What is buying on margin? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com Opening a margin account allows you to trade on borrowed money. You have to open up a margin account when shorting stocks because you’re borrowing the stock rather than purchasing it. In order to maintain a margin account, you must have collateral to assure the broker that he’ll get his money back. Collateral is something (in this case money) that the borrower gives the lender as protection in case he fails to pay back what he owes. Initial margin: You must keep a minimum amount of your own money in the margin account when you sell the borrowed stock. The usual requirement is 150% of the value of the short sale. Maintenance margin: This is where the risk comes in. You must also maintain a minimum amount of money in the account depending on the current value of the stock you shorted As the price goes up, the maintenance margin requirement goes up, and you’ll need to add more and more money to your account. This is known as a margin call. What is Margin Trading? | Fidelity

Have you always wondered what it means to trade on margin? In this video, you’ll learn what margin trading is and if it is a strategy that could help you achieve your investment goals. To get started with margin trading, visit: https://www.fidelity.com/trading/advanced-trading-tools/margin-trading To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments _____________________________________________________________ What is margin trading? How does it work, and what are some of the benefits and risks? Over the next few minutes, we’ll take away some of the mystery of margin trading and help you decide whether it is a strategy that can help you achieve your investment goals. Margin trading is a form of borrowing that lets you leverage securities you already own to purchase additional securities, protect your account from overdraft or access a convenient line of credit. Margin trading is not designed for any specific type of customer – it may be right for any investor looking for additional leverage in their investment. Here’s an example of how it works: assume you want to buy 1,000 shares of QRS stock at $10 per share, but only have $5,000 in investable cash available. With a margin account, you can use your $5,000 in cash and borrow the other $5,000 on margin to make your purchase. Without margin – with what’s called a cash account – you would need the full $10,000 in cash to make this stock purchase. Now let’s see how a margin loan could impact your investment return. Assume the QRS stock rises in value from $10,000 to $11,000 and you sell it. You would pay back the $5,000 margin loan and realize a profit of $1,000. That’s a 20% return on your $5,000 investment. Without a margin loan, you would have invested $10,000 in cash and realized only a 10% return. While leverage is a powerful tool when the price of the security moves in your favor, it is also important to recognize the downside if the stock price falls. Let’s look at the flip side of the same example. Assume the market value of the QRS stock you purchased with margin for $10,000 falls to $9,000. Your equity – which is the value of your position minus the loan balance of $5,000 – would fall to $4,000. That’s a 20% loss from a 10% decrease in market value. Just like any loan, you will also incur interest charges that begin accruing on the date your trade settles, which is typically two days for a stock. The rate you pay depends on your outstanding margin balance – known as the margin debit balance. The rate is typically calculated using a tiered schedule, meaning the higher your debit balance, the lower the rate you are charged. You should also know that margin loans have no set repayment schedule, as long as you maintain the required level of equity in your account. Let’s shift focus to this equity requirement, along with some other important requirements for margin accounts. In order to buy securities on margin, you must also deposit enough cash or eligible securities to meet the initial margin requirement for your purchase. Typically, this is 50%, which is a requirement set by the Federal Reserve Board. Once you have started buying stock on margin, you are required to maintain a certain level of equity in your margin account. This requirement varies based on the type of security. For example, a stock generally has a maintenance requirement of 25% and is set by the New York Stock Exchange and FINRA. A brokerage firm may impose a higher requirement due to factors including, but not limited to, holding a significant portion of your account in a single security, which is known as a concentrated position. The security you are investing in must be eligible for margin in the first place, and not all securities are eligible. For example, while most stocks and fixed income securities, such as treasuries, are eligible, CDs and money markets are not. You can find out whether a security is eligible, as well as the specific margin requirements for each type of security, at https://www.fidelity.com/margin. Now we’ll put this information together and see how it all works. Margin trading entails greater risk, including but not limited to risk of loss and incurrence of margin interest debt, and is not suitable for all investors. Please assess your financial circumstances and risk tolerance prior to trading on margin. If the market value of the securities in your margin account declines, you may be required to deposit more money or securities in order to maintain your line of credit. If you are unable to do so, Fidelity may be required to sell all or a portion of our pledged assets. Margin credit is extended by National Financial Services, Member NYSE, SIPC. Join our March Trading Contest for your chance at over $8000 in prizes: https://app.wallstreetsurvivor.com/registerto/MarchMarketMoversReport?utm_source=MarketMoversReport&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=MarchContest Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. WARREN BUFFETT- DON'T MAKE THIS TERRIBLE MISTAKE

03:06
Wow! Did you just feel the bomb dropped on you? That was probably the most mind blowing 60 seconds of knowledge that I've ever heard. I don't need superlatives to describe Buffett or his knowledge, as that has been done a million times. However, I never cease to be amazed at the simplicity behind his advice, yet how wise and timeless it truly is. We, as stock investors, sometimes get caught up in the day-to-day gyrations of the market and it's almost hypnotic swings back and forth. You see capital gains dangled in front of you and you see years of dividends that can be captured immediately - and all rational thought gets thrown out the window. The stock market is unique. You may own many assets. You may own your own home, have a paid-off car, maybe some artwork or some farmland. But these items don't have live streaming quotes that parade in front of you Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. eastern standard time. So, you continue to live in the home you're in until it no longer fits your needs, your artwork stays neatly hung up above your mantle and your car continues to get you to and from your work and other daily tasks. Irrational exuberance is hard to replicate when you don't have instant access to buy and sell these items.

Understanding Long and Short Terms in Stock Market Trading

03:58
These terms are more efficient than terms like "buy" and "sell" because they tell your position--your mindset on a particular stock or on the industry. Long: -Positive on the market -You can also be "long" on a particular stock: If you are long Nike, you're expecting it to go up Short: -Negative on the market -You can also be "short" on a particular stock: If you are short Nike, you're expecting it to go down -Selling with the intention to buy the shares back at a lower price Benefits of using "Long"/"Short" vs. "Buy"/"Sell": -If you have 1,000 shares of Nike and you tell someone you sold 500 shares, they could assume you think Nike is going to go down even though you are still positive 500 shares. -If you think a certain stock will go down and you decide to sell all 1,000 shares and later purchase 300 shares, and you tell someone that you bought the 300 shares, it is not clear that you are still negative 700 shares. They may not understand that you think Nike will go down. -"Long" and "short" remove the ambiguity associated with the terms "buy" and "sell." ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE: ★ http://bit.ly/addtradersfly ★ ABOUT TRADERSFLY ★ TradersFly is a place where I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience about the stock market, trading, and investing. How Do You Trade ETFs? | Fidelity

02:53
This video will teach you the basics of trading ETFs. Find out more about exchange-traded funds with us at the https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/investment-products/etf/overview To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fidelityinvestments Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/fidelity Google+: https://plus.google.com/+fidelity LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fidelity-investments ---------------------------------------------------- How do you trade ETFs? It’s a great question. The fact that ETFs trade on an exchange like stocks is one of their biggest selling points. It means you can trade any time the market’s open, rather than waiting until the end of the day like you do with traditional mutual funds. You can also trade an ETF the same way you would trade any stock: You can buy it on margin, if you have that feature in your account. You can even short sell most ETFs. But this liquidity comes with several costs which are important to keep in mind when you’re investing in ETFs. Let’s talk more about two of these costs…The first cost is obvious: the commission. Like with any stock, you have to pay a commission when you buy or sell an ETF. This can really add up if you trade a lot. Imagine, for instance, that each month you invest $1,000 into a basket of five different ETFs. Five times $7.95 per trade is close to 40 dollars, or 4% of your total investment. The good news is that most brokerage firms now offer a certain number of ETFs commission-free. You should consider these carefully, as saving on commissions can be a big deal. The spread is the difference between where someone is willing to buy an ETF (or a stock) at and where someone is willing to sell. For instance, if an ETF is trading at $20/share, you might see that it has an “average spread” of “$0.01.” That means you can buy the ETF for $20.01, but you can only sell it for $20.00. Another ETF might show an average spread of “$0.25,” which means you have to buy the ETF for $20.25, but you can only sell it for $20.00. The smaller the spread, the better. Lastly, it’s smart to use good basic trading practices. In general, you should consider using limit orders which are instructions to buy or sell securities at a specific price or better. But remember, if your limit is set to something unrealistic, or if the market’s moving quickly, you’ll need to monitor and adjust your limits to make sure you get your trade executed and you get the price you want – or better. So let’s review a few key points when it comes to trading ETFs: • Remember commissions. • Look at the spread. • Consider using limit orders. ETFs now make up about a quarter of all the volume on the New York Stock Exchange, so plenty of investors are trading ETFs. With a little care and effort, you can too! Passive Income Dividends: Pay Your Bills with Monthly Dividend Cash

Dividend stocks outperform the rest of the stock market and put cash in your pocket. Dividend investing is safer than other investing strategies and will help you reach your investing goals. In this investing tutorial, I show you how to create a source of passive income from just four dividend investments. You'll not only get constant cash flow every month but will benefit from price appreciation for double-digit returns. Stop chasing stocks and worrying about a stock market crash. Learn how to invest in dividend stocks. This dividend investing tutorial will not only explain how dividends work but will show you a dividend investing strategy that includes monthly cash flow and upside returns potential. Key Differences Between Margin Trading and Operating Leverage

Many traders don’t. In this video, I explain the key differences between margin and leverage, and how you can use them to your advantage. Think of margin as taking a loan of shares. In order to take a negative position, you have to go to your broker and borrow shares on margin, and you pay them back with small interest. When you use margin to short a stock you want to take quick profits, so ideally the margin interest is negligible. So, when should you use margin? When you short sell stock. Leverage is when you borrow money — that you don’t have — from your broker. And different brokers offer different amounts of leverage. So, when do use leverage? I don’t encourage it. It doesn’t matter how prepared you are or how good your research is — any trade can go wrong or against you. When you take a big position, borrow against your money, and take out loans, you're inviting disaster. Don't put yourself in that dangerous position! You can still reach trading goals with a small portion of your account over time. It can be safer and you don't risk disaster.

5 Mistakes Investors Make with ETFs | Fidelity

04:43
In this video, learn about the five biggest mistakes that investors make when buying ETFs, or exchange-traded funds. To learn the basics about ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/investment-products/etf/overview. To get started investing with ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/etfs/overview To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fidelityinvestments Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/fidelity Google+: https://plus.google.com/+fidelity LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fidelity-investments --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let’s talk about the five biggest mistakes investors can make when buying exchange-traded funds. ETFs can be good tools for investors - when used appropriately. But with any investment, there are always things to watch out for. Number 1: Buying the Hot New Thing More than 100 new ETF products launch each year, many of them chasing the latest hot trend. Cloud computing, driverless cars, 3-D printing … you name it, there’s an ETF for that. Buying into the latest hot theme might make you big returns, but take care: These product launches may come after there has been a run up in the market. Buying at the top can be painful on the way down. Number 2: Buying Something You Don’t Understand The only thing worse than chasing the hottest trend is buying something you don’t understand. ETFs have taken institutional strategies and made them push-button-easy for everyday investors to access. Want access to commodity futures? There’s an ETF for that. 300% leverage? 200% short? Interest-rate carry plays? Yes to all. But just because you can buy something easily doesn’t mean you should. All of these funds may be good tools, but only if you know how to use them correctly. Number 3: Thinking All ETFs Are Created Equal Consider China. At the start of 2014, there were more than a dozen broad-based China ETFs. For example, had you chosen PGJ, the PowerShares Golden Dragon China ETF, at the start of the year, you would have lost more than 7% of your money. Had you instead chosen ASHR, the Deutsche Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF, you would have earned a 51% return. Both are “China ETFs.” Both can provide big, diversified portfolios. But ASHR has significant exposure to Chinese Ashares—largely consumer-focused stocks listed and traded on the domestic Chinese market— which performed spectacularly well in 2014. Don’t assume all ETFs are created equal. Just because two ETFs cover the same market doesn’t mean they provide the same exposure or returns. There’s no guarantee which fund will perform better in the future. But if you wanted to invest last year in the growth of the Chinese consumer and the domestic investor base there, a little bit of research would have gone a long way. Number 4: Trading…Just Because You Can Trading is central to ETFs. It’s right there in the name. But just because you can trade an ETF intraday doesn’t mean you should. Emotions are often an investor’s worst enemy. You zig when you should zag; you sell at the bottom and buy at the top. We all do sometimes. The trouble is ETFs make that even easier than traditional mutual funds. ETFs’ intraday liquidity can be great when you need to get into or out of the market quickly. But those situations are rare. Number 5: Only Using Market Orders When you do invest, consider using a limit order versus a market order. Market orders are instructions to buy or sell securities at the best possible price right now. That can work well for the most liquid ETFs, but as you move beyond the top dozen ETFs, you can find yourself getting trades executed at prices you don’t really want. Using a limit order means you agree to buy an ETF at a certain price or below, and sell it at a certain price or above. A limit order puts the control back in your hands and can help you set the price on your terms. Learn from these common mistakes to help avoid making them yourself. BROKE? How to Get Started Trading Penny Stocks With Just $100

05:35
For more info on Trading Penny Stocks, check out Tim's Epic Guide here: https://bit.ly/2rJjKfz Is it possible to trade penny stocks with just $100? Subscribe here to get INSTANT alerts when I post a new video outlining my penny stock trading techniques: https://goo.gl/poGZTm 0:10 How should you invest $100, if you had only $100. I would say buy yourself a nice sushi meal and enjoy it 'cause you're broke and you don't have any future whatsoever. 0:30 I'm kidding about that, you have some future but you have to save up. You're not gonna be able to do much with $100. 1:00 You can't cheat success so, my top student started with $1500 now he's over six million. I started at like 12 thousand, several of my students started with like two or three thousand. You need a few thousand dollars so whatever you can do, scrounge together that money.* 2:30 That said, if you are broke and you only have $100, does that mean that you shouldn't study, you should just ignore the whole stock market and all the finance, no, because somehow, some way, I think that you will be able to have a thousand or two thousand dollars in your life at some point where you can actually trade and grow that money using a normal, not so risky strategy like what I teach. But, even if you do have that money, you don't necessarily have that knowledge. So when you are totally broke, you have nothing but time. Okay, you have no excuses, you obviously have no job, you probably have no life either so you have a lot of time to study. 3:30 So that way at least, even if you're broke you can get smart so when you do save up a few thousand dollars, you'll have already prepared and you'll have that knowledge ready and you'll still have to keep studying 'cause the market's always changing, you have to adapt. But at least then, you will have a foundation that most people do not have. I have a lot of trust fund like, kids who are you know, start with like fifty or a hundred or two hundred fifty thousand dollars and they're like, oh Tim, this is child's play, I'll definitely become your next millionaire soon and I don't have that much to go. 4:00 The people who start big are terrible because they take their money for granted, they don't study, they don't put in the time and effort to actually do what it takes to grow a small account, they ignore my advice to start smaller rather than bigger, so be grateful if you're broke. Be grateful if you have $100 to your name, there's nowhere to go but up. 4:30 Somehow you're watching this so you have internet access. I don't know if you're bumming free internet at McDonald's or if you're at the library or if you're at the Starbucks. You know, maybe you're outside Starbucks and you're begging for some change but maybe the WiFi is like going through the door so you still have WiFi so as you're begging for change you can also study so now you're multitasking. That's what you're gonna have to learn to do as you grow richer, okay? And remember, when you are broke, there is almost nothing worse than your current situation. 5:00 No one takes you seriously anyways right now. So it's your job to study up. It's your job to move yourself up and do whatever it takes to get a few thousand dollars and get that knowledge so that you can grow the few thousand into fifty thousand, a hundred thousand, a million, two million, six million like my top students and I do. But first, watch all my videos, watch them twice, watch them three times, okay?* For more info on Trading Penny Stocks, check out Tim's Epic Guide here: https://bit.ly/2rJjKfz * Results may not be typical and may vary from person to person. If you follow a proper value investor approach to investing your money then you know that before you ever buy a stock you need to understand the business and calculate the fair value. So should you just go online and place an order with your broker if the stock is around fair value? No!...not exactly. There is a 3 step process you should follow when you decide to buy a stock. First and foremost you need to buy the stock only when the price is below fair value. That's margin of safety. Now the amount of safety you require will depend on your comfort level with your calculations of fair value and how well you understand the business. So if you are investing in a company that is new, untested and your calculations are optimistic, you should give yourself a larger margin of safety, sometimes only buying when the stock price is half the fair value. If you are investing in a company that is established, has a great track record and you understand the business thoroughly, then you might only require a 10-20% margin of safety. But whatever the case may be, always buy with a margin of safety, your calculations are not perfect and they never will be because not even the accountants or the CEO can predict the buying habits of their customers. Never ever buy a complete position with one order. Meaning, if you want to invest $4,000 in a company, break it up into 4 equal purchases. Once a stock you like meets your margin of safety price, place an initial order for $1000. Your remaining 3 purchases should be at price levels below your initial order. You might buy your 2nd, 3rd and 4th purchases every time the stock drops another 5%, or maybe you will decide on a fixed dollar amount. It's really up to you to decide, and you can study charts to see how the stock reacted in prior drops to see what your drop percentage will be. Now, this means sometimes you won't fill a complete position, but that's ok, it most likely means you're making money in the position you currently hold and that's a good thing. You might also say "why would I buy a stock when it keeps going down." Well, you did your homework right, and you believe this is a great company with a bright future, so doesn't it make sense to get as big of a discount as possible? You should be really happy when the price keeps going down because that means you can get more and more shares of a great company at a great price. The third step is to never stop buying. What I mean by this is that let's say you established a full position in Starbucks one year ago, and the company has done very well fundamentally, but the stock has not followed suit. Because you are a shareholder you continue to calculate the fair value of all the stocks you own every time they release earnings and you notice that the price of the shares are very undervalued and they meet your margin of safety threshold now. Well, if you have money to invest and the price meets your requirements from the first two buying steps then continue to buy more. It only makes sense to buy more shares of a company you understand when they are selling at a discount. I hope this lesson reinforced an obvious idea that buying something great when it has a discount is an amazing thing. Now go get your discount.
