Travel Guide to Kyrgyzstan

05:09
Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan. Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited. The country is primarily a mountainous land rising in altitude from 400 metres in the Ferghana Valley to over 7,400 metre on the summit of Peak Pobeda. More than half of the country is over 3,000 metres high, while a third is permanently covered in snow. But despite the immense natural beauty of this landlocked Central Asian, Silk Road republic, it is the people themselves that bring Kyrgyzstan to life, and on many of our tours to the country you will stay with local families with whom we have developed special friendships. So to the country and the main sites you’ll see. Heading east out of the leafy, tree-lined streets of the capital Bishkek – a place renowned for its markets, monuments and excellent museum – you’ll first pass the imposing 11th century Borana Tower, before skirting the edge of Lake Izzy Kul. Here, in the far northeast of the country, you can spend a couple of days on the lake, visit the interesting town of Karakol or head to Karkara Mountain Camp for a bit of helicopter assisted glacier trekking, available every year on our Celestial Mountain Action Adventure. From here you’ll probably move on around the southern shores of the lake, visiting one of the famous eagle hunters, and possibly trek over the one of the many magnificent passes, before hitting the main road south towards China, and one of the last remaining ancient Silk Road caravanserais at Tash Rabat. Here you can go for walks, or ride one of the local’s horses, all the while staying in one of the traditional yurts while Nazira and her family look after you. People often ask me, where is my favourite place in the world – well, this is right up there; sitting on the hills above the valley is one of the most peaceful settings I know. From here most will either head over the border to China and the famous Silk Road crossroads town of Kashgar or west across the mountains to another jewel in the Kyrgyz crown, Lake Son Kul. A 3,000 metre high glacial lake, some 40 kilometres in length, again it offers a great place to walk or ride among the hills and meet more of the locals. As you head further west so you can cross the sensational Ferghana range and visit the region around the Tajik border – particularly travelling up to Peak Lenin base camp – or head down into the Ferghana Valley and the ancient Silk Road town of Osh. Many of our trips come this way as they head into neighbouring Uzbekistan, but continuing on the circuit back round towards Bishkek and you come to yet another wonderful region of natural beauty, Sary Chelek National Park. At Wild Frontiers we run both small group tours and tailor-made holidays to Kyrgyzstan. While some trips focus solely on this country, others take in Kyrgyzstan on longer journeys through this Silk Road region. It’s also the place that we run one of our best horse riding adventures; loosely following the route I took back in 1999, for those interested in equine holidays, this trip is simply sensational. As you can see, as far as natural mountain beauty is concerned Kyrgyzstan is unrivalled in the region. It is a country with few political issues, a place with good tourist infrastructure and yet relatively few tourist. It’s a place where you can walk, ride, mountain bike, raft or heli-trek – with us, all on a single trip! – and as of 2012 there are no visa requirements for British and many other nationalities. As I say when I rode through the country 15 years ago, I knew I had discovered a gem…and so it is today. Kyrgyzstan really is one of adventure travels best kept secrets.

I aim to create an entertaining piece of content about my travels 2-3 times per week. Unless literally everything goes wrong, but than still, I'll try to make a video about that! I can be super excited about the simple things in life and I think that life is amazing! Before this road trip plan from Asia to Europe, I crossed the Pacific Ocean on sailing boats as crew member and visited The Unites States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, The Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, The Kingdom Of Niue, Rarotonga, Tonga, Fiji, some other small islands and ended up in New Zealand. In New Zealand I cycled 3.000km from top to bottom. After that I flew to Vietnam to start a motorbike trip. Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi by Motorbike, after which into Laos and Cambodia. Than travelled a short time in Thailand. After Thailand I flew to Kyrgyzstan to buy a car and drive back to Europe. I wanted to drive from Thailand back to Europe but the crossing through Myanmar with your own car is too expensive as also the crossing from India to Tajikistan, because currently you can't go through Afghanistan and have to pay for a guide to go through China. This is all amazing, unless you are a budget traveller. Right now I am in Bishek, Kyrgyzstan

An overland expedition to lake Kel Suu in Kyrgyzstan

12:45
Lake Kel Suu stands at an elevation of 3514m. It's one of the highest alpine lakes in the world. Its a very small lake between high cliffsnot too far from the Chinese border. Normally filled with vivid turquoise waters the lake is now dry due to a lack of snow in winter. In August of 2018 we travelled together with a group of 10 travellers to the lake of Kel Suu and to the beautiful Caravanserai of Tash-Rabat. Together with a fun group of 10 adventurers, we went on a road trip across Kyrgyzstan. We got treated to the most beautiful landscapes, we camped in the most stunning valleys, spent a few nights in yurts of nomads, made some beautiful hikes and had so much fun during these 6 days! It didn't even matter that we got surprised by a huge amount of snow during our first day of camping (we brought enough vodka and cognac to stay warm ;) ) We are so grateful our first adventure tours were such a success. Both tours were fully booked, we feel blessed that 25 amazing people wanted to join us on these adventures and that they went home or continued their travels with a big smile and great memories. Seriously, we couldn't have hoped for more! We spent a weekend in Kyrgyzstan ( A family took us hostage)

08:59
The best way to get to know a country is by spending time with the locals. You learn so much about the culture and their daily lives. If you already know us a little, then you know that this is what interests us the most during our travels. Already on our first evening in Kyrgyzstan, we got invited by a family to spend the night in their home. They treated us to some local dishes and rang their neighbors and extended family to come and meet us (the sister-in-law was already dreaming of a marriage between her daughter and our travel companion Alex). Even though our Russian language skills aren't very fluent (yet), we were able to have a good conversation and we could learn more about the daily routine of the family. We didn't only fall for the beautiful landscapes of Kyrgyzstan, its people really stole our hearts! NHK Silk Road IV : Steep Road to the Oasis - Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan

48:59
NHK (日本放送協会 Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai?, official English name: Japan Broadcasting Corporation) is Japan's national public broadcasting organization.[2] NHK, which has always identified itself to its audiences by the English pronunciation of its initials,[3] is a publicly owned corporation funded by viewers' payments of a television license fee. Launched in 1980, NHK's renowned Silk Road series was the first foreign TV program allowed to film Silk Road inside communist China. The series sparked enormous interest. A quarter of a century later, NHK re-visits Silk Road with high-definition cameras. The first half of the journey is to Loolan, Tibet, Taklamakan Desert and Xian. The trip then continues from former Soviet Central Asia to the Middle East and Turkey. With its swirling mix of ethnic identities, this region is now carving out a new period of history led by the resurgence of Islam. NHK provides a new look at this modern-day Silk Road giving you a clear view of the regions' momentous changes. A visit to a new city that has emerged near the border between Kyrgyzstan and China. The city shows rapid growth due to the huge influx of Chinese goods. Heading west, we will see the cotton fields spread out across a huge oasis in Uzbekistan. We also explore the beautiful, white-bricked city of Bukhara, which still maintains an atmosphere of the Middle Ages. In one of the city's narrow streets, Uzbekis, Russians, Jews, and others live together side-by-side in harmony. Visit these people who live to the fullest amidst the uncertainties after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Karakol city tourism brochure, Karakol itinerary or Karakol, Kyrgyzstan city tour. 15 Things to do in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide video transcript: Hey guys this week we are in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, so Karakol (Каракол) is a place that we've actually visited last year but we were only here on a day trip so we didn't get to see a whole lot. Right and this is basically the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan. There is a lot of good hiking, you can take boat trips. So we're just going to show you like what you can do in and around this area. Let's Our first stop was the Dungan Mosque. This mosque is unique because architecturally it looks a lot like a Buddhist temple; this is because it was built by the Dungan community, an ethnically Chinese people group who follow Islam. Another iconic place of worship in Karakol (Каракол) is the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. This is a traditional Russian wooden cathedral complete with onion domes. We also squeezed in a quick visit to Karakol’s History Museum, which has a rather fascinating taxidermy collection. Okay so it is dinner time here in Karakol (قاراقول) and the sun has gone down and today we are going to be doing a traditional meal with a family. So we're going to be preparing Ashlyanfu (Ашлян-фу) which is a cold noodle starch soup and then we're going to go into their home and have a nice family dinner together. And because we love our food, we also took a cooking class where we learned to make a traditional Uyghur dish: laghman (Лагман). As far as day trips go, one nearby attraction from Karakol (Каракол) is Jeti Oguz known for its red hills. It’s about a 30 minute drive and you can easily hire a driver to take you out there. Last but not least, one of the most popular things to do in Karakol (Каракол) is hiking. This is considered the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) with many hikes and horse treks starting right in town. And that’s a little taste of what Karakol and the surrounding area has to offer visitors. We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Karakol (Каракол). Central Asia Travels: Travelling to Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyzstan, also referred to as the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country that is situated in Central Asia. It is landlocked and bordered by four other countries: Kazakhstan to the north, Tajikistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, and China to the east. The capital of Kyrgyzstan is Bishkek, which is located at the northern part of the country. Aside from being the largest and most populated city, you may also notice that many of Bishkek's buildings bear some Soviet influence. The country's official languages are Kyrgyz and Russian. The Kyrgyz ethnic group makes up more than 60% of Kyrgyzstan's population, followed by the Uzbeks, Russians, and Germans. Kyrgyzstan Tourism People who are looking for Central Asia travel places should consider putting Kyrgyzstan on their list of countries to visit. Seeing the nature of Kyrgyzstan is highly recommended as it boasts of mountain ranges, rapid-flowing rivers, highland lakes, forests, deserts, and glaciers. One of the most popular reasons people visit Kyrgyzstan is because of Lake Issyk-Kul and the Tian Shan mountains. Lake Issyk-Kul is actually the tenth biggest lake in the world in terms of volume, measuring 182 kilometers in length, 60 kilometers in width, and it covers an area of more than 6,000 square kilometers. The Tian Shan mountain range, on the other hand, is located across the border between Kyrgyzstan and China. Its highest peak is called the Victory Peaks which stands at approximately 7,400 meters above sea level. Kyrgyzstan Culture The Kyrgyz people have a rich history and cultural traditions. They started out as nomads living in the south-central part of Russia, between Lake Baikal and Yenesei River, approximately 2,000 years ago. Their language, Kyrgyz, is a Turkic language with traces of Mongolian. Many of them also speak Russian, which is the second language of the country. The Kyrgyz also consider the horse as an important part of their culture. They are considered as the "wings of the Kyrgyz", and were believed to carry the spirit of a dead person to another world. They also have national horse games, like Kyrgyz horse wrestling, "Ulak tariysh", "Kyz kuumai", and "Upai". Kyrgyzstan music can be described as "nomadic" and "rural". The main feature of their folk music includes long and sustained pitches, with influences of Russian elements. As for relationships, beautiful Kyrgyz women usually greet each other with hugs and handshakes. Relationships between males and females are also less rigid among Kyrgyzstanis compared to Uzbeks and Tajiks. Household tasks are commonly shared among men and women. The Kyrgyz are very hospitable people, and they usually serve cooked sheep's head to honor their guests. Traditionally, Kyrgyz people live in a "yurt". Today, most of them live in permanent homes in the city. Travel to Kyrgyzstan Those who have gone to Kyrgyzstan certainly recommend going back. Travel in Kyrgyzstan is friendly on the budget, but the flights can get really expensive. Plan out your trip carefully to get the most out of your stay in Kyrgyzstan. Going to Kyrgyzstan also gives travellers a feeling of excitement about discovering the unknown. Other popular places like China, Japan, Australia, Brazil, etc. have already been featured in a lot of travel magazines and even in online travel sites, and Kyrgyzstan is relatively untouched compared to these places. Kyrgyzstan is a country that has many things to offer the adventurous kind of traveller. If you are looking for places to visit in Central Asia, make sure you put Kyrgyzstan at the top of your list.

Visit Kyrgyzstan - Issyk-Kul Lake Travel Guide (south shore)

07:31
Join us as we visit Kyrgyzstan exploring Issyk-Kul Lake in this travel guide to the south shore focusing on adventure attractions such as hiking, horse-trekking and staying overnight in a yurt camp. The following is a list of all of the different things you can do while traveling in and around Bokonbayevo area of Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan: Intro - 00:00 1) Horse-Trekking - 00:20 2) Skazka / Fairy Tale Canyon - 02:21 3) Manjaly-Ata / Valley of Sacred Springs - 03:00 4) Yurt Building Workshop - 03:47 5) Eagle Hunting Demonstration and Kyrgyz Archery - 04:56 6) Kyrgyzstan Yurt Stay in a Camp - 05:41 Outro (swimming in Issyk-kul lake ) - 06:06 GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ Visit Kyrgyzstan - Issyk-Kul Lake Travel Guide (south shore) video transcript: For the next leg of our travels in Kyrgyzstan ( Кыргызстан), we made our way to the Bel Tam Yurt Camp on the south shores of Issyk Kul Lake (Ысык-Көл). We used this as our base for 3 days and from there, we took a few different side trips to some of the most popular sights and attractions in the area. Here’s a taste of what we got up to: For this half-day trek, we drove from Bokonbayevo (Бөкөнбаев) to the Boz Salkyn Jailoo. Once we arrived at the yurt camp, we met our horses and set off on an incredibly scenic ride. The second stretch of the trek involved riding uphill through the forest, but once we broke through the tree line, we were treated to amazing views of the surrounding area. The horses got a little break to munch on wildflowers, and we sat down to enjoy a picnic. We had been hearing a lot about Skazka from fellow travellers staying at our yurt camp, so we were really looking forward to visiting. The canyon’s name is very fitting as the landscapes really do look straight out of a fairy tale. There are parts where the hills look like they’ve been painted in shades of terracotta, rust, and ochre, and then you also have natural rock formations that rise from the ground. It’s a really nice place for a light hike and a bit of photo taking. While the water of the sacred springs may be the main draw for pilgrims, for us, this attraction was more about the scenery. Narrow trails wind up, down, and around the hills and it makes for a fun hike through some pretty surreal landscapes. Just don’t forget to bring some water, because the sun can be really strong. The yurt-building workshop was located in Kyzyl-Tuu Village. Here we met Tolosun and his family, who all work together to bring the yurts to life. Everything you need for the yurts, from the wooden poles that make up the ceiling to the felt that provides insulation, is made here by different members of his family. We also learned that this family holds the record for fastest yurt-building time clocking in under 10 minutes. They did it a bit slower for us so that we could understand and help out with the process, but needless to say, they’re pros at this. Back in town, we made our way to Federation Salburuun, which is a group focused on keeping alive the tradition of eagle hunting that’s been passed down to nomads for centuries. Eagle hunting happens during the winter months, but during the summer months you can attend demonstrations to learn about this tradition and watch eagles training with furs and hides. Aside from eagle hunting, the group also practices archery and horseback archery. We can’t talk about our visit to Issyk Kul’s (Иссык-Куль) South Shore without also mentioning the Bel Tam Yurt Camp. Not only was staying in a yurt pretty cool, but we loved the friendly staff and the camaraderie amongst travellers at the camp. They had a massive dining tent where everyone gathered for communal dinners. The highlight was getting to know other travellers and swapping tips and stories about Kyrgyzstan. This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine. MUSIC: “Funny Song” by Bensound | http://www.bensound.com/

Nomad Tours in Kyrgyzstan: Cooking & Cultural Traditions

03:40
Order silk road tours online at: http://silkroadexplore.com/ During a tour of nomadic Kyrgyzstan, you'll notice that traditional nomadic dinners are not merely about cooking and serving good food, but are also linked with cultural traditions. During a celebration in which neighbors and guests are invited to share a meal in someone's yurt, the host often lays borsok (fried dough) out as a snack or appetizer before bringing out the meat. Other foods the host may present could include homemade jam, cream, small candies, or a healthy salad of cucumbers and tomatoes to name a few. When a sheep is prepared and brought out for the meal, each portion of the sheep has certain significance. The eldest in the group and guests of honor are shown respect by being presented with certain/the best cuts of meat. The more honor is due; the better cuts of meat are given. This video details how you may see meat divvied up and served to different guests during your own nomadic travels. One tradition during a holiday celebration or party is for the men to take cuts of meat, shave the meat with their knives and add it to a streaming, fresh pile of noodles. The dish is then passed around and can be eaten with the guests' fingers. This dish is called besh barmak and literally means "five fingers." It is one of the most famous traditional Kyrgyz dinners. During your nomadic travels, realize that nomads in Kyrgyzstan are largely muslim and as such, incorporate two different things into their meals. First of all, halal meat is served. Halal food has been killed and prepared according to Islamic standards. This includes killing the animal swiftly and draining all the blood from the body. Besides serving halal meat, another tradition muslims in Kyrgyzstan practice is to say an "amen" after the meal. After the meal has been concluded, a prayer is said by holding uplifted hands in front of the body as if trying to cup water in them. Then, they bring their hands over their face as if washing their face with water they held in their hands. No one can leave until the amen has been said. On their way out, guests are usually given extra food to take home that can be eaten later as a snack or another meal. When you're planning a nomadic tour around Central Asia and find yourself wanting to enjoy an ecotour, healthy meals, and experience nomadic traditions while traveling on a budget, then Kyrgyzstan is the perfect place for your journey.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan 2009

Picture compilation from my travels to Bishkek as a flight attendant, with added historical facts. I think I put the wrong name of the mountains, but I'm not sure. I used PhotoStage Slideshow Producer for the first time with this. The timing of most of the informational slides is off and rather than 8 or 12 secs, they blink off.
