How to insert and format a table in Microsoft Word 2016: Tables are an effective way of organizing data. The formatting can help distinguish columns, rows, or cells for quick use and understanding. To insert a table: 1. From the Insert tab on the ribbon, select the Table option. An option box drops down and you have a few ways to specify the table size. 2. Select Insert Table and enter in the number of columns and rows. 3. Keep the AutoFit behaviour at the default. This will span the table between the margins with equal column widths. 4. Press OK. The table appears in the document. Once data has been entered in the cells, format the table’s borders and shading. To format the table’s borders: 1. Highlight the table and right-click. 2. Select Table Properties. This dialog box allows us to adjust the size, alignment, and visual properties of the table. 3. Select Borders and Shading. 4. Keep the inside borders, but remove the outside table borders. Click the icons for the left and right borders. Remember that we have the whole table selected, so these icons relate to the outside borders of the table. If we only had a column selected, they would relate to the outside borders of that column. Adjust the width of the top and bottom borders to distinguish the table from the text. 1. Select 1-1/2 pt from the Width menu. 2. Select the top and bottom border icons twice. The first click will turn the borders off, so click the icon one more time to turn the new borders on. Use the image guide to help you understand the changes to the borders. 3. Select OK. To adjust the shading in the header row: 1. Highlight the row. 2. Right-click and select Table Properties. 3. Select Borders and Shading. 4. Go to the Shading tab. 5. Select a fill colour of 25% gray. Summary Basic table formatting helps distinguish the data visually within the document. There are other formatting options that are worthwhile to explore in the Table Properties dialog box. Once you’ve settled on a particular look for your table, be sure to save the table style as a custom style to make formatting quicker.

FrameMaker for Word: Tables with Auto Text in Header Rows

Here's a really cool "Table Trick" in FrameMaker 11. You have the ability to make a Table Style "remember" a different paragraph style for each column in the first row of header rows or body rows. Why not add some automatic text (paragraph prefix) to those "remembered" paragraph styles? This technique allows you to insert a table with 2 mouse clicks, and have your header row automatically filled in with the text you desire. Welcome back. We’re still working in module 6. We’re all the way down now to section 5 where I want to talk to you a little bit about borders and shading. You probably noticed when we were working on the table that you had borders automatically. As soon as you inserted the table you have black borders that print. Well I told you that you have the option to take those off. You can actually add different borders if you’d like just to really enhance your tables. So let me show you a little bit about how borders and shading work. One of the things we talked about was when you first insert a table you automatically will have borders around that table. Borders do print. So if you don’t want them you can take them off, you can actually add different types of borders, different styles, colors, things like that. I’m going to select this table and I’m under the Table Tools contextual tab, the Design tab here. And you can see this is your Borders grouping. I’m going to start with this Borders button here. First of all you’ll notice that several of these look like they’re turned on. This will allow you to put a border around the bottom of your selection, the top, left, right. If you don’t want one of these you just click on it to turn it off. Here’s how you take the border totally off, no border. And if you do that you’ll notice now you have grey what they call Gridlines. Now gridlines do not print. They’re just there to show you the outlines of your cells. Just so you’ll know, if you don’t even want to see the gridlines then you can actually go and turn the view for those on or off under the same Borders button. See how it says View Gridlines here? Well if I click on that now they’re off. Now it looks like there’s nothing there but the table is still there. Your cells still work the same way. It just really would look like nice, neat columns of information versus a table. I’ll go ahead and put these back on. I’m going to choose the outside border option and I’d also like to view those gridlines so that I can work with them a little bit easier. I’ll go down here and choose View Gridlines. Do you notice when I chose Outside Border there’s only a border that will print on the outside of my table? Now I want to apply a border around my header only. So I’ll select the first line, go back to Design and I’m going to choose again Outside Border but this time it’ll be just for the header. So borders are only around your selection, not necessarily each cell in your selection. Notice on this list that you can also apply inside horizontal or inside vertical borders and then you’ve got some diagonal ones you can apply that go sideways like this and then you can also put in a horizontal line. So those are your basic border options. That’s kind of nice but did you notice we can’t really pick a color here or a style, so that’s where it really gets interesting. I’m going to go to the bottom of the list where it says Borders and Shading and click. Now you’ll notice that I have Border options, Page Border options and Shading options.
