28) South Seas Bubble of 1720: the First Major Manipulation of Financial Markets

05:47
Notes for Economics www.saseassociates.com Next, we will look at the British crisis known as the South Seas Bubble, a crisis that stands as the first major manipulation of financial markets. Until the Crash of 1929, this bubble endured as the classic example of opportunistic self-enhancement. The South Seas Company was formed by Parliament as a British trade concession in 1711. This was a monopoly for areas of the Pacific that were under British rule. The company was a startup firm with no sales and no earnings, only with great prospects. The real prospects centered on market manipulation and insider trading. In the early eighteenth century, Britain had entered its period of imperial prosperity. However, stock ownership remained a matter of privilege that was limited mostly to the aristocracy. Furthermore, women could not inherit land, although females could own stock at that time. A pent-up demand for stock developed because of wide accessibility along with the added benefit that dividends that were paid out of profits went untaxed. Parliament granted the enterprise a monopoly concession along with loaned capitalization of ₤10 million pounds sterling. Publicly unknown at the time, members of Parliament had bought capitalization bonds for South Seas at ₤55. Once the company went public, these investors exchanged each unit for ₤100 of stock in the South Seas Company. However, its inexperienced directors quickly entered into the slave trade, a venture at which they failed. South Seas maintained its stock price in the market despite this misfortune as well as a war with Spain, shipments of goods that were misrouted and lost, and bonuses paid to the directors in a form that diluted the value of shares. Nevertheless, the situation improved in 1719. Britain signed the Peace of Utrecht, a treaty with Spain that enabled British trade with Mexico. Given this newfound prosperity, the directors of South Seas offered to fund the entire British national debt of ₤31 million. Stock prices doubled. Five days after the bill became law, South Seas offered a new issue of stock at ₤300 per share. The company offered a second issue at ₤400. This one rose to ₤550 per share within a month. The directors offered yet another at 10% down, with no payments for one year. Share price continued to rise to ₤1,000. The feasibility of the scheme became secondary as the Greater-Fool Theory took over—speculators would purchase shares, prices would rise, secondary buyers would appear, and the speculators would profit in the after-market. In the summer of 1720, the directors liquidated their own shares. The news of their divestiture leaked out quickly. Share price collapsed and a market panic ensued. The British government narrowly averted the complete erosion of public credit. In response to this threat, Parliament passed the Bubble Act that forbade issuance of stock certificates in any company. In addition, Britain implemented other measures in order to restore confidence. The government confiscated the estates of company directors in an attempt to remunerate South Seas Company investors. Other propositions put forth in Parliament included placing bankers in sacks filled with snakes and throwing them into the Thames River! In summarizing this bubble, let us analyze the events. First, there was a pent-up demand for investment opportunities. Second, the government sponsored a trade-concession monopoly. Third, inexperienced management failed to create any real value for the company. Fourth, war and the entry of new competition exerted external pressures on the firm. Fifth, graft occurred, which involved members of Parliament in an effort to pass legislation that was advantageous to a private company. Sixth, dilutive stock dividends and new (dilutive) stock issues were sold on generous terms and margins while insiders manipulated trading that included the dumping of shares.

euronews Life - Thailand: sun, sea and a booming business economy

05:12
http://www.euronews.com/ Thailand evokes images of endless, sandy beaches but there is a lot more to this South East Asian country. In the first edition of our four part series 'Thai Life', we take a look at the kingdom's business spirit. To find out why Thailand is such a popular investment market, euronews headed to its capital, Bangkok. With a population of around 10 million, it can sometimes feel like all the city's inhabitants are on the streets at once. Bangkok is at the heart of the Thai economy with 90% of the country's export trade taking place in the capital. The Asian Kingdom is also becoming an evermore attractive production location for foreign businesses, which are attracted by its stable infrastructure and tax incentives. Stiebel Eltron, a housing technology manufacturer is one of the 500 German companies to start up operations in Thailand. It learned early on that doing business 'Thai style' requires a great deal of cultural awareness and tact; something the company's Export Manager, Holger Palla knows all too well: "In Germany you can raise your voice (literally bang your fist on the table) and speak more openly and direct. Maybe even a little too loud and direct. In Thailand you can't do that at all. You have to be careful not to embarrass other people -- they shouldn't lose face so you have to show respect and proceed more subtly." Yupa Tassri, General Manager at Siebel Eltron takes care of the staff's needs, bridging any cultural divides: "In Thai most people respect Buddha, so the Germans will never understand how we respect him. "My main challenge is to mix and match between Thai and German mindsets, to make sure that they understand each other and work together in harmony." Teamwork plays a vital role, ensuring the working day runs smoothly, as Roland Hoehn, Asian Pacific Director at Siebel Eltron explains: "Thai's like to work in groups. They want to have Sanuuk once in a while. Sanuuk is probably best translated as fun and is simply a part of the Thai culture. If they aren't having fun, they leave the company. So harmony and fun are important." For foreign companies, the benefits of working in Thailand, seem to outweigh concerns voiced by some businesses over bureaucracy and a lack of qualified labour. John Svengren, the Executive Director of the European Asean Business Centre believes the key to doing business successfully in Thailand is taking the time to build bonds with colleagues: "Relationships mean a lot more for one thing. You don't come to an Asian country and do business on the first day. You need to have relationships, particularly if you're in joint venture operations with Thai partnerships. It can take years to develop confidence and trust." This is not only true for the industrial sector but also for tourism, another important area for foreign investors, especially European. This year alone, more than 20 million visitors are expected, making up around 6% of the nation's total economy. The tourism industry has been trying to attract new target groups and green tourism is becoming increasingly popular. At Karon beach in Phuket, a Swiss run hotel was the first on the island to receive the Green Globe certificate for sustainability. The hotel's General Manager at the Mövenpick resort, Hansreudi Frutiger talks to euronews about his accomplishment: "We began with the Green Globe one year ago. We wanted to explain to our Thai employees what this means to us; that we want to help the world stay as it was and is. We've a small garden where we grow tomatoes and cucumbers alongside various Thai herbs and spices which our chefs use in our kitchen's dishes." Thailand is a country of contrast. While it is finding success putting itself on the world business map - tradition and heritage remain an integral part of life. The Ultimate Candlestick Patterns Trading Course

38:11
Learn how candlestick patterns can help you identify high probability trading setups — so you can profit in bull and bear markets. SUBSCRIBE: https://bit.ly/2MsGjRR If you want more actionable Forex trading tips and strategies, go to https://www.tradingwithrayner.com **FOLLOW RAYNER** Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/forextradingwithrayner Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/rayner_teo My YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2EFg5VN 0:50 To get started is what is a candlestick pattern? Okay, so a candlestick pattern is essentially a method, right? Of reading a price chart. It originated back in Japan, right? That's the history. And the key component of a candlestick chart is that it shows you four things. It shows you the opening price, the price, the high of the session, the low of the session and the closing price, 2:00 How do you read a candlestick pattern? Or how do you read a candlestick chart? So remember there are only four things, the open, the high, the low, and the close. You can see that the candles are usually typically two colors, either you know, green, red, or perhaps it can be black, white. Sometimes you can even you know, change the color if you want, but generally, the most common color is green and red. 9:00 So now, I want to walk you through something what we call combining candlestick patterns. Because candlestick patterns, they are essentially just showing you the price of the different sessions. And if you think about this, right? This can be combined, right? 12:48 So now, how not to trade candlestick patterns, right? So now you know how to read candlestick pattern, you even know how to combine them, how do you not trade candlestick patterns? Because this is a mistake. 15:00 So how should you trade candlestick patterns? I would like to introduce to you something what I call the TAE framework. The TAE TAE framework, alright? So what is TAE? TAE stands for Trend, right? A is Area of value, and E stands for Entry trigger. 16:00 The engulfing pattern, right? This is the so called the theory behind it, right? So you can see that this green candle over here is what we call the bullish engulfing pattern. Why is that? Because if you look at it, right? The body of the green candle which is the... From here in the open and the close, it has engulfed the body of the previous candle. 18:00 Hammer and shooting star. Alright, so let's have a look at the hammer. So the hammer is something that you might be familiar with because you saw earlier, right? The earlier examples. So the hammer is a bullish reversal, because it's actually showing you price rejection in the market. In fact, it's rejection of lower prices. 19:20 Dragonfly and a Gravestone Doji, right? Sounds a handful but really the method is very similar to the hammer and shooting star. The only difference, right? Is that now this Doji. Doji simply means, right? A indecision in the markets. But for Dragonfly and Gravestone Doji, it's a sign of price rejection. 20:45 Morning and evening star. Red star, let's look at the star. So this is a morning star, so you can see that this is somewhat similar to the engulfing pattern, but with a slight variation to it. First candle, sellers are in control. Open over here and closing near the lows. 23:00 Finally Tweezer Top and Bottom, right? So a Tweezer Top, right? Is this one over here, okay? So this actually a Tweezer Bottom. 24:26 How does this fit into the TAE framework, right? Remember the TAE, right? Trend, Area of value, and the Entry trigger. So now we have really settle the entry trigger portion because the reversal patterns that you have seen earlier, those are entry triggers that you can use to enter the trade. But before you, you know, you trade it right? Remember we said, right? Don't trade it in isolation. This means that we have to use other factors or other market conditions, right? This book over here will talk about how you can go about writing trends in the market. For price action trading, right? The ultimate guide to price action trading, this one will share with you on how you can better read the markets and better time your entries and exits. Pretty much similar to what you have learned today, but in a more in-depth manner. So go to my website and download these two trading guides. South China Sea War : Why USS Enterprise Is the Best U S Navy Warship Ever

10:31
South China Sea War : Why USS Enterprise Is the Best U.S. Navy Warship Ever Sortly before USS Enterprise went to the breakers, a new ship bearing the name was laid down; CVN-65, the world’s first nuclear aircraft carrier. The latter USS Enterprise served for fifty years, before decommissioning in 2012. Another USS Enterprise, CVN-80, is scheduled for completion by 2025. In May 1938, the U.S. Navy commissioned the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, the seventh ship to bear the name in American service. The second of three sisters, Enterprise made a central—perhaps the central—contribution to the war effort in 1942. The U.S. Navy began 1942 with six fleet carriers (excluding the small Ranger, which served in the Atlantic). Over the course of the year, Japanese aircraft and submarines would sink four of those carriers and put a fifth (USS Saratoga) out of action for long periods of time. Enterprise fought with distinction in most of the major battles of 1942, and survived to contribute for the rest of the war. (This first appeared several years ago.) Source; https://goo.gl/LES3fk

Somali Maritime Enterprise: Ancient Seafarers of the Erythraean Sea

03:58
In ancient times the Kingdom of Punt, which is believed by several Egyptologists to have been situated in the area of modern-day Somalia, had a steady trade link with the Ancient Egyptians and exported the precious natural resources such as myrrh, frankincense and gum. This trade network continued all the way into the classical era. The city states of Mossylon, Opone, Malao, Mundus and Tabae in Somalia engaged in a lucrative trade network connecting Somali merchants with Phoenicia, Ptolemic Egypt, Greece, Parthian Persia, Saba, Nabataea and the Roman Empire. Somali sailors used the ancient Somali maritime vessel known as the beden to transport their cargo. After the Roman conquest of the Nabataean Empire and the Roman naval presence at Aden to curb piracy, Arab and Somali merchants barred Indian merchants from trading in the free port cities of the Arabian peninsula[2] because of the nearby Roman presence. However, they continued to trade in the port cities of the Somali peninsula, which was free from any Roman threat or spies. The reason for barring Indian ships from entering the wealthy Arabian port cities was to protect and hide the exploitative trade practices of the Somali and Arab merchants in the extremely lucrative ancient Red Sea-Mediterranean Sea commerce. The Indian merchants for centuries brought large quantities of cinnamon from Ceylon and the Far East to Somalia and Arabia. This is said to have been the best kept secret of the Arab and Somali merchants in their trade with the Roman and Greek world. The Romans and Greeks believed the source of cinnamon to have been the Somali peninsula but in reality, the highly valued product was brought to Somalia by way of Indian ships. Through Somali and Arab traders, Indian/Chinese cinnamon was also exported for far higher prices to North Africa, the Near East and Europe, which made the cinnamon trade a very profitable revenue maker, especially for the Somali merchants through whose hands the large quantities were shipped across the ancient sea and land routes. Somali Sailors were aware of the region's monsoons and used them to link themselves with the Port cities of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Another navigational technique was denning the islands of the Indian Ocean to navigate through the ancient trade routes.[3] During the Age of the Ajuuraans, the sultanates and republics of Merca, Mogadishu, Barawa, Hobyo and their respective ports flourished and had a lucrative foreign commerce with ships sailing to Arabia, India, Venetia,[4] Persia, Egypt, Portugal and as far away as China. In the 1500s, Duarte Barbosa noted that many ships from the Kingdom of Cambaya in India sailed to Mogadishu with cloths and spices, for which they in return received gold, wax and ivory. Mogadishu, the center of a thriving weaving industry known as toob benadir (specialized for the markets in Egypt and Syria[5]), together with Merca and Barawa also served as transit stops for Swahili merchants from Mombasa and Malindi and for the gold trade from Kilwa.[6] Trade with the Hormuz went both ways, and Jewish merchants brought their Indian textile and fruit to the Somali coast in exchange for grain and wood.[7] Trading relations were established with Malacca in the 15th century,[8] with cloth, ambergris and porcelain being the main commodities of the trade.[9] Giraffes, zebras and incense were exported to the Ming Empire of China, which established Somali merchants as leaders in the commerce between the Asia and Africa[10] and influenced the Chinese language with the Somali language in the process. Hindu merchants from Surat and Southeast African merchants from Pate, seeking to bypass both the Portuguese blockade and Omani meddling, used the Somali ports of Merca and Barawa (which were out of the two powers' jurisdiction) to conduct their trade in safety and without interference.[11] During the same period, Somali merchants sailed to Cairo, Damascus, Aden, Hyderabad and the islands of the Indian Ocean, establishing Somali communities there, which produced significant individuals such as the important scholar Uthman bin Ali Zayla'i in Egypt, Abd al-Aziz of Mogadishu in the Maldives, and the explorer Sa'id of Mogadishu, the latter of whom traveled across the Muslim world and visited China and India in the 14th century. In the early modern period, successor states of the Adal and Ajuuraan empires began to flourish in Somalia who continued the seaborne trade established by previous Somali empires. The rise of the 19th century Gobroon Dynasty in particular saw a rebirth in Somali maritime enterprise. During this period, the Somali agricultural output to Arabian markets was so great that the coast of Somalia came to be known as the grain coast of Yemen and Oman.[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somali_maritime_history

WARNING (Monday, June 24, 2019) - U.S. Navy News Update - US Military News Today

14:17
US Military News Update (http://bit.ly/USMilitaryNewsUpdate) U.S. Navy Makes Next Two Ford-Class Aircraft Carriers 'More Lethal' The Navy is making lethality enhancing “modifications” to its next two new Ford-class aircraft carriers, to include weapons-oriented ship-adjustments intended to further increase overall aircraft carrier combat effectiveness. The initiatives, according to Navy statements, involve specific aircraft carrier modifications intended to, among other things, improve the maritime warfighting potential of how a carrier integrates with the soon-to-arrive F-35C and MQ-25 Stingray drone aerial refueler. These now-underway modifications, which Navy developers specify do not include changes to the F-35C or Stingray themselves, are in part intended to step up aircraft carrier attack abilities on the open sea, made manifest by the Navy’s recent cost-saving two-carrier buy. All of this is enabled by a two-carrier Navy buy of its next two Ford-class carriers. Instead of stove-piping or separating purchases for its next two carriers, the Navy has awarded a contract to Huntington Ingalls Industries to build both the future USS Enterprise (CVN 80) and the as-of-yet unnamed fourth Ford-class carrier - CVN 81. Alongside the intended cost-saving of more than $ 4 billion associated with the block buy, the Navy is also streamlining weapons and war-technology development regarding how a carrier hosts its F-35C, Mk 38 gun system and MQ-25 Stingray drones, a Navy statement writes. “These modifications increase the lethality of the Ford-class, and represent an additional $100 million in savings….since these modifications were not included in the original single CVN Navy estimate,” a Navy statement writes. These modifications to the carriers themselves, described as “lethality” enhancing measures, appear to be a part of the Navy’s broader strategy to massively increase offensive and defensive war systems for its Ford-class carriers. So far, some of these measures include the planned addition of now-in-development torpedo defense systems, interceptor missiles and the introduction of greatly impactful platforms such as the F-35C and MQ-25 Stingray. Part of these modifications include the introduction of digital shipbuilding techniques as well. "Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) is key to achieving the production efficiencies of the two-CVN buy. The Navy and the shipbuilder are investing in iDS, which will reduce the amount of production effort required to build Ford-class carriers, William Couch, Naval Sea Systems Command spokesman, told Warrior Maven. Streamlining the integration of these platforms, as stated by the Navy, could bring a range of substantial enhancements - and align with the Navy strategy to better prepare its carriers for war. The F-35C, naturally, will bring a new array of attack options for the Carrier Air Wing, not to mention an unprecedented measure of aerial Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance (ISR). Drawing upon new sensor and targeting technology, the aerial attack range will be significantly changed, and stealth technology will enable air attack to operate in higher threat environments, such as areas containing advanced air-defenses. The arrival of the F-35C is, by all estimations, expected to change the paradigm for carrier-air attack. These enhancements are intended to work alongside and benefit from the emergence of a first-of-its kind drone refueler which brings the promise of potentially doubling the attack radius for carrier-launched fighters. An ability to refuel while in flight massively extends a carriers attempt to further project power, while remaining at safer stand-off distances. If the combat radius of an F-18 or F-35, on one fuel tank, reaches 300 to 400 miles or so, the aircraft will have to turn around at a certain distance from its carrier. However, if an attack platform can double that range, it can naturally travel much farther, enabling much more “dwell time” when it comes to attacks and provide the option to strike targets farther inland or from greater distances. With a clear intent to enhance the Navy’s carrier-based forward attack presence worldwide, shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls released a statement that the two-carrier buy is instrumental toward actualizing the Navy’s planned fleet expansion. Streamlined acquisition, HII says, can bring the Navy closer to a path toward a 12-carrier fleet. A HII statement at the time of the award called the 2-carrier buy "a triumphant step toward returning to a 12-ship aircraft carrier fleet and building the 355-ship Navy our nation needs,” Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding said in a company statement. “Most importantly for us, it provides stability into the year 2032 for our workforce and for our supplier businesses across the United States.” HII adds that the two ships will are scheduled to be delivered in 2028 and 2032, respectively. ... In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Dutch managed to dominate world trade, and they did all through the pioneering use of corporations and finance. Well, they did also use some traditional methods like violently enforced monopolies, unfair trade agreements, and plain old warfare. You'll learn how the Dutch invented stuff like joint stock corporations, maritime insurance, and futures trading. Basically, how the Dutch East India Company crashed the US economy in 2008. Shipwrecks Britain's Sunken History Documentary

58:55
Shipwrecks are the nightmare we have forgotten - the price Britain paid for ruling the waves from an island surrounded by treacherous rocks. The result is a coastline that is home to the world's highest concentration of sunken ships. But shipwrecks also changed the course of British history, helped shape our national character and drove innovations in seafaring technology, as well as gripping our imagination. Mutiny, murder and mayhem on the high seas as Sam Willis takes the story of shipwrecks into the Georgian age when Britain first began to rule the waves. But with maritime trade driving the whole enterprise, disasters at sea imperilled all this. As key colonies were established and new territories conquered, the great sailing ships became symbols of the power of the Georgian state - and the shipwreck was to be its Achilles' heel. By literally turning this world upside down, mutinous sailors, rebellious slaves and murderous wreckers threatened to undermine Britain's ambitions and jeopardise its imperial venture.

The brutal 'industrial enterprise' of black-market tiger trafficking

05:53
It’s estimated that there are fewer than 4,000 tigers remaining in the wild today, compared to roughly 100,000 in the early 1900s. More tigers now live in captivity than in the wild, and many of those live in so-called “tiger farms,” where they are bred, raised and slaughtered for their body parts. William Brangham talks to The Washington Post’s Terrence McCoy, who visited such farms in Laos. The Manila Galleon

01:51
The Manila Galleon trade route connected Asia, America, and Europe for the first time in a single commercial route with Spanish ships. This was made possible thanks to the discovery of a sea current that enabled ships to quickly cross the pacific ocean from west to east. Today, few people know that China and Spain contributed to the beginning of globalization. 500 years later, they continue this journey together.

Question Time: Enterprise, Trade and Investment Tuesday 02 June 2015

44:13
Jonathan Bell participated in his first Question Time as Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Investment. Mr Bell was asked about the latest employment figures and labour force survey estimates. The Minister is “pleased that the latest figures demonstrate that the economic recovery is progressing.” The number of people claiming unemployment benefits has fallen for the 28th consecutive month and unemployment is down to 6.2%. This positivity is also reflected in the growth of jobs with 30,000 net new jobs added to the local economy since 2012. The Minister did however warn against complacency saying “despite those positive figures, all of us will recognise that we still have a number of labour market challenges to address.” Michael McGimpsey tempered the optimism further by pointing out that the figure for economically inactive in Northern Ireland is the highest in the UK. Mr Bell acknowledged the problem and outlined the steps that his Department is taking, in conjunction with DSD, DHSSPS and DEL, to address the current issues. During the topical question period the Minister discussed the prospect of additional flight routes operating from Belfast International airport. Last month it was announced that Belfast was successful in its bid to host Routes Europe 2017. Routes Europe is a major conference that brings together the main decision makers from airlines, airports and tourism operators, giving them the opportunity to meet and build the relationships that go on to shape the world’s future air routes network. The Minister enthused, “To have that in Belfast is a huge vote of confidence for Belfast. The number of people involved from all around the world will provide a significant boost for our economy. We will work with BIA to develop new routes where feasible.” During Question Time the Minister also answered questions on programme for government targets, the prospects of a new hotel in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland’s composite economic index and PricewaterhouseCooper’s ‘UK Economic Outlook’.
China’s most advanced rescue ship put into use in South China Sea

02:25
China's first vessel capable of conducting rescue in deep, open water was delivered and put into service on Wednesday in the South China Sea. The ship, Nanhaijiu 102, is the most advanced rescue vessel in the area and will play a role in emergencies, said the Ministry of Transport. An all-weather, high-powered rescue ship designed and built by China, is 127 meters long and 16 meters wide, with displacement of 7,300 tons and a range of 16,000 nautical miles. "The typhoon season is coming. The South China Sea frequently has typhoons. But our ship has a large hull with a powerful impetus, and we have advanced equipment. So we have the capability to conduct rescue operations under hurricane and high sea conditions," said Lin Zhou, captain of the Nanhaijiu 102. Carrying a towing system and autonomous underwater vehicle that can dive as deep as 6,000 meters, the ship is the country's first rescue ship that can conduct air, sea and underwater searches at the same time. The ministry said Nanhaijiu 102 is designed for bad sea conditions including 12th grade waves and is suitable for the refueling and landing of helicopters. "Our whole deep-sea towing system is to have the exact underwater location and image of the towed bodies like sunken ships wreckage in seabed or the target objects like the crashed aircraft wreckage through imaging scanning and mapping by principles of acoustics," said Liu Xiaoyu, assistant engineer of planning, construction and technology department of the South China Sea Rescue Bureau. China has 74 special rescue ships, among which 31 are in southern sea areas. In addition, the country has 20 rescue helicopters, according to the ministry. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170309/8044917.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus

U.S. Battleship Confronts China for 'EXCESSIVE maritime claims' in South China Sea

10:01
U.S. Battleship Confronts China for 'EXCESSIVE maritime claims' in South China Sea ... A US warship sailed through the South China Sea earlier today to challenge China’s “excessive maritime challenge”, officials have confirmed. Guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell patrolled near the Parcel Islands challenging China’s claim to the region. The Parcel Islands have been controlled by China since its forces seized them from Vietnam in 1974. Both Vietnam and Taiwan maintain rival claims to the islands. The USS McCampbell sailed within 12 miles of the islands of Tree, Lincoln and Woods in a so called ‘freedom of navigation operation’. US Pacific Fleet spokeswoman Rachel McMarr said the visit was intended to “preserve access to the waterways as governed by international law”. China has significantly upgraded its military presence in the Parcel Islands over the past few years. Recent satellite images showed jet fighters had been stationed on at least one of the islands. China controversially claims sovereignty over the entire South China Sea. However this clashes with rival claims from Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei and the Philippines. The US, a treaty ally of the Philippines, disputes the Chinese claim. Last September another American warship, the USS Decatur, conducted a patrol close to the Spratlys islands in the same region. During a 10 hour patrol the ship travelled within 12 miles of two Chinese controlled reefs.
