This is a great video for talking about selling Brands. Many companies over think and oversell in Marketing. He talks about some of the really great Brands. If you think about them, they sell feelings, images of experience and perception. In Ads, Coke doesnt list its ingredients and tell you why its better than Pepsi. It sells an experience of smiling happy people. Most people dont buy a car for the features and benefits, they buy if it will make them look cool and accepted. Steve talks about how to SIMPLIFY your Brand message. We could all learn from this. He talks about the "soul" of a company. Keep in mind the success of Apple is that the company INTERNALLY lives and breathes by the same principals they market. They are just selling BS. People dont buy products and services...they buy the feelings and experiences they may get from them. At 1:45 he talks about Nike. When it comes to dealing with emotions, women are definitely more expressive and in touch with their feelings. Most women don’t see anything wrong with letting the tears flow down no matter where they are. But guys are a little more guarded when it comes to expressing themselves. They tend to keep their emotions bottled up until they’re all alone and can let it all out in private. Women have been found to experience pain more intensely than men. Estrogen makes a women’s pain receptors more sensitive, especially during her menstrual cycle. Women also recover from pain faster, they will seek out a doctor more quickly, and they don’t allow pain to control their lives. Testosterone, the male hormone, elevates men’s tolerance for pain and allows them to withstand it for much longer. After a bad breakup, women take time to process their emotions in order to heal from their relationship coming to an end. This helps them move on and move forward with mending their broken heart. But men never really take the time to recover from a breakup. Instead of dealing with the sadness and the sense of loss, they try to move on as quickly as possible, but they tend to carry on the baggage for years to come. Men are much more visual than women, so they prefer to watch naughty movies to get themselves in the mood. Catching a glimpse of a woman’s body parts can send a man’s mind into a frenzy. But women are a bit more complex when it comes to sexual desire. Visual stimulation doesn’t always lead to arousal. A woman is more turned on by a series of things, including compatibility with her partner, emotions, and a sensual ambiance. The Dairy industry try to convince you for 20 years that milk is good for you, it’s a lie but they tried anyway and the sales were falling and they tried “GOT MILK” and the sales went up. Got milk wasn’t even talking about the product, in fact it focuses on the absence of the product, but the best example of all and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen is NIKE, remember NIKE sells a commodity they sell shoe and yet when you think of NIKE you feel something different than a shoe company, in their ads as you know they don’t ever talk about the product, they don’t ever tell you about their AIR SOLES and why they are better than REEBOKK’s AIR SOLES what does NIKE do in their advertising? They honor great athletes, and they honor great athletics, that is who they are and that is what they are about, Apple spends a fortune on advertising, you’d never know it, so when I got here Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that you know, four years from now we would pick one and we blew that up and we hired CHIAT/DAY the ad agency I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award-winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 by advertising professional) And we started working about 8 weeks ago and the question we asked was “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it we stand for……..where do we fit in this world?” What we are about isn’t making boxes for people to get their job done, although we do that well, we do that almost better than anybody in some cases, but Apple is about something more than that, Apple at the core, its core value is that we believe people with passion can change the world for better, that is what we believe and we have had the opportunity to work with people like that……………and we believe that in this world people can change it for the better, and THAT THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER ARE THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY DO. And so what we are going to do our first brand marketing campaign in several years is to get back to that CORE VALUE. A lot of things have changed, the market is in total a different place than where it was a decade ago and Apple is totally different and Apple’s place in it is totally different and believe me, the product and the distribution strategy and the manufacturing are totally different and we understand that but VALUES and CORE VALUES those things shouldn’t CHANGE The things Apple believed in at its core are the same things Apple really stands for today and so we wanted to find a way to communicate this and what we have is something that I am very moved by, it honors those people who have changed the world, some of them are living, some of them are not, the ones that aren’t as you will see, you will know, if they ever used a computer it would have been a MAC and the Theme of the Campaign is “Think Different” it is honoring the people who think different and move this world forward and it is what we are about it touches the soul of this company. Apple's use of the slogan was discontinued with the start of the Apple Switch ad campaign in 2002. The slogan appeared to have been a play on the venerable IBM "Think" motto coined by Thomas J. Watson, with IBM having been a direct competitor of Apple in the PC market. More explicitly, the Apple slogan served to challenge consumers who were wanting to buy IBM-derived Windows-based PCs to consider Apple as a smart alternative.

That’s my goal today. Let me introduce you to the concept of success. Ben Franklin was a pretty smart guy and I want to start with a quote by him. If you do tomorrow what you did today, you will get tomorrow what you got today. You wanna know what that means? The average American makes between 3 to 5 percent more each year, that’s the deal. And in today’s economy I’m not sure we’re going to make the 3 to 4 to 5 percent next year as employees. So it takes you 20 years to double your income in America as an average person. That’s the mediocrity that we’re stuck in in life. And then you meet people who have the uncanny ability to double their income in a year, to get promoted 5 times in a year. The ones that beat the system, the ones that conquer it. You’ve all seen them haven’t you? The difference between them and the ones that don’t do that is that they wake up in the morning and they think differently. They understand that if I do tomorrow what I do today, I’m gonna get tomorrow what I got today. You want a bigger car? How about a nice house in Tahini? Sure would you love a nice house in the hills? We all want better things don’t we? We all want more friends more stuff more money more security more travel more enjoyment. If you do the same thing tomorrow that you did today you’re stuck. And it doesn’t change. And it grows a little at a time. And you get a taste of success. But it’s never fast enough. It never excites you. And when it does it’s a good month, or a good 2 months, or a good 3 months but it doesn’t provide a trajectory that creates success. So the first thing I want you to think about today is I want you to wake up tomorrow and do something different. And understand if you do the same damn thing you’re stuck. Just because you did it a certain way yesterday is no reason to do it that way today. Think different is an interpretation of the knowledge that people today respond to brands in a similar fashion to religion. I wanted to highlight flaws that lie within such idealistic opinions, creating a modern stain glass inspired illustration of Steve Jobs, the Messiah of the 'Apple religion'. Manipulating artificial light, each of the 1600 triangles represents a employe who leaves just one of Apples factories every 48hours, due to poor working conditions. Each of the missing triangles is a tribute to the ten employees who took their own life following such conditions. I want to inspire people to look beyond the obvious and think different to the projection of mainstream media.

It was used in a famous television commercial and several print advertisements. The slogan was used at the end of several product commercials, until the advent of Apple's Switch ad campaign. Apple currently does not use the slogan, and their commercials usually end with a silhouetted Apple logo and sometimes a pertinent website address.

I’ll admit, at times my views can be quite rigid; however, hearing this person’s story has shown me I maybe need a different approach at times. With all that being said, the pathway and moral-of-the-story was once again the same (and yet another data point): no excuses! Our guest, Ethan (“qualia” in the chat room), had an upbringing that caused him first need to do some heavy lifting in order to change his mindset, but after doing so, he’s built himself a nice life and is now expanding into trading. The trading journey is still young, but given his mindset with his work ethic sprinkled in, there’s no doubt he’s going to be doing great things. I truly enjoyed this discussion and I know you will too. (in fact, I enjoyed it so much I also had a longer discussion with him on my The Money with Clay Podcast – which can be found on iTunes)
