Thomas Hunger is an average German fellow but with a touch of quirkiness—his obsession with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). He beams with childish enthusiasm and his eyes light up with wonder every time he talks about this natural phenomenon. But Thomas is not a visitor seeing it for the first time nor is he just a regular tour guide—Thomas “chases” Aurora like a stormchaser would chase tornados. He is in the business of selling the experience of seeing the Northern Lights even though he can never guarantee his guests that he and his team will succeed "catching" one. Still, his trips are filled with excitement and frenzy as he constantly consults weather apps to find it, communicates with his team on possible sightings, and crosses open borders into Sweden and Finland with his head fixed skywards, waiting for Aurora to poke out from behind the clouds at night. When the van they travel in stops his enthusiastic guests get off and plant a thicket of tripods in the snow—cameras pointed up and ISOs boosted high to vividly capture the magical and undulating green waves in the sky. Thomas runs one of the most successful companies in Tromsø, Norway incidentally called, Chasing Lights. Guests from as far as Malaysia, China and India make the journey just to be mesmerized by this wash of green that fills the skies of Arctic nights. It’s an experience to cross off the bucket list, his guests often say.

Filmed in real time video (no time-lapse) in Full HD1080 during the night of the 8th of October of 2015 in Kvaloya, Tromsø, in the Arctic Norway. An amazing display of northern lights (aurora borealis) happened that night. Filmed with the Sony A7s camera, a real low light monster, with a Canon 50mm f1.4 and Metabones adapter. ISO between 200 and 25600. No noise reduction, no color correction or sharpening filter at all, everything is edited as it is, straight out from the camera. Had such a fun day today in Tromso, Norway. We first went for a hike on the outskirts of the City to get a nice viewpoint overlooking the City as the sun was setting. Once again the light was absolutely beautiful so it made for some nice landscape photography. Later that evening we then went up Tromso's cable car to watch the Northern Lights over the entire City. It was really incredible and such a fun day! [email protected] Music: Max Richter - Spring 0 and 1 (Recomposition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons) I am now selling prints of the edited photos here!!! https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/albums/72157663959942941 Or email me at [email protected] :) The photos in this video are NOT edited. I wish I would have had the time and energy, though. This video was a total of 15000 photos and 150GB worth of material. A little yet very special adventure I did by myself to the Arctic. The location is Tromsø, Norway. Dates go through the 10th to the 14th of January 2016, where the Aurora Borealis reached KP5 and KP6 for days. Beyond anything, the most important element of this trip was befriending the incredible locals and other lovely aurora chasers who I met and whom had amazing life stories and lessons to share. Away from everything and everyone, away from all the stress, and literally on top of the world breathing pure cold air under the lights. Total solitude. I needed this. I also made a BEAUTIFUL timelapse montage of my trip. I will make the description short and in plain English; I basically witnessed during my 5 day stay the strongest Aurora Borealis sets in years with the best meteorological conditions one could ask for - clear skies and no moon for my entire stay. Two of the days I was there the auroras lasted for 12 hours. I witnessed 4 KP5’s (G1 Storms) and 1 KP6 (G2 Storm) on the 12th. I am one lucky guy. Very very little people will ever witness what I did in their lifetimes.

Arriving in Tromso, Norway we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights on our first night. It was a night I will never forget as it turned out to be one of the best displays of the Aurora Borealis of the year so far. Admittedly, as I explain in the video, I did struggle with some of my equipment as I panicked a bit in the heat of the moment and the adrenaline got the better of me. I did however, manage to take some photos once I had composed myself and it was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Tromso is situated in the middle of the auroral oval, the area with the highest probability of seeing the northern lights. And it is easy to combine hunting for the lights with many activities such as dog sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. With many hotels and restaurants, I definitely suggest a Tromso visit. With or without the lights. January, 2018

This Voyage (25/09/2016 - 05/10/2016) on Ms Nordnorge from Hurtigruten was filled with extremely active Northern Lights displays. The Aurora amazed us more than 5 nights on an 11 day Voyage! In November 2016, I had the pleasure to film Kari Schibevaag (www.kariland.com), former world champion, kiting under the Northern Lights in Tromsø region, Northern Norway. While filming a documentary about orcas onboard Barba.no, with Andreas B. Heide (captain), Kari Schibevaag (kiter) and Jaap Van Rijckevorsel (assistant). I show the opportunity and we all went for it: we planned it on the boat, and we four jumped on the dingy and sailed out to a small beach on a remote island outside Kvaløya, Tromsø. www.buendiaphotography.com www.instagram.com/buendiaphotography www.kariland.com www.barba.no

Or: Steamed Hams but the Aurora Borealis is real (Read more below!) Chasing Lights Tour Guides Neil (Superintendent Gary Chalmers) and Thomas (Principal Seymour Skinner) headed out to reenact the famous "Steamed Hams" sketch from the episode "22 Short Films About Springfield" (S:7/E:21). The song played when the Northern Lights are dancing is from the ending scene of the fantastic episode "Mother Simpson" (S:7/E:8). We recorded in and around our office in Tromsø, Norway. The outside scenes were shot near the village Rekvik on the island of Kvaløya, just over an hour outside Tromsø. The Aurora Borealis made a spectacular appearance, just as the kitchen caught fire. No mothers were hurt in the making of this video. Looking for your own "Steamed Hams" moment under the Northern Lights? Book a tour with us at www.chasinglights.com. Tromsø is a city in the very northernmost part of Norway. It is almost 350 km north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the best places to view the spectacular Northern Lights in winter Tromsø is a surprise to most visitors: Here you find art, history, sophistication, good food and an infamous nightlife in a bustling, tiny city. All of it, though, is surrounded by spectacular scenery that is visible from everywhere in town. The city is home to the world's northernmost university, as well as research institutes and satellite based industry. The population is therefore highly skilled, but retains the straightforwardness and sense of humour that the North is known for. Tromsø's most visited attractions include Polaria, The Arctic Cathedral, The Cable Car, The Tromsø Museum, the Polar Museum and the Botanic Garden. Gun guarding the oldest house in Tromsø Aurora The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is a natural light phenomenon in the night sky. Tromsø is very favorably located for viewing the Northern Lights, but you cannot see the aurora at all times. Tromsø is within the aurora belt mostly between 6pm and midnight, occasionally between 4pm and 2am. It has to be dark for you to see it. Between late September and late March, it is dark after six, and you have maximum chances of seeing the lights. Clouds obstruct the view of the Northern Lights. October and November are humid autumn months, and often you don't see the lights. From December onwards, the weather is drier. March is THE driest month in this six-month period of good chances. Conclusion: December to mid/late March are the best times. Pick December/January for atmospheric visits in the dark, or February/March for thrilling outdoor activities. Sporty, outdoorsy people are recommended to come in March, as this month gives the opportunity to do outdoor activities in plenty of sunshine and good weather, and still observe the aurora after dark. The mid term holiday in February in many European countries is also a good time to come. Source: wikitravel.org/en/Troms%C3%B8

This Northern Lights cruise is rated as one of the best cruises in the world. This is the best way to see the northern lights and to enjoy the Norway coast. Hurtigruten is a shipping company that offer this amazing cruise which is a great way to explore the Arctic sky and the incredible Northern lights, the Aurora Borealis. This cruise is one of the best ways to explore the mesmerising Norwegian Coast and the world famous fjords. There are 34 stops along the way. We visited some of the most amazing cities and towns along the Norwegian coast: -Bergen: The cruise starts in Bergen, Norway's second biggest city after the capital, Oslo. Bergen is considered the gateway to the fjords. It boats the home of Edward Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer. The Bergen Funicular allows you to take a ride on Fløibanen cable car to the Fløyen mountain and lookout point. This gives you the best views of Bergen. -Ålesund: We explored the Art Noveau town of Ålesund, this pretty town has an incredible lookout point. It’s a bit of a walk with over 400 stairs, but the effort is well worth it. -Trondheim: Trondheim has an amazing gothic cathedral called the Nidaros Cathedral. There is a beautiful canal with colourful wooden houses along each edge. The canal can be traversed by crossing the beautiful Old Town Bridge. -Tromsø: This beautiful city has an incredible Arctic Cathedral which is in an unusual triangular shape. Tromsø has a cable car or aerial tramway called Fjellheisen which takes you to Storsteinen mountain some 400 meters above sea level. Northern Lights hunting through the fjords of Norway with Hurtigruten. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the Northern Lights attracts me and many others on a weeklong Norwegian coastal cruise with Hurtigruten. Guests have come all the way from China, Japan, the U.S. and Europe—united by a common goal. So what does it take to see the Northern Lights, exactly? “As long as we are north of the Arctic Circle, the only conditions we need to see the Northern Lights are clear skies and darkness,” said Bjørn Lemcke, assistant expedition leader on Hurtigruten’s Nordnorge. “We get many weird questions from guests about the Northern Lights. I always joke that I turn them on around midnight, and that I have a switch under my desk.” Sometimes the activity is strongest late at night, when guests are fast asleep. If you value seeing the lights over your beauty sleep, Bjørn suggests turning on the “info” button inside your cabin so that you can hear announcements about sightings on deck. “When the announcements are made, it’s crazy. Everyone will get up in the middle of the night if they haven’t seen it before,” he said. Not all the excitement takes place in the middle of the night, though. You might choose to spend the day admiring the Art Nouveau architecture in Alesund or walking up some 400 odd steps to the top of Mount Aksla. Perhaps you’ll try dog sledding at dusk in Tromso or take a winter walk in Bodo, through Viking graves and an ancient village. My favorite daytime excursion with Hurtigruten was a trip to the North Cape. A 1,000-foot cliff overlooks the northernmost point in Europe, and the untouched, barren landscape really makes you feel like you’ve reached the end of the earth. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you see the Northern Lights or what, lady? Well, the conditions were not in our favor for the majority of the cruise, with rain, snow and overcast weather. However, on our very last night onboard, after much perseverance and hours spent on deck, I finally caught a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. Though they were not shining as brightly as they could have been, I was able to get some decent photos on my digital camera thanks to some handy tips provided by Bjørn and the rest of Hurtigruten’s Expedition Team. Whether you see the lights or not, a trip along the Norwegian coast with Hurtigruten is filled with eye-opening experiences, cultural programming and striking scenery— leaving you with a new appreciation for the way Norwegians see the world. ___ If you value experiences over consumerism, if you think there's more to life than the 9-5, if you want to travel to every country in the world before you die, subscribe to my channel, and let’s see where we end up next: http://ow.ly/Vx3Xs Daily Snapchats: JoanJetsetter Blog: http://www.joanjetsetter.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoanJetsetter Vine: https://vine.co/JoanJetsetter Instagram: http://instagram.com/JoanJetsetter Tumblr: http://joanjetsetter.tumblr.com/ Executive Producer: Skye Mayring Editor: Gerardo Jaquez Lechuga Music courtesy of Killer Tracks [BMI] Name of Song: Ibitza CD Number: SA033 Track Number: 1 Name of Song: Clutching Tight CD Number: CM 105 Track Number: T33 Name of Song: Dimensions CD Number: ATMOS 344 Track Number: T8 Name of Song: Talk about it CD Number: CM 107 Track Number: T11 Name of Song: Crazy Parade CD Number: MAT 264 Track Number: T16 Name of Song: Change CD Number: BER 1245 Track Number: T58 My trip to Norway was made possible by Visit Norway USA and Hurtigruten USA.
