It has been called the world's most deadly migration route. The sea crossing from Libya to Europe has claimed more than two thousand lives so far this year - as desperate men women and children crowd onto small boats - in the hope of reaching Europe. They're put there people smugglers - who exploit them for huge sums. Most of them are picked up by charity boats... before being taken to ports in Italy. The whole process has become increasingly controversial, with the charities being forced to defend their actions. The BBC's Joe Inwood spent nearly a month on board the biggest ship in the region, run by Doctors Without Borders... this is a special 360 film that allows you to explore how a rescue happens. The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) is a Charity that carries out whale shark research and fosters community focused conservation initiatives in the Maldives. They normally spend hours at sea looking for Sharks but on the 14th September they came across a Ghost net with a Juvenile Olive Ridley entangled inside. Volunteers worked quickly to remove the Olive Ridley from the Net, and a successful release was achieved :) They also managed to send all the information about the turtle and the ghost net to the Olive Ridley Project where analyses on the type of net found can be determined. Unfortunately because the Ghost net was wrapped around the front flipper, there is very little movement when it finally swims away, however this has been observed numerous times and when they go into rehab the flipper makes a full recovery. in addition Wild Olive Ridley have been observed at sea with amputations to flippers from previous entanglements with ghost nets, these are also able to make a full recovery: Great work everyone :) Check out the work of MWSP here: http://maldiveswhalesharkresearch.org/ https://www.facebook.com/MWSRP Check out the Olive Ridley Project here: http://oliveridleyproject.org/ https://www.facebook.com/OliveRidleyProject

This short video produced by IFAW shows the dramatic rescue of a gray seal in Chatham, Cape Cod that had fishing net severely entangled around its neck. This disentanglement marks the first successful seal rescue on the East Coast using remote sedation. This innovative method was developed on the West coast by The Marine Mammal Center to assist entangled California sea lions. The remote sedation seen here consisted of darting the entangled gray seal from a distance of approximately 60 feet and then tracking the seal as it flushed into the water. The Marine Mammal Center has devised a novel method of incorporating a small acoustic transmitter in the dart to allow responders to track the seal while waiting for the sedative drugs to take effect. Once sedated, the seal was captured, examined by a veterinarian, disentangled, medically treated, and released. Prior to release, the disentangled gray seal was affixed with a small, temporary satellite tag that will allow IFAW staff the opportunity to track the seal over the coming months to monitor its recovery and document the healing of the deep lacerations caused by the entanglement. Entanglements are one of the greatest human-caused threats to pinnipeds. Often caused by fishing gear or human sources of marine debris, entanglements cause life-threatening constrictions around the necks and bodies of these marine mammals. As seal populations re-establish in New England, there is risk of an increased number of seals becoming entangled. IFAW has been working to develop a safe and effective method of capturing and disentangling seals. This landmark sedation, capture, disentanglement, and release is a significant step forward in responding to entangled seals locally, but also has national and international implications in addressing entanglements. The information gathered on drug efficacy, capture tools and techniques may even be used in the future for seals from threatened or endangered populations in other parts of the world. This amazing rescue could not have been possible without the support of The Marine Mammal Center, Center for Coastal Studies, National Marine Life Center and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. All activities were conducted under NMFS permit # 18786

Spain's Maritime Rescue Service has released footage of their recent migrants rescue operation in the Alboran Sea. The video shows one of Spain's coast guard ships taking migrants from a dinghy. It was part of Saturday's wider operation that rescued more than 700 people from 25 small boats. Earlier this month Madrid opened its port to the charity ship Aquarius, after Italy and Malta blocked the ship from docking. Also on Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The two leaders agreed more detention centers are needed in Europe, to deal with the influx of migrants. More than 200 refugees and migrants have reached land after being stuck at sea while European leaders argued about their fate. The charity ship Lifeline has docked in Malta, but only after eight countries agreed to take a share of the migrants. After being allowed to dock, the ship is also to be impounded. The Maltese government says it is not registered as a search and rescue ship, has failed to obey the orders of the Italian coastguard, and often switched off its transponder to disguise its position, raising suspicion that the ship could be deliberately helping smugglers. http://www.dw.com/en/libyan-coast-guard-abandoned-migrants-to-die-in-mediterranean-says-rescue-charity/a-44717621 Spanish sea rescue charity Proactiva Open Arms said on Tuesday it had found one woman alive, clinging to the wreckage of a destroyed migrant boat about 80 nautical miles off the Libyan coast. They also found two people who had died: another woman and a boy aged about five. Proactiva Open Arms posted images and videos of the wreckage and victims on social media, blaming Libya's coast guard, along with a merchant ship sailing nearby, for failing to help the migrants. Libya takes over from Italy on rescuing shipwrecked migrants On Twitter, the organization's founder Oscar Camps accused the Libyan coast guard of destroying the boat and abandoning the trio at sea because they did not want to board the Libyan ship along with some 158 other intercepted migrants. The last charity search-and-rescue ship aiding migrants in the central Mediterranean has had its registration revoked. The Aquarius 2, operated by non-governmental organizations Doctors Without Borders and SOS Mediterranean, is currently at sea and heading for the French port of Marseille. As Henry Ridgwell reports, over 1,600 migrants have died this year making the crossing – and the charities say more lives will now be put at risk. More than 2,000 migrants have drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea already in 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration. As the Mediterranean migrant crisis continues in the face of apparent government inaction, a private organization has stepped in to help. Founded by American millionaire Christopher Catrambone and his Italian wife Regina Catrambone, the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) aims to provide search and rescue assistance to the thousands of people fleeing conflict and economic hardship in the Middle East and Africa. Italy has begun implementing controversial rules for humanitarian groups operating in the Mediterranean Sea. The move comes as at least five aid organisations have refused to sign the code of conduct. The rules affect boats involved in migrant rescues. And include a ban on sending light signals and a ban on transferring rescued migrants to other ships. The new rules come as Italy claims some charities have been encouraging potential migrants to make the dangerous journey to Europe. However, organisations like Doctors Without Borders is concerned the rules could lead to a decrease in the efficiency of its rescue teams in the Mediterranean, which would lead to further deaths. Search and rescue ship Aquarius, which has saved tens of thousands of migrants from drowning in the Mediterranean, has ended its operations, said Médecins Sans Frontières, the charity that runs the ship. MSF and its partner SOS Mediterranee said they were forced to terminate its operations due to a “smear campaign” by European governments. 'Race against time': flag revoked for Aquarius migrant rescue ship Read more The ship has been blocked at the French port of Marseilles since it lost its Panamanian registration at the end of September. The Aquarius was the last charity rescue ship operating off of Libya. Last year there were five groups running rescue ships. “This is a dark day. Not only has Europe failed to provide dedicated search and rescue capacity, it has also actively sabotaged others’ attempts to save lives,” Vickie Hawkins, head of MSF UK, said in a statement. “The end of Aquarius means more lives lost at sea; more avoidable deaths that will go unwitnessed and unrecorded. It really is a case of ’out of sight out of mind’ for UK and European leaders as men, women and children perish,” she said. Nearly 5,000 migrants died in 2016 while trying to cross the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East, fleeing war and poverty, according to the UN agency International Organization for Migration (IOM). The number of migrants reaching Italy has fallen sharply since last year as smuggling networks inside Libya, a key departure point for mainly sub-Saharan Africans, have been disrupted and the European Union has stepped up efforts to increase Libyan coastguard patrols. Data by IOM showed that more than 2,000 people have drowned so far this year. talian magistrates in November accused MSF of illegally dumping toxic waste at ports in southern Italy and ordered Aquarius to be impounded. The charity denied any wrongdoing and accused Italy of seeking to criminalise humanitarian search-and-rescue missions. The public prosecutor’s office in Catania, Sicily, said it believed crew on the Aquarius, and its sister ship VOS Prudence, had illegally dumped potentially dangerous medical waste among ordinary rubbish between January 2017 and May 2018.

The migration debate playing out across Europe has taken another turn. Spain says it will take in a woman who was discovered stranded in the Mediterranean and the bodies of another woman and a young child found nearby. They were picked up by sea rescue charity Proactiva Open Arms. It accuses the Libyan Coast Guard of abandoning them and criticised Italy for shutting its ports. In response, Italy's Interior Minister claimed the charity had lied about the circumstances in which they found the migrants at sea and denied any suggestion it had blocked the boat.

Rescue of scared homeless dog, heartbroken and sad, living on the cold streets. This sweet old dog was found roaming near a railroad station. It was too risky to attempt a rescue there, we were worried that he could run and get hit by a passing train, so we followed him, trying to redirect him towards a safer place. It was quite a marathon as he ran away each time we approached him. But he eventually understood we are only trying to help him, or maybe the smell of the yummy treats finally reached his nose. He was limping and we also noticed a scar near his left eye so we took him straight to the veterinary clinic. When we scanned him for a microchip we discovered that he had an owner! We hoped a happy dog-owner reunion would follow, but when we contacted the registered owner he told us he does not want the dog back and asked us to take him. Apparently, Bobi (this is the name given by his owner) ran away from home and traveled quite a long distance, being found approximately 10 miles away from his home. We’ll never know why he left home and why he wasn’t wanted anymore, but we do not want to judge anyone, we’re just thankful that we were able to save him. Bobi is 9 years old, medium sized, approximately 18 kg (39 lbs), fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered. His vision is completely lost in the left eye, an old scar located near the eye indicates that he had been injured there, possibly hit, so that’s how he lost his sight in that eye. But the good news is that vision in the right eye is not affected and he sees well with it. He’s very gentle, loving and obedient and he is still playful and curious. It's like he's living now the puppyhood he missed. Bobi is an old dog in his golden years and he needs a caring adoptive family to offer him a home, a FOREVER home this time, where he can spend his remaining years happy and loved. He is in Howl Of A Dog’s care in Romania, but please note that we also allow international adoptions and he can travel to the USA, Canada or Europe. After having an evening walk along the sea front in Scarborough, we came across the Scarborough Rowing Club in the water, and watched the RNLI Life Boat crew doing some work on the beach. We soon saw that they were preparing to bring the Lifeboat back into the station, after a days exercise in the North Sea around Scarborough. Having never observed how the boat is brought out of the sea and back into the lifeboat station, we decided to hang around and watch them winch the boat out of the water. The crew use an amazing submersible tractor that can drive underwater equally as well as it does on dry land. It was amazing to watch this machine in action and how useful it is in helping the crews perform their duties in saving lives at sea. The machine clearly has a lot of power and we certainly enjoyed out little stop off on our walk. :) Enjoy. From Wikipedia: The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, as well as on selected inland waterways. The RNLI was founded on 4 March 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, with Royal Patronage from George IV. It was given the prefix "Royal" and its current name in 1854 by Queen Victoria. It has official charity status in both the United Kingdom and Ireland. The RNLI operates 444 lifeboats (332 are on station, 112 are in the relief fleet), from 236 lifeboat stations around the coasts of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The RNLI's lifeboats rescued an average of 22 people a day in 2011. RNLI lifeboats launched 8,321 times in 2012, rescuing 7,912 people. The RNLI's lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved more than 140,000 lives since 1824. RNLI lifeguards placed on selected beaches around England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands attended to 14,519 incidents in 2011. The RNLI's Operations Department defines "rescues" and "lives saved" differently. In 2012, the RNLI Lifeguards service was expanded to cover more than 180 beaches. RNLI lifeguards are paid by the appropriate town or city council, while the RNLI provides their equipment and training. In contrast, most lifeboat crew members are unpaid volunteers. The RNLI is funded by voluntary donations and legacies (together with tax reclaims). In 2011, the RNLI's income was £162.9M, while its expenditure was £140.6M.

Less than two months after multiple EU nations refused to allow rescue boat Aquarius to dock on their shores, the humanitarian ship is again faced with closed ports.... This time, with 141 people on board. The vessel rescued the distressed migrants off the coast of Libya last week... The humanitarian organizations operating the ship accused the Libyan coastguard of refusing to inform them that nearby boats were in distress... a decision they say has disasterous consequences. SOT, Aloys Vimard Doctors Without Borders Project Coordinator: "Our concern is that now it is discouraging ship masters from their duty, because it`s a duty of any ship master at sea to rescue people that are in distress at sea. So today we can see that ships are changing their course not to render assistance".Since early 2016, the Aquarius has helped close to 30 000 migrants at sea... many of them were brought safely to Italy until this summer, when Rome shut its ports to all NGO rescue boats. The Italian government has instead encouraged Libyan authorities to carry out rescue operations. On Saturday, via his Facebook account, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said his government''s new approach to migration has already borne its fruitSOT Giuseppe Conte: In the first two months of our governance, compared with the same period last year, boat arrivals have deacreased by 85%. In June Italy and Malta refused to let the Aquarius, with 629 people on board, dock on their shores... provoking an EU-wide crisis over the bloc''s migration policy. Though Spain finally agreed to take in the boat, this time around a solution is yet to be found.
