I will be attending a university in Texas & major in business administration (A bachelor degree) of course and want a career to pursue in public relations or financial advisor however did not know there are different genres of PR
I mean no harm, I just don't want people to think what you said is something bad. That's the norm. You prove yourself and you'll get big bucks. Everyone begins as an amateur. There's opportunity in PR.
I think your statement on PR being a low paying job is false. Look at the stats. Also, who gets high paying jobs right out the gates? That's usually lucky. I'm just saying with all due respect. There's a median salary of 55K.
I am studying airline and airport management (ba honours) which is 4 years long and it includes one year work placement. I had my placement at Heathrow Airport as PRM passenger service agent and now I am in my final year. Recently, I really got interested in PR.
So, my question is can i break into pr industry with this degree.
I have also learnt and improve my language skills while working at Heathrow and now use Duolingo app.
I am now lower intermediate in french and Spanish as I have leaning it for the last two years.
+noor37130 I think you are on the right track in terms to the bussiness management degree. The year placement at the Airport will help you to interact with people at all levels and that is a good start to develop your career.
Great video Katie, I think it would also be beneficial to include that traditional skills like writing are still highly sought after in PR, as well as an understanding of the digital landscape. Combining traditional and new skills will help you stand out.
Here is something to consider, to prepare for a career in PR I was in telemarketing. Talking to new people constantly trying to sell products. I think sales people transition in to PR nicely, however it is a diverse job.
If I want to work in PR- what would you recommend ? I currently live in Florida-any advice IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN TRANSFER TO BE AN AGENT after I get into public relations- what other careers are there in PR? And what can I expect to make -where is the demand
Thanks for al the info. I am a very sociable person, I am 29 and just got my AS degree, I really want to get my B.A in Public Relations Because I enjoy now days sharing time with new individuals and I thinks that is a good sign for me to follow my future into this great Field.
I know you say it doesn't pay a lot which is fine with me but do you get paid enough to begin paying off loans and basic living necessities after college? Also, how long after graduating did you get your job?
I do fashion based PR in Los Angeles and I love it. You definitely don't need a degree in PR but since I do have a degree in marketing it def helps. The hours are super long, 8 to 8 is on average what I work. You really do have to make sure you are organized and good at writing and talking with people. Networking is so important and having a good sense of peoples energies is crucial. Its really important to read peoples energies and to work though egos, it can be super stressful especially when working with over controlling brands but its worth it when you make the connections and get an amazing turn out because of it (brand and press placement on a celeb)
I'm interested in tech PR. I dropped out of college 6 years ago, worked in IT since then. I think I would prefer to work with people, so I'm going back for a degree in Mass communication , public relations.
I know this video is kind of old, but can you talk more about what you do on a daily basis? i'm not asking for specific details just like.... i'm wondering more of what a day in the life is like! thanks!
the hours are more dependent on the company you work for..i work for a big company in Dallas but it's huge on culture and work life balance so many times I will keep a consistent and reasonable work week...also yes its low pay at first and if you stay in agency but you can make sooo much in this industry depending where you want to go so I hope that doesn't stray people away because there's always a client or potential client in need...your suggestion about being meticulous are spot on, organization is key in this industry, i've been struggling with that..sooo many emails!
@katiebrookeee Hey, I know I'm replying quite late to your comment but I am obviously in college now and I did join PRSSA lol. We actually took a trip to a Public Relations confrence in North Carolina, it was very helpful. Thank you for your comment, hope all is well!
lol!u just have to find the right work environment and client for the lifestyle you want! either said than done i know, but if you're looking for more lax in your work life then try B2B or tech PR, steer clear of consumer lol
This video was extremely helpful! I am about to start my last year of high school and the administrators at my school do not know very many things about the PR industry so I'm glad this video was here to help me on my research path :)
Your have the most helpful channel in the world. I really wanted to be a fashion PR but after this video I know it's definitely the right choice for me. But I do have one reservation. Is it common for a male to be in this industry?
Having been in the business for more than 40 years, and having taught public relations and marketing in undergraduate and MBA programs on Long Island, permit me to toss in my two cents worth of opinion: First and foremost, if you want to get into public relations, make sure you are an excellent writer--i.e., you're able to write letters, proposals, speeches, and press releases, at the very least. And if you're not a good writer, get one to help you do it! Learn all you can about marketing public relations, and start thinking creatively--i.e., start thinking of how to promote anything and anybody you come across. Have a good liberal arts education, but realize many of your clients and prospects may be in health care, technology, computers, etc....So you better have a handle on topics and issues in these areas as well!
Thank you Mr. Haber. I'm a little new to PR, but an excellent writer and most of the things she covered in this video, I already learned from the military - late hours, changing environment, fast paced, etc. I really love fashion and very sociable.
Hie i am doing a bachelors in Mass Communication and political science from India. I am very keen on doing a masters in Fashion Public Relations and diving into the fashion industry. Would i be eligible for a masters in Fashion PR with a bachelors in mass communication? I also want to know the best college to get into. I haven't got anything specific online. Although i am from India i am open to any college abroad. I just want to get into the best Fashion PR college. Please help me with your suggestions.
Thank you for your perspective on the PR industry. I am honestly looking at this as a job/career. All of the qualities you have provided for starting into this job field, I do naturally on my own. So I will research more into this. Thanks again! :)
Practice writing as much as possible. Take writing classes or start your own blog. wordpress.com is great for that. Here is one of my blogs...
You may not want to hear this but writing is actually huge in PR. I'm in college and I'm a PR major and have talked to many professionals and every single one has said the most important thing is to write every day. Write releases for random companies and people. Look at some releases and try to expand your vocab. It will help a lot.
Katie, you said that at work it is important for you to stay organized and on track with everything such as emails, phone calls, clients, etc. How do you manage to do that? Do you use a special type of calender or program? What would you recommend for those who need to stay as organized as you do in their work industry? Thanks :)
