However, Julie Alice Chappell looks at it from a different perspective when she makes Computer Component Bugs. Such is the name of a series of sculptures made from recycled computer and electronics components. “With all their tiny components, complex circuitry and bright metallic colours I cannot help but compare them to the detailed patterns we see when we look at nature up close.” she wrote on Permaculture. Circuit boards are cut, wire is shaped, and the end result is a bug. A recycled bug, so this art is environmentally friendly. For Julie, the environmental message is always front and center in her works: “My collection highlights the dangers of planned obsolescence and the ever-increasing amounts of e-waste in the environment. This is perpetuated by advances in technologies and our ever growing dependence on modern gadgets.” Julie’s mean of getting the materials for the sculptures reflect this fact. Her first batch of electronics came from the Beneficial Foundation (also known as “The Craft’s Bank”) in Portsmouth distributes electronic no longer wanted by companies to various art related groups. She also finds computers and electronics just discarded all over the place. Probably has to scare some real bugs making home in old desktop towers, too. Our magnificent IBM 729 7-track magnetic tape drive is giving us read and write errors. We attempt another heroic repair. Which is a great excuse to take a close look at its amazing innards. Looks like nothing in the video, but just putting the 3 brush blocks back was a 3 hour operation with mostly 6 hands at a time inside the drives - including mine, which is why there is no video documenting it. Hence the clapping at the end, we were quite relieved we did put it back together correctly! Tape capacity is around 20 MB at the highest (800 cpi) density setting. Actually quite respectable if you compare it to this machine's main memory (16KB). Credits: Special thanks to Samtec for fabricating and donating the IBM-spec special wire. Extra special thanks to Shashi Chuganey for spooling the wire from scratch at our Oregon facility, and to Raymond Lee for silver epoxying them in our clean room facility in California. Also thanks to CHM docent team member Dave Bennett for finding a commercial source of replica brushes. So I didn't have to do the 92 production ones after the first 8 hero prototypes... Many more people were involved in getting these tapes operational, but limiting ourselves to the ones that appear in this video: Ignacio Menendez Glenn Lea Carl Claunch Stan Paddock And myself, Marc Verdiell Related Links: Official video of our IBM 1401: https://youtu.be/ZPpV8X91neQ Period video introducing the IBM 1401: https://youtu.be/xUQnVt5qS-Y Robert Garner's blog article about the restoration: http://www.computerhistory.org/atchm/... . HP Scanjet 3C as the vocals. It lags a bit due to the fast paced vocals. In order for the stepper motor to play a note it has to be moving and with that large carriage it takes a few milli seconds before it can play a note. It doesn't sound like a lot of time but stretch that over a 4 minute song and voila...out of sync. Programming does help to compensate but it is not perfect. I have a bad habit of seeing old computers and collecting them. I do, however, try to find good uses for them. Sometimes the perfect usage comes up right away, other times a project will simmer in my mind for a long time. The five computers are I got are all models from Dell: 1xDimension 8300, 2xDimension 3000, 1xDimension 2350 and 1xOptiplex 755. Of the two Dimension 3000 systems, one has the old style board with the AGP and SATA artifacts. The other uses the newer Dimension B110/1110 board (with no SATA or AGP artifacts). The 755, 8300 and one of the two 3000s are known to work. After bringing in the first Dimension 3000 and testing it out, I got to thinking about what I'd use it for. And then it hit me--why not make a PXE (remote boot) server with all the software I use to test and repair computers? It'd be a lot nicer than always burning CDs, preparing flash drives or writing floppy drive images and then losing (or repurposing) them! Without thinking much about it, I figure that software packages offering the ability to boot to almost anything over PXE would be quite numerous. Turns out it's not quite that simple--but someone did make it happen in the form of the ERPXE project! http://erpxe.com/ ERPXE is set up on a Linux host (almost any popular distribution will do, i went with Debian x86 in pretty bare trim). You do need to be able to exercise fine grained control over the DHCP server on your network, so that computers can find the PXE server when asked to boot that way. Fortunately, DD-WRT is up to the challenge! Thus far, I've set up Damn Small Linux, FreeDOS, Hiren's Boot CD, Hiren's Mini Windows XP, and customized a copy of the FreeDOS boot image provided by the ERPXE developers to boot into GRC's SpinRite 6 hard drive test and recovery utility. Booting into a more general Linux distribution is a work in progress. I assure you that I know what virtualization is. I've used VMware workstation since it first hit the market, and currently use other virtualization programs as well. I might be old fashioned, but I like using actual physical computers for some tasks. Some reasons are better than others--just remember that you can ALWAYS take your frustrations out on a computer with a unique task and only that computer will end up going down. :-P That's better than throwing a server full of virtual machines out the window and losing them all when only one had gone wrong or annoyed you! A video about ERPXE is likely to be forthcoming. It'll probably be a while, until I can gather my thoughts and prepare what I want to say. Meanwhile, here's a (kinda) short video about retrieving an optical disc wedged between two optical drives in a Dell Dimension 2350. The computer itself is presently dead. If you are commenting via Google Plus (and you probably are), please take a moment to look at your Google Plus settings and make sure people can reply to your comments, especially if you wish to ask a question of someone! As of this writing in March 2015, you can visit http://www.youtube.com/account to adjust this setting. From there, choose "Edit On Google+". Cancel the dialog about "changing your name". Choose settings from the list on the left. Look for the 'Who can interact with you and your posts" category. Make sure both "Who can send you notifications?" and "Who can comment on your public posts?" are set to ANYONE. Also: don't "disable replies to this post" or similar. That's *annoying*. Save the settings and you're done. Thank you.

English Channel. Top shots of the guided missile destroyer battleship HMS Glamorgan at sea. In the control / computer room a man pulls out old-fashioned computer records from a large control cupboard; officers on the bridge look at dials and through binoculars. Various shots in steering, control and engine rooms as the ship moves along. On the flight deck sailors play hockey while others watch and cheer them on. A Navigator on deck looks through a sextant while another officer makes notes. A helicopter is moved from a hanger out onto the deck and prepared for takeoff; firemen in asbestos suits and helmets stand by with a hose; the chopper takes off. Three young men play guitars and banjos before a television camera in a tiny studio; we hear that the ship has its own closed circuit TV station; good shots of the filming; tape recording machines going round; picture being adjusted. Men in a mess room watch the performance on the television while they have a pint. Several shots of the sailors getting their rum rations. Various shots in the kitchens show food being prepared and served into the sailors mess tins; good canteen and catering shots (most of the food looks pretty unappetising). In the sick bay a sailor gets a shot in the arm from a Naval doctor. Several shots of the radar antennae on the ship and the men looking at the radar scanner screens in the control room. Men in protective gloves and hood loads shells in the gun turret; M/Ss of the huge guns on the ship being fired. Several shots show the count down for Seaslug missiles to be fired; men at control panels look at dials and radar screens; an officer counts down into a microphone (mute). Complicated boards of buttons show the location of the missiles, intercut with shots of the missiles moving into position by electronic instruction. The missiles move into the launchers on deck and are fired; men watch their progress on a radar screen. Another launcher moves into position; L/S of the ship as the missiles are fired. Note: on file is correspondence and information about HMS Glamorgan. Cuts exist - see separate record. FILM ID:419.04 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV. " This might look like a random industrial estate in the middle of slum, but actually, I'm outside the place, you know, a very clever and quite simple way of giving our car the performance it really deserves." " This specialist tuning company boosts horsepower by reprogramming the engine management computer. It's safe for the engine and fast to do. Putting the car onto a rolling road means we can get our Porsche up to a top speed in a controlled environment and measure the current horsepower of the car." " Okay Martin, so 235 horsepower. Is that okay for this?" " Yeah, we're good to go. It's a good pocket of power." " Cool. So let's mess with it, that's all." " Before we can boost the performance of our engine, Martin needs to remove our car's ECU or engine control unit." " Now there's no real mystery about ECUs. It's just a computer in a box. But the thing I'm most interested in is that little chip. There is an EEPROM. It's been like an old-fashioned version of a memory stick." " We're going to replace the chip with a new one which will be programmed or mapped to increase both brake horsepower and torque." " So we've now got a new map onto a new chip, which is gonna give our car more performance, more power, basically more drivability. And we're actually gonna keep the old chip with the old map on there. So if anytime the new buyer wants to go back to the old ways, they can" " horsepower, and that's basically 31 horsepower more than when we started. So well worth it. What a brilliant result!"
