Storybook Cottage By The Sea
This small fantasy cottage by the ocean is one that you have to see to believe. Located directly on the shoreline of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, this fairytale tiny home is built from natural materials using old-fashioned techniques to deliver a home which looks as though it has fallen from the pages of a storybook. Inside, the home is surprisingly contemporary, making this not only a visually stunning architectural marvel, but also a practical dwelling designed to include all the creature comforts. 88,89m² Simple But Very Smart Idea, House Made From Pine Wood, Free From Useless Decoration
Dream Big, Go Tiny! The Best #TinyHouse RVs, Great Financing, Expert Advice. We Have All You Need To Go Tiny. ----►Subscribe for more: https://goo.gl/pFcTDU ❤️❤️❤️-------- This Holiday Cottage was built in 2013 on a lake-shore in Kapuvár, Hungary. The house made of larch, and free from useless decoration, was designed in 2011 by Toth Project Architecture Office. It is always a big challenge to design a lake-shore house. As architects we wanted to create something special, and something unique. The location is idyllic, and when we are there we feel a special atmosphere. Closed from the noise of the city and from the external world, the site is an island of quiet. We imagined a house that is an organic part of its environment, soundly communicating with it. It has a simple form, ground-plan, and materials. Indeed, the building is a matchbox standing on one side, pierced through in the middle. Simplicity appears not only in the form of the building but also in the restricted application of natural and artificial materials. The whole building is made of larch, and free from useless decoration. In addition to the metal sheet roofing and the large glass window, only a horizontal, gradually fuming plank covering, as well as at the storage part a split stack of wood of small texture can be seen. Lifting out from the surrounding gravel, this produces a floating effect. The sitting-meditating place beside the fireplace also serves as a wind-protecting wall. The large landing stage, appearing in almost a steel grey color, together with the rusty plate buttress behind, radiates a special calmness. 85,1m² A Small House With Wooden Modules Is Built On A Special Place Of The Of The Cliff
Dream Big, Go Tiny! The Best #TinyHouse RVs, Great Financing, Expert Advice. We Have All You Need To Go Tiny. ----►Subscribe for more: https://goo.gl/pFcTDU ❤️❤️❤️-------- The location is a coastline of cliffs, 10 kilometers long and 200 metres high where buildings have never existed. People from this zone have always harvested “cochayuyo” (Chilean seaweed) and seafood. Access to the beach is made by difficult paths which take a long time to go. The house is located on a special point of the cliff. There are fractions to the west, east and north of the house, generating a island situation. The house was projected in a 3,2 meters x 3,2 meters wooden modules where all the skeleton (beans and columns) are visible. The whole skeleton is impregnated with carbolineum (black color) and the cladding of the walls in dark brown. The interiors were worked with white walls and ceilings. The floor is made of wood. The construction was considered in a simple way, only with local wood and labor. Two bedrooms, the living room, dining room and the kitchen shared the same place. During the day, these rooms dialogue and generate a pretty flexible use. At night, big doors can be moved and provide privacy to the bedrooms. To the south, there is a “cuba”, it is a sort of wooden jacuzzi, where the water is warmed with fire. This cuba is connected with a ramp to a guest house. The site is very strong, to the west the pacific ocean from a very high point of view. To the north, south and east orientations, there is view of the cliffs. Man Builds Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Canadian Wilderness
One man builds a cheap, rustic log cabin in the Canadian wilderness alone and without power tools over several months in 2017. Please SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIMXKin1fXXCeq2UJePJEog?sub_confirmation=1 So Why Should You Subscribe To My Channel? To watch me build my next cabin - bigger and better than this one!.. To relax… To virtually immerse yourself in nature… To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost… To see how I build things alone… To see how I cook with no electricity or gas… To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life… To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on YouTube… To become more self-reliant. Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears. My end goal is to have an off grid, primitive wilderness homestead, where I can practice primitive technology, bushcraft and traditional skills in an effort to become as completely self reliant as possible in this day and age. In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October. In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight. Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace. For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique. Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest. Off Grid Cabin: A Visitor, a New Door and Wood Floor
My wife makes an appearance at the cabin, experiencing true Canadian winter with a warm fire inside and deep snow and frigid temperatures outside. Left on my own for the following few days, I change the door for a better one and I finish the wood plank flooring, the perfect compliment to the stone floor and all very appropriate for a log cabin in the forest. The challenges of living off grid in a tiny house are becoming apparent, as temperatures as low as -32C (-26F) with windchill freeze the waterways and dump a couple of feet of snow in the bush. The video starts with my wife and Cali helping me remove snow and install a new custom branded fire pit and branded iron sign gifted to me by Kyle at Iron Arts in Barrie Ontario http://www.ironartsonline.com/ In the following days, I discover how warm I can keep the cabin in this cold weather despite the chinking not being completely done and a few gaps left unsealed. I show a few of the meals that I'm cooking on the wood stove, including grilled cheese sandwich, Thai tom yum soup and wild goose confit with rice and kimchi, fermented cabbage. Living off grid with no electricity or fuel other than wood makes it difficult to store food. I finish making the ice box in the floor to keep food from freezing or from spoiling when the cabin is heated. The bears are hibernating and the deer have moved to their winter deer yards a few miles away, so there isn't as much wildlife around. Blue jays, ravens and squirrels keep me company, but that's about it. Zen forest house: 11K, handcrafted, small home in Oregon
Brian Schulz wanted to see "how small of a house I could make feel big". Inspired by the traditional Japanese minka homes that rely on local materials and steeply sloped roofs to create affordable, open structures, Schulz created a home using materials salvaged or sourced from within 10 miles of his home. The result is a 14-by-16-foot home iin tune with its surroundings that cost only 11,000 dollars - mostly for concrete, shakes and insulation-, along with about a year and half of Schulz's spare time. Much of the wood Schulz collected from the bay while kayaking (he teaches traditional wood kayak-building for a living) and then he milled it himself on-site. Corner posts were blowdown trees from a friend's forest. Kitchen counters were milled from a fallen tree he'd held onto for 8 years. Stair railing is alder poles cut from beside the house. The 3 tables in the home were cut from cedar found on the beach and constructed in 2 hours. He laid flooring using low-grade reject fir, created trim using miscellaneous scrapwood and bought all the home's windows for $40 from the local dump (the french doors came from craigslist). Absolutely, it even has to be. At least when the French alternative-pop-folk superstars Nili Hadida and Benjamin Cotto, alias Lilly Wood & The Prick, have their way. Their haunting melody "Prayer in C" was quickly snatched up by the DJ, producer and label owner Robin Schulz from Osnabruck, Germany, and sublimated into a shining dancefloor pearl! At the beginning of this year the head of Lausbuben Records ("Rascal" Records) and star DJ Robin Schulz already entered the Top 40 of the German iTunes charts with his single "Sunset". Last March he shoved none less than Pharrell Williams from the charts throne with his "Waves" remix for the Dutch rapper Mr. Probz and took a cosy position at Number One in the German singles, iTunes, airplay and dance hitparade charts. But this is not all because Robin Schulz is more than successful on an international level. The "Waves" remix stayed at #24 in the global iTunes Single Charts, at #21 in the global Spotify Charts and has held a Top 10 position in the Beatport Charts for more than three months. Following acclaimed live appearances in Germany, Holland, France and the UK, the Soundcloud-plays millionaire reached into his electronic bag of tricks and delivers a preview for the upcoming summer holidays with his deep house style remix of Lilly Wood & The Prick's "Prayer in C". It's a superstar collaboration: "Prayer in C" is the acoustic counterpart to an open air summer party night in the Provence: the scent of lavender in the air and an atmosphere somewhere between melancholy and euphoria. The track is driven by the absolutely captivating, goose-bump-inducing voice of Nili Hadidas, who with her sexy-smoky timbre, the haunting lyrics as well as Benjamin Cotto's wistful acoustic guitar melody create the organic vibe. The Robin Schulz remix underlays the track with a tight straight-on beat that transforms the original folk-pop track into an energic. melody-house club hymn. And Schulz must know how to do it: nearly 113,000 Soundcloud followers, who clicked his tracks several million times altogether, can't be wrong (for example, "Willst Du" has more than 1.2 million clicks or "Sunset" more than 820,000). And also his YouTube videos for his bootlegs with millions of clicks show that Robin Schulz knows how to seize the latest sound and serve it up to the masses in a sizzling new package. At the moment Robin Schulz is experiencing the hottest clubs in Europe on an extending tour. And the original creators of the track, the Paris duo Lilly Wood & The Prick don't have to play themselves down as far as fame is concerned. At home in France, the duo advanced to genuine superstars following their double-platinum debut abum. At the beginning of the year, one album track, "Into Trouble" was used in a TV spot for the noble jewelry brand Cartier. Together with Robin Schulz they deliver the next club diamond with "Prayer in C (Robin Schulz Remix)". Building a Shipping Container Home | EP02 Moving, Cutting, and Framing a Container House
In Episode 2 of How to Build a Shipping Container House we will go over how to move shipping containers with a crane and place them onto the concrete foundation. I will show how I cut openings for doors and windows in the shipping containers and then welded in different types of steel reinforcement. We started the process of installing the plumbing in the floor of the container and show how we had to cut away some of the steel beams to make room for the pipes. This normally means that you need one trip condition containers with appropriate certificates. I bought my containers from https://www.containerdiscounts.com/shipping-containers-for-sale-home-made-modern and paid $4800 each for the 40-foot hi-cube containers and $3250 for the 20-foot hi-cube container. It was mixed with crushed terracotta as an aggregate and formed into a cube. The cement set hard after 3 days and did not dissolve in water after this period. Process: First I burnt bark and leaves in a kiln at high temperatures to produce well burnt, mostly white wood ash. The ash was then mixed into water and stirred well. The excess water was poured off and the resulting paste was made into pellets and allowed to dry. A pellet was then re-heated in the forge until it glowed about orange hot. This was then taken out, cooled and dropped in a pot of water. The pellet dissolved and boiled due to a chemical reaction with the water. The paste was stirred and crushed terracotta (old tiles from previous projects) was added and mixed to form a mouldable mortar. This was formed into a cube and allowed to set for three days (in the video, a cube made exactly the same way 3 days previously was used due to time constraints). The resultant cube was strong and made a slight ringing sound when tapped with a finger nail. It was placed in water for 24 hours to simulate a very heavy rain event and did not dissolve or release residues into the water. My current theory: The main component of wood ash consists of calcium in some form (e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium oxide). This can be up to 45% from my research. Calcium is in higher concentration in the bark and leaves of a tree. When the ash is mixed with water, the soluble component of wood ash (10% pot ash) dissolves into the water. But seeing that it does nothing for the cementing process, it is drained off leaving the insoluble calcium (and other components) in the paste. Doing this probably raises the relative percentage of calcium in the paste to about 50% or more. Most of the other 50 % consists of silica and alumina which are pozzolans, materials that chemically react with calcium hydroxide to increase the durability of the cement product. The paste was then made into a pellet and fired again to high temperature to convert all the calcium compounds to calcium oxide. It also reduces any charcoal in the pellet to ash if it hadn’t already been burnt the first time. This step seemed important as un-fired ash pellets only partially hardened and would fall apart in water, though retaining a weak undissolved 5mm thick crust. I can only surmise that re-firing the ash just gave a greater conversion of the calcium components to calcium oxide. The pellet is slaked in water converting the calcium oxide to calcium hydroxide. This cement was mixed with crushed terracotta which may also help in some way that I’m not aware of as I only did this one experiment and did not test other aggregates yet (e.g. sand, gravel etc.). Terracotta is porous and might hold together better than other materials. The mixture is allowed to set in air where carbon dioxide reacts with calcium hydroxide to form calcium carbonate cementing the aggregate together. After this, the cement will not dissolve in water. Use: I think this material might have a potential use as a mortar holding rocks or bricks together in wet environments where limestone or snail shells are unavailable for making cement. Wood ash is a pretty ubiquitous material to most natural environments inhabited by people using biomass fuels. Wood ash cement turns a waste product into a valuable building material. From my research, wood ash is already being used as a partial replacement for cement in the building industry without decreases in strength of the final product. But I’ve only just started experimenting with it and don’t know its full capabilities and limitations. Calcium content of wood ash differs depending on the species of tree, the part of the tree burnt and the soil it’s grown on. Cautious experimentation is still required before committing to a hut built from this material.

Living on a 4 Season Houseboat - Beautiful Floating Tiny House!
In this video, we meet Bonnie from Wakefield, Québec, Canada who is living on a gorgeous tiny house boat that is full of character and charm. The River Den (or La Tannière) has custom-made asymmetrical windows, a classic ship's wheel, antique fireplace, and hand-built furniture — all of which give the boat a warm and cozy feel that makes you feel at home as soon as you step on board. The boat is docked on the shore of the Gatineau River and Bonnie lives in it as often as she can when she's not renting it out on Airbnb (https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/9678942?guests=1&s=vNzQNzuG). The tiny houseboat was designed by Bonnie and her boatbuilding friend, Denis Tremblay, who is known locally as the Wakefield Pirate. Denis and a few of his friends built the boat by hand, including the aluminum frame and the custom windows, the cabinets, and the grill floor in the loft. The boat is built on 5 pontoons that are designed to provide flotation while still taking on some water to keep the boat weighed down in the water for stability. The pontoons are also designed to freeze in the ice and are made by a local company called Les Quais Navigables (http://www.quaisnavigables.com). It's a 4-season house boat that is fully insulated and has an antique wood burning fireplace to provide heat in winter. For power, they installed a deep cycle marine battery that provides 12-Volt power for the lights, bilge pump, and navigation lights. They have a Separett composting toilet from Sweden (https://www.separett-usa.com), and a sink that pumps water from the river for washing dishes. For refrigeration, Bonnie uses a cooler with ice, but she might invest in some solar panels so that she can power a proper fridge eventually. The main floor has a kitchen, toilet, dining room and living room, and upstairs there is cozy a sleeping loft with a grill floor that allows heat to rise through the floor, and sun & dust to travel down to the main level. One of the windows in the loft opens up onto a gorgeous rooftop patio with a cedar deck and has space for some solar panels if/when Bonnie decides she needs them. The boat has a gas motor and can be taken out on the river which is quite impressive considering it's size! To make sure the boat was still road worthy, they built a wedge roof over the loft that can be taken apart if Bonnie wants to transport it to a different location. The boat is currently docked in the quaint little town of Wakefield, Québec where there are cute cafes, restaurants and shops right across the street. If anyone is interested in renting this house boat, check it out on the Airbnb website here: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/9678942?guests=1&s=vNzQNzuG Thanks for watching! These Termites Turn Your House into a Palace of Poop | Deep Look
Termites cause billions of dollars in damage annually – but they need help to do it. So they carry tiny organisms around with them in their gut. Together, termites and microorganisms can turn the wood in your house into a palace of poop. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * Termites such as dampwood termites use their cardboard-like poop pellets to build up their nests, turning a human house into a termite toilet. “They build their own houses out of their own feces,” said entomologist Michael Scharf, of Purdue University, in Indiana. And while they’re using their poop as a building material, termites are also feeding on the wood. They’re one of the few animals that can extract nutrients from wood. But it turns out that they need help to do this. A termite’s gut is host to a couple dozen species of protists, organisms that are neither animals, nor plants, nor fungi. Scientists have found that several of them help termites break down wood. When some protists are eliminated from the termite’s gut, the insect can’t get any nutrition out of the wood. This is a weakness that biologists hope to exploit as a way to get rid of termites using biology rather than chemicals. Louisiana State University entomologist Chinmay Tikhe is working to genetically engineer a bacterium found in the Formosan termite’s gut so that the bacterium will destroy the gut protists. The idea would be to sneak these killer bacteria into the termite colony on some sort of bait the termites would eat and carry back with them. “It’s like a Trojan Horse,” said Tikhe, referring to the strategy used by the Greeks to sneak their troops into the city of Troy using a wooden horse that was the city’s emblem. The bacteria would then kill the protists that help the termite derive nutrition from wood. The termites would eventually starve. --- How do termites eat wood? Termites gnaw on the wood. Then they mix it with enzymes that start to break it down. But they need help turning the cellulose in wood into nutrients. They get help from hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of species of microbes that live inside their guts. One bacterium, for example, combines nitrogen from the air and calories from the wood to make protein for the termites. A termite’s gut is also host to a couple dozen species of protists. In the termite’s hindgut, protists ferment the wood into a substance called acetate, which gives the termite energy. --- How do termites get into our houses? Termites can crawl up into a house from the soil through specialized tubes made of dirt and saliva, or winged adults can fly in, or both. This depends on the species and caste member involved. --- What do termites eat in our houses? Once they’re established in our houses, termites attack and feed on sources of cellulose, a major component of wood, says entomologist Vernard Lewis, of the University of California, Berkeley. This could include anything from structural wood and paneling, to furniture and cotton clothing. Termites also will eat dead or living trees, depending on the species. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/10/18/these-termites-turn-your-house-into-a-palace-of-poop/ ---+ For more information: University of California Integrated Pest Management Program’s web page on termites: http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7415.html ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: How Mosquitoes Use Six Needles to Suck Your Blood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD8SmacBUcU For These Tiny Spiders, It’s Sing or Get Served: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7qMqAgCqME Where are the Ants Carrying All Those Leaves?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6oKJ5FGk24 ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! Wooden Brick House by Jaro Krobot, Amazing Small House Design
The old brick house that previously stood on this site was too far gone to save, but architect Jaro Krobot designed a replacement with a similar form. The new house references the local Slovakian village architecture while having contemporary detailing. The small house has 69.2 m2 (745 ft2) of inside floor space on a single level. The narrow rectangular floor plan is a variation of the region’s traditional layout. A main circulation path runs along one side of the house, connecting the living room at the front, the kitchen and dining room in the middle, and the bedroom at the back. The wood-clad bump-outs provide space for closets inside and a shed outside. Given how popular open plan living areas are these days, some people will find it strange that the living room is somewhat removed from the kitchen/dining space, being separated by the bathroom and entrance area in between. However if your preference is for a more connected or open living space, the middle portion of the floor plan could easily be flipped. The bathroom facilities are also a bit unusual, being divided into a tiny powder room and generously-sized shower room. The house was constructed using the STEKO building system. Developed in Switzerland, STEKO consists of hollow blocks made of spruce wood. The blocks are light enough that they can be stacked by hand, and do not require any special tools. The STEKO blocks measure up to 64 x 32 x 16 cm, but smaller ones are also available. After they are stacked, the voids in the blocks are filled with a blown-in insulation. The design of the STEKO blocks minimizes thermal bridging, giving a higher insulation value than standard 2×6 framed walls. The inside surface of the blocks can be left exposed for the interior finish, as with this house, or it can be covered with another material. Photographs by Martin Karšňák, courtesy of Jaro Krobot. Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!
In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside. Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments!
