It’s a statement that lets you either insert or update data in a table - all in a single statement! It’s helpful if you’re using an ETL (Extract Transform Load) process when creating or updating a data warehouse. It’s also helpful when loading data into your own database if you’re not creating a data warehouse. It allows you to prevent duplicate data and ensure you have up-to-date data in your table. This means we no longer have to use multiple statements for performing Insert, Update and Delete. With merge statement we require 2 tables 1. Source Table - Contains the changes that needs to be applied to the target table 2. Target Table - The table that require changes (Inserts, Updates and Deletes) The merge statement joins the target table to the source table by using a common column in both the tables. Based on how the rows match up as a result of the join, we can then perform insert, update, and delete on the target table. Merge statement syntax MERGE [TARGET] AS T USING [SOURCE] AS S ON [JOIN_CONDITIONS] WHEN MATCHED THEN [UPDATE STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN [INSERT STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN [DELETE STATEMENT] Example 1 : In the example below, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE are all performed in one statement 1. When matching rows are found, StudentTarget table is UPDATED (i.e WHEN MATCHED) 2. When the rows are present in StudentSource table but not in StudentTarget table those rows are INSERTED into StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET) 3. When the rows are present in StudentTarget table but not in StudentSource table those rows are DELETED from StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE) Create table StudentSource ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Create table StudentTarget ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME) WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN DELETE; Please Note : Merge statement should end with a semicolon, otherwise you would get an error stating - A MERGE statement must be terminated by a semi-colon (;) In real time we mostly perform INSERTS and UPDATES. The rows that are present in target table but not in source table are usually not deleted from the target table. Example 2 : In the example below, only INSERT and UPDATE is performed. We are not deleting the rows that are present in the target table but not in the source table. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. How to Resolve Oracle SQL Parent Key Not Found (ORA-02291)

In this video, we’ll explain what the ORA-02291 “parent key not found” error is, see an example, and look at how to resolve it. This error usually happens when we try to insert data into a table. It looks like this: Error is: ORA-02291: integrity constraint (constraint_name) violated - parent key not found So what does this error mean? It means we’re trying to insert data into a child table, and there is no related record in the parent table. If a foreign key has been set up to enforce this relationship, there needs to be a parent to insert a child that refers to it. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

SQL Right versus Left Outer Joins - Now which table returns all the rows?

An outer join is a join where all rows from one table are included in the result, but if there isn't a match in the other, then a NULL is returned. The difference between left and right outer joins has to do with table position.  A left and right refer to where a table resides in relationship to the FROM clause.  The left table is the table that is in the FROM clause, or left of the join condition, the join clause here.  And a right table is on the right side of the join clause. When we speak of a left outer join, what we're saying is, take all the rows from the left table, and join them to rows on the right table.  And conversely, when we start learning about right outer joins, what we'll be saying is take all the rows from the right table, and match them where you can to rows from the left table. Hopefully, now you have a good understand between the difference of left, and right outer joins.  Remember that the left table is referring to the table in the FROM clause, and the right table is the table that is after the join clause.  The key difference between a left outer join, and a right outer join is that in a left outer join it's the table in the FROM clause whose all rows are returned.  Whereas, in a right outer join we are returning all rows from the table specified in the join clause.

The following query retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB We can also achieve the same thinkg using INNER join. The following INNER join query would produce the exact same result. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id What is the difference between INTERSECT and INNER JOIN 1. INTERSECT filters duplicates and returns only DISTINCT rows that are common between the LEFT and Right Query, where as INNER JOIN does not filter the duplicates. To understand this difference, insert the following row into TableA Insert into TableA values (2, 'Mary', 'Female') Now execute the following INTERSECT query. Notice that we get only the DISTINCT rows Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB Now execute the following INNER JOIN query. Notice that the duplicate rows are not filtered. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id You can make the INNER JOIN behave like INTERSECT operator by using the DISTINCT operator Select DISTINCT TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id 2. INNER JOIN treats two NULLS as two different values. So if you are joining two tables based on a nullable column and if both tables have NULLs in that joining column then, INNER JOIN will not include those rows in the result-set, where as INTERSECT treats two NULLs as a same value and it returns all matching rows. We’re all the way down to section 3 where I want to show you how to merge a document with an existing data source. Earlier when we created our own main document we merged it with a data source that we created in Word because we didn’t have one already. So now I want to show you how to find one that’s a file in your computer somewhere and actually pull that in. I’ve opened up my main document and you can see that this file is very similar to the one we created over in section 2 when we created our own main document. But what I’d like to do now is I’m going to go ahead and go to the Mailings tab and start the mail merge and I’ll go back to the wizard. What I wanted you to notice this time is it automatically put me on step three because it doesn’t need to know steps one and two since I had an existing document I went ahead and opened. What you’ll see here is the last file that was merged into this main document will be listed here. And if you want to change it you select a different list. Now before I do this I wanted to flip over and show you that what I want to do this time is merge an Excel file and pull that data into this main document. So let me flip over to the Excel file and just show it to you real quick. Here’s the Excel file and I want you to notice that I have a header row at the top. These headers have to correspond with the actual field names over in Word. If it sees that first name is actually F Name over in the main document then it won’t know they’re a match and you’ll have to do some manual matching. So it’s best to have the field names here match the field names in Word and then you don’t have a problem. But you can see I just have all the data below each of the columns here and that’s really all it is. And this is all over on Sheet 1 here. You can merge this data whether the file is open or not. I just opened it to show you what it looks like. So let me flip back to Word. If I did want to select a different list as it’s called over here I click on Select a Different List and you navigate and find your new data file and now you’ll see that it asks you since this one’s coming from Excel it’s asking me which sheet in the Excel file do you want to pull from. I’m going to click OK because there’s only one sheet there. And now what you’ll notice is that it’s showing me all of my mail merge recipients. So I’ll just click OK here and now let’s go ahead and go to the next step where it says Write Your Letter. Now we don’t have to do that because ours is already written. So I’ll go ahead and click Next again and here’s where I can preview my letters. So I can go through the recipients one at a time this way. Again if I wanted to change the letter itself I’m going to click on Preview Results and I can change the letter and then turn it back on. And if I need to change the data I’m going to go to the Edit Recipient List over here. But I’m going to go ahead and click Next and complete the merge. And then you would go ahead and say Edit the Individual Letters like we did before and it would do the mail merge for you. So pretty easy to actually pull in external data. What I want to do now is talk to you a little bit about when you’re merging this data how you can actually do some sorting and filtering as you’re having it do the merge. Validate the structure components for consistency with the NIEM NDR and build and view your data models, then export your XSD schema and JAXB bindings. Then switch to the SQL viewer and pick and map your SQL table components into the vehicle search results XML structure. Save and run live with SQL data to verify desired results output. Next add a parameter filter to select only the requested data record based on license ID number. Then validate the XML content using the CAMV engine. Document your completed XML exchange, and package the NIEM IEPD artifacts. To subset a dataframe you can thus use subsetting syntax from both matrices and lists. On the one hand, you can use the single brackets from matrix subsetting, while you can also use the double brackets and dollar sign notation that you use to select list elements. We'll continue with the data frame that contained some information on 5 persons. Have another look at its definition here. Let's start with selecting single elements from a data frame. To select the age of Frank, who is on row 3 in the data frame, you can use the exact same syntax as for matrix subsetting: single brackets with two indices inside. The row, index 3, comes first, and the column, index 2, comes second: Indeed, Frank is 21 years old. You can also use the column names to refer to the columns of course: Just as for matrices, you can also choose to omit one of the two indices or names, to end up with an entire row or an entire column. If you want to have all information on Frank, you can use this command: The result is a data frame with a single observation, because there has to be a way to store the different types. On the other hand, to get the entire age column, you could use this command: Here, the result is a vector, because columns contain elements of the same type. Subsetting the data frame to end up with a sub data frame that contains multiple observations also works just as you'd expect. Have a look at this command, that selects the age and parenting information on Frank and Cath: All of these examples show that you can subset data frames exactly as you did with matrices. The only difference occurs when you specify only one index inside `people`. In the matrix case, R would go through each column from left to right to find the index you specified. In the data frame case, you simply end up with a new data frame, that only contains the column you specified. This command, for example, gives the age column as a data.frame. I repeat: a data.frame, not a vector! Why so? Let me talk about subsetting data.frames with list syntax and it'll all become clear. Remember when I told that a data frame is actually a list containing all vectors of the same length? This means that you can also use the list syntax to select elements. Say, for example, you typed people dollar sign age: The age vector inside the data frame gets returned, so you end up with the age column. Likewise, you can use the double brackets notation with a name ... or with an index. In all cases, the result is a vector. You can also use single brackets to subset lists, but this generates a new list, containing only the specified elements. Take this command for example: The result is still a data frame, which is a list, but this time containing only the "age" element. This explains why before, this command gave a data frame instead of vector. Again, using single brackets or double brackets to subset data structures can have serious consequences, so always think about what you're dealing with and how you should handle it. Once you know how to correctly subset data frames, extending those data frames is pretty simple. Sometimes, you'll want to add a column, a new variable, to your data frame. Other times, it's also useful to add new rows, so new observations, to your data frame. To add a column, which actually comes down to adding a new element to the list, you can use the dollar sign or the double square brackets. Suppose you want to add a column `height`, the information of which is already in a vector `height`. This call ... Or this call ... Will do the trick. You can also use the `cbind()` function that you've learned to build and extend matrices. It works just the same for data.frames. To add a weight column, in kilograms, for example. If `cbind()` works, than surely `rbind()` will work fine as well. Indeed, you can use `rbind()` to add new rows to your observations. Suppose you want to add the information of another person, Tom, to the data frame. Simply creating a vector with the name, age, height etc, won't work, because a vector can't contain elements of different types. You'll have to create a new data frame containing only a single observation, and add that to the data frame using rbind. Let's call this mini data frame `tom`. Now, we can use `rbind()` to bind `people` and `tom` together: Wait, what? R throws an error. Names do not match previous names. This means that the names in `people` and `tom` do not match. We'll have to improve our definition of `tom` to make the merge successful: Now, `rbind()` will work as you'd want it to work. So adding a column to a data frame is pretty easy, but adding new observations requires some care.
