The new paradigms of product development | Günther Schuh | TEDxRWTHAachen

25:43
Times are changing rapidly in product innovation and development. In order to cope with the challenges, companies must face the shortcomings of their traditional processes and embrace the ongoing paradigm shift. This includes some possibly uncomfortable but necessary adjustments, but to Günther Schuh, the benefits are clear. Günther Schuh is a professor for production engineering at RWTH Aachen University and member of several different directorial boards such as the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering and the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Technology. His research covers a wide range of aspects of modern industrial engineering, from production and innovation management to business development for manufacturing companies and factory planning. With a strong commitment to real life industrial challenges and as a founder of both StreetScooter and e.GO Mobile, two electric car manufacturers initiated at RWTH Aachen, he makes a stand for the Aachen academic landscape as a breeding soil for product and process innovation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

How to Design a New Product

02:13
Designing a new product or technology requires extensive planning. One of the problems inventors or product designers regularly face is in knowing where to begin the design process. Knowing what the first step is when designing a new product or technology can give a you a jump-start on the entire process. Developing a design plan is the first step when creating new products and technologies, but the plan itself consists of several smaller steps. This is where http://www.focuspdm.com/services/ can help. Research The first phase of the planning process when creating any new product or technology is to conduct research so you can examine the feasibility of your idea. Things you need to know before moving forward with your design are whether there is a market for your product, how large that market is and how much the product will cost in terms of start-up. A nicely designed product with no market or need could be a waste of time. Definition Defining the scope of your project or product is another part of the initial planning phase. Once you have determined the feasibility of developing a new design or product, you have to determine to what extent your will product will be used by the market you have identified. If your market is limited to existing customers who already use a similar product, your plan may simply involve modifying an existing design, rather than creating an entirely new design. The scope of the project ultimately determines how the design process is carried out. Blueprint While many engineers and other product design professionals are tempted to make blueprint creation the first part of the planning process, this should typically be the last part of the planning phase. Blueprint design gives you the visual layout of the product you are creating by putting it on paper or on the computer screen. From there the rest of the design process can be finished. Development and Testing Once you have finished the planning phase and have a design blueprint in place, your product or technology can be developed to create a prototype. The prototype allows you to test your design to ensure that it meets quality standards and does what you originally designed it for in the first place. New Product Plan

03:05
The Strategic Product Plan- The essential goal of a product plan should be to ensure that a product is built that delivers some business value to a specific set of customers in order to meet certain financial goals based upon a defined corporate strategy. Successive plans should increase that product’s effectiveness in doing so. A new product plan describes the market opportunity, profiles the target customers, specifies pricing, identifies the financial goals, indicates the key priorities for development and enhancement, and provides a roadmap for delivery for at least the next four quarters. For a new product, a comprehensive MRD (Market Requirements Document) might well serve as the product plan. But each product that continues to be offered to customers should have a product plan updated every year. So, how does product management create a good product plan? What is PRODUCT DESIGN? What does PRODUCT DESIGN mean? PRODUCT DESIGN meaning & explanation

02:39
What is PRODUCT DESIGN? What does PRODUCT DESIGN mean? PRODUCT DESIGN meaning - PRODUCT DESIGN definition - PRODUCT DESIGN explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Product design as a verb is to create a new product to be sold by a business to its customers. A very broad concept, it is essentially the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products. Due to the absence of a consensually accepted definition that reflects the breadth of the topic sufficiently, two discrete, yet interdependent, definitions are needed: one that explicitly defines product design in reference to the artifact, the other that defines the product design process in relation to this artifact. Product design as a noun: the set of properties of an artifact, consisting of the discrete properties of the form (i.e., the aesthetics of the tangible good and/or service) and the function (i.e., its capabilities) together with the holistic properties of the integrated form and function. Product design process: the set of strategic and tactical activities, from idea generation to commercialization, used to create a product design. In a systematic approach, product designers conceptualize and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible inventions and products. The product designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products that people can use. Their evolving role has been facilitated by digital tools that now allow designers to communicate, visualize, analyze and actually produce tangible ideas in a way that would have taken greater manpower in the past. Product design is sometimes confused with (and certainly overlaps with) industrial design, and has recently become a broad term inclusive of service, software, and physical product design. Industrial design is concerned with bringing artistic form and usability, usually associated with craft design and ergonomics, together in order to mass-produce goods. Other aspects of product design include engineering design, particularly when matters of functionality or utility (e.g. problem-solving) are at issue, though such boundaries are not always clear.

“What is agile development?” It’s always been surprisingly hard to get a simple answer to this question. There are esoteric and convoluted descriptions of agile all over the web, complete with concentric circles meant to sum it all up into a simple concept, and yet that simple answer eludes us. To be fair, agile development methodology isn’t a simple thing. Sourceseek is a free service that handpicks software developers for your exact project needs. Get started here: https://www.sourceseek.com/get-started/ We’ll start with wikipedia’s agile methodology definition: From Wikipedia: Agile software development is a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change. It is a conceptual framework that promotes foreseen interactions throughout the development cycle. The first sentence starts by saying that agile development is a software development methodology. A software development methodology is a set of practices and procedures that help a team get organized and build software. It’s not the software itself, it’s the rule-book for organizing the team. That first sentence goes on to describe an iterative and incremental development approach. This is a key concept, and if you only take away one thing about agile this is the one to take away. In agile, we do iterations (circles) where we plan, execute, then review the results so that we can refine the plan and start all over again. We love change, and we want as many iterations and feedback loops as possible during the project. At the end of that first sentence, wikipedia describes collaboration: This really just means that we emphasize partnership and collaboration, with each member of the team serving a specific role but everyone expected to be flexible and to work together. In agile, we love teamwork. The second sentence brings in the concepts of adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and rapid and flexible response to change. In this part of the definition, we see how it all comes together! I interpret this sentence like this: ● We are adaptive. We don’t plan it all at the beginning and then stop planning. We do iterations and we are adjusting the plan all the time. This is why agile is so good for product development, we change and improve as we learn. ● We love evolutionary development. This is essentially the same thing, we learn as we go and we adjust, refine, improve... ● Time-boxing. This basically means that we manage our project using set blocks of time, like days or weeks, and we try to get as much done in those time-boxes as possible. This is the reverse of managing features. We consider what features we can build next week rather than looking at a list of features and asking how long it will take to build them. ● Rapid and flexible response to change: this is critical, and along with ‘iterations’ is the core answer to the question ‘what is agile development?’. We move fast, we are flexible, and we are truly ‘agile’! This is our mantra - fast and flexible - say it again and again!! What is agile development? ● Agile is a way of managing software projects. ● Agile is iterative, and goes in repeated cycles instead of in a long list of steps.. ● Agile is super collaborative and team-oriented. ● Agile is adaptive, constantly changing and refining plans, and moves fast! In almost every project, the client has a harder time expressing what they want at the beginning, and it gets gradually clearer towards the end. The can be a frustrating experience as mid-project changes are pretty disruptive. Let’s try it in agile. 1) Client hires developers by the hour, day, or week. 2) Client describes what they want to the developers 3) Developers start making designs and programming the theme based on what they client thinks they want. 4) Developers show their progress to the client constantly, even every day, to make sure they are on track. 5) The client makes frequent changes and tweaks, always refining the plan and improving the result. The developer also has input and suggestions. 6) The team keeps going until the project is done.. It all sounds very good, and it can be, but the reality is that the agile development methodology requires a solid team of smart people who know what they are doing or it can be a train wreck. It also requires that the entire team (client included) be committed to an honest, forthcoming approach that emphasizes success for the client. Subscribe to CUSTOMER ACCELERATOR: http://www.smallbusinesselite.co.uk/customer-accelerator/ Video transcript: Have you ever watched Dragons Den on the television? Now what you have to remember is that the people who are on the panel are successful business owners and entrepreneurs in their own right so have seen it, done it, and have a good idea what makes a good product or service. That is why they are often amazed by some of the people who pitch on the show. How often do we see a pitch about a product or service for which there will never be a demand! And sadly, more often than not, these same people have invested everything they own to 'create' this product that will never find a buyer. It's as simple as this ... if you want to make money to have to sell your goods or services to other people, your target audience. But they can only be your target audience if your goods or services match their needs or wants. Every selling proposition moves a potential customer either closer to desire or further away from pain so your products or solutions have to be tailored to their needs or wants. You should be looking at your products or services and seeing have they fit in with what your clients want and not with what you want, or your family wants, or even what your employees want. Let's have a look at some examples to illustrate the point I'm trying to make .... 1. You're a self-employed plumber who insists that your customers pay cash and there's no paper work ... your customers actually want a receipt and written guarantee with the option to pay with a debit card 2. You're a self-employed plumber who doesn't take cash, provides a receipt for all of your work, and gives a guarantee ... your customers want the cheapest possible price and want to pay cash 3. You design a rain proof coat from a special material meaning that it is dry again within minutes no matter how wet it is. Comes with a hefty price tag ... your customers are happy with an inexpensive fold away coat These aren't particularly great examples but what I'm trying to do is illustrate the fact that you can't sell what your audience doesn't want or need. So in practical terms what do your products or services do to meet the needs or wants of your target market? Are there things you could add to your service that would increase the positive experience of your customer? Actions Take a look at the products or services you offer to your customers and check ... Are you providing the ideal service or product for your customers ... for example, if you sold wood flooring do you provide a delivery service? 1. Could you improve your customers experience ... for example if you sold wood flooring could you provide videos on your website or from the manufacturer on how to fit it correctly? Could you happily recommend tradesmen who would enhance or compliment your local brand to ensure it is fitted properly thereby giving them the floor they dreamed about? 2. If you do provide 'free' delivery do you offer a discount if they take it away themselves for customers who want the keenest prices? 3. Could you create sample packs of your flooring with a deposit (to encourage them to return to your business) so that they can go home with the samples and choose the exact colour or finish they wanted? 4. Take that one step further ... could you send someone to their house (by appointment) to show them a selected range and receive advice on which way the floor could be laid to reduce costs or achieve a better finish? Final Note Don't forget, as a local business owner, the greatest source of information for all of these types of questions are your current customers. As them what they thought of your service, your products etc. What would they have been willing t pay more for and what would did they not like paying for? Answering these questions will enable you to provide a range of products or services. Again, as an example using the flooring we were discussing earlier ... Product A - discounted price on your flooring, take it away today Product A - regular price with free delivery Product A - premium price with free delivery and free fitting by guaranteed tradesman It doesn't matter what you sell or do, every product or service can have various price points and packages. Take the time to look at your business if you are providing the goods or services your customers are looking for or are they going elsewhere, to your competitors because you don't meet their needs?
