Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, and the Cult of Silicon Valley

31:06
Elizabeth Holmes became a Silicon Valley celebrity after she dropped out of Stanford at 19 to start a company called Theranos. We sat down with John Carreyrou, the Wall Street Journal reporter who unmasked Holmes. Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Established in 2003, Theranos promised to save people from pain and disease through early detection and lead the way into an era of cheaper, more consumer-driven health care. Holmes' big idea was to replace traditional venous blood draws in a doctor's office, hospital, or lab with simple finger pricks. One day, she said, patients would be able to do the tests at home and upload the results for their doctors. Holmes stacked her board of directors with heavyweights such as former and future cabinet members George Schultz, Henry Kissinger, and Gen. James Mattis. She held fundraisers for Hillary Clinton and cadged hundreds of millions of dollars from investors such as the Walmart heirs, Rupert Murdoch, and Betsy DeVos. For a time, her company was worth more than Spotify or Uber. Today, Theranos is on the verge of liquidation and its backers have seen their investments wiped out. Holmes may face charges. The man who looked closer at Theranos is John Carreyrou, a veteran investigative journalist at The Wall Street Journal. His dogged reporting revealed the tactics of flattery and intimidation that fooled Holmes' investors and the press, allowing her to keep up the deception for as long as she did. When Carreyrou's stories on Theranos started appearing in 2015, Holmes went on the offensive, depicting herself as a Silicon Valley disrupter who had become the target of a smear campaign orchestrated by established interests. Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Carreyrou to talk about his new book on Theranos, Bad Blood: Secrecy and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, which has made the New York Times bestseller list and will soon be made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence as Elizabeth Holmes. Bad Blood raises tough questions about regulators' failure to stop Theranos, the infatuation of the public and the press with the mystique of Silicon Valley, and the shadowlands where innovation, capitalism, and deception meet. How Silicon Valley Helps the Government Track All of Us.

Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ---------------- Silicon Valley firms are building surveillance and profiling tools to help government agents make sense of the massive amount of information available on social media and in publicly accessible data sets. Are they using cutting-edge technologies to keep Americans safe, or laying the groundwork for a police state? The Palo-Alto based Palantir is one of the biggest so-called threat intelligence firms, and it's primary backer is Peter Thiel, the PayPal founder, Facebook board member, and Trump supporter. Also an outspoken libertarian, Thiel told Fortune magazine he hopes Palantir's technology will help protect the civil liberties of Americans because, given the massive amounts of Americans' data the government takes in, "If we could help [agents] make sense of data, they could end indiscriminate surveillance." He believes Palantir's technology will prove crucial in stopping future terrorist attacks. Some insiders credit Palantir for enabling the government to find Osama bin Laden's hideout in 2011. Edward Hasbrouck of the nonprofit Identity Project says that the technology enables the government to violate civil liberties without necessary checks on its power. He compares it to the Berlin Wall. "By building checkpoints—by building the control mechanisms," Hasbrouck says, "we're already putting into place the infrastructure for those who will abuse them in the future." But Paul Scharre, a policy analyst who studies artificial intelligence and defense at the Center for a New American Security, says the public shouldn't fear new technology simply because it's unfamiliar. "There's no technology that's just inherently good or inherently bad," says Scharre. "It's about how we're using it, and to what ends." Watch the video above to learn more about artificial intelligence, its application in government, and what precautions we might take to preserve our civil liberties going forward. Silicon Valley: Season 4 Episode 3 - Intellectual Property / Guest Lecturer

01:59
No character in Silicon Valley better embodies our tendency to mistake luck for skill than Nelson Bighetti, Jr., the mediocre coder and Chauncey Gardiner type who continues to breeze through the Valley without a trace of real accomplishment, or even a general awareness of his surroundings. After leading Hooli’s experimental labs and pioneering some sort of potato cannon (a Season 2 sendup of Google’s loony “moonshot” division), then blowing through $20 million and producing nothing as a hobbyist VC, he now passes on wisdom to the next generation as a guest lecturer in Stanford’s computer science department. The story of how he got to the head of the class is probably the funniest part of Big Head’s arc so far. Under pressure from his father to “get a job or go back to school or something,” he applies to Stanford and is rejected… until the admissions officer realizes that he is the Nelson Bighetti, a famous person who was present near memorable things that have happened in the Valley. “You were on the cover of Wired magazine!” “Yeah,” he says, "and inside, too!” He’s offered what he thinks is a spot in the program as a student - “I asked if there’d be homework and they’re, like, 'if you want’…” —and doesn’t realize he’s the teacher until the first day of class. (HBO’s marketing department absolutely must turn this into a Massive Open Online Course, or, MOOC, by the way.) Keywords: -=-=-=-=-=- Silicon Valley Season 4 Episode 3 Intellectual Property Standford Nelson Bighetti moonshot vc Wired lecturer Thank you HBO for this awesome tv series! How Defying Silicon Valley Culture Landed 400K Clients, with Melody McCloskey of StyleSeat

Foundr Magazine Podcast EP185: How Defying Silicon Valley Culture Landed 400K Clients, with Melody McCloskey of StyleSeat Melody McCloskey is the founder of StyleSeat, a San Francisco-based SaaS company that has raised $40 million in funding, powers billions in transactions and is recognized in 82% of American cities. StyleSeat provides tools for beauty professionals, which lets them run their entire business with just one piece of software. If StyleSeat sounds like your typical booming, industry-disrupting tech startup, don’t be fooled. McCloskey is dedicated to running her company in very atypical ways, and in today’s interview, she shares how bucking Silicon Valley norms can help you achieve tremendous success—on your own terms. For example, her startup is led overwhelmingly by women, a rarity in an industry with persistent gender gaps. The company has also chosen to stop raising money, and without a marketing or sales team, it barely invests in marketing. McCloskey loves what she does and her business decisions are not solely driven by a pursuit of revenue and growth like many of her peers. Her goal is to empower badass female business owners with amazing products so they can do what they love as well. When they win, she wins. Check out the interview to learn McCloskey’s unique approaches to funding, growth, and staffing, along with other priceless lessons. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ✅ Subscribe to our FREE Podcast on iTunes for more episodes: https://foundr.com/cast ✅ Visit http://foundr.com/ for more epic content on showing you what it takes to build and grow a successful business ✅ Subscribe to the Foundr channel here: https://www.youtube.com/foundr?sub_confirmation=1 ✅ Subscribe to Foundr's Weekly Newsletter for exclusive content here: http://foundr.com/newsletter ✅ Get FREE Printed Branson edition: http://www.foundr.com/freemagazine ________________________________________________________________________________________ Foundr is the go-to digital resource for the growing ranks of craft, self-made entrepreneurs – at every level of experience. Why Facebook ‘Welcomes’ Regulation: Mark Zuckerberg vs. Silicon Valley’s Richard Hendricks

03:19
Mark Zuckerberg is the multi-billionaire founder and CEO of Facebook. This week he testified before Congress, assuring lawmakers that his company will play nice with government regulators. _____ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. _____ Richard Hendricks is from HBO's sitcom Silicon Valley. He's the bumbling CEO of the unfortunately named Pied Piper. His memorable moments include evacuating his bowels, vomiting, and then lunging into a glass wall in front of his workers. One is poised when being grilled by Congress and the other can't even deliver a pep talk to his staff without hurling under his desk. But the better hope for the future of the internet is Richard Hendricks and not Mark Zuckerberg. Here's why. In his testimony, Zuckerberg welcomed regulation, and even agreed to help craft it. He's in the same position as late-19th-century railroad tycoons. Contrary to conventional wisdom, these robber barons embraced regulation as a way to raise the barriers to entry for competitors who were eating into their profits and market share. Still sporting a hoodie, Richard Hendricks is at an earlier stage of his career. He's trying to build a new internet in an effort to outmaneuver Hooli, a fictional amalgamation of Google and Facebook. Richard represents the next wave of innovation— the competitor who, if government stays out of it, will eventually erode Facebook's market share by offering a better product. Even Richard's approach to disrupting Facebook is more than just TV fantasy. There's a real movement in the tech world to build a new decentralized web that would give users actual control over their own data and create open platforms that aren't controlled by any single all-powerful CEO. One reason to bet on real-life projects such as Blockstack and Ethereum to decentralize the internet is that talented engineers are beating down their doors, because working at Google and Facebook is lucrative but soul killing. As Facebook and Congress start to write new rules for cyberspace, all of us who believe in free expression and permissionless innovation have a real stake in making sure that the future of the internet remains as wide open as possible. Produced by Todd Krainin. Written by Jim Epstein and Nick Gillespie, who also narrates.

Russian tech investors set up shop in Silicon Valley

05:00
Russian tech investors set up shop in Silicon Valley. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Masha Drokova, a 28-year-old Russian political activist turned venture capitalist, on Tuesday joined a small family of Russian nationals who have set up shop as Silicon Valley venture investors. Drokova’s new firm, Day One Ventures, will make investments of $100,000 to $1 million from a fund that initially totals nearly $50 million, a person familiar with the matter said. Drokova hopes her experience as an angel investor and a prior career in public relations will give her edge. “Masha knows a lot of people,” said Serguei Beloussov, a senior investing partner at venture firm Runa Capital and who worked with Drokova until 2014. “She is good in that she gets access to very good startups.” Drokova’s new fund comes as relations between the United States and Russia remain fraught and foreign investments of all types into U.S. technology companies receive more scrutiny.

Silicon Valley Has Lost Its Soul

01:04:34
Silicon Valley once promised to solve many of the world’s problems with a technological revolution. But now, the tech hub is the center of much scrutiny, and for many, that scrutiny is warranted. From privacy violations to flawed business models to a lack of diversity and representation, Silicon Valley has seemingly betrayed its idealism. And though technological progress has notably enriched a few, Silicon Valley has failed to deliver its promise to all. Has the prioritization of profits and conformity of thought corrupted its original “do good” agenda? Proponents argue no: Silicon Valley’s critics are simply overreacting. After all, it is still the center of innovation, and the tech giants have revolutionized the way we think, shop, communicate, and experience our lives for the better. Do big tech’s detractors simply expect too much from lucrative corporations? Or has Silicon Valley lost its soul? Stossel: Does Silicon Valley manipulate users?

05:18
The new film "The Creepy Line" argues that tech giants sometimes silence conservatives and try to steer America left. --------- Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. --------- Leaked emails show some Google engineers blaming their company for Trump's 2016 win, suggesting that the site should censor outlets like The Daily Caller and Breitbart. Google says the company never did that, but for many people, it raises the question: could Google executives flip an election? "Google's senior management was heavily in favor of Hillary Clinton," The Creepy Line writer Peter Schweizer tells John Stossel. "Their ability to manipulate the algorithm is something that they've demonstrated the ability to do in the past...and the evidence from academics who monitored 2016 was clearly that they did." Schweizer's film features psychologist Robert Epstein, whose research claimed that people rated Google's top search results in 2016 as more positive to Hilary Clinton than to Donald Trump. Stossel says that it doesn't prove that Google's results were biased. It may just be that major media outlets ran more positive headlines about Clinton, and since Google's results rely on the major media, that would bring more positive Clinton headlines, even without any bias on Google's part. Even if Google's search algorithm is fair, major social media outlets do manipulate us by determining what we can not see. The film plays a clip of psychologist Jordan Peterson, who points out: "They're not using unbiased algorithms to do things like search for unacceptable content on twitter and on YouTube and on Facebook–those aren't unbiased at all. They're built specifically to filter out whatever's bad." Stossel notes that Google and Facebook employ human content monitors, some of whom despise conservatives, to determine what is "bad." Peterson himself has reason to worry. After he criticized a Canadian law that would mandate use of people's preferred pronouns (like "ze" or "xir"), Google briefly shut down Peterson's YouTube channel. They even blocked him from his own Gmail account. "That's a real problem," says Peterson. "You come to rely on these things and when the plug is pulled suddenly then that puts a big hole in your life." Stossel wonders: what can consumers do about possible social media manipulation or censorship? One speaker in Schweizer's film says, "delete your accounts!" Stossel tells Schweizer: "I don't want to delete my accounts–and you can't, without cutting yourself off from much of the best of the world." Schweizer admits that it's a challenge, but says he's switched to Google's competitors. For simple searches, Schweizer uses DuckDuckGo.com instead of Google. For email, Schweizer uses the encrypted service ProtonMail.com, based in Switzerland, rather than Gmail. The web browser Brave provides an alternative to Google's Chrome. Brave was founded by Brendan Eich, who created the browser Firefox but was then forced to leave his own company because he once donated to a ballot proposition against gay marriage. But most people won't switch. Stossel hasn't switched. He wonders if a few individuals switching will change much. "That's all we have? A pathetic act that won't make any difference?" he asks. Schweizer replies: "If people make clear to Google that they don't like their manipulation, and they don't like their invasion of privacy ... they will be forced to make changes. That's part of the reason we love and support the market the way we do." The views expressed in this video are solely those of John Stossel; his independent production company, Stossel Productions; and the people he interviews. The claims and opinions set forth in the video and accompanying text are not necessarily those of Reason.
