Arctic Sea Ice Loss : What's the latest?

16:41
NOAA released their 2018 Arctic Report Card back in December with some fairly stark warnings about the status of that region. Since then we've had further updates suggesting that this year could be one of the most precarious for Summer Arctic Sea Ice. This week we take a look at what it's all about. Blue Ocean Event : Game Over?

17:55
A Blue Ocean Event, or Ice-Free Arctic, is the source of almost fever pitch speculation in the climate science world. The consequences of the disappearance of sea ice from the arctic ocean, however briefly, at the end of a summer melt season some time in the not too distant future, are potentially very ominous for the way we organise our human socio-economic structures today. This week, we consider what those consequences may look like. Oldest sea ice in the arctic starts to melt

01:44
Sea ice north of Greenland - some of the oldest and thickest in the Arctic - has broken up for the second time this year, a phenomenon never seen before. Satellite images show ice melting around the coast of the island closest to the North Pole, opening up waters that are usually frozen, even in summer. Antarctica is losing ice at an accelerating rate. How much will sea levels rise?

09:41
The frozen continent of Antarctica contains the vast majority of all freshwater on Earth. Now that ice is melting at an accelerating rate, in part because of climate change. What does this transformation mean for coastal communities across the globe? William Brangham reports from Antarctica on the troubling trend of ice loss and how glaciers can serve as a climate record from the past. What melting sea ice means for life in the Arctic

06:13
Light is flooding into the Arctic. There will be winners and losers. That’s what brought an international group of scientists to the Barents Sea to investigate how plant and animal life will adapt to the new normal. Two key factors that govern the arctic ecosystem are rapidly changing: ice and light. The Arctic is the fastest warming place on earth, and ice that used to form on the surface of the ocean is vanishing. That’s threatening species large and small that rely on it, but it’s also created an opportunity. Less ice means more light reaches the underwater ecosystem, benefiting the algae that anchors it as well as apex predators like whales and seals. This video is part 1 of a three-part series on the changing Arctic. Arctic Sea Ice Maximum 2018

03:47
According to analysis by NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the Arctic sea ice maximum extent was reached on 17 March 2018. The Arctic sea ice cover peaked at 14.48 million square kilometers (5.59 million square miles), making it the second lowest maximum on record, at about 60,000 square kilometers (23,000 square miles) higher than the record low maximum reached on 7 March 2017 (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8egdMApWOk&list=PLpGTA7wMEDFjmZDVZNiCpdwP-mEOPNIzm ) The yellow line in the comparison indicates the 30 year average maximum extent calculated from 1981 through 2010. Scientists Baffled By Antarctic Sea Ice's Rapid Disappearance

01:01
Earth is getting warmer, and everything’s melting. But according to Gizmodo's Earther, things are a bit more complicated on the other side of the planet. It seems the latest Antarctic sea ice slump has scientists scratching their heads. The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports Antarctica rang in the new year with record-low levels of sea ice. On January 1st, sea ice covered a paltry 2.11 million square miles of water in the Southern Ocean rimming the continent. That's 726,000 square miles below the long-term average for that date. And while climate change may be partly behind the drop, scientists are puzzled as to why it's happening the second year in a row. https://earther.gizmodo.com/antarctic-sea-ice-is-in-record-low-territory-again-and-1831498131 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

For more information, visit http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/antarctic-sea-ice-reaches-new-record-maximum http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/qa-what-is-happening-with-antarctic-sea-ice The Arctic and the Antarctic are regions that have a lot of ice and acts as air conditioners for the Earth system. This year, Antarctic sea ice reached a record maximum extent while the Arctic reached a minimum extent in the top ten lowest since satellite records began. One reason we are seeing differences between the Arctic and the Antarctic is due to their different geographies. As for what's causing the sea increase in the Antarctic, scientists are also studying ocean temperatures, possible changes in wind direction and, overall, how the region is responding to changes in the climate. Arctic Sea-Ice Collapse Accelerating. What Next?

15:01
As Arctic sea-ice plunges to record lows, many pundits are calling for a near-term Blue Ocean Event in which the entire Arctic Ocean is essentially devoid of ice. In this video analysis (and next), I chat time frames for increasing duration of the open ocean state, from 1 month to 3 to 5 and then to year-round. I emphasize the overlooked but equally important loss of terrestrial snow cover to make the Arctic a very dark and hot place. I discuss changes to jet streams, including a 17 degree latitude shift south in its center of rotation, and changes to weather drivers from jet-stream to monsoonal, even in the Arctic. Antarctic sea ice

01:09
Antarctic sea ice has shrunk to its second lowest extent on record, with the latest satellite data showing a total 2.15 million km2 surrounding the icy continent. Scientists at the Australian Antarctic Division, Antarctic Climate and Ecosystem CRC and Bureau of Meteorology have been tracking the sea ice via daily satellite observations since the 1970s. Antarctic sea ice forms each year when the ocean surrounding the continent freezes. It plays an important role both in the global climate system and as a key habitat for a wide range of Antarctic animals, from micro-organisms to great whales. Sea ice conditions also impact shipping and logistical operations in the Southern Ocean. For more info: http://www.antarctica.gov.au/news/2018/antarctic-sea-ice-shrinks-to-second-lowest-minimum.

Arctic Sea Ice, Climate and Weather Analysis for November 30, 2018

In the most recent update of our ongoing Arctic climate analysis we find contextual observations that support science produced by Dr Michael E Mann and Dr Jennifer Francis indicating a polar amplification based influence on Northern Hemisphere weather patterns. Patterns that relate both to the recent severe western fires, recent shifts to heavy rainfall, and the tendency for ridge patterns to form in the western U.S. and trough patterns to form in the east. New article making the MSM news rounds, now 12 foot thick sea ice around Greenland in summer is "normal" and because there is is much more ice than predicted its because of shifting winds, not cooling Atlantic water temperatures or the water pulse of cooler water under the ice. 2018 Arctic Sea Ice Maximum

01:53
On March 17, 2018 Arctic sea ice reached its annual maximum extent, at second lowest in the 39-year satellite record. The maximum is a natural part of the Arctic’s seasons. Sea ice extent in the Arctic shrinks in the summer, reaching a minimum extent in September. In the winter, temperatures drop and extent rises, reaching a maximum around March. The minimum extent has been declining in the past decade. Recently, NSIDC has seen that maximum extents aren’t what they used to be either. Including 2018, the four lowest maximums in the satellite record have occurred in the past four years. NSIDC director Mark Serreze walks us through this unsettling change and its causes. Credit: C. Williams/NSIDC For more information about NSIDC, please see https://nsidc.org. Sea ice decline "unprecedented," according to Arctic Report Card

00:42
The annual Arctic Report Card says the pace of "sea-ice decline and surface ocean warming is unprecedented in at least the last 1,500 years." Scientists estimate that over the last 15 years, the Greenland ice sheet lost up to 270 billion tons of mass each year. That contributes to rising sea levels. Older Arctic Sea Ice Disappearing

Arctic sea ice has not only been shrinking in surface area in recent years, it’s becoming younger and thinner as well. In this animation, where the ice cover almost looks gelatinous as it pulses through the seasons, cryospheric scientist Dr. Walt Meier of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center describes how the sea ice has undergone fundamental changes during the era of satellite measurements. Editor’s note: This visualization incorrectly identifies the oldest ice as being 5+ years old, when it would be more accurate to say 4+ years old. Arctic Sea Ice Minimum Volumes 1979-2018

00:34
Latest visualization of the startling decline of Arctic Sea Ice up to 2018, showing the minimum volume reached every September since 1979, set on a map of New York with a 10km grid to give an idea of scale. It is clear that the trend of Arctic sea ice decline indicates that it'll soon be ice-free for an increasingly large part of the year, with consequences for the climate. The rate of ice loss in the Arctic is staggering. Since 1979, the volume of Summer Arctic sea ice has declined by more than 80% and accelerating faster than scientists believed it would, or even could melt. I also composed and played the piano music, "Ice Dreams". A longer version played live can be found here: https://youtu.be/_miBCygvO4Y About the data: Sea Ice Volume is calculated using the Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS, Zhang and Rothrock, 2003) developed at APL/PSC. Source data for this graph is available from http://psc.apl.washington.edu/wordpress/research/projects/arctic-sea-ice-volume-anomaly/ More information: The image first appeared in still form on Think Progress, and I decided to try to bring it to life over the following weeks: http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2013/02/14/1594211/death-spiral-bombshell-cryosat-2-confirms-arctic-sea-ice-volume-has-collapsed/ An earlier video also featured on BBC's Newsnight: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19496674 I produced the animation using hand-written perl and php code to create povray scripts, and scheduling task distribution using MySQL between numerous disparate linux servers working in parallel to render 1000 frames at 1920 x 1080 resolution. This time the "farm" used a total of 62 processor cores over the space of 3 days. I even got a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ to help out, and contributed 11 frames taking about 3 hours each. Every little helped! On completion, ffmpeg combined the individual frames and music into a high quality mp4 video.
