jQuery datatables stored procedure for paging sorting and searching
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/08/jquery-datatables-stored-procedure-for.html In this video we will discuss implementing a stored procedure that can perform paging sorting and searching. In our upcoming videos we will discuss writing a generic handler that calls this stored procedure. The generic handler will convert the data to JSON format. The JSON formatted data can then be consumed by the jQuery datatables plugin. All the processing, that is, paging, sorting and searching is done on the server side. If the dataset is small you can retrieve all the data at once and all the processing (i.e paging, searching, sorting) can be done on the client-side. We discussed this in Part 106 for jQuery tutorial. However, if the dataset is large (i.e if you have millions of records), loading all data at once is not the best thing to do from a performance standpoint. With large dataset, we only want to load the correct set of rows (sorted, paged and filtered data ) that want to display on the page. So all the processing ((i.e paging, searching and sorting) should be done by the server. So in this and our upcoming videos we will discuss performing server side processing. SQL Script to create the table and populate it with test data Create table tblEmployees ( ID int primary key identity, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(20), JobTitle nvarchar(20) ) Go Insert into tblEmployees values('Mark', 'Hastings','Male','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Maria', 'Nicholas','Female','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Robert', 'Stephenson','Male','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Mary', 'Quant','Female','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('John', 'Stenson','Male','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Gilbert', 'Sullivan','Male','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Rob', 'Gerald','Male','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Ron', 'Simpson','Male','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Sara', 'Solomon','Female','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Rad', 'Wicht','Male','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Julian', 'John','Male','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('James', 'Bynes','Male','Sr. Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Mary', 'Ward','Female','Developer') Insert into tblEmployees values('Michael', 'Niron','Male','Sr. Developer') SQL Server stored procedure paging sorting and searching create proc spGetEmployees @DisplayLength int, @DisplayStart int, @SortCol int, @SortDir nvarchar(10), @Search nvarchar(255) = NULL as begin Declare @FirstRec int, @LastRec int Set @FirstRec = @DisplayStart; Set @LastRec = @DisplayStart + @DisplayLength; With CTE_Employees as ( Select ROW_NUMBER() over (order by case when (@SortCol = 0 and @SortDir='asc') then Id end asc, case when (@SortCol = 0 and @SortDir='desc') then Id end desc, case when (@SortCol = 1 and @SortDir='asc') then FirstName end asc, case when (@SortCol = 1 and @SortDir='desc') then FirstName end desc, case when (@SortCol = 2 and @SortDir='asc') then LastName end asc, case when (@SortCol = 2 and @SortDir='desc') then LastName end desc, case when (@SortCol = 3 and @SortDir='asc') then Gender end asc, case when (@SortCol = 3 and @SortDir='desc') then Gender end desc, case when (@SortCol = 4 and @SortDir='asc') then JobTitle end asc, case when (@SortCol = 4 and @SortDir='desc') then JobTitle end desc ) as RowNum, COUNT(*) over() as TotalCount, Id, FirstName, LastName, Gender, JobTitle from tblEmployees where (@Search IS NULL Or Id like '%' + @Search + '%' Or FirstName like '%' + @Search + '%' Or LastName like '%' + @Search + '%' Or Gender like '%' + @Search + '%' Or JobTitle like '%' + @Search + '%') ) Select * from CTE_Employees where RowNum ] @FirstRec and RowNum [= @LastRec end Finally test the stored procedure

Database Design 39 - Indexes (Clustered, Nonclustered, Composite Index)
This video covers the basics of indexes. Indexing is an extremely important step of database design. Without Indexes database queries can take a substantial amount of time and hog system resources. The main two classifications of indexes are clustered and non-clustered indexes. Clustered indexes are usually the primary key and determine how the data is actually stored in the table. These are the fastest and most effective. Non-clustered indexes sort a reference to data that is still fast but doesn't actually determine how the data is structured. The best tip I can give you is to use indexes but don't over use them. Having loads of indexes on columns that are barely ever in a where clause or join can bog down the database. This is because every time the table is updated the index must also be updated! When a database looks through a table for certain where conditions on a column that does not have an index, it does an entire table scan. This is not a good practice for large databases (or even small databases but not as bad). With an index the database will do an index seek and quickly find the data you are looking for. Composite indexes consist of two or more columns within one index. Use these when you plan on using the two columns together for a database query WHERE clause. R tutorial - Learn How to Subset, Extend & Sort Data Frames in R
Explore how you can subset, extend and sort your data frames in R. Join DataCamp today, and start our interactive intro to R programming tutorial for free: https://www.datacamp.com/courses/free-introduction-to-r The data frame is somewhere on the intersection between matrices and lists. To subset a dataframe you can thus use subsetting syntax from both matrices and lists. On the one hand, you can use the single brackets from matrix subsetting, while you can also use the double brackets and dollar sign notation that you use to select list elements. We'll continue with the data frame that contained some information on 5 persons. Have another look at its definition here. Let's start with selecting single elements from a data frame. To select the age of Frank, who is on row 3 in the data frame, you can use the exact same syntax as for matrix subsetting: single brackets with two indices inside. The row, index 3, comes first, and the column, index 2, comes second: Indeed, Frank is 21 years old. You can also use the column names to refer to the columns of course: Just as for matrices, you can also choose to omit one of the two indices or names, to end up with an entire row or an entire column. If you want to have all information on Frank, you can use this command: The result is a data frame with a single observation, because there has to be a way to store the different types. On the other hand, to get the entire age column, you could use this command: Here, the result is a vector, because columns contain elements of the same type. Subsetting the data frame to end up with a sub data frame that contains multiple observations also works just as you'd expect. Have a look at this command, that selects the age and parenting information on Frank and Cath: All of these examples show that you can subset data frames exactly as you did with matrices. The only difference occurs when you specify only one index inside `people`. In the matrix case, R would go through each column from left to right to find the index you specified. In the data frame case, you simply end up with a new data frame, that only contains the column you specified. This command, for example, gives the age column as a data.frame. I repeat: a data.frame, not a vector! Why so? Let me talk about subsetting data.frames with list syntax and it'll all become clear. Remember when I told that a data frame is actually a list containing all vectors of the same length? This means that you can also use the list syntax to select elements. Say, for example, you typed people dollar sign age: The age vector inside the data frame gets returned, so you end up with the age column. Likewise, you can use the double brackets notation with a name ... or with an index. In all cases, the result is a vector. You can also use single brackets to subset lists, but this generates a new list, containing only the specified elements. Take this command for example: The result is still a data frame, which is a list, but this time containing only the "age" element. This explains why before, this command gave a data frame instead of vector. Again, using single brackets or double brackets to subset data structures can have serious consequences, so always think about what you're dealing with and how you should handle it. Once you know how to correctly subset data frames, extending those data frames is pretty simple. Sometimes, you'll want to add a column, a new variable, to your data frame. Other times, it's also useful to add new rows, so new observations, to your data frame. To add a column, which actually comes down to adding a new element to the list, you can use the dollar sign or the double square brackets. Suppose you want to add a column `height`, the information of which is already in a vector `height`. This call ... Or this call ... Will do the trick. You can also use the `cbind()` function that you've learned to build and extend matrices. It works just the same for data.frames. To add a weight column, in kilograms, for example. If `cbind()` works, than surely `rbind()` will work fine as well. Indeed, you can use `rbind()` to add new rows to your observations. Suppose you want to add the information of another person, Tom, to the data frame. Simply creating a vector with the name, age, height etc, won't work, because a vector can't contain elements of different types. You'll have to create a new data frame containing only a single observation, and add that to the data frame using rbind. Let's call this mini data frame `tom`. Now, we can use `rbind()` to bind `people` and `tom` together: Wait, what? R throws an error. Names do not match previous names. This means that the names in `people` and `tom` do not match. We'll have to improve our definition of `tom` to make the merge successful: Now, `rbind()` will work as you'd want it to work. So adding a column to a data frame is pretty easy, but adding new observations requires some care.

First Time on the MTB Trails - Learning to Unicycle EP6
Whole Playlist: https://youtu.be/4vOt8THL81s?list=PL5S7V5NhM8JRSJ3bMKsqd3pqQ5wFCwZTT Last month, I got a Nimbus Oracle from unicycle.com. This badass mountain unicycle was in the hands of someone with no clue how to ride it. Instead of watching the instructional DVD's I took to the tennis courts to figure it out. I fell a bunch of times and ultimately rode like 10 feet. I was learning the hard way. The next time at the park, I made huge progress and was basically able to ride the thing—in random directions. After another hour of practice I could steer it and sort of go where I wanted to. That day I learned that unicycling is exhausting. On a rainy day a week later I rode all the way to Riverwalk and crossed a scary main road. This was my first trip through the streets. I learned to free mount that day, which is getting up on the unicycle without support from a fence or a pole. My technique was to push down with my dominant foot, hop into position, and pedal away. This wrong technique is now burned into my brain. I messed around in the park some more and rode home in the rain. I was ready to step it up. Eager to take my unicycle off-road, I visited a nature path at Birch State Park. The path was windy and unstable with some low branches, but nothing like a real mountain bike trail. Ultimately I made it up this incline and through these roots. In 90 degree heat with no water, I almost vomited, and deserved it for not hydrating. I rode back to the car, which felt really far away, and downed melted iced coffee. And here's the part you didn't see. Friday evening, I rode all the way to James's house 2 miles away. I had to free mount multiple times, and ride much further than I ever had before. Surprisingly I made it with relative ease. Two miles would have been unthinkable just a week before. I did need to squeeze between these two cars, which could have ended in property damage. And here I am, Sunday morning at Oleta River State Park, to attempt a real bike trail. This is what I've been training for all this time. Roots, rocks, and wooden platforms all look bigger when you only have one wheel. Alright, here goes! I've ridden a unicycle about 10 times now in total, so it feels really good to be out on the trails this soon. Turning quickly is still the hardest part, followed by inclines, but just riding along an uneven surface trips me up from time to time. This platform might just be the most difficult obstacle I've braved yet. Riding a unicycle is now muscle memory. I could put it down for a week and pick up right where I left off. As a cyclist, it'll be interesting to see if the unicycle has helped me in other areas. Can I wheelie a fixie forever now? Has my precision on a normal mountain bike improved? Only time will tell. Every day I get messages from fans. While it's impossible to answer every one, I have noticed a lot of people asking if they're too old to start mountain biking. The answer to that would be a resounding "No". If unicycling were bicycling, I just learned to ride a two wheeler a few weeks ago. Now, I'm learning to ride mountain bike trails. Thanks for riding with me today, and I'll see you next time. Check out http://unicycle.com They made this video possible Stickers and shirts! https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/product-category/store/

Narayan Venkat | Oracle OpenWorld 2013
theCUBE co-hosts Dave Vellante and David Floyer sat down with Violin Memory VP of Production Narayan Venkat to discuss the world of flash. Floyer, the co-Founder and CTO of research firm Wikibon, has extensive expertise in the flash sector, and one of his recent studies showed that optimizing your infrastructure stack and spending money on storage (specifically Flash storage) can result in reducing the number of cores that you deploy to support applications. For Oracle customers, that's important because "the largest single component of any system running Oracle is the Oracle licence itself," Floyer explained. "If you can optimize on the numbers of cores that you need, using flash as a Tier, then the net effect of that is that a whole lot of processes that you would do waiting for I/O goes away, and you require far fewer cycles -- in the order of 40-50 percent less -- needing less Oracle licences to do your work. This allows for improvement on that environment," said Floyer. It was then the discussion moved to Venkat, speaking on the process of moving the Oracle data sets and applications in memory. "We've been preaching that for quite some time; if you move the bulk of your business critical applications in the system memory, you can achieve tremendous amount of application acceleration and, as a result, business acceleration too," said Venkat. "That is exactly what Violin has been doing for the last five years." "At this event, Violin Memory is taking the opportunity to demonstrate a plethora of solutions in the memory array, flash memory, persistent storage running on the network, but we're also demonstrating flash memory acceleration on the server side with a PCI card, as well as demonstrating a solution Maestro Services Software Suite that enables you to pull data from applications that are running on legacy storage, helping you move them over to persistent memory base tier," declared Venkat. One of the recent trends is moving toward a world with no disks. For Violin Memory, that is a more tangible vision compared to the capabilities of its competitors. Vellante asked Venkat to elaborate on the concept of In-Memory. On in-memory "It's well understood among end-users and practitioners that if you can move your applications sets -- or the hot data -- in-Memory, and I say that in a broad sense, you can certainly accelerate the applications." On the other hand, it's well known that the amount of processed data sets is much larger than the active data sets. "If you have a broader tier of memory -- some of it is non-persistent and some in-Memory, and you stay away from using (spinning) disks as means for persisting data, then, at scale, you can achieve tremendous economics and business acceleration," said Venkat. Last week Violin Memory announced its new complementary software called Maestro Services Software Suite, which incorporates technologies from acquired companies as well as technology developed in-house. The result allows clients to tier applications data between disk storage systems resident on the network, while incorporating a memory tier. "You can use this tiered data in multiple ways; as a platform of accelerating read-only data (cache), or a broader scheme in terms of tiering, where both read-only and write data are stored in the persistent memory," said Venkat. "We believe the solution to be an on-ramp to help you move your data sets from legacy spinning disks storage architectures to a persistent memory architecture." Apart from the seamless, non-disruptive process, the suite can easily be removed if need be, once the data has been migrated from the legacy architecture to the new architecture. How do you convince CIOs to migrate mission-critical apps? As David Floyer put it, "Oracle databases tend to be the mission-critical applications in organizations, and people are very reluctant to take any sort of risks with that." In this respect, Floyer wanted to know how to overcome this impediment, and how Violin Memory convinces a CIO to let them help with the step-by-step migration. "We've been going into primary database workloads -- so think mission/business-critical environments -- wherein our customers have been using our memory arrays as a backend repository for their database workloads," Venkat explained. "We've been very successful in the market already, for the past several years, running those business-critical databases on our memory arrays. Our memory arrays are highly available, they are designed for tier 1 workloads, they have a tremendous amount of redundancy built in. We have a large number of customers deploying these today, which is a proofpoint of what we've been bringing into this market," concluded Venkat.
