How do you design a brand identity system? How do you develop a logo? What is the packaging design process? How do you come up with ideas and explore options?
Today's episode features The Futur's graphic designer, Min Hye Cho, who shares her step by step process to re-design the Energizer Battery packaging. Chris Do sits down with Min to review her design work and talk about her process.
Here's Min's process for this assignment:
Before designing anything, Min finds an inspiring image and uses it to come up with words or prompts that will guide her designs.
The logo wordmark:
Using the prompts as a guide, she chooses a typeface and starts sketching shapes, icons, and images that come to mind. Going deep with exploration, trying lots of ideas. She then chooses the 3 best wordmarks, refines them and adds color.
She again goes into exploration mode and creates lots of different packaging designs. Exhausting many design options. Again, she narrows it down to the best ones and refines them into actual size mockups. At this point, she is done and ready to present her work to the boss or client.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Chris and Min for sharing this, and everyone at the Futur. Stuff like this is HUGE for someone like me. I spent my four years getting an engineering degree only to discover i don't like it, and want to do graphic design, but i can't afford to take 4 more years of school to learn it. I'm trying to teach myself with your videos on my few free nights a week. By breaking it down to a process like this, you really help me focus my efforts when I'm designing.
I think this has to be my favorite video. Is it best to pick typeface before creating logo or the inverse? I'm guessing logo and "all situations are different".
Speaking of 3:24, I would love to dig a bit deeper into that one. Where the letters along with the top and bottom thicc lines sheared 15 degrees from the Y axis with the shear tool? Is the spacing over the letters and under the letters to the thicc line elements equal? I'd love to have access to the illustrator file. In my experience it's a great source for learning. Is there a tiny bit more space under the type to lift the baseline just a little bit? It looks like it to me.
This is a very good practice I really enjoyed it. Such a great branding process explained in minimum time.
By the way there was a typo in all of designs, it's alkaline.
however this is great content thanks a lot.
Absolutely love this! Breaking down the process just enough is so incredibly helpful for those just starting out, so they can fill in the gaps of the process that are very self explanatory.
Hopefully more of these type of breakdowns are in the works? 😁
The future academy is very amazing channel and I love this videos content, I am getting inspiration from him and create a YouTube channel " Graphics Vision" where I upload video tutorials of logo designing and graphic designing. Tap on the logo for check it out and please subscribe my channel.
Fantastic video, great designers, interesting process... but I always feel slightly bothered by amounts of paper design agencies misuse. Printing 6 sets of 50 page presentations which will be seen once at the meeting and later only looked at on the screen. It would be nice it was one big whiteboard to get that same sense of overview without using paper.
So good, gleaning them gold! I've been a graphic designer for a few years now, with not prior official training nor went to any design class / schools. Learning everything from scratch without pointers has been such a struggle but this, THIS channel has been amazing! Appreciate all these precious content! BIG FAT BOLD THANK YOU FROM ME!
Really helpful!! She makes me feel good about my process and for me as a designer (hahaha) the way she says "some times I just dont know what i'm doing" is something that i think is very often in our process and sometimes I think of it as if it were a problem. Also, the time frame she went to get all the ideas (2 weeks), sketches and final product, really makes me feel better, because sometimes, i just get one week or a couple of days to come up with something presentable (not my ideal escenario) but, right now i'm working in a multiple discipline envirionment office, and theres a lot of different projects i have to work on. So. good stuff. keep it up.
Absolutely love the process behind the thinking, it shows something that can be repeatable and teachable to others. So many times I just jump in and just start sketching and then get stuck because I have one "great" idea and then I dont want to move from that one but I need to start getting more exhaustive with my logo studies. Thanks so much for the video it was great AND GREAT JOB MIN!!! (Hope I spelled it right lol)
