The Importance of Product Positioning

02:25
If you would like to learn more about product positioning take our Optimal Product Management and Product Marketing training course. http://280.gr/2ztJgIS In this video 280 Group CEO and Founder, Brian Lawley, is joined by Senior Consultant/Trainer, Tom Evans, who is a Product Management and Product Marketing expert. This video's topic is the critical importance of product positioning. Tom finds positioning to be one of those topics that can be quite misunderstood in the marketplace. Tom has heard some experienced marketing people say that once you have built your product, then you want to define the positioning. This is surprising and frustrating to see however, because it's complete wrong. That is the opposite order of what you should really do, we need to start with the product positioning, and that defines what the product actually is. If you don't know the positioning, how do you know what to build? Positioning is not important just for the product, but for the other elements of the 4 Ps of Marketing: Price, Promotion, and Place. Beginning with the product positioning is a crucial decision that you need to make as a Product Manager, probably the most important determination when bringing a product to market. Don't do this out of order, clearly define the position you want to take in the marketplace then you can make decisions about your product and all the other strategies in Product Management and Product Marketing. If you would like to learn more about product positioning take our Optimal Product Management and Product Marketing training course. http://280.gr/2ztJgIS

Product Management Festival Michael Smith - Lessons Learned In Rebuilding a PM Organization

34:08
This presentation was part of "Product Management Festival" a product conference reuniting product experts from all over the world in Zurich for 2 days dedicated to product management, learnings and exchange. "In the start of my new position heading Product Management for SwiftKey, I have learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. I will attempt to share as many of these learnings with new product leaders, to help them create their new org or enhance their existing one, whether they’re a manager of PMs or a PM in a (mostly) functional team. I have instituted product requirements documents to create transparency, redesign how we prioritize projects, realigned the PM organization’s reporting, redefined the role of PMs from solely product owners into value creators, changed multiple communication methods, instituted review processes, helped create a new ideation process, started to train the org and mentor my team… all while making too many mistakes to count. Oh, well – ship and iterate, even within your organization, right?"
How to Become a Product Manager

01:27
Last week we talked about the different career paths you could explore after graduating a bootcamp, and I promised I was going to detail each of them. Today, I am going to talk about becoming a Product Manager. So what is a product manager and what do they do? Well, product managers are considered by some to be the product CEO. As a product manager, your job is to make sure the product the right product is shipped to the right customers at the right time. Sound simple? Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that because it blends elements of UX, Engineering and Business to make sure everything is in sync. How do they do it? Well they use a set of metrics and frameworks to analyze how customers interact with a product. In other words, what does the user journey look like as they pass through the product funnel? It’s a truly cross-functional position and one that can be a ton of fun. Are you interested in becoming a product manager? Well you ask yourself the following questions first: Do you have management experience? Do you have a good understanding of engineering requirements and principles? Do you understand user experience and customer journeys? Are you able to quickly understand and prioritize aspects of a business? If you’re nodding your head along at all these things then this might be right up your alley and I’d definitely encourage you to explore it further. And if you’re interested in learning more or have something to add please feel free to drop me a line in the comments.

Mark also answers the question about how technical you need to be to be a product manager and how being too technical can actually hamper progress. Because Mark started his own company and also worked for himself as a freelancer, I wanted to know how transferable are the skills between product management and being an entrepreneur. Mark emphasizes that the skills and interests are highly transferable because product managers, designers and entrepreneurs are all alike in that they all care a little bit extra in the user experience. Skills that Mark learned on the job as a product manager that he finds highly useful when starting your own products include time management and establishing a roadmap. How to Hire Product Managers | Interview with Jeana Alayaay

14:25
To build a product, you need a team of engineers, designers, and the glue that keeps them together: product managers! The role of the product manager has dramatically changed over the past decade, and because it’s still a relatively new field that’s in flux, companies often struggle to find candidates, which in turn makes it hard for candidates to understand what companies are looking for. So all this month, we’re going to focus on a number of best practices for sourcing, hiring, interviewing, and retaining product managers. In today’s episode, we’ll focus on giving you a lay of the land, starting with how product management is evolving and how to go about sourcing candidates for a product manager position at your company. To help us out, I’ve invited Jeana Alayaay, the Director of Internal Products and Services at Pivotal. This episode is chock full of helpful best practices for both product managers and those looking to hire them. As you watch, you’ll learn the following: - How product management has evolved over the years - Why you need to think about the type of product manager you are looking for (hint: there is more than one persona!) - How to communicate the key criteria you are looking for in a candidate - How to build a pipeline of candidates - How to train recruiters to help screen candidates - How to stop hiring out of desperation - Why it’s actually helpful to give candidates a quick no -- Build is produced as a partnership between Femgineer ((http://femgineer.com/) and Pivotal Tracker (http://www.pivotaltracker.com/).
