The average salary for PR works is around $50,000, that's not bad sounding to me. How much do you typically start out with?
Kermit (2 months ago)
50K USD a year, take home or not is really respectable... as long as you have the time to spend and enjoy it!

I mean no harm, I just don't want people to think what you said is something bad. That's the norm. You prove yourself and you'll get big bucks. Everyone begins as an amateur. There's opportunity in PR.
Pasch Dave (2 years ago)
I think your statement on PR being a low paying job is false. Look at the stats. Also, who gets high paying jobs right out the gates? That's usually lucky. I'm just saying with all due respect. There's a median salary of 55K.

I am studying airline and airport management (ba honours) which is 4 years long and it includes one year work placement. I had my placement at Heathrow Airport as PRM passenger service agent and now I am in my final year. Recently, I really got interested in PR. So, my question is can i break into pr industry with this degree.
noor37130 (2 years ago)
De toute facon.. Merci beaucoup
noor37130 (2 years ago)
+Anne Cooper I have also learnt and improve my language skills while working at Heathrow and now use Duolingo app. I am now lower intermediate in french and Spanish as I have leaning it for the last two years.
Anne Coops (2 years ago)
+noor37130 I think you are on the right track in terms to the bussiness management degree. The year placement at the Airport will help you to interact with people at all levels and that is a good start to develop your career.

can any one help me, how i can write a professional proposal? How can learn all about pr industry ?
Great video Katie, I think it would also be beneficial to include that traditional skills like writing are still highly sought after in PR, as well as an understanding of the digital landscape. Combining traditional and new skills will help you stand out.

What are the best websites/places to start looking for PR jobs? I use Indeed to look at potential jobs, and some positions are misleading based on the reveals.
+Alec Thavychith Hi Alec take a look at http://curzonpr.com/public-relations-careers/ perhaps you can find your dream :)
Ashton Deroy (3 years ago)
Here is something to consider, to prepare for a career in PR I was in telemarketing. Talking to new people constantly trying to sell products. I think sales people transition in to PR nicely, however it is a diverse job.

I know you say it doesn't pay a lot which is fine with me but do you get paid enough to begin paying off loans and basic living necessities after college? Also, how long after graduating did you get your job?
jacobmufasa (4 years ago)
thanks for the video its imformation defenitely not my field but my friend are in it and i wonder what its like.. im going to be a front end web dev
Xani (4 years ago)
I do fashion based PR in Los Angeles and I love it. You definitely don't need a degree in PR but since I do have a degree in marketing it def helps. The hours are super long, 8 to 8 is on average what I work. You really do have to make sure you are organized and good at writing and talking with people. Networking is so important and having a good sense of peoples energies is crucial. Its really important to read peoples energies and to work though egos, it can be super stressful especially when working with over controlling brands but its worth it when you make the connections and get an amazing turn out because of it (brand and press placement on a celeb)
Cooper McKay (4 years ago)
I'm interested in tech PR. I dropped out of college 6 years ago, worked in IT since then. I think I would prefer to work with people, so I'm going back for a degree in Mass communication , public relations.

I know this video is kind of old, but can you talk more about what you do on a daily basis? i'm not asking for specific details just like.... i'm wondering more of what a day in the life is like! thanks!

what about writing skills? I teach PR courses and if you can't write well, you won't do well in PR. I believe you need to include this in your video and was surprised to see it omitted.

great advice there. guyz, any PR tips for a dance group???????
katiebrookeee (4 years ago)
the hours are more dependent on the company you work for..i work for a big company in Dallas but it's huge on culture and work life balance so many times I will keep a consistent and reasonable work week...also yes its low pay at first and if you stay in agency but you can make sooo much in this industry depending where you want to go so I hope that doesn't stray people away because there's always a client or potential client in need...your suggestion about being meticulous are spot on, organization is key in this industry, i've been struggling with that..sooo many emails!
Nallah B (3 years ago)
@katiebrookeee Hey, I know I'm replying quite late to your comment but I am obviously in college now and I did join PRSSA lol. We actually took a trip to a Public Relations confrence in North Carolina, it was very helpful. Thank you for your comment, hope all is well!
katiebrookeee (3 years ago)
ohhh well good luck with school! join PRSSA if your school has it, that's my best bit of advice :)
Nallah B (3 years ago)
@katiebrookeee Thank you lol, I am an upcoming freshman this Fall and am trying to get as much pre-research in as I can before school starts.
katiebrookeee (3 years ago)
lol!u just have to find the right work environment and client for the lifestyle you want! either said than done i know, but if you're looking for more lax in your work life then try B2B or tech PR, steer clear of consumer lol
Nallah B (3 years ago)
@katiebrookeee Thank you for your comment, sort of reassuring.

Christopher Gonzalez (4 years ago)
@Kelsey Richards Lmao. Epic answer. Very true. Unless you want a scholarship or help, high school means jack sh*t. It's all about what you do after.
Kelsey Gowing (4 years ago)
Haha SAT scores don't mean shit... just get to college and get your degree.

Having been in the business for more than 40 years, and having taught public relations and marketing in undergraduate and MBA programs on Long Island, permit me to toss in my two cents worth of opinion: First and foremost, if you want to get into public relations, make sure you are an excellent writer--i.e., you're able to write letters, proposals, speeches, and press releases, at the very least. And if you're not a good writer, get one to help you do it! Learn all you can about marketing public relations, and start thinking creatively--i.e., start thinking of how to promote anything and anybody you come across. Have a good liberal arts education, but realize many of your clients and prospects may be in health care, technology, computers, etc....So you better have a handle on topics and issues in these areas as well!
slagpharter (1 year ago)
You are a bore
Tijera Slack (4 years ago)
Thank you Mr. Haber. I'm a little new to PR, but an excellent writer and most of the things she covered in this video, I already learned from the military - late hours, changing environment, fast paced, etc. I really love fashion and very sociable.

Tijera Slack (4 years ago)
Practice writing as much as possible. Take writing classes or start your own blog. wordpress.com is great for that. Here is one of my blogs... http://latijerablvd08.wordpress.com/2014/07/19/my-intro-personal-memoir-as-a-blessed-civilian/
Natalie Seitz (5 years ago)
You may not want to hear this but writing is actually huge in PR. I'm in college and I'm a PR major and have talked to many professionals and every single one has said the most important thing is to write every day. Write releases for random companies and people. Look at some releases and try to expand your vocab. It will help a lot.

Katie, you said that at work it is important for you to stay organized and on track with everything such as emails, phone calls, clients, etc. How do you manage to do that? Do you use a special type of calender or program? What would you recommend for those who need to stay as organized as you do in their work industry? Thanks :)
