Turning Relational Database Tables into Spark Datasources

55:43
https://developer.oracle.com/code/online | Kuassi Mensah: This session presents a Spark data source for joining big data with master data in an RDBMS. It describes how such an implementation: Allows parallel and direct access to the RDBMS database (with the option of controlling the number of concurrent connections). Introspects the RDBMS table, generates partitions of Spark JDBCRDDs based on the split pattern, and rewrites Spark SQL queries into the RDBMS SQL dialect. Uses hooks in the JDBC driver for faster type conversions. Pushes down predicates to the RDBMS, prunes partitions based on the where clause, and projects columns to the RDBMS to reduce the amount of data returned and processed on Spark. Writes back the result set to the RDBMS table for use by traditional BI tools

JDBC Fetch Size - High Performance Java Persistence

04:46
In this episode I explain the importance of understanding JDBC fetch size and how tweaking this value can improve your queries and persistence layer performance. If the default JDBC fetch size is 50 (each database driver is different), and your select matches 103 rows, the first 50 of them rows will be returned to client, then when the JDBC resultset cursor calls next on to get 51, the java application will call over to the database and retrieve rows 51-100. And similiarly 101-103. This can degrade performance as you are introducing additional latency by calling the database over the network behind the scenes. Most java developers are not aware of this. JDBC provides the ability to change to fetchsize (auto-commit must also be set to false). In this case if we set it to 500, then all rows would be returned (103) and we would remove two network calls to the database for the query above. PostgreSQL by default returns all rows from the query. This is different for each database, so you will need to look at your database and Java Driver reference guide before tuning this flag. If you enjoyed this tip, don't forget to subscribe! Till part 3 :) Phil

I'm always looking for new video ideas. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create. --- Transcript Time - 00:00 Hi, this is Chad (Shod) with luv2code.com. Welcome back to another tutorial on Java JDBC. In this video, we’ll learn how to use stored procedures. We’ll first define what stored procedures are, next we’ll use callable statements. Then we’ll learn how to pass parameters to stored procedures. I’ll actually break this up over 4 different videos. I’ll show each parameter type in a separate video, so in this section we’ll cover IN parameters and then in the follow on sections, I’ll cover IN OUT, OUT and also result sets. Please stay tuned and check out the following videos for this. Time - 00:39 A stored procedure is a group of SQL statements that perform a particular task. They are normally created by a DBA. The stored procedures are created in a SQL language that supported by the native database. Each database has its own language. For example, MySQL has stored procedures language, Oracle uses PL/SQL and Microsoft SQL Server uses Transact SQL. Finally, the stored procedures can also have any combination of input and output parameters. For this tutorial, we’ll use the following table employees. The table has sample data for testing. I have a SQL zip file that’s you can download. It will create the table, add sample data and also set up the stored procedures. You can download it from the link below. Time - 01:22 All right, let’s go and switch over to the MySQL workbench and what I’m going to do is open up that SQL file and run it. This is our JDBC stored procedures directory. I have a subdirectory called SQL, and has this file, table set up that SQL. I’ll open this file, what this file does it basically creates a table as we see here and then it goes through and inserts a lot of sample data. Then, it also goes through and creates all of the stored procedures that we need for this tutorial, right. I’ll just go ahead and select execute and this will run and so now should I have a new table over here called employees and this table also has a collection or this database has a collection of stored procedures for this tutorial series, so get count employees, greet and increase salaries and we’ll go through all these stored procedures during the actual tutorial itself. Time - 02:24 In JDBC, you make use of callable statements to make a call to the stored procedures. There is a special syntax to call stored procedures. You make use of curly braces inside of the string. You also make use of the JDBC keyword call and that’s followed by the name of the stored procedure. In this example, we’re not passing any params, so we’ll just use the open and closed parentheses. Finally, we execute the stored procedure. Let’s talk about the parameters on the next slide. The JDBC API support different types of parameters. You can make use of the IN parameter, INOUT and also the OUT. The stored procedures can also return a result set, during the code examples in this video, I’ll show you how to register different parameters types and also values. Time - 03:09 Let’s start with IN parameters. For this parameter, we’re only passing an input parameter and the parameter is read-only. Our DBA has created a stored procedure on the database. This stored procedure will increase the salary for everyone in the department, which is kind of cool. The procedure takes two parameters. The first parameter is the department name. The second parameter is the increase amount. For example, we can call this stored procedure and increase the salaries of employees in the engineering department by $10,000. In terms of Java coding, we need to make a call to the stored procedure. First, we prepare a callable statement, since the stored procedure takes two parameters, we’ll make use of our question mark place orders for the parameters. [snip] ... See Transcripts tab

How many ways are there to get the connection in JDBC? Different ways to connect to database
Basics of jdbc programming Tutorial -2

15:20
This video deals with the steps involved in writing a jdbc program. I have included a basic jdbc program to understand the basic concept. JDBC Driver -A JDBC driver is a software component enabling a Java application to interact with a database. -To connect with individual databases, JDBC (the Java Database Connectivity API) requires drivers for each database. -the JDBC driver contains Classes & Interfaces which are used to interact with database. Examples: 1. sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver (Bridge driver/Type 1) 2. oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver (Type-4 driver for Oracle database) 3. com.mysql.jdbc.Driver (Type-4 driver for mysql database) ;etc Steps in writing a Jdbc program 1. Registering to a database Here we need to register the database driver so as to use the packages,interfaces and classes that gets automatically loaded. Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"); 2. Connecting to a database Here we establish a connection to a specific DB through the driver which is already registered in the previous step- Connection con=DriverManager.getConnection("URL","USERID","PASSWORD"); 3. Preparing the Sql statement sql statements are of 2 types: 1.select 2.Non-select we have generally the CRUD operations to be performed on the database: C-Create R-Read U-update D-delete we generally have 3 types of statements used : a. Statement b. PreparedStatement c. CollableStatement ex: Statement st=con.createStatement(); PreparedStatement pst=con.prepareStatement(query); CollableStatement cst=con.prepareCall(query); 4.Executing the sql query on the database To execute the queries the Statement interface provides the following methods: a. execute();-used mainly for select in pl/sql b. executeQuery();-used mainly for select statement c. executeUpdate();-used mainly for non-select statement 5.Retrieving the Result -For non-select,we store the result in integer return variable ,as we do the insertion,deletion and updation of the database -For select statement ,we will craete reference of ResultSet interface to retrieve the table 6.Closing the Connection con.close();

I'm always looking for new video ideas. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create. --- Video Transcript Time - 00:00 Hello. In this video, you will learn how to use Java JDBC to delete data from a database. In regards to Prep Work, you must have a database installed. This demo will use MySQL. Time: 00:13 You also need to have the database driver configured. Again, we’ll use MySQL. If you need help on how to do this, then please look at my other video “Connecting to a MySQL Database with Java.” Time - 00:31 In this example, we will use the employees’ table. This table has columns for employee ID, last name, first name, and e-mail address. Let’s switch over to the MySQL tool so we can review the data. Time - 00:45 As you can see, we have the employees’ table in place. Make note of the entry for David Brown. We will delete this employee from the database. The SQL command that we’ll use to delete an employee is delete from employees where last_name=’Brown’; Time - 01:09 Let’s move and try development environment and get started. We’ll start with this main program, that’s going to have three variables for the user, password, and the connection information. The first thing we’ll do is we’ll get a connection to the database by saying DriverManager.getConnection, passing in the params. Next, we’ll create the statement using myConn.createStatement. Then we’ll define the SQL query string. In this case, delete from employees where last_name=’Brown’ Time - 01:43 Now, actually execute that SQL statement by saying executeUpdate and the database will return the number of rows affected. Also, I will print those out. Then finally, I’ll just print out “Delete complete.” so that we know that I’m done. Time - 02:01 Now, let’s run our application. I’ll right click; I’ll select “Run As”, “Java Application.” Now, let it execute. Now, it will print out the number of Rows affected and Delete complete. Now, let’s move over to our SQL Query tool and very the results. Time - 02:24 If you note here with the previous entry, we had a listing for a David Brown. I’ll refresh this Query, and now note that David Brown is gone. A Java Application was actually successful in deleting that entry. Time - 02:37 Great, so in summary, you learned how to use Java JDBC to delete data from a database. If you would like to download the source code, please visit luv2code.com.
