Spanish Colonial Style Architecture

04:55
This month we are going to explore all the various house styles throughout the United States. Each day we will go over the key features and elements that make that style unique. How the style might transition from one to another, since a house design is rarely pure to one particular style. This is the outline for this series (subject to change): Dutch Colonial French Colonial Today - (Spanish Colonial) Georgian Adam Early Classical Revival Greek Revival Gothic Revival Italianate Exotic Revivals Octagon Second Empire Stick Queen Anne Shingle Richardsonian Romanesque Folk Victorian Colonial Revival Neoclassical Tudor Chateauesque Beaux Arts French Eclectic Italian Renaissance Misson Spanish Eclectic Monterey Pueblo Revival Prairie Craftsman Modernistic International Modernistic Neoeclectic Contemporary Folk If you know of a particular style that I have left off and you want me to explore it, please let me know. Old Spanish Mission Style Church & Cemetery in the Mountains of New Mexico Part 2

05:26
This was a beautiful cemetery and the church was gorgeous! I love these old Spanish Catholic churches - they have so much history. I wish it had been open, but it was closed. I am going to try to go back soon to get some pictures of the inside. The cemetery had some pretty old headstones there. My brother-in-law said there was a headstone from the Civil War Era, but I was unable to find it. It was a very cold day and there was still some snow left on the ground, and it was a little windy, but it all fit the mood. I went through the cemetery gate and was very pleasantly surprised to see how well this graveyard was. I've seen some that were trashed - with both litter and weeds. It looks like someone or possibly many people, take time to be sure this one is clean. I want to come back in the summer to see what it looks like when everything is green and there are fresh flowers on the graves. There seemed to be an awful lot of young people buried in this cemetery. It always makes me sad to see a young life cut short. I always wonder if it was an illness, an accident, a gunfight..... You never know out here in the Wild West. Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!! Thanks for watching.

14 Strangest Things Found in American Deserts

08:18
From the million dollar Atari Video Game stash, to the most remote PRADA store in the world, these are 14 STRANGEST Things Found in American Deserts ! Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 8. Atari Video Game Stash In Southeastern New Mexico, Atari filled a landfill full of their games cartridges from the 80’s including games like ET, Asteroids, warlords, and centipede. These games didn’t succeed and Atari had to do something with them. Investigators were hired in an attempt to find the games and in 2014 the games were finally uncovered in the landfill near the atari factory after months of planning and investing 50,000 dollars. Once they were found over 900 copies , the games sold on Ebay like hotcakes and even the smithsonian was interested in some copies. 7. The Petrified Forest Would you believe there’s actually an entire forest of fossilized trees in Arizona!? A long time ago, this modern day desert was covered logs that were naturally transported by a river of now extinct trees on the continent of Pangea. Each of these large rocks that are formed on the ground are actually fossils from the late Triassic Period about 225 million years ago. The went through a process known as petrification when their living cells were filled with minerals, like silica and quartz which helps the wood retain much of its original form. It’s believed that some of these trees were over 200 feet tall when alive 6. Abandoned Prada Store This fancy designer shop was set up right in the middle of a desolate area in Western Texas. This was actually a permanent art installation, and not a random place to do shopping. Scandinavian Artists, funded the project and wanted to see how the store would look after spending a long period of time in the middle of the desert. The installation was quickly robbed of all the designer products like you could probably imagine only a few days after it was installed. The store was quickly repaired with stronger windows to prevent theft of the handbags and shows inside. 5. Flintstones Bedrock City Ever wish you be apart of a cartoon sometimes and see what it would look like in reality. The designers of this Flintstones themed attraction park had the same idea in mind but it didn’t turn out to be quite as popular as they had hoped. This is located in the desert just northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona and it’s delightfully creepy. It’s was abandoned for quite some time but it looks like it’s recently been slightly renovated with addition of the slide on the dinosaur's tail. 4. Utah Evaporation Pools If you were hiking through the Utah desert might think you were slightly hallucinating when you came across these evaporation ponds. However you certainly would not want to take a swim here because these waters actually contain salts with potassium. The ponds provide a brilliant blue light in contrast of the barren Moab desert that surrounds them. When the sun evaporates the pond, what’s left over are potassium crystals which are then sold. The different shades of blue are actually due to how much of the water 3. Death Valley Castle What’s a huge castle doing in the middle of the desert in possibly the hottest place on Earth? Scotty’s Castle is a two story Spanish mission style villa, located in Northern Death Valley. It’s known as Scotty’s Castle and it was built by Alberty Johnson who was convinced there was possibly gold in Death Valley somewhere by prospector Walter Scott. The claim turned out to be false however the two managed to become friends anyways. The mansion went unfinished due to the stock market crash in 1929 but tours are available for those who are intrigued by this place. 2. Titan Missile Museum Where else in the US can you visit a 9 ton nuclear warhead? Ok the real one was moved in order for it to become a museum, missile that was used for training excersizes looks quite real! This is the only megaton missile silo that’s actually open to the public from the Cold War and it offers a truly mysterious experience for those who want to visit it. It’s hidden away in the vast, Arizona desert but was decommissioned in 1982 by Ronald Reagan. People can visit the living quarters of the crew who were ready to bring on an apocalypse if asked to do so. You can also spend the night here for the right price. You can even check out the key hole where people would have turned to key for it to be launched! 1. Oldest North American Petroglyphs The Petroglyphs found in the Northern Nevada Desert, is home to North America’s oldest known petroglyphs that are believed to date back to at least 5,600 BC but some can be as old as 14,000 years. That predates the pyramids by at least 3000 years! The rock art is extremely fragile and efforts are being made to protect them. Some of them depict geometric patterns, while others depict a spear and an antelope. Who were the ancient people who left this prehistoric artwork and what were they trying to convey?

What is ARCHITECTURAL STYLE? What does ARCHITECTURAL STYLE mean? ARCHITECTURAL STYLE meaning

03:14
What is ARCHITECTURAL STYLE? What does ARCHITECTURAL STYLE mean? ARCHITECTURAL STYLE meaning - ARCHITECTURAL STYLE definition - ARCHITECTURAL STYLE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. An architectural style is characterized by the features that make a building or other structure notable or historically identifiable. A style may include such elements as form, method of construction, building materials, and regional character. Most architecture can be classified within a chronology of styles which changes over time reflecting changing fashions, beliefs and religions, or the emergence of new ideas, technology, or materials which make new styles possible. Styles therefore emerge from the history of a society. They are documented in the subject of architectural history. At any time several styles may be fashionable, and when a style changes it usually does so gradually, as architects learn and adapt to new ideas. The new style is sometimes only a rebellion against an existing style, such as post-modernism (meaning "after modernism"), which has in recent years found its own language and split into a number of styles which have acquired other names. Styles often spread to other places, so that the style at its source continues to develop in new ways while other countries follow with their own twist. For instance, Renaissance ideas emerged in Italy around 1425 and spread to all of Europe over the next 200 years, with the French, Belgian, German, English, and Spanish Renaissances showing recognisably the same style, but with unique characteristics. A style may also spread through colonialism, either by foreign colonies learning from their home country, or by settlers moving to a new land. One example is the Spanish missions in California, brought by Spanish priests in the late 18th century and built in a unique style. After a style has gone out of fashion, revivals and re-interpretations may occur. For instance, classicism has been revived many times and found new life as neoclassicism. Each time it is revived, it is different. The Spanish mission style was revived 100 years later as the Mission Revival, and that soon evolved into the Spanish Colonial Revival. Vernacular architecture works slightly differently and is listed separately. It is the native method of construction used by local people, usually using labour-intensive methods and local materials, and usually for small structures such as rural cottages. It varies from region to region even within a country, and takes little account of national styles or technology. As western society has developed, vernacular styles have mostly become outmoded due to new technology and to national building standards.

Intro to Country, Spanish & Modern House Plans - Tim Bakke, The Plan Collection

03:18
Video by Tim Bakke, Publishing Director at The Plan Collection https://www.theplancollection.com/about/team/tim Hi, this is the Plan Collection. First, a few things about our company. We started in 2000 as an online business with a vision to provide builders and aspiring homeowners access to affordable and high-quality pre-drawn residential designs, also called house plans or home plan blueprints. Today, we have over 20,000 house plans from leading architects and designers. Our plans have been sold to build homes in all 50 states, throughout Canada, and in 30 countries across the globe. Given that experience, we thought we'd share with you what we are seeing is some of the most popular architectural styles for homes that are being built today, and what aspects makes them so distinctive and well-liked. COUNTRY STYLE HOUSE PLANS https://www.theplancollection.com/country-house-plans The country style is generally an elegant, yet informal design that incorporates other casual styles such as farm house, cottage, bungalow, or cabin. You can think of it in this way: all cottages are country-style, but not all country homes are cottages. A country house typically has features like a generous front porch, rustic finishes in decor, at least one fireplace that serves as the focal point for the interior design, and usually a gable roof. SPANISH MEDITERRANEAN HOUSE PLANS https://www.theplancollection.com/spanish-house-plans Spanish or Mediterranean-style home plans are usually found in warm climates, where the clay tile roof and easily ventilated open floor plans assist in keeping the house cool during hot summer months. They are normally finished in a stucco or stucco-like material, usually white or pastel in color, and feature architectural details like exposed wood and arched openings in the walls. Spanish and Mediterranean-style house plans are often designed as one-story structures, though they don't have to be. The design is similar to the Southwest design, which has Spanish mission influences, and that originated in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Texas. MODERN HOUSE PLANS https://www.theplancollection.com/modern-house-plans House plans in the modern architectural style normally have a flat roof and a boxy shape derived from the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and heavily influenced by German architecture. Modern house plans rely on straight-line geometrical elements, and sleek, simple design. Typical features include almost exclusive use of concrete, stucco, brick, or stone on the exterior, exposed girders and beams made of steel or sometimes, sturdy, laminated lumber, lots of glass, the aforementioned flat roof, and heavy use of metal, usually steel, but sometimes brass or copper on the interior for interior design. THE PLAN COLLECTION LIBRARY OF HOUSE PLANS Helping so many people build a home of their dreams has been rewarding for all of us here at the Plan Collection. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail us. We certainly would like to make your own dream home come true.

The Black Legend, Native Americans, and Spaniards: Crash Course US History #1

11:20
In which John Green kicks off Crash Course US History! Why, you may ask, are we covering US History, and not more World History, or the history of some other country, or the very specific history of your home region? Well, the reasons are many. But, like it or not, the United States has probably meddled in your country to some degree in the last 236 years or so, and that means US History is relevant all over the world. In episode 1, John talks about the Native Americans who lived in what is now the US prior to European contact. This is a history class, not archaeology, so we're mainly going to cover written history. That means we start with the first sustained European settlement in North America, and that means the Spanish. The Spanish have a long history with the natives of the Americas, and not all of it was positive. The Spanish were definitely not peaceful colonizers, but what colonizers are peaceful? Colonization pretty much always results in an antagonistic relationship with the locals. John teaches you about early Spanish explorers, settlements, and what happened when they didn't get along with the indigenous people. The story of their rocky relations has been called the Black Legend. Which is not a positive legend. Turn on the captions. You'll like it! Master Bedroom - Historical Spanish Colonial Revival Home Tour

25:43
Join me for a master bedroom tour in this historical Spanish Colonial Revival home built in 1927. Architecture, furnishings, decorations, bedding and lighting are discussed in detail. For front of house video tour, click here: Video of front of house: https://youtu.be/PK_rUw_LqLA Welcome to our Master Suite Tour. This portion of our 1927 Spanish Revival home is a 10 year old addition and renovation. This structure was constructed of : 14" beams from a 1810's hospital. They have an original patina and are hand hued. Warehouse window walls: A complicated iron and thick glass wall structure by the brilliant boys(Matt and Will) at Greenbottle Workshop. The wall construction was made all on site from individual pieces of iron. Nothing prefab. The doors next to the bed are to die for. They pivot in the center The hearth idea used in the kitchen was repeated in the master bedroom. It is constructed of concrete block and the exterior stucco finish. The short wall extensions create an alcove for the bed and side tables. It visually anchors the room. Wood washed walls create a horizontal shadow line between each piece of wood. One of my favorite things about the master suite. The horizontal line starts at the entry door and continues throughout the bedroom into, the tub area, shower room, closet and laundry area. The glass walls ARE the room. You look out and see the beautiful architectural elements of the house. The room may not be Spanish Colonial Revival, but you see all those elements through the windows. Peacock Pavers, a limestone look with a wonderful color and texture, become the flooring. The stained plank wood walls that create horizontal lines that flows from the entry area, they wraps the walls. Briefly appearing in the master bedroom, they continue through the bath area and into the master closet; a great unifying texture. Master Bath: The indirect lighting comes from windows on the side and the wire-glass skylight overhead. The polished nickel mirrors are properly placed at a slight angle. The wall mounted unlacquered sterling silver faucets are classic in style and the hand carved travertine sinks repeat the egg-shell shape of the adjacent Waterworks tub. The sinks sit atop a travertine slab floating in the space. The back splash is composed of tiny cream-colored polished stones. They have a high sheen and sparkle ever so slightly as the light changes throughout the day. The incandescent lighting for the space is provided by two polished nickel deco light fixtures above each opening. They have frosted glass and allow the area to glow at night. An added bonus is that they illuminate the outdoor sculpture garden. The tub is the famed .25 tub by Waterworks. It was order in the Ivory color, which I believe is more rare that the stark White. It's a thing of beauty, with strong, sculptural lines and delicate "eggshell" profile. One thing you can't tell from this picture is how soft it is to the touch. I mean like a baby's skin soft! Velvet. It's like bathing in suede. The tub's surface absorbs the warm temperature of the water almost upon contact. Taking a bath is womblike. Relaxing. It takes you in and holds you. All those troubles just melt away.... The closet and the master bathroom are adjacent spaces. They occupy what was the original kitchen, laundry room, and breakfast room as well as the addition of a room for the Tub to set. There is a two-way mirror installed and it is always on and we use it as a night light of sorts. I love the wood floors in the bathroom. There are always warm and are seldom effected by water for the tub room has Peacock Pavers. The baskets are all organized and filled with out of season clothing. The drawer unit has cedar drawers. It is one of my favorite things in the house. Anything stored in there smells so good, t-shirts, etc. The wood walls are wonderful too. there were specially milled 1 by 6 tongue in groove, clear pine. The tongue was made longer to create an 1/8" gap between the joints. A very elegant statement. The stain gives an informal feel to the space. These two factors help create a great balance of design. St Louis Commercial Buildings Thomas P Barnett Spanish Mission Upstairs

St Louis Commercial Buildings Historic Buildings in St. Louis There are tons of amazing sites to see and things to do in St. Louis, and one of the most exciting things to do with your whole family or on your own is to see the stunning architecture of St. Louis. There are some fun architecture tours, or you can take a tour that is a huge favorite in the city: The Historic House Museums of St. Louis. Visit one of the old homes, or take your own tour of many in one day. Theyre quite a sight to see! Spare the old house! The ancient mansion spare For ages still to front the market square: -- That may be shown, How those old walls of good St. Louis rock, In native strength, shall bear against the shock Of centuries! There shall the curious see, When like a fable star shall our story be, How the Star City of the West has grown! Touch not a stone! This poem by Matthew Field was meant to honor the stone house built in 1764 for Pierre Laclede, the founder of St. Louis, and his family. Sadly, this building did not survive the currents of history and was demolished in 1841 to build a commercial building. What a great tragedy for the history of St. Louis and its architectural enthusiasts! The good news is that the demolition of this gorgeous house sparked the preservation of many others in St. Louis, along with plenty of other historic buildings that mark periods in St. Louis great history. Today, you can find 6 house museums open for public tours, generously funded by local businesses, individuals, and institutions in St. Louis. The Roswell M. & Eugene Field House at 634 S. Broadway was built in 1845 as an investment for Edward Walsh, and then leased to the St. Louis attorney Roswell Martin Field. The building was saved thanks to Walshs popularity and today is a delightful museum displaying some rare facts of St. Louis history. The Chatillon-DeMenil House was built in 1848 and resides at 3352 DeMenil Place. Its a lovely example of early St. Louis culture; built in the traditional Creole style, the house stands today thanks to efforts to keep it from being razed to build an interstate 55. The Landmarks Association of St. Louis offered major restorations, and now its a great museum and spot of St. Louis culture. The Tower Grave House was built in 1849 by George I. Barnett and sits at 4344 Shaw. It was commissioned by Henry Shaw and has a lovely, bucolic setting that is truly stunning and now open to the public. Shaw was the mastermind behind the Botanical Garden and Tower Grove Park, and their creation consumed the last 30 years of his life, making him one of the great contributors to St. Louis history. Although not a museum, another great architectural landmark was by George I. Barnetts son Thomas P. Barnett, located at 3207 Washington Ave. This stunning 1920s Spanish Mission Style Art Deco building sits on the increasingly popular Washington Avenue, and makes a tremendous sight for the architectural enthusiast. A Tale of Four Eras: The Distillery's Four Roses Sour

01:01
Our partnership in celebrating the 130 years of Four Roses, dubbed “A Tale of Four Eras” featured a few distinct inspirations for 4 classic bourbon recipes, 130 years into the making. Located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, the Four Roses Distillery was built in 1910 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Spanish mission-style architecture is rarely seen in Kentucky so it seemed quite fitting that our partnership with Josh Suchan would result in this fine Tempranillo topped oregano and bay-leaf sweetened Spanish expression of the legendary egg white cocktail. The Alamo & Spanish Missions in San Antonio

01:06
In the 18th century, Franciscan priests from Spain established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River, primarily to extend Spain’s dominion northward from Mexico, but also to convert and educate the native population. Today, the five missions (Alamo, Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada) represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America, and they have been nominated for World Heritage Status.

Junipero Serra of Mallorca

03:16
Father Junipero Serra, the Spanish Franciscan priest who founded the first missions in California was from Mallorca. The interior where Serra was from has changed little and was dry farmed with what little rain falls. This arid island was fertile ground for the Catholic Church and the Spanish Mission Movement that helped the Spanish Empire control and use the labor of the indigenous people of the new world. A disproportionate number of missionaries came from Mallorca. The missionaries desire to bring salvation to as many non-Christians as they could proved to be instrumental in generating a workforce to enrich the Empire. Novitiates studied the lives of saints and learned of their heroic work converting the heathens of the world. Serra was inspired by several saints in particular; St. Xavier in India and St. Francis Solano in Peru. St. Francis of Assisi was profoundly significant for Serra with his message of humble simplicity and caring for those in need. Deeply reverent and passionately persuasive, he became a sought after speaker from the pulpit throughout Mallorca. The oratorical style of his day was extremely dramatic; chest beating, flaming torches applied to bare skin and scourging the back with whips; endurance of pain and shedding of blood demonstrated piety. Serra was a scholar who held esteemed positions at Llullian University and Palma Cathedral and was highly regarded as an intellectual. At age 36 he answered a call for missionaries to New Spain and he and his friend and former student Fr. Palou received permission to sail to Mexico City and enroll in the Missionary College of San Francisco to learn the Franciscan style of missions. He spent one of his last days in Mallorca at the hilltop shrine of Santuaria de Cura where there is today a monastery and guesthouse.
