The classical orders
A conversation with Dr. Steven Zucker & Dr. Beth Harris In classical architecture, the Orders consist of variations of an assembly of parts made up of a column (usually with a base), a capital, and an entablature. These structural units may be repeated and combined to form the elevation of a building and its architectural vocabulary. There are eight Orders in total: Doric (Greek and Roman versions), Tuscan, Ionic (Greek and Roman), Corinthian (Greek and Roman), and Composite. The simplest is the Tuscan, supposedly derived from the Etruscan-type temple. It has a base and capital and a plain column. The Doric is probably earlier, however, its Greek version having no base, as on the Parthenon. The Ionic Order, with its twin volute capitals, originated in Asia Minor in the mid-6th century B.C.E. The Corinthian Order was an Athenian invention of the 5th century B.C.E. and was later developed by the Romans. The Composite Order is a late Roman combination of elements from the Ionic and Corinthian Orders. Eastern vs Western Gardens/Architecture
Sorry about the camera quality. This happened by chance that we went to these 2 amazing places which coincidentally, one reflected strongly on eastern cultures, whereas the other on western culture. The 2 places we went: 1. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, located in Delray Beach, Florida (0:00 - 3:15) 2. The Villa Vizcaya located in Miami, Florida (3:16- 5:42) Music Used: Jordan Maxwell - Unlimited Aether - Catharsis

Nixon’s Western White House La Casa Pacifica, originally known as the Cotton Estate, holds a prominent place in California history. Hamilton H. Cotton reserved San Clemente’s finest oceanfront parcel for his own estate. His vision was to model his home after an Andalusian-themed manor he had seen in San Sebastian, Spain. The Cottons constructed their stately single-story residence on a gentle knoll, known as Cotton’s Point. A two-story tower, white stucco walls, wrought-iron flourishes, and hand-painted tiles played an important role in defining the historic home’s overall character. In addition, acres of impeccably landscaped grounds complemented the seaside residence. Monterey cypress trees were brought in and planted in strategic locations across the oceanfront bluff in order to diffuse the late-day sun, add shade, and lend an imposing presence to the magnificent grounds that surrounded the landmark residence. The Cotton Estate gained national prominence when, in 1927, it was featured in Architectural Digest. In 1970, the home would again appear in the magazine, this time featured as the cover photo and described as “The Western White House,” highlighting the importance of its second owner, then-President Richard M. Nixon. #Architecture #Luxuryhomes #Mansions -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to Architecture Youtube Channel Architecture Is a Celebration of International Design Talents and Innovative Luxury Homes by Leading Designers and Independent Brands. Modern Japanese Architecture: From Meiji Restoration to Today | TokyoTechX on edX
Explore the balance between traditional Japanese architecture and Western influence starting with the introduction of Western building styles in the 19th century through the influence of Le Corbusier in the mid-20th century and then up to the present day. ↓ More info below. ↓ Take this course free on edX: https://www.edx.org/course/modern-japanese-architecture-meiji-tokyotechx-arch101x ABOUT THIS COURSE Examine how architecture reflects Japan’s history, starting with its emergence as a new nation in the 19th century and the building of the Western-style capital city of Tokyo on the foundations of Edo. New building materials and construction methods reflected changing times, and the radical contrast between tradition and modernism in the nation was clearly visible in architecture throughout Japan. After exploring the intense Westernization Japan experienced to rival the world’s developed countries, we will turn to look at how Japanese architects developed their own version of Modernism. Initially, Japanese wanted to pursue the discoveries of the Franco-Swiss Le Corbusier and of Walter Gropius at the German Bauhaus. But soon, Japan also began to produce its own 20th-century architects and develop its own style. Following World War II, Kenzo Tange became the first Japanese architect in history to achieve international fame. Lastly, we will mount an interview-based case study titled “Exploring Tokyo Tech’s Twenty-First Century O-okayama Campus.” Tokyo Institute of Technology (aka Tokyo Tech) possesses its own unique and unbroken succession of architects and a campus consisting of their buildings. We will learn about Kazuo Shinohara, one of the most prominent Japanese designers of the second half of the 20th century, and several of his renowned disciples from Tokyo Tech. This course aims to illustrate the present state of Japanese Modernist and postmodern building, as well as the distance covered over the past 150 years, including the 130-year history of Tokyo Tech itself. Join us on this journey through time as we examine and admire Japan’s architecture to better understand Japanese history. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN - How and why today’s Japanese architecture differs from the West - A brief cultural history of Japan in the modern period - A greater understanding of the works of several prominent Japanese designers - The materials and structural design used by Japanese architects - Overall goals and constraints affecting Japanese architects today

Medieval Architecture | History of Western Civilization | Engineering Documentary Films
Medieval Architecture | History of Western Civilization | Engineering Documentary Films Medieval architecture is architecture common in Medieval Europe. The Latin cross plan, common in medieval ecclesiastical architecture, takes the Roman basilica as its primary model with subsequent developments. It consists of a nave, transepts, and the altar stands at the east end (see Cathedral diagram). Also, cathedrals influenced or commissioned by Justinian employed the Byzantine style of domes and a Greek cross (resembling a plus sign), with the altar located in the sanctuary on the east side of the church. Surviving examples of medieval secular architecture mainly served for defense. Castles and fortified walls provide the most notable remaining non-religious examples of medieval architecture. Windows gained a cross-shape for more than decorative purposes, they provided a perfect fit for a crossbowman to safely shoot at invaders from inside. Crenellated walls (battlements) provided shelters for archers on the roofs to hide behind when not shooting invaders.
