Merge Statement in Oracle SQL with Example (UPDATE/DELETE or INSERT)

15:04
This video demonstrates how to write a Merge Statement in oracle sql, how it is useful in doing a conditional update or delete or both of them when the condition between the target table and source table is evaluated to true, and how we can insert the record into the target table when condition is evaluated to false. The video also shows the use of UPDATE, DELETE and INSERT with Merge, and also the various possible ways to use a Merge statement!!!

This means we no longer have to use multiple statements for performing Insert, Update and Delete. With merge statement we require 2 tables 1. Source Table - Contains the changes that needs to be applied to the target table 2. Target Table - The table that require changes (Inserts, Updates and Deletes) The merge statement joins the target table to the source table by using a common column in both the tables. Based on how the rows match up as a result of the join, we can then perform insert, update, and delete on the target table. Merge statement syntax MERGE [TARGET] AS T USING [SOURCE] AS S ON [JOIN_CONDITIONS] WHEN MATCHED THEN [UPDATE STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN [INSERT STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN [DELETE STATEMENT] Example 1 : In the example below, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE are all performed in one statement 1. When matching rows are found, StudentTarget table is UPDATED (i.e WHEN MATCHED) 2. When the rows are present in StudentSource table but not in StudentTarget table those rows are INSERTED into StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET) 3. When the rows are present in StudentTarget table but not in StudentSource table those rows are DELETED from StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE) Create table StudentSource ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Create table StudentTarget ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME) WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN DELETE; Please Note : Merge statement should end with a semicolon, otherwise you would get an error stating - A MERGE statement must be terminated by a semi-colon (;) In real time we mostly perform INSERTS and UPDATES. The rows that are present in target table but not in source table are usually not deleted from the target table. Example 2 : In the example below, only INSERT and UPDATE is performed. We are not deleting the rows that are present in the target table but not in the source table. Truncate table StudentSource Truncate table StudentTarget GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME);

Oracle SQL MERGE Statement

07:52
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-merge-sql/ In this video, we’ll learn what the Oracle MERGE statement does and how you can use it. What is the MERGE statement? It’s a statement that lets you either insert or update data in a table - all in a single statement! It’s helpful if you’re using an ETL (Extract Transform Load) process when creating or updating a data warehouse. It’s also helpful when loading data into your own database if you’re not creating a data warehouse. It allows you to prevent duplicate data and ensure you have up-to-date data in your table. The syntax looks like this: MERGE INTO table_name USING table_name ON (condition) WHEN MATCHED THEN update_clause DELETE where_clause WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN insert_clause [LOG ERRORS log_errors_clause reject_limit integer | unlimited ] In this video, I also show an Oracle SQL MERGE statement example, so watch the video to find out more. For more information on the MERGE statement and how you can use it in your queries, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-merge-sql/

Sometimes when adding rows to your database need update-if-exists, insert-if-not-exists logic. Aka an upsert. You could write this as separate update and insert statements. But there is an easier way: Merge! Watch this video for an overview of how merge works. SQL Server 2008 - Merge TSQL Statement

08:48
Full Detailed Article for "Merge TSQL Statement" is available at : http://sqlserver-training.com/sql-server-2008-merge-statement-video-tutorial Follow us at more Updates at ----------------------------------------- Website : http://sqlserver-training.com/ Twitter : http://twitter.com/dbatag/ Facebook : http://facebook.com/dbatag/ Linked In : http://in.linkedin.com/in/dbatag/ ================================ MERGE is a new DML statement in SQL Server 2008. MERGE allows you to perform simultaneous UPDATE, INSERT and/or DELETE operations on one table. There are new physical operators that combine these operations so that they can be performed in a single scan rather than multiple scans. Microsoft have implemented the ISO SQL 2003 and 2007 standard MERGE statement (as seen in Oracle and DB2) and added some extensions of their own. Below are the three different matched clauses in MERGE: WHEN MATCHED THEN Rows that meet the criteria WHEN [TARGET] NOT MATCHED THEN Rows that do not match with another row in the target table WHEN SOURCE NOT MATCHED THEN Rows that do not match with another row in the source table In summary, SQL Server 2008 introduces the MERGE statement which will allow users to perform insert, update and delete operations in a single statement. tMap Joins and Filtering

18:46
The tMap component is part of the Processing family of components. tMap is one of the core components and is primarily used for mapping input data to output data, that is, mapping one Schema to another. As well as performing mapping functions, tMap may also be used to Join multiple inputs, and to write multiple outputs. Additionally, you can Filter data within the tMap component. This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. Alter table StudentCourses Add Constraint PK_StudentCourses Primary Key Clustered (CourseId, StudentId) Here is the SQL script that inserts data into the 3 tables as expected Declare @StudentName nvarchar(50) = 'Sam' Declare @CourseName nvarchar(50) = 'SQL Server' Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int -- If the student already exists, use the existing student ID Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName -- If the course already exists, use the existing course ID Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName -- If the student does not exist in the Students table If (@StudentId is null) Begin -- Insert the student Insert into Students values(@StudentName) -- Get the Id of the student Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- If the course does not exist in the Courses table If (@CourseId is null) Begin -- Insert the course Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) -- Get the Id of the course Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- Insert StudentId & CourseId in StudentCourses table Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) If required, we can very easily convert this into a stored procedure as shown below. Create procedure spInsertIntoStudentCourses @StudentName nvarchar(50), @CourseName nvarchar(50) as Begin Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName If (@StudentId is null) Begin Insert into Students values(@StudentName) Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End If (@CourseId is null) Begin Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) End Use the following statement to execute the stored procedure Execute spInsertIntoStudentCourses 'Tom','C#'

Intersect operator in sql server

05:29
sql intersect vs join sql server intersect example sql server intersect vs inner join sql server inner join remove duplicates In this video we will discuss 1. Intersect operator in sql server 2. Difference between intersect and inner join Intersect operator retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 The number and the order of the columns must be same in both the queries The data types must be same or at least compatible Let us understand INTERSECT operator with an example. The following query retrieves the common records from both the left and the right query of the Intersect operator. Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB We can also achieve the same thinkg using INNER join. The following INNER join query would produce the exact same result. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id What is the difference between INTERSECT and INNER JOIN 1. INTERSECT filters duplicates and returns only DISTINCT rows that are common between the LEFT and Right Query, where as INNER JOIN does not filter the duplicates. To understand this difference, insert the following row into TableA Insert into TableA values (2, 'Mary', 'Female') Now execute the following INTERSECT query. Notice that we get only the DISTINCT rows Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB Now execute the following INNER JOIN query. Notice that the duplicate rows are not filtered. Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id You can make the INNER JOIN behave like INTERSECT operator by using the DISTINCT operator Select DISTINCT TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id 2. INNER JOIN treats two NULLS as two different values. So if you are joining two tables based on a nullable column and if both tables have NULLs in that joining column then, INNER JOIN will not include those rows in the result-set, where as INTERSECT treats two NULLs as a same value and it returns all matching rows. To understand this difference, execute the following 2 insert statements Insert into TableA values(NULL, 'Pam', 'Female') Insert into TableB values(NULL, 'Pam', 'Female') INTERSECT query Select Id, Name, Gender from TableA Intersect Select Id, Name, Gender from TableB INNER JOIN query Select TableA.Id, TableA.Name, TableA.Gender From TableA Inner Join TableB On TableA.Id = TableB.Id Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/intersect-operator-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/intersect-operator-in-sql-server_6.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

Part 12 Can we join two tables without primary foreign key relation

10:38
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/09/part-12-can-we-join-two-tables-without.html Can we join two tables without primary foreign key relation Yes, we can join two tables without primary foreign key relation as long as the column values involved in the join can be converted to one type. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

SQL Scenario 4

Correction : In the video for Case 5 i have said that left outer join means we will get all the records. I actually mean all the records from the left table i.e., alias 'a' matching records from a and b non matching records from a Below are scripts for practice Regular non correlated query SELECT ename, job, sal, deptno FROM emp a WHERE (deptno, sal) IN (SELECT deptno, MAX(sal) FROM emp GROUP BY deptno) Correlated sub query uses the values from the outer query SELECT ename, job, sal, deptno FROM emp a WHERE sal=(SELECT MAX(sal) FROM emp b WHERE b.deptno=a.deptno); Correlated sub query : approach 2 SELECT ename, job, sal, deptno FROM emp a WHERE 0=(SELECT MAX(b.sal)-a.sal FROM emp b WHERE b.deptno=a.deptno) using the having clause SELECT a.ename, a.job, a.sal, a.deptno FROM emp a, emp b WHERE a.deptno=b.deptno GROUP BY a.ename, a.job, a.sal, a.deptno HAVING a.sal=MAX(b.sal) using left outer join SELECT a.ename, a.job, a.sal, a.deptno, b.sal,b.empno FROM emp a LEFT JOIN emp b ON a.deptno=b.deptno AND a.sal less than b.sal WHERE b.empno IS NULL

SQL Server except operator

05:14
sql except example sql except operator example sql server except example sql server except order by sql server except clause SQL Server except operator In this video we will discuss SQL Server except operator with examples. EXCEPT operator returns unique rows from the left query that aren’t in the right query’s results. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 The number and the order of the columns must be the same in all queries The data types must be same or compatible This is similar to minus operator in oracle Let us understand this with an example. SQL Script to create the tables Create Table TableA ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10) ) Go Insert into TableA values (1, 'Mark', 'Male') Insert into TableA values (2, 'Mary', 'Female') Insert into TableA values (3, 'Steve', 'Male') Insert into TableA values (4, 'John', 'Male') Insert into TableA values (5, 'Sara', 'Female') Go Create Table TableB ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10) ) Go Insert into TableB values (4, 'John', 'Male') Insert into TableB values (5, 'Sara', 'Female') Insert into TableB values (6, 'Pam', 'Female') Insert into TableB values (7, 'Rebeka', 'Female') Insert into TableB values (8, 'Jordan', 'Male') Go Notice that the following query returns the unique rows from the left query that aren’t in the right query’s results. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA Except Select Id, Name, Gender From TableB To retrieve all of the rows from Table B that does not exist in Table A, reverse the two queries as shown below. Select Id, Name, Gender From TableB Except Select Id, Name, Gender From TableA You can also use Except operator on a single table. SQL script to create tblEmployees table Create table tblEmployees ( Id int identity primary key, Name nvarchar(100), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert into tblEmployees values ('Mark', 'Male', 52000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Mary', 'Female', 55000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Steve', 'Male', 45000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('John', 'Male', 40000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Sara', 'Female', 48000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Pam', 'Female', 60000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Tom', 'Male', 58000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('George', 'Male', 65000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Tina', 'Female', 67000) Insert into tblEmployees values ('Ben', 'Male', 80000) Go Except operator on a single table Select Id, Name, Gender, Salary From tblEmployees Where Salary ]= 50000 Except Select Id, Name, Gender, Salary From tblEmployees Where Salary ]= 60000 Order By clause should be used only once after the right query Select Id, Name, Gender, Salary From tblEmployees Where Salary ]= 50000 Except Select Id, Name, Gender, Salary From tblEmployees Where Salary ]= 60000 order By Name Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/sql-server-except-operator.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/adsbygoogle-window.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

XML/SQL Exchange - NIEM IEPD Training: ULEXS getDataItem vehicle license worked example

22:00
See how to build a working XML query/response system with SQL database accessing using NIEM ULEXS schema and dictionary. Using the CAM toolkit we demonstrate quickly building everything needed. Taking the existing ULEX-SR schema, first ingest it then clean it up by removing unnecessary parts. Next adapt it by adding vehicle search results details from LEXS v4.0 dictionary components via drag and drop visual design. Validate the structure components for consistency with the NIEM NDR and build and view your data models, then export your XSD schema and JAXB bindings. Then switch to the SQL viewer and pick and map your SQL table components into the vehicle search results XML structure. Save and run live with SQL data to verify desired results output. Next add a parameter filter to select only the requested data record based on license ID number. Then validate the XML content using the CAMV engine. Document your completed XML exchange, and package the NIEM IEPD artifacts. Congratulations, with a few more steps you can integrate the solution into your messaging middleware and complete the application web services. Credits: Recorded on Ubuntu using Kazam and OpenShot. Managing Type 1 Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD) Using T-SQL

09:46
When building dimensional models it is crucial to decide on how changes in source data will be represented in dimension tables. This phenomena is called slowly changing dimensions. When it is not necessary to preserve the history, a Type 1 Slowly Changing Dimension can be used. This technique is commonly used in situations when the changed is implemented to correct an error. This tutorial provides a practical , follow-along, demonstration of how to manage Type 1 Slowly changing dimensions using T-SQL I also have a comprehensive 60 minute T-SQL course available at Udemy : https://www.udemy.com/t-sql-for-data-analysts/?couponCode=ANALYTICS50%25OFF

Sql - Insert if not exists query

00:36
sql insert if not exists In many cases we need to insert a row by checking whether it is already available or not. First we need to find a row is present or not. then if it is present, we skip the insert process. If the row is not present, then we insert the row. This query will help to insert rows only if not present. You can use this query directly in your application, where you need to check the presence before insert. The syntax is : merge into tblname i using (select ‘val1' as a1,‘val2' as a2,‘Val3' as a3, …. , ‘valN' as an) d on i.attribute1=d.a1 when not matched then insert (Attribute1,Attribute2,Attribute3, …. , AttributeN) values (d.a1,d.a2,d.a3,…,d.an); The example is merge into items i using (select '7' as itemid,'puri' as itemname,'25' as itemcost) d on d.itemid=i.itemid when not matched then insert (itemid, name, price) values (d.itemid,d.itemname,d.itemcost); Like us on FB https://www.facebook.com/Eddy5SmartSolutions/?fref=ts Subscribe Our Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtUgeNnytvnb51p25pcz58g
Importing Data from Excel into Oracle Database using SQL Developer 4.1

02:23
One of SQL Developer’s most popular features has undergone a significant upgrade. Users can quickly define and recall delimited or Excel files to be imported to a new or existing Oracle table. Data preview and validation is provided for each column, as well as ‘best guess’ data type and date format mask mapping. This process can now be automated via the SQL Developer command line interface (SDCLI) ‘Import’ command. NOTE: This is a video only. There is no audio. Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Part 19 Copying data from one table to another table using SqlBulkCopy

09:35
In this video we will discuss copying data from one table to another table. The source and destination tables may be in the same database or in different databases and these database can be on the same sql server or in different servers. In Part 18 we discussed, loading xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy. We will be continuing with the example we worked with in Part 18. Step 1 : Create a new database. Name it SourceDB. Execute the following sql script to create Departments and Employees tables, and to populate with data. Create table Departments ( ID int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(50), Location nvarchar(50) ) GO Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), DepartmentId int foreign key references Departments(Id) ) GO Insert into Departments values ('IT', 'New York') Insert into Departments values ('HR', 'London') Insert into Departments values ('Payroll', 'Muumbai') GO Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Male', 1) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Male', 1) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Female', 2) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Male', 2) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Male', 3) GO Step 2 : Create another new database. Name it DestinationDB. Execute the sql script to just create Departments and Employees tables. Here we have just the structre of the tables and no data. We will be moving data from SourceDB tables to DestinationDB tables. Step 3 : Include the following 2 connection strings for the Source and Destination databases in the web.config file of the Demo project we created in Part 18. [connectionStrings] [add name="SourceCS" connectionString="server=.;database=SourceDB;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [add name="DestinationCS" connectionString="server=.;database=DestinationDB;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [/connectionStrings] Step 4 : Copy and paste the following code in the button click event handler method in the code-behind file string sourceCS = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SourceCS"].ConnectionString; string destinationCS = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["DestinationCS"].ConnectionString; using (SqlConnection sourceCon = new SqlConnection(sourceCS)) { SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("Select * from Departments", sourceCon); sourceCon.Open(); using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { using (SqlConnection destinationCon = new SqlConnection(destinationCS)) { using (SqlBulkCopy bc = new SqlBulkCopy(destinationCon)) { bc.DestinationTableName = "Departments"; destinationCon.Open(); bc.WriteToServer(rdr); } } } cmd = new SqlCommand("Select * from Employees", sourceCon); using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { using (SqlConnection destinationCon = new SqlConnection(destinationCS)) { using (SqlBulkCopy bc = new SqlBulkCopy(destinationCon)) { bc.DestinationTableName = "Employees"; destinationCon.Open(); bc.WriteToServer(rdr); } } } } Note: Please make sure to include the following using declarations using System; using System.Configuration; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; As the column names in the source and destination tables are the same column mappings are not required. How to Add Rows to Excel and Update Formulas in New Rows

03:49
Learn how to insert a row, or several rows into Excel, and to copy sheet formulas into the new rows. This demonstration uses our Excel Cashbook Template, useful for small businesses to start their bookkeeping records - learn more here http://www.beginner-bookkeeping.com/excel-cash-book.html Start at the beginning to learn how to add one row. Go to 1:16 in the video to learn how to insert several rows. Go to 1:44 in the video to learn how to update the formulas in the new cells. See below for the video transcription. Learn how to insert a row or several rows into an excel spreadsheet and how to copy the formula in any cells that have a formula into your new rows. This demonstration is done in our Excel Cash Book template. To insert a row, move your mouse cursor to the left hand margin which shows the numbered rows. If you want to insert a row between rows 13 and 14 you need to place your mouse cursor below where you want to insert your row [wait for the black, right pointing arrow to pop up]. Click on 14 with your left mouse button, then click on your right mouse button which brings up a menu of selections. Click on Insert with your left mouse button. Then you will see a row has been inserted. If you need to insert several rows, let’s say three rows above row number 15, move your mouse curser to the left margin, when the black arrow pops up, click the left mouse button, hold it down and drag downwards three rows. Then click the right mouse button, click on Insert, and now you have three new rows. The next thing is to make sure that the formula in the formula column [headed Total In] is carried into the new cells. If you click in the new cells and look up in the formula bar at the top you will see that it is empty, there is no formula there. It is the same for each row. If you try to enter any data in the cells of each new row it doesn’t carry through to the total in in column. What we want to do [to fix that] is carry the formula in the cell that was there already, down into each of the new cells. To copy it down, point the mouse curser into the very bottom right corner of the cell on the tiny square, (wherever you move around in excel you have a white cross, but when you point it to that small square it changes to a black cross), hold your left mouse button on that square and drag down into the new rows. Test it out by entering some information and you can see that it has carried the totals through. If you are using our excel cash book template you are going to have other columns with formulas that you will need to carry down (Total Out and Bank Balance) so you can drag them down. You will also see some formulas along the bottom of the spreadsheet which are the totals of each column. When you insert new rows you don’t have to go down to these bottom totals to do anything because excel will automatically include the new cells in these calculation formulas. The End.

For example, the following "UPDATE" query, updates a set of rows that matches the condition in the "WHERE" clause at the same time. Update tblProductSales Set UnitPrice = 50 where ProductId = 101 However, if there is ever a need to process the rows, on a row-by-row basis, then cursors are your choice. Cursors are very bad for performance, and should be avoided always. Most of the time, cursors can be very easily replaced using joins. There are different types of cursors in sql server as listed below. We will talk about the differences between these cursor types in a later video session. 1. Forward-Only 2. Static 3. Keyset 4. Dynamic Let us now look at a simple example of using sql server cursor to process one row at time. We will be using tblProducts and tblProductSales tables, for this example. On my machine, there are 400,000 records in tblProducts and 600,000 records in tblProductSales tables. If you want to learn about generating huge amounts of random test data, please watch Part - 61 in sql server video tutorial. The link is below. http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/videos?flow=grid&view=1 Cursor Example: Let us say, I want to update the UNITPRICE column in tblProductSales table, based on the following criteria 1. If the ProductName = 'Product - 55', Set Unit Price to 55 2. If the ProductName = 'Product - 65', Set Unit Price to 65 3. If the ProductName is like 'Product - 100%', Set Unit Price to 1000 For the SQL code samples used in the demo please visit my blog at the following link http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/01/cursors-in-sql-server-part-63.html The cursor will loop thru each row in tblProductSales table. As there are 600,000 rows, to be processed on a row-by-row basis, it takes around 40 to 45 seconds on my machine. We can achieve this very easily using a join, and this will significantly increase the performance. We will discuss about this in our next video session. To check if the rows have been correctly updated, please use the following query. Select Name, UnitPrice from tblProducts join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where (Name='Product - 55' or Name='Product - 65' or Name like 'Product - 100%')
