Is It Better to Have a Functional or Product Unit-Specific Business Structure?

04:45
When aspiring entrepreneurs envision their future companies, they tend to think about the products they will build. Not too much time is spent thinking about the fact that if the company grows, they will have to introduce a management layer into the organization. These changes introduce many new levels of complexity into company-building, so a recent KPCB Engineering Meetup gathered Mike Curtis, VP of Engineering at Airbnb, Jeff Huber, SVP at Google X, and Alex Roetter, VP of Engineering at Twitter, on a panel moderated by KPCB Partner Mike Abbott to share tips and tricks from those who have been through the process.

Agile Team Structure

08:10
In the past, we’ve used component teams in development: teams of people that with generally the same skills. These teams are typically assigned a part of a project to work on. Bringing these different teams together to create the final product can be a hassle and can result in unnecessary dependency management, overwhelming overhead, and a longer process. Learn how to build Agile teams that are cross-functional and are optimized for outcome as opposed to output. Want to know more about forming strong Agile teams? Business Studies - Organisation Structure: Business Exam Tips

Get Unlimited Access to GCSE Tutor Videos & Online Revision Here for £19.99: http://www.revisionapp.co.uk/product/online-gcse-revision. Businesses can be very complex organisations with many hundreds or thousands of people working in them in many different roles. In order to manage their resources effectively, businesses must have clear organisational structures in place. Organisational structures include the different relationships between people in an organisation. For example in some cases, an employer might want to have a very formal relationship between people in the organisation in others it might be more relaxed. This happens in every day life too. Think about any organisation you're a part of. Do you call the other people by their first names? Do you call them by their title? What about the other members themselves? Do they call each other 'Mrs D', 'Dr X' or 'Mr M' or do they refer to each other by their first names? How do they refer to the the person leading the organisation? Different levels in a business are referred to as hierarchies. A hierarchy occurs where people are given some sort of title or rank that signifies their importance in the organisation. All businesses have employees working at different levels of responsibility. At the bottom, a business depends on its operatives to produce the products or services. Team leaders often perform the day-to-day management role, with operational managers setting direction and strategy for the business as a whole. The number of employees in each level will depend on the business' organisational structure. It is important to determine who takes responsibility for decision making, who reports to who and who to blame when things mess up (or who gets the pat on the back if things go well!) There are three typical organisational structures. They are known as hierarchical, flat and matrix. A hierarchical structure is typical in large companies where each level of employee reports upwards and each level has a narrow span of control. The downside of this type of structure is that it can often lead to significantly slower communication and decision making. A flat organisational structure has much less levels of hierarchy and wider spans of control. This means employees at each level can communicate with managers more easily and quickly. However, this usually means that workers take more responsibility for decision-making. The benefits of this are that it may encourage a more dedicated and motivated workforce. Typically this type of structure is used in small businesses and start-ups. A benefit of this structure is that it allows the business to change rapidly to respond to the market, customers or competitors. However, this only applies if the staff are well trained and are actually capable of making the changes. Lastly, a matrix structure gathers employees who hold the relevant expertise in order to help the business to meet its goals. The people selected come from different levels and departments within the business. The structure can be used in both hierarchical and flat organisations and are typically used for specific projects. Individual team members may come from different parts of the business, regardless of their usual location in the hierarchy. Obviously once a project is over the matrix will be disbanded.

Classical Management Theory

10:49
Classical Management Theory, broadly speaking, is based upon Henri Fayol, Frederick Taylor, and Max Weber's overlapping management theories. These three management theories came together to form what we generally refer to nowadays as Classical Management Theory. Virtually all areas of organizational studies from management, to business, to organizational communication put these three theorists at the foundation of most modern day organizations for developing theories of 1) Administrative science, 2) Scientific Management, and 3) Bureaucracy. Taken together, they form the basis for how we organizational structures and relationships between managers and employes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1433131234/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1433131234&linkId=6bfd9c333c786d16025c5a7c70a3ef4c The Organizational Communication Channel provides supplemental lessons for traditional, hybrid, and 100% online courses for students and teachers everywhere. Today's guest is Tony Capucille, the youngest CSO in the Fortune 1000, and we're discussing organizational structure. Go to http://bit.ly/hityournumber to follow along with our workbook. 00:45 Introducing Tony Capucille, CSO at Heartland Payment Systems 01:35 The seven dominate sales organizational development models 02:52 The stratification model 06:04 The hunter/farmer model 11:02 The geographic model 13:24 The vertical industry model 19:12 The product overlay model 22:21 The buyer role model 24:55 The organizational model SBI Sales and Marketing Video Podcast Episode Summary: Ready to get organized? It’s spring cleaning here at the SBI Sales and Marketing Podcast, so today we’re joined by B2B sales wizard Tony Capucille, of Heartland Payment Systems, to discuss the pros and cons of the seven dominant sales organization models so you can get started planning your organizational structure and get on the path to hitting your numbers. There’s no one-size-fits-all model when it comes to organizational structure, so in addition to evaluating the pros & cons of each organizational development model, we’re also going to look at what types of organizations they’re best tailored to. For example, maybe you have some clear high priority accounts. If so, perhaps the stratification model, where you segment your accounts by earning and assign talent and resources accordingly, would fit you best. Perhaps you’d be better served by the hunter/farmer organizational structure, where you have a team dedicated to new business and one dedicated to growing your current accounts. Are you a company that focuses in B2B sales in a specific geographic area? The geographic model might be your ticket to success. Then there’s always the benefits of adopting a hybrid approach, like the organizational model, which offsets the strengths of one organizational structure with the strengths of another. Chances are, you’ll likely experiment with a few of these organizational development models before you find the one that best suits you, so what better place to start than here? Learn from the experience of one of the top B2B sales leaders out there to get started on finding the organizational structure that’ll get you to the numbers you need to hit. Ready to Make Your Number? If you want a copy of the workbook mentioned in this video, go to SalesBenchmarkIndex.com/2016-report to see the details of our six step revenue growth method, which covers market research, corporate strategy, product strategy, marketing strategy, sales strategy and talent strategy. Organizational Structure

What is STRUCTURED PRODUCT? What does STRUCTURED PRODUCT mean? STRUCTURED PRODUCT meaning

05:28
What is STRUCTURED PRODUCT? What does STRUCTURED PRODUCT mean? STRUCTURED PRODUCT meaning - STRUCTURED PRODUCT definition - STRUCTURED PRODUCT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In structured finance, a structured product, also known as a market-linked investment, is a pre-packaged investment strategy based on derivatives, such as a single security, a basket of securities, options, indices, commodities, debt issuance or foreign currencies, and to a lesser extent, swaps. The variety of products just described is demonstrative of the fact that there is no single, uniform definition of a structured product. A feature of some structured products is a "principal guarantee" function, which offers protection of principal if held to maturity. For example, an investor invests $100, the issuer simply invests in a risk-free bond that has sufficient interest to grow to $100 after the five-year period. This bond might cost $80 today and after five years it will grow to $100. With the leftover funds the issuer purchases the options and swaps needed to perform whatever the investment strategy. Theoretically an investor can just do this themselves, but the cost and transaction volume requirements of many options and swaps are beyond many individual investors. As such, structured products were created to meet specific needs that cannot be met from the standardized financial instruments available in the markets. Structured products can be used as an alternative to a direct investment, as part of the asset allocation process to reduce risk exposure of a portfolio, or to utilize the current market trend. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 434 (regarding certain prospectus deliveries) defines structured securities as "securities whose cash flow characteristics depend upon one or more indices or that have embedded forwards or options or securities where an investor's investment return and the issuer's payment obligations are contingent on, or highly sensitive to, changes in the value of underlying assets, indices, interest rates or cash flows". The Pacific Stock Exchange defines structured products as "products that are derived from and/or based on a single security or securities, a basket of stocks, an index, a commodity, debt issuance and/or a foreign currency, among other things" and include "index and equity linked notes, term notes and units generally consisting of a contract to purchase equity and/or debt securities at a specific time". Structured product business, as a key part of customer-driven derivatives business, has changed dramatically in recent years. Its modern setup requires comprehensive understanding of: Prevailing regulatory environment, the impact of existing and forthcoming regulations including MIFID II, KYC, PRIIPs - KIDs, etc; Principles of risk-based capital/liquidity requirements specified by Basel 3, FRTB, etc; Structured product manufacture process, effective derivatives business value chain linking trading, structuring, quantitative modelling and risk management; Structured product distribution channels, product wrappers, impact of e-platforms; Structured product payoff features and their risk characteristics; Real-life quantitative pricing models able to handle multi-curve environments, volatility smile/skew, etc. The risks associated with many structured products, especially those that present risks of loss of principal due to market movements, are similar to risks involved with options. The serious risks in options trading are well-established and customers must be explicitly approved for options trading. The U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) suggests that firms "consider" whether purchasers of some or all structured products should be required to go through a similar approval process, so that only accounts approved for options trading would also be approved for some or all structured products.

Product Management Festival Michael Smith - Lessons Learned In Rebuilding a PM Organization

34:08
This presentation was part of "Product Management Festival" a product conference reuniting product experts from all over the world in Zurich for 2 days dedicated to product management, learnings and exchange. "In the start of my new position heading Product Management for SwiftKey, I have learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. I will attempt to share as many of these learnings with new product leaders, to help them create their new org or enhance their existing one, whether they’re a manager of PMs or a PM in a (mostly) functional team. I have instituted product requirements documents to create transparency, redesign how we prioritize projects, realigned the PM organization’s reporting, redefined the role of PMs from solely product owners into value creators, changed multiple communication methods, instituted review processes, helped create a new ideation process, started to train the org and mentor my team… all while making too many mistakes to count. Oh, well – ship and iterate, even within your organization, right?"
