary force includes teenagers. 1:57 The nutrition is so terrible that many soldiers can barely walk. 2:53 The uniforms injure the soldiers. 4:20 Things are even worse for female soldiers. 4:58 They have to throw landmines into the Yellow Sea. 6:20 Soldiers are brainwashed. 7:10 The military hospitals are dangerous. 8:08 Soldiers’ personalities change. 8:58 There’s no way to escape. 9:43 North Korea has the same number of submarines as the US. 10:40 They spent almost half of their budget on the army. 11:18 Music: Birds https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Preview photo credit: In this Saturday, May 17, 2014 photo, families of victims of an accident at an apartment construction site in Pyongyang, North Korea grieve during a gathering in the capital where senior officials apologized and took responsibility. SUMMARY -Every man must serve his country for 10 years, and every woman must serve for 7. Guys lucky enough to get into university and get a bachelor’s degree are allowed to serve for 5 years after graduation. -The Worker-Peasant Red Guards has somewhere between 1.5 and 6 million reservists. There are also teenage soldiers. -North Korean soldiers go through hard military training on raw corn kernels or a few potatoes a day. Many soldiers pass away from hunger and related health conditions. -According to former soldiers, the boots they wear in cold winter months are thin and stuffed with cotton for reasons of economy. -During their 7 years of compulsory military service, many women fall victim to sexual violence or humiliation. -Kim Jong-un forced his army to throw landmines into the Yellow Sea, which would resurface in South Korea and kill locals and tourists. -If some North Korean soldiers refuse to support violence, their army commanders are working to change that. They spend about 60% of their time learning the “right” ideology. -When interviewed, former soldiers described how they had to pay for their treatment, and, even when they did, all they got was alcohol rubbed on them. -Personalities often shift so greatly that there’s nothing that can bring things back to normal. -Kim Jong-un doesn’t approve of defection, especially when soldiers try to flee the country. Running away abroad often seems like the only route to safety. -The US has around 72 submarines, and North Korea has somewhere between 70 and 75. -Official government reports say 15.8%, but many experts agree it must be at least 38%. South Korea vs North Korea: vessels exchange fire near disputed sea border

00:55
South and North Korea exchanged fire Tuesday morning after a North Korean vessel crossed a disputed sea border off the peninsula’s west coast, near Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea. The exchange of fire took place at around 9:50 a.m. when the North Korean patrol boat crossed the so-called Northern Limit Line (NLL), which acts as the de facto sea border between the two countries. To force the vessel to retreat, the South Korean boat issued warning messages and fired a warning shot, the Korea Herald reported. Instead of backing down, the North Korean boat fired back which forced the South Korean vessel to open fire again. The exchange of gunfire lasted about 10 minutes in total. The North Korean vessel eventually made a retreat. The vessels did not sustain damage as neither side had aimed its shots, the Korea Herald reported. According to Reuters, North Korean vessels frequently cross the NLL, as the country refuses to recognize it as the maritime border. The NLL was drawn by the U.S.-led United Nations Command at the end of the Korean War that lasted from 1950 to 1953. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. West Sea Barrage (North Korean propaganda film) 1/3

09:59
The controversial Nampho Dam or West Sea Dam, also known as the West Sea Barrage, is a barrage located 15 km west of the special city of Nampho, North Korea. It is a huge, eight-kilometer-long system of dams, three lock chambers, and 36 sluices, allowing the passage of ships up to 50,000 tons. The dam closes the Taedong River off from the Yellow Sea. It was built from 1981 to 1986, with the resources of the whole country directed to this main construction project. The stated goal of the West Sea Dam was: The raising of the water level in the Taedong River and increased ship traffic; The prevention of seawater intrusion into the fresh water, thus solving the water supply problem; The irrigation of additional land, enlarging the arable territory of the region. Foreign critics claim raising the Taedong river level has led to the loss of valuable farmland, contributing to North Korean famine. The dam is considered a major accomplishment of North Korea. It is a commonly seen backdrop for North Korean television news broadcasts on KCNA, and is a stop for international tourists. The locks are at geographical coordinates 38°41′N 125°10′E. The dam's estimated total cost was $4 billion (US).

North Korea building artificial islands in Yellow sea, captured by satellite images - TomoNews

05:38
SOHAE, NORTH KOREA — U.S. officials say North Korea has been constructing several artificial islands for at least five years in the Yellow Sea near the City of Sohae. Satellite images reveal that five artificial islands for unknown purposes have been erected near Sohae, a known testing site for intercontinental ballistic missile technology. According to the Diplomat, three of the islands seem to have paved, rectangular slots which could be used to accommodate North Korean ballistic missile and its launcher. Other islands could be used to host underground missile silos, though it is not yet clear whether the islands can support such structures. Experts say the islands are more likely used for shorter-range missiles, such as Scuds, if they are indeed used for missile launchers. However, according to Ryan Barenklau, chief executive of Strategic Sentinel, a Washington-based intelligence firm, there isn’t enough information to determine the purpose of the islands so they may even be used for agriculture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. North Korea escape failure? Ghost ship with remains of 8 people found on Japanese coast - TomoNews

05:24
OGA, JAPAN — Eight bodies were found inside a ship found on a Japanese beach this week. The vessel was discovered in the Sea of Japan close to Oga on the Japanese coast. The Japanese Coast Guard believes it may have come from North Korea. A 68-year-old local resident alerted Japanese authorities to the ship on Monday morning, Kyodo News reported. She reportedly saw it drifting some 300 meters from shore. The coast guard found eight bodies inside the ship, as well as a cigarette packet bearing hangul writing. This leads police to suspect it is North Korean in origin, the Japanese Times reported, citing Kyodo News. The Japan Times reports parts of the bodies were skeletonized, suggesting that the ship was at sea for an extensive amount of time before being found. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Wideshot of the boat being salvaged STORYLINE: A South Korean navy patrol boat riddled with bullet holes was raised on Wednesday, eight weeks after it sank in a deadly gunbattle with North Korean warships near the peninsula's disputed western sea border. Navy divers fastened the 150-ton boat with steel chains and lifted it from the muddy bottom 25 metres (82 feet) underwater. The salvage crew hoisted it onto a barge as sea water gushed from hundreds of bullet holes and four soccer ball-sized holes created by the impact of North Korean shells. The "Chamsuri 357" will be carried to a navy base in Pyongtaek south of Seoul on Thursday. Military investigators will examine the boat to help reconstruct the June 29 naval clash that killed five South Korean sailors and injured 19 others. North Korea acknowledged an unspecified number of casualties. South and North Korea accused each other of triggering the 21-minute gunbattle. South Korea said North Korean navy ships entered its territorial waters and opened fire on its patrol boat. North Korea doesn't accept the U.N.-imposed sea borderline and accused Southern ships of intruding on its waters and initiating the clash. North Korea later expressed regret over the incident and proposed to resume talks with South Korea. Last week, Cabinet-level negotiators from the two Koreas held three days of talks in Seoul and agreed to resume discussions on a host of stalled economic and other exchanges. Officers from the U.S.-led U.N. Command and the North Korean military met at the border village of Panmunjom on Monday and discussed measures to prevent similar clashes in the future. The Koreas were divided in 1945. The U.N. Command oversees the 1953 armistice that ended the three-year Korean War. The United States keeps 37-thousand troops in the South as a deterrent against the North. HOW CHINA HAS USED THE NORTH KOREAN CRISIS TO FURTHER ITS CAUSE IN SOUTH CHINA SEA?

08:15
INTRODUCTION World’s and America’s focus has been on North Korea, and rightly so. Tensions over China's island-building in the South China Sea may have eased in the past year, but Beijing has kept busy. New satellite imagery shows China has built infrastructure covering 72 acres (28 hectares) in the Spratly and Paracel islands during 2017 to equip its larger outposts to be air and naval bases. The Washington-based Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative closely tracks developments in the South China Sea, where China and several Asian governments have conflicting territorial claims. It said on Thursday there has been construction of hangars, underground storage, missile shelters, radar arrays and other facilities. In this video, Defense Updates analyses HOW CHINA HAS USED THE NORTH KOREAN CRISIS TO FURTHER ITS CAUSE IN SOUTH CHINA SEA? BACKGROUND China’s sweeping claims of sovereignty over the sea have infuriated competing claimants Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines as well as Vietnam. United States, Japan, Australia and India favor freedom of navigation as it is a very important sea route with 5 trillion $ in trade, half of global merchant shipping and 1/2 of world’s oil shipment pass through it. The sea also has alleged 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. China embarked on its massive land-reclamation program in early 2014. South China Sea Arbitration, was an arbitration case brought by t Philippines against China The landmark decision rejected China’s assertion that it enjoys historical rights over a huge area of the South China Sea encompassed by a “nine-dash line.” China had argued that the tribunal had no jurisdiction in the matter and rejected the decision. Many complex disputes have been resolved with this type of arbitration including maritime boundaries. China’s outright rejection symbolizes its high handed behavior and utter disregard for international norms. CHINA’S STRATEGY China has tried to change the territorial status quo gradually, island-by-island instead of trying to capture in one go. For example, China first occupied the Paracel Islands in 1974 and then slowly expanded its presence southward by attacking Vietnam’s islands in the Spratly chain in the 1980s. This strategy known as salami slicing, aims for slow accumulation of small changes. STATUS The new construction activity comes as China joins what are likely to be protracted negotiations with Southeast Asian nations on a “ ode of conduct” for South China Sea. Tensions with the US on the issue have also eased, despite Washington's criticism of Beijing's conduct. The construction is the follow-up phase to a campaign of land reclamation that was completed by early 2016 in the Spratlys, an island chain where Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei also have claims. According to the Pentagon, China has added more than 3,200 acres (1,248 hectares) of land to the seven land features it occupies in the area. ANALYSIS Greg Poling, the initiative's director, said China had seized a diplomatic opening after the election of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who adopted a conciliatory stance toward Beijing over their territorial dispute. It's also been less of a focus for President Donald Trump's administration, preoccupied by North Korea's nuclear threat and trade disputes with China. "It's gotten off the front pages, but we shouldn't confuse that with a softening in China's pursuit of its goals. They are continuing all the construction they want,” Poling said. The most construction has been on Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratlys, including hangars alongside its 10,000-foot (3,000-meter) airstrip, underground structures likely intended to house munitions or other materiel, hardened shelters for missile platforms, and communication and radar facilities, the initiative said. CONCLUSION The United States does not claim territory in the South China Sea but has declared it has a national interest in ensuring that the territorial disputes there are resolved peacefully in accordance with international law and that freedom of navigation and overflight are guaranteed. China has opposed what it calls US meddling in an Asian dispute. It is the greatest of irony that even a communist nation Vietnam has sought support from capitalist America to counter belligerence and aggression from China which is a communist nation. Chinese recent activities have been such. China is embroiled in disputes on multiple fronts, latest being with India on Doklam plateau. America under Trump had already stepped up the game with increase in frequency of Freedom of Navigation Operations as well as initiating investigation in illegal trade practices of China. It remains to be seen how U.S can respond to China and North Korea at the same time. Audio by Scott Leffler — scottleffler.com

(THE 7 CHOICES) If you were living in North Korea right now - trying to survive on a diet of rats, grass, soil and tree bark, quenching your thirst by drinking out of mud puddles in the ground - what would you do? There's also the conceivable chance of being sent to a political prison camp for years on end just because you innocently thought out loud one day to a bunch of friends (North Korean propaganda is strong), where you are then beaten, tortured, and left so hungry that you are forced to dig and consume the grains out of faeces, or the maggots from dead bodies just so you have the energy to perhaps last one more day. You'd probably wanna escape. But how? The North Korean government in Pyongyang refuses to let its citizens leave, a clear violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, viewing North Korean defectors as traitorous criminals. Captured North Koreans would be subject to unimaginable torture and often public executions. If they are successful in their escape, then three to four generations of their family back home would be sent to North Korean prison camps to rot ....or worse. This is a strong deterrent. But this still doesn't stop desperate North Koreans from tempting fate. In this video, I'll go over the seven ways to escape the DPRK, including the most dangerous, the most unforgiving, the most unique, and the most unexpected. The North Korean border on the south side (ie. South Korean border / Korean DMZ) is the shortest distance to travel for safety and stability but as a result, the regime makes it dangerously hard. A North Korean escapee can be shot down by North Korean soldiers (border guards) or step on the many landmines in the area. The northern border to China has it's own set of challenges. Most North Korean refugees escape through this way, usually crossing the Tumen River border (like the famous North Korean defector Hyeonseo Lee). Once in China, the nightmare doesn't end there. There are also other, more unconventional ways you can try to escape such as through North Korean labor camps. Even if you make it to safety and resettle in a stable country, the North Korean regime will still try to hunt you down, so you're never truly safe. Especially if you're an outspoken critic or a threat to Kim Jong-un's power - just ask his half brother, Kim Jong-nam

South korea vs North korea: vessels exchange fire near disputed sea border

00:45

Fresh Fish Market in Busan, South Korea

Today I give you a walking tour of Busan's famed fish market known for its fresh seafood: Jagalchi Shijang (자갈치시장). It used to be outdoor, but upon the construction of the new building, vendors moved inside. Many stalls continue to set up outside, which I found to be a much more fun experience to venture through. Feel free to buy your raw fish on the first floor and enjoy it on the second floor where restaurants will set up side dishes. Otherwise you can purchase the fish directly from the restaurant. Wŏnsan (Korean pronunciation: [wʌn.san]) is a port city and naval base located in Kangwŏn Province, North Korea, along the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula, on the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the provincial capital. The port was opened by occupying Japanese forces in 1880. Before the 1950–1953 Korean War, it fell within the jurisdiction of the then South Hamgyŏng province, and during the war it was the location of the Blockade of Wŏnsan. The population of the city was estimated at 331,000 in 2000.[needs update] Notable people from Wŏnsan include Kim Ki Nam, diplomat and Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party. The city has several major factories. In 2013, it was announced that Wŏnsan would be converted into a summer destination with resorts and entertainment.[1]Beautiful places to travel to game : http://www.purposegames.com/game/beautiful-places-aroud-the-world-quizbeautiful, travel, travel destination, travel advice, skyline, famous buildings, street life nice city, tourist , toursm, beautiful, pictures, beautiful Name[edit] Wonsan has also been known as Yonghunghang, Yuan shan in China, Genzan or Gensan in Japan, and Port Lazareva or Port Lazareff in Russia. North Korean officer and citizen defect to South Korea via western sea border

00:36
북한군 장교 1명•주민 1명 서해상에서 귀순 A North Korean soldier and a citizen have defected to South Korea via the western sea border. Authorities say a small boat was detected north of Baengnyeong-do Island early Saturday morning and a patrol boat was immediately dispatched. A North Korean military officer and a citizen were aboard the boat and both expressed their wish to defect. This is the 14th time a North Korean soldier has fled to the South since the year 2000, but the first time in a decade for an officer-level soldier to do so. The two are being questioned on their reason for defecting. North Korea fires missiles into Sea of Japan

00:46
Originally published on March 17, 2014 North Korea fired 25 short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan on Sunday, March 16. The launch took place at 6:20 p.m. from the east coast of the Korean peninsula with the missiles fired toward the Sea of Japan, AFP reported. The missiles flew for 70km (45 miles) before falling into the sea. Eight more missiles were launched at 8:03 pm. Another seven followed, the last at 9:30 pm. According to Reuters, U.N. sanctions do not bar North Korea from launching short-range missile. Although such missiles tests, different from long-range rockets or nuclear tests, are considered routine, the U.S. State Department said it was closely monitoring the situation after the launches. South Korea has called the North's launches a "reckless provocation" and has increased vigilance following a series of rocket or missile launches in late February. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Report: North Korea fires two missiles into sea

00:52
North Korea has reportedly fired two missiles within hours into the sea off its eastern coast as tensions continue on the Korean Peninsula. A South Korean military official said the projectiles were apparently intermediate-range Musudan missiles. Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the move saying it cannot be tolerated. The Musudan has a range of about 3,000 kilometers, capable of targeting South Korea, Japan and the US base in Guam. Tensions between the two Koreas have escalated since the start of 2015 after the North’s nuclear test in January and its long-range rocket launch in February. Pyongyang says the missile launches are in response to provocative joint military drills by Washington and Seoul. North Korea fires several cruise missiles into East Sea: South Korean military

02:17
北, 원산서 지대함 순항미사일 수발 동해로 발사 It's becoming a weekly routine. North Korea fired more missiles into the East Sea. Most unfortunate choice of action, as President Moon Jae-in has been going all out to reach out to Pyongyang. South Korea's military is currently analyzing the launches. Kim Hyun-bin starts us off from the ministry of national defense. North Korea fired several missiles from its east coast Thursday morning which flew some 200 kilometers before coming down in the East Sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says these were surface-to-ship cruise missiles... launched from a base near the city of Wonsan in Gangwon-do Province. "This launch is seen as an armed protest by the regime to show off the accuracy of its anti-ship missiles to warn the U.S. carrier strike group in the region. Also, the regime could be trying to gain leverage against the U.S. and South Korea." The JCS added that the South Korean military has beefed up surveillance and readiness for possible additional provocations. It is suspected that the missile launched this morning was of a type first revealed during a parade for the regime's late founder Kim Il-Sung's 105th birthday in mid-April. After the launch was detected, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff directly contacted President Moon Jae-in. This marks the fifth round of missile firings from the North since the new liberal administration took office in early May, and comes even as President Moon pushes to improve inter-Korean relations. Just last week the regime fired a enhanced scud-type ballistic missile which can apparently target both ships and ground targets. ed: devin ""Our new government is showing interest in inter-Korean talks, but North Korea keeps firing missiles because they believe their WMDs can overcome our defenses. So we need to first enhance our counter-abilities such as the KAMD, and our SLBMs... and then try to establish dialogue." Washington has also expressed concerns about the North's missile capability, especially its intercontinental ballistic missiles, which the regime claims can reach the west coast of the United States. "So far, all of the missiles newly revealed in April's military parade have been test fired except for the ICBM, which experts say could be fired in the near future." Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News.

North Korea fires missile over Japan in 'unprecedented threat'- BBC News

10:18
North Korea has fired a missile over northern Japan in a move Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called an "unprecedented" threat to his country. The missile, launched early on Tuesday Korean time, flew over Hokkaido island before crashing into the sea. The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting in response. North Korea has conducted a flurry of missile tests recently, but this is the first time it has fired what is thought to be a ballistic weapon over Japan. On the two previous occasions its rockets crossed Japan - in 1998 and 2009 - North Korea said they were for satellite launch vehicles, not weapons. The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo says this latest launch appears to be the first of a missile powerful enough to potentially carry a nuclear warhead.
